Hello, April already, hopefully some better weather is on the way and with it an end to the coronavirus that is occupying everyone at the moment. I hope you have not been affected & are keeping healthy. At the time of writing things seem to be changing quickly so it is a good idea to be prepared and the best advice at the moment seems to be to wash your hands thoroughly and frequently with soap.

Easter is nearly here, I am sure I am not alone in looking forward to the Bank Holidays. If you need some ideas for activities over Easter then have a look at the RSPB article on page 8 as they have several family events planned. You can also read about lots of other activities in our community pages.

The history of the public loo

We take public toilets for granted today yet for the majority of British history they didn't exist!

The first public flushing toilet was invented and created by a plumber named George Jennings, and showcased at the Great Exhibition in 1851. People were enthralled by this amazing contraption and it proved so popular that the first public loos, called 'Public Waiting Rooms' were opened the following year. There was a huge public desire for better sanitation to prevent the spread of diseases like cholera.

In Victorian Britain, the first public toilets were designed for men only. No-one gave much thought to women. For the most part women were considered to be their husband's property, and their place was in the home. Although many working-class women did work outside the home, most middle-class women did not, and neither were they expected to travel much. If they did want or need to travel, women from polite society had to plan their route carefully to include areas where they could relieve themselves. This meant that for the most part women travelled only to see family and friends, within the distance their bladders allowed.

The fledgling feminist movement felt keenly that a lack of access to toilets was a barrier to women accessing public spaces. This led to the formation of the Ladies Sanitary Association, which campaigned from the 1850s onwards, fairly successfully, and

succeeded in getting more public toilets built for females, though the numbers fell far short of those required. Other campaigns for more female toilets were opposed vehemently by men, who either did not want the facilities located in the same place as their own toilets or didn't want them anywhere where they might be visible to men. Society was coyer in the 19th Century and bodily functions, particularly female bodily functions were considered taboo. There were even cases of female public toilets being sabotaged by men!

The First World War saw women entering the work force in huge numbers for the first time, as they entered munition factories to help with the war effort. These factories were traditionally dominated by males so had very little in the way of female facilities.

But now women had the numbers to begin to campaign for female changing rooms and toilets. Many employers resisted though and there was nothing in law at the time to force their hand because there were only limited protections for workers of either sex.

It actually took until 1992 before legislation was passed to dictate that men and women in a workplace must have separate toilet facilities where possible: "Employers should arrange for separate facilities for men and women. If this isn’t possible, toilets and washing facilities must have locks. These ensure privacy and security.� (The Health and Safety Executive (HSE)) So next time you spend a penny at the train station or shopping centre, spare a thought for your poor ancestors whose only options were to cross their legs and think dry thoughts!

When did you last hear a cuckoo?

I remember as a child growing up, hearing the cuckoos call emanating around my hometown. Sadly, this is now just a memory for me and many of my generation.

Like much of our birds and other wildlife, it has declined rapidly and now this most symbolic of calls has been lost widely across the country. What is more frightening is that it’s likely, that there are now more people in the UK that have never heard a cuckoo before, than those that have. However, you can still hear, and see, these celebrated birds around our beautiful reserves of RSPB Pagham Harbour and RSPB Medmerry each spring. Repeating their name over and over, seeming near, then far, the very sound lifts the soul as they herald in the spring.

Cuckoo ‐ Ben Andrews Often when we talk about spring and summer migrants, we automatically think of rspb‐images.com warblers, larks and other celebrated songbirds, that fill the air with their vocalisations, or swallows, martins and swifts, that wheel high above against blue skies. However, there are many others that arrive or pass through our reserves at this time of year. One of these, is one of my favourite waders, the common sandpiper. This neat little wader, with grey-brown upperparts and breast, has white underparts that lead up in front of the wing as a distinctive white shoulder. Although nondescript in appearance, it has an endearing habit of bobbing up and down on its short green legs known as ‘teetering’. Look out for them around pools or channels where they can be seen feeding at the edges.

The UK also has one summer migrant duck, the garganey. The male has a brown head with broad white stripes over its eyes that curve down and meet at the back of the neck. It has a mottled brown breast, barred grey flanks and drooping black and white feathers on its back. The female looks like a female mallard but with a white throat patch. Situated on the Manhood Peninsula, our reserves of Pagham Harbour & Medmerry are migration hotspots on this stretch of the south coast.

A tasty Indonesian classic Preparation time: 40 mins Cooking time: 2 and a half hours Serves: 6+ Ingredients 3 tbsp vegetable oil 2kg beef shin or skirt, cut into bite-sized chunks 2 lemongrass stalks, bruised 2 x 400ml cans coconut milk 4 tbsp unsweetened desiccated coconut 2 kaffir lime leaves, torn 1 Beef stock cube 2 tbsp tamarind paste 1 tsp sugar ¼ tsp salt For the paste 1/2 - 3 chillies chopped (depending on taste) 6-8 baby shallots 2 inch / 5cm piece ginger, chopped three cloves garlic Method For the paste, place all paste ingredients

into a small food processor and blitz until smooth.

Heat the oil in a heavy-based flameproof casserole dish or large saucepan. Fry the paste for 5-10 minutes until golden. Add the beef chunks and the lemongrass and mix well. Once the beef has coloured, add the coconut milk plus 250ml water. Bring to the boil, then lower to a very low simmer, uncovered for 2 hours. Stir occasionally to prevent the rendang sticking, and more often towards the end.

Towards the end of the cooking time toast the coconut in a frying pan on a low heat for 5-7 mins until golden brown. Set aside to cool. Using a blender, coarsely blend it to finer pieces – but not too fine. Put to one side.

After 2 hrs, add the coconut, kaffir lime leaves, stock cube, tamarind paste, sugar and salt to the pan. Stir well and simmer for 30 minutes. The meat should be tender and falling apart when touched.

Serve with rice and green salad.

Chichester Cathedral Festival of Flowers Make sure you don’t miss out on booking a ticket for the Chichester Cathedral Festival of Flowers – a spectacular floral celebration which is held every other year.

The three day Festival runs from 28th – 30th May, and the theme is 'Realms of Glory'. Over 80 stunning arrangements are produced by volunteer flower arrangers using in excess of 50,000 flowers. More than 570 volunteers are involved, including Flower Arrangers, Community Groups and individuals across the Diocese of Chichester working together providing flower arrangements, visitor information, refreshments and more.

As well as the flower arrangements in the Cathedral and environs, visitors can stroll through the cloisters and Cathedral grounds and visit the Festival Market. There will also be a flower sale, live music, and delicious refreshments in Café des Fleurs. Internationally renowned sculptor Philip Jackson will be exhibiting his work.

All proceeds go to the work of the Cathedral Restoration & Development Trust.

By Katherine Gillespie Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency - Douglas Adams When Douglas Adams' novel was adapted for television, purists complained that the version shown bore little resemblance to the original. That may be true, but it is perfectly possible to enjoy both.

The 'detective' element in the title is not entirely misleading - there is a detective story here, albeit one that doesn't follow any of the usual patterns of the genre. As might be expected, Adams interweaves humour, science fiction and a strong sense of the absurd, along with characters who are essentially believable and sympathetic, creating a novel which is much more than the sum of its parts.

The plot is almost impossible to summarise. There is a horse stuck in the bathroom of a Cambridge college for a start. An Electric Monk is on the loose. And Samuel Taylor Coleridge is particularly important.

Early in the story, electronics entrepreneur Gordon Way, finds himself unexpectedly murdered and refuses to accept that death is indeed the end. His employee Richard MacDuff, soon finds that the sofa stuck halfway up the staircase to his flat is the least of his problems - not least when his old university acquaintance Dirk Gently, telephones him unexpectedly as he is in the middle of breaking into his girlfriend's flat...

What follows is often complex, mostly impossible, but always funny. If nothing else, it will make you think about time in a completely different way.

The equinox is the instant of time during a year when the plane of Earth's equator passes through the centre of the Sun. This occurs twice annually. In the springtime this is around (but not exactly on) 20th March. Full moons occur every 29.5 days so between those two events there is quite a lot of leeway when it comes to dates, but Easter is always somewhere between March 22nd and April 25th. So now you can say with confidence that Easter is early…or late…or possibly right where it should be.

Easter never seems to come on time! In fact, it’s a different time every year. Why is that? We don’t move Christmas or New Year’s Day so what makes Easter so flexible?

This year Easter Sunday falls on April 12th. I suspect that for once it’s actually on time though frankly who knows?

The reason for Easter being something of a moveable (chocolate) feast is because it is celebrated on the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, which is the first full moon after the spring

What does Easter mean to you? Eggs? Shopping? Time off work? For many people it is a time of religious significance? However what about the tradition of the Easter greetings card? Many people think this is a new innovation, along with all the other types of cards increasingly flooding the market.

However you would be wrong. The postcard style of cards became available at the end of the 1900’s. The market was being flooded from the Continent, but mainly from Germany, as they began to excel in the embossing processes utilised for many of these cards.

It is difficult for us today to realise that at the start of the 20th century the collecting of postcards was a universal craze and was reported as ‘raging like a forest fire’ by the start of the first World War. In the late 1970s William Duval (Author of Collecting Postcards 1894 – 1914) likened homes, at the turn of the century, without a postcard album to view as being as incomplete as those without a television set.

It was a regular occurrence for families and children to send quantities of cards each Easter, with a variety of messages, one such was sent in 1941 and remarked, “just a postcard to wish you a happy Easter. We broke up at school on Wednesday for the Easter holidays.

Well I must go to bed now.” A number of the cards shown here were sent in a period from 1914 to 1918, and like millions of others were collected in an album to be cherished for years to come.

This month - container-grown fruit April is the perfect month for planting container-grown fruit trees and bushes.

Even if your garden space is limited you can still grow fruit trees and bushes. You can even grow them in containers on a balcony.

The trick is to read the label. Look for dwarf varieties that won’t grow too large for your pot or garden. It’s a good idea to buy selffertile plants too, especially if you don’t live in an area where lots of people grow their own fruit.

Even on a small plot buy the biggest pot you can fit into the available space. Bigger pots hold more compost, so they contain more food, more water and more space for strong root growth. Make sure the pot has drainage holes and cover the base with drainage material. Handy hint – if wind is a problem on your site use heavy material like broken crockery or stones to add weight, whereas if you will need to be able to move the pot easily use polystyrene chunks, which are very lightweight.

Fill the container with a loam-based potting compost. Remove the tree or shrub from its original pot, spread the roots a little and plant it in the new container to the same depth. Water the compost well initially and then whenever the surface is dry.

If you want to plant your fruit tree in the garden dig a hole as deep as the root system, and about three times the width.

Place the plant into the hole and refill it.

Then firming the soil with your foot. If the tree is in an exposed area you might need to stake it.

Fruit is very easy to grow, and there are a huge variety of fruit trees or bushes to suit every garden size and aspect, so you’re bound to find the perfect plant for your space.

Try: Dwarf apple trees, which provide interest all year round as well as fruit in the autumn.

Any of the currants. Blackcurrants are particularly nice. They are low maintenance and great in jams and pies. They like a sunny spot and plenty of water Raspberries are lovely. They fruit in summer and like a sheltered sunny spot.

You buy raspberry canes rather than bushes. Look for a thorn-free variety.

Blueberries grow really well and are great for growing in a container because they like acid soil and in a container, this is easy to provide. Look for ericaceous compost which you should keep moist because like most soft fruits they are quite thirsty plants.

Collect rainwater for the purpose as blueberries are not keen on tap water.

I grow strawberries in large hanging baskets to make the most of the space.

They are easy to grow this way but make sure you keep them well fed with a high potash fertiliser as nutrients leach away from hanging baskets very easily.

I protect all my container-grown soft fruit with netting as my garden birds tend to view my patio display as a rolling all-season buffet laid on especially for their benefit.
