Hello, we’re back again! I am so sorry we were not able to deliver your May & June magazines, this has been a strange and difficult few months for everyone.

I fell in love with gin when I went to a gin tasting event a few years ago. These events are a bit thin on the ground right now for social distancing reasons, so if you are gin-curious and wondering where to start I'm going to try to be your guide.

Gin is a flavoured alcohol, with juniper as the predominant botanical.

Juniper is a fragrant shrub and its aroma and taste should be the signature note in any gin. Even the name ‘gin’ is derived from either the French genièvre or the Dutch jenever, which both mean juniper.

You can add other botanical ingredients, but juniper should always be the primary one. There is actually a legal EU definition of gin: it must be a juniper-dominated spirit, with an agricultural origin and a 37.5% ABV. This means that as well as the main botanical being juniper, the base alcohol must be made from something natural such as wheat, barley, rye, molasses, potatoes or grapes, and there must be at least 37.5% of pure alcohol in the total volume of liquid.

London Dry Gin - This doesn't have to be made in London, it can be made anywhere in the world but it's important to know that it's the highest-quality gin you can produce. It has to be made with all-natural ingredients (no artificial flavourings), highquality alcohol and only contain 0.01g of sugar per litre of alcohol. Crucially you can't add any other flavourings after distillation. It's the purest form of gin and is a good place to start your gin journey. I would say No. 3 London Dry Gin is one of the best places to start your gin journey.

It's won the world's best gin 4 times and is a beautiful smooth gin which won't disappoint.

Regular distilled gin – This is made in a similar way to London Dry Gin but may have flavourings, essences and sugar added to it after the distillation process.

Craft distillers have been producing more variety and exciting new flavours recently. Broadly there are herbal gins (less sweet), floral gins (light and fragrant), fruity gins (sweeter) and citrussy gins (light and fresh). Look at the list of botanicals to see which appeal.

Geographical gins - Just as champagne has to come from a specific region in France so certain gins have to come from a particular geographical area. Mahón Gin can only come from Menorca, it's a sweeter style of gin which comes in various flavours, and Vilnius Gin from Lithuania, which is quite smooth and has a citrussy / pine flavour. The UK used to have a geographical gin - Plymouth gin but it lost its protected status in 2014.

Sloe gin - is actually a gin liqueur. It contains more sugar and its ABV is between 20-25%, which is below the minimum requirement of a spirit.

Old Tom gins - An older style of gin.

These gins are sweeter because in the 18th Century, when gin was also very popular sugar or honey was added to disguise bad-quality gin they used.

Nowadays Old Tom Gins are made to a high standard and are the gin you would use in a Tom Collins cocktail, which should be made with soda water rather than tonic, because tonic would add too much sweetness to an already sweet alcohol.

What walking can do for your health During lockdown I was furloughed, and my husband John had to work from home. We decided to use the time it usually took us to commute (an hour each way) to walk. We'd never really walked as a form of exercise before...we'd never really taken any form of exercise before, so this was something new.

We worked out a route and as we were used to getting up at 6am to travel to work, we decided that staying in that routine seemed sensible. We wouldn't be too out of sync on our return to work. The mornings were becoming lighter at the start of lockdown so it wasn't dark. We have walked for just over an hour every day for ten weeks and this is what we've discovered.

Walking trims your waistline - Both John and I had the start of middle age spread. Over ten weeks I've dropped a dress size and John has discovered he's wearing the trousers that prior to lockdown he'd been considering donating to charity.

Walking relieves arthritis pain - After four weeks John noticed that his arthritis pain seemed less.

This seemed counterintuitive so I consulted the

arthritis society website and discovered that walking is recommended as it does indeed help reduce inflammation and stiffness in your joints.

The important thing to remember is to walk 'correctly'. Hold your head up; keep your neck, shoulders and back relaxed; swing your arms naturally, with a slightly bent elbow; tighten your stomach muscles a little to give yourself a supported core, and breathe deeply as you walk.

Walking improves your mental wellbeing - At the start of lockdown I think we both felt anxious about all the uncertainty. As the weeks progressed, while we walked we discussed our worries and thrashed out solutions. I certainly began to feel in a better place mentally and as though I could cope better with life in general.

Being outside, breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the sunshine definitely helped to clear some headspace each day.

Walking can reduce blood pressure - John’s blood pressure had been sneaking upwards and our GP had been monitoring it with a view to starting medication. When it became clear that he wasn't going to be examined by a doctor for some time I bought a home blood pressure monitor online. We tested it out to make sure the readings matched those of the clinic then forgot about it! After six weeks (on the date he was supposed to return to the GP) we tried it to discover his blood pressure was just within normal range. By week ten it was well within the normal range. Mine too has dropped significantly.

Crucially throughout this period neither of us has felt like we were ‘exercising’. Walking felt natural and easy. I know this article is anecdotal and personal but there is plenty of research to support exercise being almost as important as diet in controlling type-2 diabetes; that it helps with balance and co-ordination, so can help to prevent falls in older people, meaning they are more likely to stay out of hospital and finally it helps boost the immune system which is important for obvious reasons right now.

We will definitely continue to fit walking into our day even when life returns to a more normal pattern.

This month - Lockdown musings Back in May garden centres became some of the first businesses allowed to reopen to the public.

For gardeners stuck at home (even though we understood and supported the lockdown), it's been a frustrating time. We've been unable to plant during one of the best springs I can remember.

And for many of the UK's growers it has been devastating. Millions of lost plants nurtured to be at their best by Easter were lost. The scale of the issue was mind-boggling. Garden centres and nurseries usually make the bulk of their income during the early growing season as people prepare their plots for the summer but instead they've been forced to compost or recycle millions of plants, leaving one in three growers in serious financial difficulties, with little possibility of recouping their losses later in the year.

I was glad to see nurseries and garden centres reopening and in spite of my own apprehension about venturing out, I decided to go to my local garden centre reasoning that the open outdoor spaces meant transmission of coronavirus was less likely and it would be easier to maintain social distancing.

There were staff in the car park and the queue markings were 2m apart. The trolleys were cleaned before being handed to the customers and social distancing was observed throughout the one-way system.

There were fewer plants on display which puzzled me for a second until I realised that growers couldn't take the risk of planting a few weeks before when they had no idea whether they would have to destroy those plants too.

Such a heart-breaking decision for them to have to make.

My own garden has been a source of solace throughout lockdown, but what has been

particularly nice is the number of people who have discovered gardening during this period. There is a lot of psychological research which concludes that nurturing plants and flowers diverts our attention away from stresses and anxieties in our lives and goodness knows there's been way too much stress and anxiety recently.

So, as we hit July is there anything easy which you can still plant, and which will still grow? The good news is yes.

Nasturtiums can be sown throughout this month. They are known for their brightly coloured flowers and attractive foliage. There are trailing, climbing, and dwarf varieties. The showy flowers can be single or double and come in fiery shades of reds, oranges, and yellows. Leaves are pale green and umbrellashaped with long stems. They are the perfect flowers for beginner gardeners so if the kids have been dying to have a go at gardening these are your go-to plant. Sow the seeds and within 7-10 days, you should see sprouting.

They are drought tolerant and ideal for hanging baskets and containers. Even better, you can add the flowers, buds and young leaves to salads, and they have the most wonderful peppery taste.

Love-in-the-mist are easy to grow and have distinctive seed heads. These can be sown until early July and also again in September so they will get a head start for next year.

And of course, you can still plant sunflowers.

Who doesn't love a sunflower? Plant one for each member of the family and see whose grows the most. You could give prizes for the tallest, the prettiest or the largest flower.

Chidham Coastal Walk This month’s trek was completed just a er the easing of lockdown, it is a walk I have done many mes and is a peaceful coastal walk of 9km (6 miles) around the headland of Chidham and Cobnor. Careful planning of this walk is required by checking the de mes beforehand, this peninsula of land cannot be walked around at high de as the most southerly part of the path near Cobnor Point floods at high de and is therefore impassable.

The walk starts at the small Cobnor Amenity car park just south of the village of Chidham and is a circular trek taking in both the village and the coast, that also incorporates part of the ‘London’s Lost Route to the Sea’ long distance path too.

From the car park head towards the village of Chidham on the well‐kept path through the fields past Chidmere Pond, a private lake in the grounds of Chidmere Farm. The pond cannot be seen, as it is hidden behind some tall hedging, however I believe the gardens and lake are stunning and have been open to the public in the past as part of the Na onal Open Gardens day. At the village you can either go past St Mary’s church which was built c.1210 and then through fields or you can take the road through the quant village past the 18th Century pub, I prefer the quieter field route.

Approximately 300m to the north of the village, on the le , is the footpath that leads to the western shore of the peninsula, on reaching the raised path at the shoreline head south and keep to the coastline. Just past Chidham point the route will be on the stony shore as there has been extensive erosion of the sea wall, which has had many a empted repairs on it, but the forces of nature have taken their toll and broken a lot of the concrete repairs up. A new path further inland has been created as an easier route that cuts across the fields leading to the southern edge of the peninsula, however keeping to the shoreline will ensure you get great views across the wide mudflats of Nutbourne Marshes. A Site of Special Scien fic Interest that covers 956 acres of the harbour, the marshes are not accessible but can be viewed from the path, a very tranquil spot where the sounds of the many feeding wildfowl can be heard.

Con nue further along the shore to the p of the peninsula where a line of ancient oaks cling to the bank, all twisted and ba ered by the salty winds, sea waves, and sun. It’s amazing how they have adapted themselves to such a harsh environment. A great spot for a break si ng in the shade of these trees that overlook Pilsey Sand and East Head Spit with many pleasure yachts passing through the busy Chichester Channel. There is a hide at this point which enables some addi onal birdwatching and has some local informa on which is worth stopping to read.

A further short walk on the pebbly shore past Cobnor Point leads to some steps up to a purpose made accessible path to Cobnor Ac vity Trust, a centre that has been delivering outdoor ac vi‐ es for youths since the mid 50’s. From this part of the path you have great views up the Chich‐ ester Channel and across to Itchenor. The footpath is well signposted and easy to follow past the ac vity centre, be sure to take a look at the old Thames barge ‘Pride of Sheppey’ that has been moored here since 1963, then head up the eastern side of the peninsula on a high raised bank, it is very evident that this side is more protected from natures elements and therefore has much less erosion. Just before leaving the shoreline you can look across to the far side of Bosham Channel to see the pre y waterside village of Bosham itself, with the houses seemingly all clus‐ tered around the village church. A short path inland takes you back to the car park to complete the walk.

Escape Rooms have gone online Do you like escape rooms? Have you always fancied having a go at one but never got around to it before lockdown started?

Escape rooms became popular over the past couple of years, with families and groups of friends who like a challenge. Kind of like The Crystal Maze (remember that?) in concept where you have to solve puzzles as a team to 'escape the room'.

As physical escape rooms have had to close, so these businesses have been quick to adapt and take the experience online.

You can play as a family or with groups of friends as a social experience.

There are many online; some are free, and some are paid for. the free ones are a good way to try the experience to see if you enjoy it.

Hogwarts Digital Escape Room was created by an American librarian in

Pennsylvania. It's loosely based on Hogwarts and the puzzles are fun. My family enjoyed it but found it quite easy and we were finished very quickly. But we discovered we enjoyed the concept and signed up for others which are more involved.

Trapped In The Web is a game you can play solo or with a team to complete tasks that will take between one to two hours. It's reasonably priced at around ÂŁ8 per person.

There are five themed rooms to choose from: Space Race; Cabin Fever; A Night at the Theatre; School’s Out, and Out of Hours. There is a different storyline attached to each one and different clues to collect and puzzles to solve.

These family-friendly escape rooms will get you started, but if you find you've got the bug you can find many more complex versions online.

What have I missed?

Or have I gained‌ A while back I wrote an article about cuckoos on our beautiful reserves. Having been locked down I have missed them and many of my other spring highlights. However, being forced to stop, slow down and restrict my movements, gave me the opportunity to watch the season evolve in my own backyard. Observing the leaves unfurling as each day passed. Catching the first flowers opening and the sudden appearance of the insects they attract. The different bees and butterflies emerging with the onset of their individual flight seasons. It has been a joy to discover species that I never knew lived in my little patch, like the tiny yellow-faced bees starring back at me from the mauve flowers of chives, a ruby-tailed wasp glinting like a jewel in the sunshine as it explored the crevices of the brickwork. Recording the dawn chorus, I was astonished by the sheer volume and abundance of song emanating from outside my bedroom window. I have watched the blackbird take his daily bath, the wren pick her way through the dog rose and fox cubs take their first outings into the wider world. And all this is in the middle of town.

Of course, I am not the only one to have found comfort and respite in the wildlife on my doorstep. Getting back to work is a strange sensation. When lockdown was imposed I missed our wonderful and increasingly important nature reserves, finding solace in my own little green space and the gardens surrounding us – something I would not normally have been afforded. Now I have returned and I am focusing on the reserve again, I cannot help but wonder what is happening in my small patch and yearn for the chance to just sit and watch the delights it holds. Never under estimate the wild places around us, whether they are the big parks and reserves or the modest collection of pots on your patio or balcony. They are all important - to wildlife and to our well-being.

As lockdown eases, we should be even more vigilant about handwashing.

You can't catch coronavirus through your skin but if contaminated hands touch your face then all the belated social distancing in the world won't help you.

I don't know about you, but I am sick to death of the Happy Birthday song. I will never sing it again when this is over...we were surely due a new celebratory melody after almost 130 years anyway But you still need to scrub with soap for 20 seconds to remove those pathogens and twenty seconds is a long time when you're standing at a sink, so here are a few alternative 20-second tunes...which will probably give you an earworm for a week.

One friend also suggested reciting The Lord's Prayer, which is fine if praying is your thing, or you feel divine intervention is necessary!

Ballerina Bella and the Lucky Locket

It’s a parent’s worst nightmare: you are waiting for your child to come home from school and they don’t. This is the situation that Claire and Matt found themselves in when their 11year-old son, Evan did not come home from school after football practice. The police are called, and the search is on. Claire and Matt are torn apart by the events and as the months drift on they give up all hope of Evan coming home.

Bella loves to dance. Bella wants to be a ballerina. But there is a problem. No matter what she is doing she finds it almost impossible to concentrate as her imagination runs wild. A cat in the garden becomes an escaped tiger from the zoo.

A ribbon on the floor during her ballet class becomes a mouse. And a spider swinging from its cobweb makes her think of swinging on a swing as she forgets the exercise they are supposed to be doing.

Everyone is exasperated.

But, as the title suggests, Evan is indeed found. But the boy that returns to them is not the same boy that went missing.

Refusing to talk to anyone he is withdrawn, only finding short moments of happiness and peace when visiting his grandparents on their farm. The police try to ascertain what happened but to no avail. Until another boy goes missing.

But can Bella focus during her dance show? Can she prove herself to be the dancer she wants to be and win best dancer?

This lovely picture book will enthral young dancers with wonderful illustrations showing pirouettes, jetes, and arabesques. Any dance teacher will tell you that children get distracted and this is a lovely way of helping them understand the importance of staying focused.

What drew me to this book is the fact that the focus is on what happened AFTERWARDS. We all watch news reports of children who are abducted and sometimes there is a happy ending. For us, as onlookers, that is where the story ends. But is it possible for a a family just pick up and carry on as if nothing happened? How on earth do you rebuild those lost moments with your child?

Animal lovers warned of pet buying scams Sussex Police are urging people to be cautious after several people in Sussex have become victims of pet buying scams.

The suspect typically advertises kittens or puppies for sale online and uses the current Covid‐19 outbreak as the reason why the pet can’t be visited. They will send photos and / or videos in order to persuade the victim to make a deposit or even full payment in advance. They may also try to get the victim to cover other “unforeseen costs” such as vaccinations or insurance for the animal.

Victims so far have responded to adverts on Facebook and on pet selling sites. Payments were made yet the pets were never provided.

In order to protect yourself from becoming a victim of this type of scam we recommend the following: Do your research – research the sellers carefully prior to parting with any money and check whether they have any terms and conditions or a return policy.

Trust your instinct – if it doesn’t feel right then walk away.

Choose a payment method that protects you – If you are happy to go ahead with the purchase of a pet then avoid paying by bank transfer as you are not protected should you become a victim of fraud. Alternatively use a credit card or a payment service such as PayPal.

The area today which is occupied by Admiralty Gardens where it meets the sea, stood the White Mill. This was a seven-storey white stone smock mill, where the sweeps (sails) could make the 27 h.p. which was needed to drive the four pairs of stones. This mill stood for approx. 80 years until the 1880’s.

Another mill in Felpham was the Black Mill. One of the earliest records is of William Cosens in 1801 purchasing an area named Mill Field for the sum of £555. This covered an area of land from Admiralty Road to the sea. By 1806 William had built a wooden post mill, which stood on a brick base and could be rotated.

By 1866 Edward Stubbington had become a developer selling plots of Mill Field. The first five houses were built facing Felpham Road and he made a right of way to the rear of the houses, which today is Havelock Road.

Sadly, in the late 1880’s the mill had ceased to be active and by the 1890s had lost its sails, it remained on the skyline until demolition in 1907. Around 1884 plots were offered by auction and described as, “most of the plots have a depth of 85ft. and offer the most charming sites for small villas which are now in great demand, those now in the course of completion being already let. Small houses at rentals varying from £15 to £20 per annum will readily sell for occupation.” Mill Field was subsequently marked out into five roads, namely Havelock, Canning, Clyde, Outram and Sea View.

CORONAVIRUS - CARING FOR THE COMMUNITY From: Dave Smart: Chairman Felpham Parish Council Volunteers in Felpham have been helping residents with anything they need during the coronavirus crisis; from collecting and delivering medication and pre-paid shopping, to being a friendly voice on the end of the phone.

The team of 40 volunteers are co-ordinated by Felpham Emergency Resilience Group (FERG) which was launched four years ago specifically to support the community during an emergency.

It’s not the first time FERG has helped in an emergency but this was unprecedented. As coronavirus hit in March 2020 FERG activated its response and many of its existing volunteers offered help. Some could not do so for personal reasons but the number of volunteers grew quickly as more people new to the group – joined the push to support the community.

Soon 40 volunteers were ready to start work and FERG’s coronavirus response “went live” in early April after extensive work contacting local pharmacists, shops, GP surgeries and other organisations to make them aware help was on hand. It also coincided with coronavirus community hubs at West Sussex County Council and Arun District Council starting.

Almost immediately calls for help started and in the first nine weeks the volunteers delivered more than 500 prescriptions as well as pre-paid grocery shopping for those shielding; they telephoned people who were isolated at home and were feeling anxious; and helped with requests for information or useful telephone numbers and offered simple human contact at a difficult time. As well as Felpham they supported people in Middleton, Elmer, Yapton and Bognor.

Our volunteers, who I cannot praise highly enough, took to the task with enthusiasm, willingness, and empathy. It was so rewarding and humbling to receive many calls of thanks from those that we helped. We gave them peace of mind at one of the most challenging times that anyone could ever face.

The coronavirus crisis is far from over and FERG is still here to help but I, along with Felpham Parish Councillor Gloria Moss who has been co-ordinating the volunteers with me, would like to place on record our thanks to all involved.

We, and everyone you have helped, are so grateful for the work you have done; and the commitment, caring and sympathetic manner you have shown. If ever there was a sense of people helping their community this is it. You have responded enthusiastically at every time of asking, without complaint or hesitation; just with a desire to care for others.

FERG was established in 2016 after Councillor Gloria Moss, who has significant experience of emergency response, was tasked with launching the initiative. As part of the group I brought a background in crisis management and training. As joint co-ordinators we now meet regularly with our volunteers for training and information sharing.

FERG has previously supported residents evacuated from their homes following a major fire, in Bognor Regis and were asked to help by the authorities to give early safety information to the residents of a nearby village during a potentially toxic fire.
