MATERIAL WORLD: A CONVERSATION ABOUT SCULPTURE TODAY

TEACHERS’ NIGHT OUT

Join BCA Curatorial Assistant Jacquie O’Brien as she leads a panel discussion about the dynamic arena of contemporary sculpture, featuring Texture & Response artist Karen Cygnarowicz alongside Vermont-based sculptors Kevin Donegan and Meg McDevitt. Panelists share their individual experiences working with distinctly different materials. They reflect on broader conversations around three-dimensional artwork, which may include topics such as how sculptors seek to make art more accessible to their communities and why there is a renewed attention to the meaning and influence of materials.

Vermont teachers are invited to join us for a relaxed social hour. Whether you teach studio art, integrate art into other subjects, or just appreciate conversations prompted by art and design, enjoy engaging with area colleagues while previewing our new exhibits before our public opening the same evening. Meet our Gallery Learning team, who will share behindthe-scenes insights about featured artworks, while also finding out about our upcoming BCA seasons. We’ll have snacks just for you in our fourth-floor art studio. Teachers-in-training and family members are welcome.

SCHOOL VISITS BCA gallery educators lead groups through discussions of art in our current exhibitions. These inquiry-driven tours encourage close looking, critical thinking, and thought-provoking conversation. Next, we link the conversation to hands-on art activities, and students create their own works of art exploring exhibition themes, materials, and artistic processes. These activities address multiple categories highlighted in National Core Arts Standards for the visual arts, especially responding, connecting, and creating. Classroom tours at the BCA Center are offered on Mondays through Fridays, between 9:30 and 11:30 am. Visits last approximately 90 minutes. Custom-scheduled days and times are based on availability. We suggest one chaperone for every five to seven students. The program fee is $10 per-student. Groups are invited to apply for a partial or full scholarship. Please see burlingtoncityarts.org/gallery-learning for more information, or contact Kristin Dykstra at kdykstra@burlingtoncityarts.org.

TERRY EKASALA: LAYERS OF TIME

TEXTURE & RESPONSE

October 20, 2023–January 27 First Floor, BCA Center

October 20, 2023–January 27 Second Floor Gallery, BCA Center

Terry Ekasala’s improvisational paintings explore the threshold between abstraction and representation. Ekasala approaches painting with immediacy and spontaneity, reveling in the interplay of color and texture, gesture and form. Layers of Time features monumental oil paintings and more intimate works on paper, as well as several new, large-scale paintings commissioned by BCA. Residing in East Burke, Vermont, Ekasala has exhibited her work nationally and internationally and is the recipient of the 2023 Vermont Prize.

Texture & Response prompts us to consider our fascination with visual texture. Featuring New England artists Karen Cygnarowicz, Gracia Nash, and Ann Wessmann, the exhibit asserts that in place of touch, our visual perception of surface is just as compelling as its physical sensation. Working in materials traditionally associated with craft including glass, wood, and fiber, these artists are unified by a shared, meditative practice and investigation of process as they explore the allure of texture.

Hospitality sponsors, Lake Champlain Chocolates, Farrell Distributing, and William Hill Estate Winery. Burlington City Arts is supported in part by The Vermont Arts Council & the National Endowment for the Arts.

HERE NOW: ART AND MIGRATION February 9–Saturday, May 11

Here Now brings together a group of international and regional artists whose work explores concepts of borders, movement, and migration across local urban centers and global geographies. Through their choice of materials and visual languages, these artists challenge conventional notions of borders as fixed.

They reimagine borders as sites of historical investigations, social reckoning, and conduits of an emerging aesthetic. Here Now features artists who have experienced this dislocation firsthand, and through their creative practice, defined their place in the here-and-now. Co-curated by Dr. Sarah Rogers, Visiting Asst. Prof. of History of Art & Architecture, Middlebury College and Heather Ferrell, Curator/Director of Exhibitions, BCA Center
