ANNUAL REPORT 2022-23

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

D

ear members of the Buckingham Friends School community,

The Annual Report is always a meaningful opportunity for me to reflect on and appreciate with sincere gratitude the people who have helped us support, preserve, and sustain Buckingham Friends School. Thank you for your many gifts and for ensuring that the School is on track in so many of the ways in which we measure stewardship, integrity, community, and success. This year, as always, members of the community stepped forward with wisdom, spiritual guidance, encouragement, generosity, inspiration, and financial support. The commitment of time and energy and funds was astounding, all of it contributing to our mission to “honor the Light within each person, inspire scholarship and instill the value of caring for others and our world.”

In this report, you’ll see stories of the members of the community who have nurtured BFS’s strengths and culture, just as has been done by so many for two hundred and twenty-eight years. This year, four years into our strategic plan, “Realizing the Promise,” was another banner year in terms of philanthropic and community support. Gifts to the Annual Fund provided much needed support for our programs and faculty. New programs are in place, and we have increased teacher salaries over twenty-six percent in just four years. This year’s Auction sustained and lifted up the quality of our community with funds for financial aid. Attendance at Glowga, participation in the JEM Read-A-Thon, participation in the EITC Program, and may other special gifts added so much to all we value and do at BFS. And, the building projects that are in process on campus are due to the significant stewardship and quiet generosity of many community members.

“IT’S BEYOND EVIDENT TO ME THAT PEOPLE, REGARDLESS OF THE AFFILIATION WITH BFS, CARE DEEPLY ABOUT THIS SPECIAL SCHOOL AND EVERYTHING WE STAND FOR AND DO.”

MISSION Buckingham Friends School honors the Light within each person, inspires scholarship and spiritual community, and instills the value of caring for others and our world. 2022-2023 BOARD OF TRUSTEES Michael Godshall, Clerk Laura Kinnel, Assistant Clerk George Yarnall, Secretary Lisa Pretecrum, Treasurer Drew Augenblick Brad Bovee Andrew Garrett ‘80 Daniel Holton-Roth ‘91 Chris Kerr

The weeks just after graduation are typically still and peaceful on campus. Today, it’s hard for me to conjure that tranquil atmosphere as I listen to a cacophony of cement trucks, jackhammers, and backhoes. Normally considered discordant, these sounds reflect the harmony of the community’s vision and the campus-improvement projects that will allow Buckingham Friends School to continue to provide exceptional student-focused education in the future. Visitors to campus today are witnessing the tremendous progress that’s been made in such a short period of time – in the construction of a new gym and connector, in the Lower School playground project rising amongst the trees, in the building of a new stand-alone science building

at the edge of the woods, in the creation of a new bus canopy that will shelter students at the end of the day, and in the consolidation of the Middle School on the first floor of the Main Building and unification of the Upper School on the second floor (both divisions will now have their very own signature commons areas). These long-anticipated projects of campus improvement, in addition to respecting our environment, are focused on supporting our vision for education, enabling teachers who are as committed to the craft of teaching as they are to the individual students they are teaching. Building changes, consolidated spaces, new furniture and new equipment will elevate teaching and learning while supporting a school culture which sparks curiosity, invites

discourse, stirs imagination, enhances resourcefulness and self-knowledge, and remains centered on the individual and is mindful of the Light within everyone. It is beyond evident to me that people, regardless of their affiliation with BFS, care deeply about this special school and everything we stand for and do. Thank you for your generosity and support of Buckingham Friends School. Gratefully yours,

Paul Lindenmaier Head of School

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BFS CLASS OF 2023!

T

he BFS community came together in the Buckingham Friends Meetinghouse on the evening of June 9th to celebrate the Class of 2023. During their final shared experience as students at BFS, the Meetinghouse was filled with

songs, reflections, and memories, many unique to each presenter yet meaningful and moving to all in attendance. After each student was individually recognized by a member of the faculty, and diplomas were awarded, everyone departed this “Friendly

place,” holding these seventeen bright Lights in their hearts and minds as they celebrated the alumni Class of 2023. We are proud to share this list of secondary

schools that the Class of 2023 has chosen to attend to build upon their BFS foundation as they continue on their journeys and “let their lives speak”: George School, Germantown Academy,

Holicong Middle School, La Salle College High School, New Hope-Solebury High School, Palisades High School, Solebury School, The Lawrenceville School.

“AS WE LEAVE THIS FRIENDLY PLACE, LOVE GIVE LIGHT TO EV’RY FACE; MAY THE KINDNESS WHICH WE LEARN LIGHT OUR HEARTS ‘TILL WE RETURN”

WELCOMING BFS’S NEW CLERK OF THE BOARD Alexis RidgeSimek began her tenure as BFS’s new Clerk of the BFS School Board this summer on July 1st, succeeding Michael Godshall, who served as Clerk of the Board for six years. A long-time trustee and dedicated community member, Alexis has held many roles on the Board, including serving as Clerk of the Advancement Committee, and as a member of the Committee on Trustees and the Executive Committee. She is also the Board representative from Doylestown Friends Meeting. Although previously connected to BFS through her extended family and her Quaker faith and practice, Alexis first joined the BFS community as a parent (Fiona ’22 and Aria ’26) in 2014 and quickly found herself immersed in the life of the School. Having been nominated to join the Board in 2015, we now celebrate and recognize Alexis as she assumes this new leadership role in our community with continued gratitude for her vision, service, and leadership.

THE FRIENDS COLLABORATIVE Through our membership with the Friends Collaborative, EITC program participants will enjoy easier access to enrollment and benefit from the Collaborative’s support team, streamlining this process for you to receive tax credits while supporting financial assistance for BFS students! Qualifying individuals and businesses have the opportunity to receive tax credits for supporting financial assistance for BFS students. Individuals and businesses in Pennsylvania can participate in the Friends Collaborative by making a minimum contribution of $3,000 per year for two consecutive years to support tuition assistance at BFS and fellow Quaker schools. In turn, participants receive a PA state tax credit for 90% of their contribution amount. As an example, a $10,000 Friends Collaborative gift to support tuition assistance has a net cost of just $1,000 to the donor – making this truly a win-win for donors and BFS! BFS receives at least 90% of every contribution from BFS donors, and the remainder supports scholarships at other Quaker schools in our area. THANK YOU MR. B! Nancy Sandberg

Excitement and laughter rippled through the tent on the drizzly afternoon in May as scores of BFS alumni, families past and present, faculty, and friends came together to honor Steve Bernardini as he neared his June retirement. Over 200 people gathered to be part of the momentous occasion, to thank this beloved BFS legend – faculty member, colleague, former coach, science and math teacher, mentor, and friend to hundreds of students and their families - for his 42 years of dedicated and selfless service to the BFS community. After several wonderful speeches, Head of School Paul Lindenmaier surprised everyone with the announcement that the new gymnasium would be named in honor of Steve -- news that was met with a standing ovation. As the skies cleared and the last of the attendees pulled themselves away from the tent to find their cars in the approaching darkness, there was Steve, true to character, still giving his full attention to the last of the well-wishers, not yet fatigued despite the high emotions of the day. He has always given his all for this community. Thank you, Mr. B!
