Hello and welcome to your March In Focus magazine. At the time of writing we have been having some wild weather courtesy of storms Ciara and Dennis. Hopefully Spring is on the way and we can look forward to an improvement! At least the evenings will be lighter when the clocks go forward at the end of the month.

With several Saints Days coming up over the next few weeks we have an interesting article on page 6 about how the saints came to be & how some of them became patrons. Is there a patron saint for mums? Mothers’ Day is 22nd March!

Why do we have them and how are saints chosen?

March 1st is St David's Day and March 17th is St Patrick's Day. Most of us know they are the patron saints of Wales and Ireland respectively. But why do we have saints?

Who chooses them and to what purpose?

Saints derive from the Catholic Church; they form no part of Protestant faiths. The process the Church uses to name a saint is called canonization.

Prior to the tenth century saints were chosen by public acclaim but gradually bishops and finally the Vatican took over the authority.

Canonization is a complex and lengthy process which begins after the death of a catholic regarded as particularly holy.

Mostly it starts many years after the death to allow for perspective on their life and work. Initially the local bishop investigates the candidate's life then the case is referred upwards to a panel of theologians at the Vatican. If approval is granted the pope proclaims the candidate ‘venerable.’ Beatification is the next step and requires evidence of one miracle or act of martyrdom. A miracle must have taken place after the candidate's death as a direct result of an appeal made to them. They are generally related to recovery from a deadly medical condition. For such a recovery to be declared miraculous, it must be complete, instantaneous, durable (so it can’t return) and scientifically inexplicable. If the pope bestows beatification the person may be venerated by members of the

catholic faith.

Canonization can only occur, even for martyrs, after a further miracle. The title of saint means that the person lived a holy life, is in heaven and is to be honoured by the Church. Canonization does not make someone a saint; it is simply recognition by the Pope of what he declares God has already done.

St David and St Patrick are both patron saints.

These are saints chosen as special protectors or guardians over certain areas of life. The areas can include occupations, illnesses, countries or causes. While the Pope decides whether someone can be canonized, patrons may be chosen by individuals or groups of people.

Patron saints are often chosen because an event in their lives or a talent overlaps with a particular area. For example, David, a Welsh bishop who helped to spread Christianity across the continent was born in Wales and served his country through the church. Patrick, though not born in Ireland was taken there in slavery after being kidnapped by pirates. He became fluent in Gaelic, turned to God and helped to bring Christianity to the island of Ireland. For many people saints are still relevant in the 21st century as they act like mentors, providing people with an example of a good life to follow.

A change in the season at Pagham Harbour & Medmerry March, officially the first month of spring, brings hope and a sense of anticipation as life begins anew. New growth begins in earnest and there is a feeling of excitement in the air.

Our resident male birds become more vocal looking to get ahead of the summer migrants arriving soon. Robins, dunnocks and song thrush find a suitable perch to sing, staking claim to territories and hoping to impress a potential mate. Blue tits, greenfinches and chaffinches appear brighter, having shed their old feathers and replaced them in fresh finery. It is no coincidence that dowdier birds have more complex songs than their brighter cousins. Both are ways to impress and A Blue Tit. Louise Greenhorn use considerable amounts of energy. rspb‐images.com Dunnocks feed mainly on the ground and are a regular visitor to gardens. They have streaky brown upperparts and wings, with a blue-grey chest and underparts. About the size of a blackbird, the song thrush has a brown back and wings, with small black spots all over its buff breast and flanks. Its far-carrying song comprises of a series of short phrases each repeated three or four times over.

Male greenfinches are olive-green with brighter backs and a bright yellow patch on the wing, while chaffinch males have blue-grey heads, pink chests and cheeks, a chestnut back and white patches on the wings. Like many birds the females are less colourful.

Sand martins and wheatears are the first of our summer migrants to arrive back. The earliest of our terns to return is the sandwich tern, which can often be seen near its breeding colonies in March and therefore around Church Norton. Terns are typical seabirds but much daintier than gulls, with slender wings and forked tails. The sandwich tern has black legs and a black bill with a yellow tip. It has a white body, light grey wings and a black cap which forms a crest in the breeding season. Like the sandwich terns, little ringed plovers have spent winter in Africa. These small waders with round head and short stubby bills, feed along the shoreline, especially around freshwater, running a short distance, suddenly pausing to tilt its whole body and peck at prey on the ground. They have a brown back and crown, white underparts, collar and forehead and a distinctive yellow eye-ring against a black eye mask. These are the vanguard of our summer invasion and a sure sign spring is upon us.

Fira to Oia Hike ‐ Santorini

10.5 km (6.5 Miles)

During January and February Some of you may have seen that Julia Bradbury featured in a television series which took her back to her ancestral roots in the Greek islands where she has been discovering places ‘Off the beaten track’. In one of the episodes she visited Santorini and sought out the best alternative places to see the world famous sunset. It is great to see such a programme on these cold dark winters nights and it took my mind back to an amazing hike we did last year whilst visiting Santorini. If any keen walkers should be visiting the island in the future then this trek is a must.

Santorini is part of the Cyclades islands in the southern Aegean Sea. It was devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC creating an underwater caldera (crater) and rugged landscape.

The trail we followed is one of the islands top walks and a well trodden route between the two principal towns of Fira and Oia, where some of the most magnificent views of the island and it's caldera can be seen. It will take you through the small whitewashed villages of Firostefani and Imerovigli as well as across the rocky terrain that forms the rim of the caldera high above the sea below.

The route is made up of pavement, cobbled streets and dirt tracks so good shoes are a must. We visited the island in April when it wasn’t so busy but this walk should be started early in the morning so that the midday sun is avoided, take plenty of water with you as it will take about 4 hours.

We stayed in Fira and our hotel was ideally situated directly on the route of this trail about 100m in from the start. The route starts at the Atlantic Hotel opposite the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral and first takes you through the narrow walkways of Fira with its many jewellery shops, although well signposted it’s easy to get a little lost here but any detour is well worth exploring. A walk descending the 587 steps to the Old Port for trips over to the volcano park on Nea Kameni Island is also a worth‐ while detour. There is also a cable car that carries you up and down should the steps prove to much.

Continue through the narrow streets to Firostefani, although a different village it tends to blend in to Fira, so you probably won't realise that you have walked in to the village. Stop at the much photographed Virgin Mary Orthodox Church with its whitewashed walls, iconic blue domed roof and unique three bells, with great views across the caldera.

The route heads uphill winding through the narrow streets to Imerovigli, a village at the highest point of the trek at 370m. Imerovigli has panaramic views of both towns, Fira and Oia. A detour to Skaros Rock will add approximately an hour to the trek but is definitely worth visiting the ruins of a fortress town that incredibly once consisted of 200 homes, volcanic eruptions and earth‐ quakes was the demise of this town, but a monastery known as the Chapel of Panagia Theoskepasti survived and remains in use today.

Heading out of Imerovigli the hotels become more exclusive and spread out. From here the route changes from pavements to stoney tracks that ascend a rocky hill with more terrific views of Oia. At Oia the stoney track turns into pavements and tiled walkways. The pinnacle of Oia has a ruined castle which is the end of the trek. Oia has many restored churches, handicraft and jewellery shops and the recognisable windmills that sit amongst the roof lines. However Oia is most famous for the uninterrupted sunsets over the sea. Watching the sunset here is very crowded as it is the most popular point on the island to watch the sun go down.

The bus back to Fira can be very busy with long queues, particularly after the sunset, so careful planning is key or take advantage of one of the many restaurants before returning.

This month - An annual fiesta I’ve always loved an annual. From Bunty to The Blue Peter Annual, they were crammed full of interest and fun. As I grew older my taste in annuals has become more horticultural. One little pack of seeds is now my gardening equivalent of the Beano - a brief shelf-life and packed with colour.

Hardy annuals are the most obliging. They don’t need a propagator or a greenhouse, or even a windowsill; all they need is a sunny spot and some well-drained soil. Just sprinkle the seeds in the ground and you can look forward to a fiesta of summer colour for very little work.

The choice of plants and hue is wide. If blue is your thing try a soft shade of love-in-a-mist, or a vivid blue cornflower, or the most gorgeous tiny phacelia. For pinks try a fluffy clarkia or delicate godetia.

Nasturtiums span the colour wheel from cream through yellow and orange to deep red.

Annual doesn’t mean small either. Both larkspurs and amaranthus are tall and elegant, and cleomes which also provide height probably only need to be planted once as they are prolific self-seeders!

Look around your garden for gaps in beds and borders which are in a sunny spot and well-drained. Don’t plant when it’s cold or the soil is wet and sticky. Wait until the weather is mild and soil is damp and crumbly, then fork it lightly to break it up.

Use a rake to create shallow furrows, sprinkle the seeds over and rake them gently in, raking across the furrows to cover them. Bigger seeds like nasturtiums can be pushed into the soil a couple of centimetres deep and 10-15cm apart. Label the area so you know what should come up.

love a patch of freshly raked soil, and will happily do their business in your handiwork and then kick up all your seeds without a second thought. Thwart the moggies by laying twiggy pea sticks over the area (and particularly twiggy and thorny prunings will do!). Remove them with the shoots are big enough or stand them up and use them to support the taller annuals.

Thin them out a little to one plant per 10cm and water them if the weather is very dry.

You don’t need to feed them, they flower best when the soil is not rich. Food and manure will favour leaf production whereas we’re after flowers and lots of them!

March 2020 Secure your shed or garage It’s strange how most people don’t secure their shed or garage in the same way they do their homes. People often end up using a flimsy lock or padlock to protect the contents – whether it’s a car, bike or lawnmower. The fact is, a burglar will usually try a shed or garage first because they can find the tools they need to get into the house. Please see advice below on how to protect your outbuildings:Shed and outbuilding security: first steps First off, check that your insurance covers the contents of your shed or outbuildings from theft.

Think like a thief Take a look at your shed and consider how you would break in. It’s worth having a good padlock on the door with no exposed screws. Pay attention to hinges, as these are sometimes easily removable. If you have windows then these could be vulnerable unless they’re secured with wire mesh or grills. And keep it locked at all times.

Alarm it Consider a battery-operated shed alarm. They look low key but they respond to movement or door contact with an extremely loud siren.

Lock it, hide it or mark it Don’t give them the opportunity or the tools to commit a crime. Lock everything away securely. Tools can be locked inside a locker or box or secured with a chain.

Secure your bike to the ground or a lockable stand within a locked shed or garage. Visit https://www.soldsecure.com/ to search for ground anchors and other locks designed to fix to floors and walls.

Can you find the hidden phrases? Although it might sound like stating the obvious, never leave your garage or shed door unlocked if you’re not around.
