CLASSES ON SALE

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 17 12 PM

Experience a new medium, learn a new technique, or expand your skills in our one-day workshops and 4-8 week classes. All classes and workshops are open to participants at any skill level and located at the BCA Studios unless otherwise noted.

Open Studio is not included in the class price. Please choose the Open Studio add-on at the time of registration if you would like access to open studio hours during your class.

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

Apply November 3-12 for priority consideration at burlingtoncityarts.org/ scholarships or by calling 802-865-7554. Scholarships submitted after November 12 will be reviewed on a rolling basis and are subject to availability. Please do not register online if applying for a scholarship. Scholarships are typically processed within two weeks.

The demand for scholarship funds has greatly increased and we’re committed to spreading available funds among as many applicants as possible. Please note that we may not be able to award multiple scholarships to an individual throughout the year. When able, we encourage applicants to contribute to their class fees, so more people can benefit from BCA scholarships.

STUDIO MEMBERSHIP

BCA Studios at 405 Pine Street offers seasonal studio membership for adults (18+) with basic experience who would like to work independently in our Drawing/Painting, Print, Clay, Jewelry, Darkroom, or Digital Lab. Each studio offers approximately 30 hours of open studio time per week. Trained studio assistants are on hand during all open studio hours for guidance and support. Basic supplies and materials, storage, and cleaning supplies are included. Please contact the studio manager for more information and to schedule an orientation. The JUDY KELLY DRAWING/PAINTING STUDIO features standing easels, adjustable lighting, utility sink, Homasote critique wall, and drying racks. Studio members are allowed the use of community tools and shared storage space. The studio is equipped for solvent-free, water-based painting and drawing materials.

The PRINTMAKING STUDIO offers a 30 x 48" Takach etching press, a 38 x 32" vacuum-sealed exposure unit, washout booth, utility sink, large work tables, and cleaning materials. Our Print Studio is equipped for screenprint, relief printmaking, and monotype. Studio members are allowed the use of community tools and shared storage space.

The TAMARA EDDY CLAY STUDIO is a fully equipped, educationally-focused ceramics studio with 12 pottery wheels, three kilns, a slab roller, extruder, and a wide variety of hand tools for wheel throwing, hand building, and sculpting. Studio members get personal shelf space to store their clay and work in progress. The studio provides slips, underglazes, and over 100 glaze combinations. All clay must be purchased through BCA. Prerequisite: Students need to have taken a BCA Clay class or have been a BCA Clay Studio member.

The DARKROOM PHOTOGRAPHY LAB offers a traditional black and white darkroom for film and print processing, using low-toxicity Eco-Pro chemicals. There is space provided for experimenting with alternative historic processes, mat cutting, and zine making.

The DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY LAB offers color-calibrated iMac workstations with Adobe Creative Cloud software, Epson V700/V800 film scanners, and three large format Epson printers with archival printing capability up to 44". Additional per-sheet fees apply for digital paper and ink.

The LAURIE PETERS JEWELRY STUDIO provides many tools and equipment, including a polishing wheel, rolling mill, drill press, flex shafts, soldering stations, a PMC kiln, an extensive range of forming stakes and hammers, and many small hand tools.

Spend the morning as a family in the BCA Clay Studio, and turn slabs of clay into structured handbuilt cups. Using our collection of stamps and tools, you’ll learn decorative techniques to create texture and pattern, and customize with colored underglaze. Once fired, you’ll be able to admire your work while sipping on that perfect cup of cocoa. Youth must be accompanied by an adult. Adults may assist their child(ren) free of charge; additional tickets are required for adults who would like to make their own work. Discover the magic of camera-less photography in BCA’s darkroom! Learn to create photograms by arranging found objects on light-sensitive paper and watching your compositions come to life through chemical development. This handson family workshop explores how light, shadow, and time work together to create one-of-a-kind prints. We’ll provide a variety of objects to work with and participants are invited to bring small but significant items from home that inspire you! All supplies are provided; no experience needed. Youth must be accompanied by an adult. Adults may assist their child(ren) free of charge. Connect as a family at the BCA Clay Studio! This hands-on workshop, designed as a shared family experience, includes a wheel throwing demonstration at the beginning of class, access to unlimited clay, and time to create one piece each that will be fired and glazed by the studio. Registration provides access to two wheels and two fired pieces – one for each participating adult and child; no additional pieces with be kept or fired. Registrations will be listed under the participating child’s name, and a parent or adult (age 18+) of your choosing will join in the fun! Your family’s fired pieces will be available for pickup 4-6 weeks after your class.

Looking to take your wheel throwing skills to the next level? This 6-week class supports students with a foundational knowledge and range of experience throwing on the wheel as they strengthen their technique. Demonstrations and instruction will cover centering, throwing, trimming and glazing, as well as forms and techniques determined by student interest. This class does not include Open Studio; class is structured to encourage individual projects with guided support and includes up to five fired and glazed finished pieces.

Explore BCA’s professional print studio as you transform your own drawings, photos, or found images into screenprinted artwork using professional tools and techniques. Learn how to apply photo emulsion, use a silkscreen exposure unit, and how to do a variety of printing processes with colorful water-based inks. Students will leave with a unique collection of printed pieces—think t-shirts, posters, and custom-made items to wear or share! Explore the world of textile crafting in this oneday, hands-on macrame wall hanging workshop. From paper mâché to painting, this mixed media camp is all about classic DIY arts and crafts. Using a variety of mediums, create fun projects that spark creativity and encourage personal expression while learning new techniques.

CLAY CREATIONS

Join us for a week of hands-on play in our clay studio! In this project-based camp, students will learn fun and functional art through handbuilding methods including pinch, coil, and slab. Using stamps, textures, and colorful underglazes, they’ll add decorative techniques that make their creations unique. Finished pottery will be available for pickup 4-6 weeks after the end of camp. All items will be dishwasher safe and lead-free.

Join us for a week of working with clay in the BCA ceramics studio. Create bowls, cups, sculptures, and more through wheel throwing and handbuilding techniques. Explore fun art-making techniques such as hand-printing, polymer clay jewelry making, fabric dying, and upcycling to design unique, usable works of art. From pencil pouches and custom keychains to personalized tote bags and more, campers will craft a collection of accessories that are as functional as they are fun!

Experience the magic of a traditional photographic darkroom! In this camp, students go on guided photo shoots in the South End of Burlington with our manual 35mm SLR film cameras and learn how to print their own photographs in our black and white darkroom.

Discover the art of metalsmithing! Students will learn fundamental techniques including sawing, filing, soldering, and finishing to create their own unique pieces of fine metal jewelry. Explore design concepts, work with professional tools, and develop skills in craftsmanship to bring their creative visions to life. Whether crafting a pendant, ring, or earrings, each participant will leave with a finished pieces of wearable art and newfound confidence.

Students work primarily on the potter’s wheel, learning basic throwing and forming techniques while creating functional pieces such as mugs, cups, and bowls. Students are also guided through various finishing techniques using the studio’s house slips and glazes. Class price includes your first bag of clay and all glazes and firings. This class is an introduction to working with clay and the ceramics studio, designed for beginners and those looking to explore both wheel throwing and handbuilding techniques. Over the course of eight weeks, students will learn the fundamentals of working with clay— from centering on the wheel to building forms by hand. Projects will include pieces such as mugs, bowls, and small sculptures. Students will also gain experience in surface design and glazing, learning how to decorate and finish work using the studio’s slips and glazes. Class price includes your first bag of clay, all glazes, and firings. Additional clay is sold separately.

This introduction to screenprinting shows students how to design and print t-shirts, posters, fine art, and more. Discover a variety of techniques for transferring and printing images using hand-drawn, photographic, or borrowed imagery. Students will learn how to apply photo emulsion, use an exposure unit, and print on a variety of surfaces. Class price includes the use of studio equipment, emulsion, transparencies, and ink. Students can bring their own screens or rent one through the studio.

In this six-week class, students create small designs with the relief technique of linoleum block printing. Students will learn how to carve and print their blocks by hand and with the etching press. Advanced techniques with twocolor, multi-block printing, and registration are also covered. This class is a fun opportunity to make cards and prints to share, as multiple prints can be created using the same block. Students should bring ideas and sketches (approx. 8x10” or smaller) to the first class. All other supplies and materials provided.

This four-week class provides an exploration of printmaking. Through demonstrations and hands-on learning, students are introduced to printmaking by creating one-of-a-kind prints. The class will cover creating trace monotypes and etchings on plexiglass and will teach students how to use materials and tools, as well as printing techniques by hand and with the etching press. Students will also develop an understanding of composition, use of color, and intuitive approaches to the medium. Class price includes basic supplies, including inks and paper.

Prerequisite: Screenprinting experience required. In this comprehensive class, students will learn how to transform an image into a photographic print using the screenprint process. Students will start out by learning how to use Photoshop to prepare the image, the principles of color separation for CMYK, preparing your screen to print, and creating an edition of multi-layered, photographic prints. Students can bring their own screens or rent one through the studio.

This class introduces students to the versatile medium of acrylic paint and the tools and techniques artists use to create successful works of art. Learn the basics of mixing colors, blending, and a variety of acrylic painting techniques. Starting with exercises to help understand basic principles, students will be led through representational painting by creating a landscape from reference images, and finish by painting a studio still life. Through group discussions and a supportive atmosphere, this class provides the opportunity for beginners and experienced painters to expand their practice. Price includes all basic materials and equipment.

Artist Mary Reilly will lead students through her unique, hyper-realistic approach to graphite pencil drawing, utilizing a variety of techniques and tools. Working from photos, students will learn the gridding method, making the drawing process more manageable. Students will also learn methods of layering graphite and lifting highlights to bring richness and volume to their pieces. Materials provided.

Explore the approachable medium of watercolor painting. Students will be led through a series of watercolor painting techniques including dry wash, wet wash, wet-on-wet washes, gradients, color blending, and brushwork. The class will focus on approaches to color use and mixing, techniques for adding depth and light, and elements of design and composition through painting from still lifes and reference photos.

Develop your figure drawing skills through demonstrations and guided exercises, drawing from observation with BCA’s experienced figure models. Students will strengthen their understanding of anatomy and drawing techniques through both quick-gesture and long-pose studies, gaining a stronger understanding of proportion, light, and shadow. This course is open to both beginners and experienced artists looking to refine their technique and expand their practice working from clothed and nude models.

Learn how to paint with non-toxic, watersoluble oils. Using direct observational skills, students will work from still lifes and from reference photographs to explore the landscape. Explore the exciting possibilities of abstract painting through a variety of fun prompts and exercises designed to help you open up and work intuitively. Experiment with the paint of your choice (water-soluble oils, acrylics, or watercolor) and a variety of other mixed media. Learn from fellow students while discussing techniques and ideas in a supportive setting. While prompts will be provided, please bring ideas and reference materials for inspiration. Beginners and experienced painters welcome. Shared paint, along with use of BCA’s palettes, easels, painting trays, and other shared equipment is included. Students are responsible for some additional supplies; supplies list will be sent with your class registration receipt.

Learn the basics of making a great photograph from initial exposure, to editing, and printing in this comprehensive class. The class starts with an overview of camera controls and functions, including aperture, shutter speed, ISO, shooting in RAW, lens choices, metering techniques, and more. Organizing and editing files in Adobe Lightroom is also covered, and students leave with a selection of high-quality prints made on BCA’s archival Epson printer. This class also includes assignments and supportive critique sessions to discuss the composition, content, and concepts explored in your photographs. Students should bring a DSLR or digital Mirrorless Rangefinder camera and a Maccompatible portable hard drive or flash drive.

Explore the traditional analog black and white darkroom. Students will learn how to properly expose black and white film, process film into negatives, and make silver gelatin prints. In this four-week class, students will be guided through the essentials of portrait photography. Build and strengthen your landscape photography skills through this immersive twoday workshop. Participants will learn essential camera operation and composition techniques and spend time making photographs outdoors at nearby locations (within a 15-minute drive of BCA Studios) with guidance from instructor Nate Rochefort. Students will then work in BCA’s Digital Lab to edit and print select images. This workshop is open to both beginner and experienced photographers. Students should bring a DSLR or mirrorless camera, a Mac-compatible portable hard drive or flash drive, a bagged lunch, and wear suitable clothing for light walking trails.

In this 90-minute private photography session, students work one-on-one with a BCA professional to photograph two-dimensional or three-dimensional artwork in the BCA Lighting Studio. BCA staff professionally light and photograph the work, and students receive one high-res TIFF and one JPEG of each image. During the photo session, students are responsible for handling artwork. BCA staff will apply basic color correction, density, and contrast adjustments to each image in BCA’s Digital Lab. Students may bring up to 10 total pieces that fall within these size limits: 2D flat artwork no larger than 40 x 60”; 3D sculptural pieces no larger than 24 x 24”. BCA provides a digital camera during the session and a flash drive of final images for students to keep. Looking for a different day and time? Located in downtown Burlington, the BCA Center is housed in the old Ethan Allen Firehouse. The center hosts contemporary art exhibitions, gallery programs, and hosts community events such as the BTV Market and Summer Concert Series. Meeting space is also available for rent.

BCA STUDIOS

Located in Burlington’s South End, BCA Studios programs include drawing/painting, print, clay, jewelry, and darkroom/digital photography. BCA offers seasonal studio memberships.

Refunds can only be given if the request is made at least two weeks prior to the beginning of the class/camp. A cancellation fee of 15% of the class price is nonrefundable. After the two-week window, a class credit will be processed at the discretion of the education director. Class credits are nonrefundable.
