FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear members of the Buckingham Friends School community,

As Buckingham Friends School enters its 231st year, we celebrate our community and everything about it that makes BFS distinctive and singularly special. Our mission and philosophy, core values and curriculum, and bucolic, wooded campus provide an intentional framework and setting that allow each individual to realize their promise while engaging in teaching, learning, and growth in a deeply personal way. Every child and their family are individually known and understood here, and together, we form a vibrant and engaged community. Each day I have the privilege of witnessing how our dedicated teachers, talented students, and supportive families reveal and express the culture of our unique community and shape the relevant and inspiring institution that connects us all.

Within the pages of this 2024–25 Annual Report, we celebrate the many ways that our community offered tangible support of BFS last year. As is the case each year, BFS is proud to be a donor-assisted school, and everyone’s participation in the Annual Fund is central to our support of every child, each teacher, and all of our programs. We are grateful for the leadership of last year’s volunteers and the philanthropy and commitment from every donor.

“ ONCE AGAIN, OUR CURRENT AND EXTENDED COMMUNITY IS ADVANCING OUR HOPES FOR EACH LEARNER AND OUR DREAMS FOR A VIBRANT FUTURE WHILE ENSURING THAT BFS REMAINS ACCESSIBLE TO ALL.”

From the ongoing help toward our capital projects to increasing salaries, from the generous EITC gifts in support of financial aid and breaking ground on the Arts Building projects, and

from a successful and spirited annual auction, the dreams we have held with intention over many years are being realized. Once again, our current and extended community is advancing our hopes for each learner and our dreams for a vibrant future while ensuring that BFS remains accessible to all.

I hope you enjoy reading about the many ways our community expressed its strength and supported BFS last year. On behalf of the students, the faculty, and the staff, I offer my sincere thanks to everyone who generously gave gifts of time, talent, and financial support. Because of your engagement, our beloved BFS remains true to its mission and core values and is positioned to remain relevant and thriving in a changing world.

Gratefully yours,

GRADUATION HEADER HERE

On the evening of June 5, the Class of 2025 were celebrated, surrounded by family and friends, during their graduation ceremony. With smiles, and a few tears, students expressed gratitude and shared memories from their time on campus. Upper School Math teacher Chris Moore addressed the group:

Tonight, we are saying goodbye to an incredible group of young people. The impact you’ve had on our daily lives, and the culture of this school has been remarkable. For us, you have made teaching so incredibly worthwhile, rewarding, and quite frankly, fun. Your excitement for learning, concern for each other, and positive attitudes in the classroom and the learning commons, on the playground and on the athletic fields were a model that others should look up to. You brightened the School and all of our days.

With humor and gratitude, Chris highlighted the students’ great sense of community and just how tightly bonded the members of this class are.

There is no shortage of examples we’ve witnessed which speak to the quality of individuals within your group and the love and respect you have for each other.

He encouraged the students to take an active approach in their high school education.

Get involved, participate. This is your opportunity to try new things and to ‘Pursue Your Passion.’ This is your adventure.

After teachers read personal remarks describing the character, personhood, and attributes of the individual students, and diplomas were received, the Class of 2025 departed the Meetinghouse for the first time as BFS Alumni.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BFS CLASS OF 2025!

We are proud to share this list of secondary schools that our most recent graduates have chosen to build upon their BFS education:

Blair Academy

Central Bucks South High School

George School

THE FRIENDS COLLABORATIVE

Through our membership with the Friends Collaborative, EITC program participants will enjoy easier access to enrollment and benefit from the Collaborative’s support team, streamlining this process for you to receive tax credits while supporting financial assistance for BFS students!

Qualifying individuals and businesses have the opportunity to receive tax credits for supporting financial assistance for BFS students. Individuals and businesses in Pennsylvania can participate in the Friends Collaborative by making a minimum contribution of $3,000 per year for two consecutive years to support tuition assistance at BFS and fellow Quaker schools. In turn, participants receive a PA state tax credit for 90% of their contribution amount. As an example, a $10,000 Friends Collaborative gift to support tuition assistance has a net cost of just $1,000 to the donor – making this truly a win-win for donors and BFS! BFS receives at 90% of every contribution from BFS donors, and the remainder supports scholarships at other Quaker schools in our area.

ENDOWMENT GIFTS

Buckingham Friends School invests its endowment funds with Friends Fiduciary, whose practices are in unity with Friend’s views on peace, social justice and the environment. The value of Buckingham Friends School endowment was $6,700,346 as of June 30, 2025.

Endowment Funds provide long-lasting financial security and stability for the School. Contributions are permanently invested, the principal of these funds remain intact, and the School draws from the interest and dividends to support donor-directed causes.

The following details the variety of endowed funds of BFS and we gratefully acknowledge those who have contributed to these funds over the course of the year. This support will create a perpetual source of income and an enduring gift to Buckingham Friends School.

General Endowment Fund

The revenue generated from these investments is used throughout the school year, if and as needed.

Elizabeth Todd Haines Fund

Betty Haines was a beloved teacher at BFS from 1937 to 1966 who touched many young lives. To honor her teaching excellence, a BFS alumnus established this fund in her honor in 2004. Proceeds are used for financial aid and scholarships.

John Leydon ‘55

Faculty Enrichment Endowment Fund

This endowment provides necessary funds for advanced study, seminars, workshops, and trainings for the ongoing professional development of BFS Faculty.

Dr. Raymond Bell and Elizabeth Riley Bell

Financial

Aid Endowment for Quaker Children

This fund provides financial assistance to qualified Quaker children based on financial need and is awarded at the school’s discretion.

Drew Augenblick

Gordon G. and Allaire Wallace Fund

The Wallace Family established this fund in 2001 in memory of Gordon and Allaire, mother and sister of the Wallace brothers, all BFS ‘60s graduates. The fund augments the school’s existing scholarship fund.

Scott Wallace ‘65

Grandparents Scholarship Fund

Established through a bequest from an anonymous donor, this fund provides emergency tuition aid for families encountering unexpected financial difficulties during the course of the year.

James Iden Smith Quaker Financial Aid Award

Established in 1998, the purpose of this fund is to provide financial aid to Quaker students each year based upon merit. Financial need is considered on a secondary basis. Applicants are considered based upon recommendations from the Clerk of their Monthly Meeting and other Friends who know the student.

Bethann Morgan ‘77

Jonny Baldwin Fund

A scholarship is awarded each year to a student who applies for financial aid.

Peter Steward ’52 Fund

A scholarship is awarded each year to a student who applies for financial aid in memory of this alumna.

Sarah Mook Fund

Sarah was a BFS 3rd grader when she died of a heart condition that had gone undetected from birth. A scholarship fund was named in her honor to help make BFS affordable to a broad spectrum of students and to memorialize her brief life.

Katherine Falk

Joan Mook

John and Silvia Napierski

Jonathan Weiner and Deborah Heiligman

Scott Family Fund for Friends Education

Established in 2019, this endowed fund provides financial aid assistance annually to enrolled BFS students whose families have demonstrated and verified need for tuition assistance and who are members of the Religious Society of Friends. Extra consideration is extended to families who are members of Buckingham Monthly Meeting.
