Hello, welcome to the joint July / August Summer edition of Felpham in Focus. At the time of writing the weather seems unable to decide if it is summer or autumn!

I know our gardens need the rain but I hope it clears up in time for all the events going on around the area at this time of year. The ever popular Fun on the Prom event takes place on Felpham seafront on 3rd August, the same weekend as the Hotham Park fete whilst the annual Bognor Regis Kite Festival is returning to KGV in Felpham over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Details of other exciting events over the summer can be found in our Community pages.

Whatever you are doing, I hope the weather is kind & you manage to get a break over the next few weeks.

How to boost the wi-fi signal in your home’s weak spots Recently a friend of mine decided to convert his garage to a games room. The big screen TV was to be the main feature.

We all gathered for the big turn on to experience Netflix in full ultra HD. But all we got was a blocky, stuttering, unwatchable excuse for entertainment.

It turned out that his wireless router (the bit that connects to his broadband) was plugged in at the opposite end of the house. The reception at this end of the house had always been poor, but the extra wall of the garage was just too much for the signal to push through. Result? No internet!

What to do? The router had to stay by the phone socket so moving that to the centre of the house wasn't an option. Running a network cable (a permanent wire) from the router to the TV was a non-starter because it would involve a lot of work.

This meant he had to work out a different way to boost the Wi-Fi signal in the garage.

but it's not hard if you know what you're doing. There are YouTube tutorials which can help.

The second option is the simplest, and ultimately the one he settled on – a powerline adaptor. This is a box that plugs into your router and then into a mains socket. It actually uses your house wiring to send your broadband signal around the house. All you need to do is buy a powerline Wi-Fi extender and plug it into the wall in the room where you need it most. It’s like you're sitting right beside your Wi-Fi point.

After a quick visit to the shops, he plugged in both devices. The set-up was quick and easy (literally pressing two buttons) and he was up and running with full broadband speed. His teens could now get Youtube in the garden as an extra bonus because he put an extra extender in a socket on the wall next to the patio.

I'd had a similar problem in my home and had discovered Wi-Fi extenders and repeaters (different companies call them by different names, but they all do the same thing).

There were two options: A Wi-Fi repeater is basically a second router. You put it where you receive a good signal and it then creates a new Wi-Fi area that connects to your broadband. He could have sited that in the centre of the house and thus improved the signal in the garage. There would be a bit of setting up to get this working as you have to log on to the repeater with a computer,

Choose the perfect Hat Weddings, Race events, Polo; there are many opportunities throughout the summer to wear a hat, but which one should you choose? How do you avoid making an expensive mistake?

First you need to look at your face shape.

Oval-shaped faces can get away with almost any style. A large brimmed hat should be tilted backwards slightly so that it frames your face. If you have a square or round face, choose a hat with a large brim and wear it slanted. A long face looks lovely with a beret style or even a Matador style

The Cathedral’s Learning and Engagement (L&E) Department is currently looking to expand its team of Volunteers to work with visiting schools, colleges, adults and families. The Department has a very active calendar of events, visits, study days and children’s holiday activities throughout the year.

Volunteering offers an opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and become involved in the many aspects of Cathedral life. No previous experience is necessary as training will be given.

This summer you will be watching the various gallant people jumping from the end of the Pier for the birdman event and who will also provide us with entertainment.

One of the most iconic sights at any pier, and Bognor was no exception was the arrival of the paddle steamers that called at Bognor Pier prior to 1906 much to the delight of both the residents and visitors. However one of the major problems for these paddle steamers was the problem of ground swell and the lack of a correct landing stage. The small structure was only 60 feet by 9 feet and was certainly inadequate for such large boats as the "Brighton Queen."

In 1936 a new landing stage was opened for steamboat traffic.

Pictures of the opening of this landing stage were shown both at the Pier Theatre and the Picturedrome, For a number of years it was possible to travel the 100ft length of the pier on a variety of miniature trains. Long before the days of the Birdman Rally, the pier was an important site for the Diving and Swimming Exhibitions that were held from the 1930’s. One such was an Angus Kilmot Kinslea who was permitted to give exhibitions during the summer months. Another activity was the launching of kayaks off the side of the Pier as an additional attraction. During the summer the owner was allowed to take a collection from bystanders for his own benefit and the Pier would provide a benefit night for him.

This month - Black-eyed Susan You might not know its name, but you are probably familiar with the Rudbeckia. A late summer perennial daisy. It's sometimes called Coneflower or Blackeyed Susan.

It flowers from early August to late September and I find it a valuable addition to the late summer garden. It does particularly well in full sun in rich, well-drained soil. You can sow them as annuals indoors in spring to set out after frost or plant as perennials in spring or autumn. Divide every 3 to 4 years and deadhead to avoid self-seeding, though personally I see self-seeding as a bonus trait in a plant! Mildew can be an issue on the foliage but can be avoided if you don't overcrowd the plants. Watch the young foliage because slugs and snails find it tasty. Once the plants are established this isn't a problem.

Rudbeckia ‘Golden compass’ produces masses of classic bright yellow and black Rudbeckia flowers on a bushy plant. It grows up to 70cm in height and can be grown from seed as a half-hardy annual or a short-lived hardy perennial.

Rudbeckia ‘Irish eyes’ is a more unusual variety with a yellowish rather than brown cone, as well as yellow florets. It repeat flowers from July through to October.

If your soil is on the dry side, try Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Deamii’. It produces shining, golden flowers with jet-black cones from early September to late October and into November. It has slightly smaller flowers, but they are lovely, and abundant.

Rudbeckias naturally grow in dry savannahs, grassland prairies and in the glades of rocky upland forests across North America but they have become a much-loved bushy stalwart of the herbaceous border and will delight from late summer right through the autumn.

Summer surely isn’t summer without a village fete. Part country fair, part a sale of home-grown and locally made produce, part a celebration of community, the English village fete is a social institution, barely changed since the 1920s.

The Village fete is enshrined in our literary history, from The Famous Five, to PG Wodehouse and Agatha Christie, the Village fete has provided the perfect backdrop against which to set a drama or two, and never attend any fete in Midsomer which is also attended by Inspector Barnaby!

If you want a measure of how well a village is thriving in 21st Century Britain, take a look at its summer fete. More of us are looking for a sense of community in a Britain that seems in danger of fragmenting. To that end tenth generation locals will rub shoulders

with commuters, second homers and young families, to discuss the merits of Bert’s onions, Sharon’s Victoria Sponge, and whether young Tyler will win the talent competition with his street dance routine.

Let’s face it, where else can you buy a pot of rhubarb and ginger preserve, enter a competition to guess the weight of a cake, bounce on a bouncy castle and throw a wet sponge at the vicar…or scoutmaster…or head teacher, or all three if you’re lucky?

Village fetes are alive and well in Britain, and I for one am very happy about that. I have just moved from the town to a village and intend to enter my scones in the baked goods competition this year. I doubt I’ll win but it’s the taking part that matters. Now I wonder if there will be a murder…

The Tiger who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr

A child going missing is every parent’s worst nightmare.

And many books have been written with this as the main plot device, as the parents try to cope with events that follow.

However, this debut novel approaches it from a different angle.

Sometimes days play out in endless repetition. Nothing exciting ever happens.

But what if one day the unexpected occurred?

Esme is 11 years old and for her, ballet is life. She is on the brink of every young ballerina’s dream as she is told that she is ready to go ‘en pointe’. But this joy is snatched from her one evening as the family gather to enjoy a meal. Suddenly, and inexplicably, Esme’s four-year-old sister Lily disappears. The family starts to fall apart, but as readers we experience this through the eyes of Esme, not her parents.

In the second half of the novel the action switches to Paris eight years later where Esme is performing as a ballerina. We learn of the intervening years. How Esme felt that she lost so much more than a sister; she lost her parents too. She has used dance to take herself away from it all. Until she receives a phone call from her older sister, on the other side of the Atlantic.

Are the family about to learn of Lily’s fate, and how will they bring themselves together, healing divisions and unspoken accusations?

Just like any day Sophie is having tea in the kitchen with her mother, when the doorbell rings. They wonder who it could be. The milkman with his milk float? The grocer on his bike? Or Sophie’s daddy?

What they are not expecting is a large tiger, who joins them at the table. Just what will happen when a tiger comes to tea?

This classic children’s picture book is now more than 50 years old and yet it still continues to enchant children. A simple story and delightful illustrations make this a favourite among many young readers. A TV adaptation is due to air at the end of 2019 but do make sure you share the original with your children first. Judith Kerr, who wrote and illustrated over 30 other books, including the Mog series, died in May this year aged 95.

It seems a perfect time to celebrate her life.

Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital During the First World War, scores of wounded soldiers were sent to Bognor Regis and accommodated in temporary wooden huts under the care of local GP Dr S Lane. Very quickly the people of Bognor realised that the area needed a “proper” hospital and so a local man, Mr James Fleming, donated Springfield House on Chichester Road, along with £2000 to furnish and equip it as a hospital. It opened on 16th July 1919 and had 8 beds, a small operating theatre and an outpatients department. In its first year, the hospital cared for 26 inpatients but by 1928, admissions had increased to 258 and the local population demanded a larger and more adequate hospital.

So, James Fleming donated the adjoining land and, with the local community holding lots of fundraising events (including the proceeds from the first film showing at the new Bognor Picturedrome Cinema), they raised enough money to build a new hospital. The foundation stone was laid in 1931 and the new hospital was opened on 24th September 1932.

The new hospital had 29 beds, x-ray facilities, a casualty department, theatres, an outpatients department, two adult wards and a children’s ward, and cost the grand sum of £31,000. It also had a carved wood memorial in the entrance hall, which listed the names of the 324 men from the town who had given their lives in the war.

Shortly after the introduction of the NHS in 1948, the Western Regional Hospital Board announced plans to close the hospital but the people of Bognor had other ideas! They held public protests and marches and showed such support for their hospital that the Board withdrew their plans.

The Friends of Bognor Hospital was founded in 1953 by two local businessmen, Leslie Smith and Don Baines. Their mission was to raise funds to ensure that the people of Bognor Regis could continue to receive first rate medical care close to home. They purchased equipment and amenities that were not funded by the Ministry to improve comfort & efficiency for the patients. Over the next few years, services at the hospital grew to include a hydrotherapy pool & day rooms and in 1959, another extension was added costing £10,000. Then, in 1985, plans were announced to further build onto the existing hospital to increase beds and create additional space for Physiotherapy, a new hydrotherapy pool, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and more area for car parking. The new extension would also include a Chapel and Don Baines designed the stained glass windows. The new wing was opened in 1991 by Princess Alexandra with the 2 newest wards named after Leslie Smith & Don Baines.

The hospital today is busier than ever & holds many more services to look after our local community.

The War Memorial now stands in the heart of the building and the Friends of Bognor Hospital hold a service there each Remembrance Sunday. The Community Nursing services are based there and several other NHS organisations utilise the site to hold their satellite clinics and services. There is a Renal Dialysis Unit so patients don’t have to travel to Portsmouth for dialysis; 48 inpatient beds; teams including: Chronic Pain Service; MSK Service; Bladder & Bowel Service; Carers’ Health; Rheumatology unit; Podiatry; School Nurses: Wheelchair Services; IV Therapy; Audiology; and the Minor Injuries Unit now treats around 70 patients each day.

As a non-acute hospital, the government funding is considerably less which is why they rely heavily on the fundraising efforts of the Friends of the Hospital. The Friends of Bognor hospital hold a Summer Fete each year and the local community are amazingly supportive and have turned out in all weathers to support it and help with the fundraising efforts. Summer delights at Pagham Harbour & Medmerry For a lot of birds the breeding the season is coming to a close and youngsters are learning how to fend for themselves. It is a time for the hardworking parents to consider their own well-being. Despite being hard wearing and being preened constantly, feathers do wear out and need replacing. Moulting is a big drain on a birds energy reserves and why many birds moult mid to late summer avoiding the breeding and migration seasons. The process can also leave the bird vulnerable particularly when replacing flight feathers, so during this time they are much less conspicuous, both in sight and sound, leaving us wondering where all the birds have gone. However, there is much more to be found in our British summer countryside…

Now is a time to marvel at the smaller creatures. Caterpillars that have been a food source for so many growing chicks have been metamorphosing into butterflies. Meadow browns flit jauntily over the grasslands and tortoiseshells sup nectar from thistle flowers. Amorous soldier beetles cover umbilifers. The larvae of red soldier beetles eat slugs and snails, while the adults feed on aphids making them very much the gardener’s friend.

All the while crickets and grasshoppers constantly chirrup in the background, reminding me of how I spent hours as a child trying to catch them. Summer is a time for families and young children to explore and discover. At RSPB Pagham we have a full program of family events throughout the summer holiday, from pond-dipping and bug hunting to seashore safaris and butterfly counts. Meanwhile the three tawny owl chicks did ‘branch’ successfully and the both families of blue tits have fledged as well. However, both blue tits families had at least 4 eggs unhatched each. We believe there must have been a drop in temperature during the incubation period chilling the eggs, showing how susceptible they are to changes in weather conditions. As for the kestrels, all five eggs have hatched and the chicks are growing fast as mum and dad strive to keep up with their hungry demands. The youngsters will not fly until they are just over a month old and even then will be dependent on their parents for a further month

July is National Ice Cream Month. Celebrate with this home made raspberry ripple Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes Servings: 12 Ingredients 250g raspberries 225g caster sugar 2 large eggs 4 egg yolks 600ml double cream Raspberries or other fruit for serving Method Place the raspberries in a pan with 2 tbsp of the sugar. Cook on a medium heat until sugar dissolves into the pulp. Simmer for 5 mins until thickened, then push the pulp through a sieve into a bowl and discard the seeds.

Place the eggs, egg yolks and remaining sugar into a bowl. Whisk with an electric

whisk hand whisk to combine everything, then place over a pan of gently simmering water – the bowl should not touch the water. Beat with the electric whisk for 3-4 mins until thick and pale. Remove from heat and continue beating with the whisk until cool.

In another bowl, whisk the cream until it forms soft peaks, then gently fold into the cool egg mix until just combined. Pour the mix into a shallow container or dish that can be frozen. Just before you freeze the mixture gently swirl the raspberry puree through, cover with cling film and freeze for at least 6 hrs.

Remove from the freezer about 20 minutes before serving. Place scoops of the ice cream into bowls with extra raspberries or other fruit. It's also gorgeous in cones.

Bersted Park Art Trail.

After reading Sarah Davey’s feature last month about staying at home and discovering local areas i thought it would be a great idea to feature a local walk that is accessible to all. So this month a 3km (1.8 mile) trek takes in all the wooden sculptures at Bersted Park that have been created by local chainsaw artist Simon Groves. Bersted Park is the new housing development in North Bersted and is bordered by the redirected A259, within the 26 hectare site are large areas that cannot be built on and now feature the art trail along with a trim trail, lake, sports pitches and a community centre. Arun District council are managing this area in an environmentally friendly way with fields of wild flowers. Over a two year project Berkeley Homes have funded a total of 10+ sculptures as part of their conditions for this new development. Local residents were consulted for ideas on what the sculptures should be and each piece has been expertly carved out of locally sourced sustainable oak. A trail map can be found on the Arun District Council’s website which can be printed off and shows three routes of varying lengths.

The walk starts at the Bersted Park Community Centre and to the right of the building at the edge of the car park can be found the first sculpture featuring a ‘Trail Guide’ showing the three routes. The route featured in this article is the full route marked in yellow. Follow the trail into the fields towards the second sculpture which is a tractor and bales of hay, great for children who can sit on this and imagine that they are farming the fields.

Keeping to the edge of the field continue to the lake, this small body of water has been strategically created as flood relief to this low lying area. It is connected to a number of streams and drainage ditches and ultimately links up with the Aldingbourne Rife. At the end of the lake is a carved wooden sofa where you can sit and take in the native wetland habitat, Yellow Flag Iris can be seen along the edge amongst many wild flowers and the rare water vole may even be seen. In the middle of the lake is an island that features an egrets sculpture, the white of the birds can just be seen above the bushes. The route goes round the lake and along the southern edge of the park to the trim trail, made up of various outdoor exercise apparatus this is great for those who want to further workout and burn a few extra calories. At this point a rest can be had on the dragonfly bench and whilst sitting here the orchid sculpture can be seen a little further on.

Double back and follow Barton’s lane to the entrance of the sports field where a great sculpture depicting a football boot and cricket stumps stands. From here the walk continues outside of the sports field, however an eleventh sculpture can be found on this field which is well worth taking a detour to, as the artwork is really amazing. At this point in the trail swifts can be seen circling around, some great views of the South Downs can be had and a group of three grazing sheep can be seen strategically placed in the middle of the meadow. Just past here is the WW2 Pill Box, one of thousands that were built along the south coast in 1940 which would have been manned by the home guard to hamper any enemy invasion. At the far corner of Bersted Park can be seen the waymarker pointing to key areas like Eastfield conservation area and Bersted Brooks that are also worth further exploring if you want to extend the walk. Follow the sign’s direction and head back to the community centre where the last sculpture called historic piece can be seen on the trail. A great walk for all the family to enjoy.

Home‐grown champions from the past The Championships, Wimbledon is the most famous tennis event in the British sporting calendar. It was first contested in 1877 and played on outdoor grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) in the Wimbledon suburb of London, United Kingdom.

The Ladies' Singles tournament began in 1884, and the women's game has developed massively over the last century.

We are all familiar with the incredible Williams sisters, but our own Nation has a pretty impressive history in the Women's singles, which is often overlooked by the British media.

Dorothy Round Little won her first title in 1934 — the same year as her British male counterpart Fred Perry also won his first.

She won her second Wimbledon title at age 29 in 1937. A devout Christian, she often refused to play on Sundays. She published two books, Modern Lawn Tennis and Tennis For Girls. After her retirement in 1939 she worked as a coach, journalist, and president of the Worcester Lawn Tennis Club.

Florence Angela Margaret Mortimer Barrett beat another English player Christine Truman Janes to become Wimbledon's women's singles champion in 1961. She was aged 29 and partially deaf.

played the famous Billie Jean King several times but never beat her until her win at Wimbledon. Haydon-Jones was also the first left-handed female singles player to win the championship.

Virginia Wade was a maths graduate, famed for her powerful serve. She defeated Billie Jean King at the US Open, earning her first Grand Slam title. She went on to win the Australian Open in 1972, and in 1977, nearly a decade after her first victory, Wade would become Wimbledon's last British singles winner for 36 years. The year she won, defeating Dutch player Betty Stöve at Wimbledon was the Queen's Silver Jubilee and Queen Elizabeth II herself was present to enjoy her victory.

It remains to be seen whether current British number one Johanna Konta can better her semi-final performance in 2017 to add her name to the list of amazing female British tennis players who have held the Wimbledon trophy aloft.

County Lines ‘County Lines’ is a recent term used by Police and Partner Agencies to refer to drug networks that originate from large urban areas such as London to more rural communi es. These can be run by both gangs and organised crime groups, both of whom use children and young people and vulnerable adults to carry out illegal ac vity on their behalf.

The organised crime groups tend to use a local property, generally belonging to a vulnerable person, as a base for their ac vi es. This is known as cuckooing and will o en happen by force or coercion.

We have experienced children travelling from London to our county to deal drugs on behalf of gangs, as well as Sussex children being exploited and targeted by London gangs to deal drugs locally. Local Emergency Resilience and Planning Are you familiar with Riparian ownership responsibilities? Do you have a water course adjacent to your property? It is a legal requirement to ensure that the ditches remain clear and unblocked. This issue has contributed to the misery caused by domestic flooding in the past. We welcomed residents from Felpham, Elmer and Middleton to the May training session when we were also joined by Emergency Planning Officers from Arun and West Sussex County Council.

Challenging Tabletop exercises using realistic scenarios will be held and facilitated by experienced Emergency Planners at Felpham Community Hall on Thursday August 1st and Thursday October 31st starting at 6.30p.m. All are welcome. It is a serious subject but fun to participate in the notional teams that are created at each of the exercises.

We are also able to deliver a twenty - minute presentation about local emergency planning and resilience to local groups.

The July monthly talk at Yapton Village Hall (BN18 0ET) will be held on Wednesday 10th July at 2pm. Michelle, will talk about her passion for Honeybees and beekeeping, whilst enlightening us about the art of good bee keeping and all things bee related.
