Brooks and his Portrush caddie on top of the world!

It’s another month and another major to talk about. The new schedule means they just flow one after another - April to July.

Last month we talked about Tiger and the greatest comeback in modern day sport. We had a great debate on this and focused on Tiger verses Ben Hogan and our social media platforms went into overdrive with comments. I make no apology for going back to this story to suggest we all forgot about one sportsman who truly deserves the title as “Greatest comeback in sport”. The late great Nikki Lauda overcame horrific injuries in 1976 to get back in his F1 car 40 days later and eventually went on to win 2 more World titles. Sport lost a true legend last month with the passing of Nikki.

Now we must start to ask the question… is Brooks Koepka really special? Will he go on and win more majors? And will our own Ricky Elliot from Portrush who caddies for him become as famous as Steve Williams when he was New Zealand’s richest sportsman while caddying for Tiger?

I think it is fair to say 4 majors in 8 is unbelievable but the USPGA and US Opens are set up for the gigantic hitters of the game these days and there are not many

who can hit drives 340 yards to get past trouble and gain a huge advantage. That’s not to take away from a huge achievement in winning back to back majors again.

We move on to Pebble Beach which is actually one of the shorter venues and scene of the incredible win by GMac in 2010.

Graeme who finished a creditable 29th at Bethpage Black said Pebble would feel like a pitch and putt course by comparison.

And after the US Open then we will know who the 3 major Champions will be coming to the 4th and last major of the year at Royal Portrush Golf Club. Will Tiger and Brooks have a 3rd member of that achievement or will one of them win a 2nd major?

Talking of winners, it is just magnificent to see Leona Maguire flourish on the professional golf scene with a 2nd win on the Symetra Ladies Tour in USA. One more win and she gets full playing rights on the LPGA Tour and might be a good bet for a wild card for the Solheim Cup at Gleneagles.

As the 148th arrives on the north shore of Northern Ireland next month, Tee to Green look back on the famous Irish winners and the last time that the Open was held at the famous links at Royal Portrush. For such a small island, Ireland has over-achieved in the world of golf in the past 10 years with Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke, Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell all winning majors.

We start our Open roundup over 70 years ago at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake with Portrush’s own Fred Daly. Fred was born in Causeway Street, Portrush in 1911 and became Ireland’s first major winner by winning the 1947 Open. After shooting scores of 74, 70, 78 on the first 3 rounds, Daly needed to hole a 10 foot putt on the 18th to beat American amateur Frank Stranagan by a single shot and thereby immortalising himself in golf history.

It was 60 years before another Irishman would win the Open. This time Padraig Harrington was the victor. He beat Sergio Garcia by 1 shot, in the playoff at Carnoustie after they both finished -7 in the 72 holes of regulation play. Harrington would go on the retain his title one year later at Birkdale when he spectacularly eagled the par 5, 17th hole to eventually win by 4 shots from Ian Poulter. He was the 1st European golfer to retain their major since James Braid in 1911.

CAN RORY DO IT? In 2014, Rory McIlroy beat Ricky Fowler and Sergio Garcia by 2 strokes at Royal Liverpool to become the latest Irish winner. In doing so he became only the 2nd player in history to win both a silver medal (for best amateur) and a gold medal (for the winner). He also became the only European since the Masters started to win 3 majors before the age of 30.

It would be remiss of us not to mention Max Faulkner the winner at Royal Portrush in 1951. He holds the record as the only golfer to win the Open outside England or Scotland. He beat Antonio Cerda by 2 shots and won the sum of £300.00. It would be another 18 years before another British or Irish player would win the Open.

At the 2011 Open at Royal St Georges nobody thought that Darren Clarke would finally reach the pinnacle of the sport and win an Open. On very windy and difficult conditions in the final round, he held off Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson to win his Open on his 20th attempt. Since the inception of the Masters this was the first time any country other than USA had won consecutive majors after Rory McIlroy won the 2011 US Open at Congressional.

He deserves all the credit and attention now as a 4th major in the last 8 propels him to comparisons with Tiger Woods and the other legends of the game.

The week before the USPGA Championship at Bethpage Black, Long Island, Koepka was making the news, believing he was not respected enough for his achievements of 3 majors in the last two years. These including back to back US Opens and the USPGA Championship at the 100th anniversary event last year at Bellerive Golf Course.

We consider a little bit of Brooks as “one of our own” as he cut his professional teeth on the European Tour and of course his caddie is Portrush native Ricky Elliot who has been with him throughout his journey to become the No 1 ranked golfer in the World.

Brooks has 7 professional tournament wins and 4 majors against DJ Johnson who has an amazing 20 USPGA wins but only 1 major. Ask anybody professional golfer which record they would want, and the vast majority will say “give me the majors”.

DID DJ BOTTLE IT? On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Brooks looked to be playing a different golf course to everyone else. Bethpage Black is over 7,500 yards long and renowned as being the hardest of the major venues but Brooks was making it look so easy with a 7 shot lead at -12 after 3 rounds but golf isn’t always as easy to win as you think and a wobble at the start of the back nine on Sunday and a surging DJ, roared on by an unfair partisan crowd reduced his lead to 1 shot after 14 holes.

The money would have been on DJ to push ahead in his last 3 holes as Brooks looked as though he was in trouble finding any par down the home stretch. In the end, all the questions about bottle are being asked of the former world No 1 Dustin who failed to hit a single good shot from 16th tee to the end and a recomposed Brooks ended up winning by 2 to record back to back PGA Championships.

It seemed astonishing that Koepka’s successful defence was ever in doubt but he was in grave danger of the worst ever capitulations in major golf history with that run of four bogies in a row from the 11th but his caddie Elliot proved invaluable as he steadied his player and Koepka finished off the tournament with some quality shots under huge pressure.

That’s 4 majors in 23 months and all before Brooks in 30 years of age. Surely, he can now make a run at the leaderboard of major wins and join some of the more illustrious legends of the game.

ALL EYES ON PEBBLE BEACH It was a respectable tournament for the Irish, on top of Ricky claiming his 4th major as a caddie, Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry finished in joint 8th place and Graeme McDowell a commendable 29th place. This was no course to be giving up an average 40 yards off the Tee but that’s what GMac had to contend with as his average drives of 289 yards were passed by practically the entire field leaving him with a huge disadvantage. Gmac will be quietly confident of the weeks ahead when he heads back to Pebble Beach the scene of his incredible win at the US Open in 2010 and hopefully a place in The 148th Open next month in his home town Portrush.

With the new schedule of majors coming along quickly from April to July there is no time to dwell on this latest success by Brooks as all eyes turn to Pebble Beach.

1/ The first US Open was played over 36 holes (all in one day) at Newport Golf and Country Club in Rhode Island in 1895.

Newport was a 9-hole course. Only 14 players entered with only 10 finishing all 36 holes. The eventual winner was Horace Rawlins.

This iconic Californian venue has previously hosted the Championship on five occasions, the most recent being in 2010 when Ulsterman Graeme McDowell emerged victorious. The course is familiar to many of us as it hosts the annual AT&T Pro-Am on the PGA Tour each February. It will however play significantly harder in June as ground conditions will be much firmer.

Major Champions Brooks Koepka - The defending champion, who won the Championship at Erin Hills in 2017. If he was to win he would become only the second player after Willie Anderson (1903-1905) to win in three consecutive years.

Pebble Beach has seen Nicklaus, Watson and Woods triumph in a US Open it would be appropriate if Koepka could join them in the winners’ circle.

Dustin Johnson - The big hitting American has previously won the AT&T event twice at Pebble Beach. He famously shot 82 in the last round in 2010 after holding the 54 hole lead. Johnson once again demonstrated at the recent USPGA Championship that he is fragile under pressure. For this reason I do not feel he will win the title.

Jordan Speith - Returned to form at Bethpage to show that he is nearly back to his best. He won the title in 2015 at Chambers Bay. This will be the sort of test that will require a great deal of mental fortitude and for this reason he has to be highly fancied. Write him off at your peril.

Phil Mickelson - Winner of the 2019 AT&T at Pebble Beach. Mickelson had a chance to win here in 2010 but finished in a tie for fourth with Tiger Woods. He only needs this Championship to complete the career Grand Slam but has finished runner up on an unprecedented six occasions. I think like McIlroy, at the Masters, the prospect of

Rory McIlroy - Rory missed the cut at the 2010 US Open but was then successful the following year at Congressional. I don’t think this course plays to his strengths as in June it will traditionally play short and bouncy.

He has won his four previous majors on long wet golf courses. Rory last won a major in 2014 and I feel the weight of expectation is hindering his recent performances in them.

Louis Oosthuizen - The runner up in 2015 is a former Open Champion (2010). He is now coached by Ulsterman Justin Parsons who is based at Sea Island, Georgia. An underrated performer at the majors, means he is great value at 66-1. If the putter behaves itself he can definitely be in the mix late on Sunday.

Potential Major Winners Patrick Cantlay - Two top ten’s in the first two major championships of 2019 illustrate his ability to compete at the highest level. He was 239th in the World Rankings two years ago and is now placed in the top twenty. I think he represents brilliant value for money at 33-1.

Xander Schauffele - Six top twenty performances from the last nine major championships. He is a player for the big occasion as victories at the 2018 HSBC and the 2019 Tournament of Champions illustrate. His tie for second at the US Masters will have given him the belief that he can close out a major. I expect him to go close in conditions he should be very familiar with Pebble Beach as he is a native Californian.

Tommy Fleetwood - The runner up to Brooks Koepka last year at Shinnecock Hills. Fleetwood hasn’t putted as well this year which has led to a slide in the World Rankings. He has the perfect game for this championship but he will not win a major if he can’t depend on the flat stick.

Tiger Woods - He demolished the field here in the 2000 US Open on his way to the “Tiger Slam”. His recent victory in the Masters will have done wonders for his confidence. The Masters demonstrated that his iron play is still up there with the best and this could help him to a fourth US Open title.

Webb Simpson - The 2012 Champion at nearby Olympic Club in San Francisco. Winner of the 2018 Players Championship, Simpson has overcome putting problems to become one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour. He is a great each way bet at odds

completing the grand slam will prove too much of a distraction.

Ian Poulter - At the beginning of 2017, Poulter was 202nd in the World Rankings and struggling to protect his exempt status on the PGA Tour. The subsequent resurgence in his career can only be admired as he now sits comfortably in the World’s top 50.

Played with Koepka in the third round last year before fading to finish 25th. Available at odds of 100-1, he has got to be worth an each way bet.

2/ The oldest winner of the US Open is Hale Irwin. When he won the 1990 US Open, he was 45 years, 15 days old.

Johnny McDermott is the youngest winner. When he won in 1911, he was only 19 years, 9 months and 14 days old.

3/ The lowest total in the Championship is held by Rory McIlroy, who in 2011 at Congressional shot 268 for a -16 total.

All four rounds were in the 60’s and he became only the fifth player in history to be under par for all four rounds.

4/ The first golfer to break 30 for nine holes is Neal Lancaster. In 1995 he shot 29 for the back nine holes at Shinnecock Hills. Amazingly, he also became the second player to achieve this feat when one year later he shot the same score at Oakland Hills.

5/ Four players have won the US Open on four occasions. They are Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus. Tiger Woods will join this group if he can win it this year.

6/ The youngest golfer to win since the second World War is Jordan Spieth at 21 years, 10 months and 25 days.

Outsiders Matt Fitzpatrick - With Billy Foster as his new caddie, Fitzpatrick has enjoyed a solid 2019 highlighted by a second placed finish at Bay Hill. He won the US Amateur in 2013 at Brookline another US Open venue. Should have finished higher than 12th last year when in contention on the last day. He is only twenty four but has five European Tour wins to his name.

Lee Westwood - In 1992 after 19 top ten finishes in major championships Tom Kite won the US Open at Pebble Beach.

He was over forty years of age and most commentators thought he was well past his best. Lee Westwood has enjoyed 18 top ten finishes in major championships in his career.

He may be an outsider to win but like Kite no one would deny him a major this late in his career. Victory at the Nedbank last November showed he can still has what it takes!

In 1996, the company hired Roger Cleveland (the same person whose name is on the leading wedges today) as chief club designer and in 2002 the forged wedges constructed from carbon steel with modified U-groove faces was launched.

Golf goes way back in time…500 years or more. For decades golfers used hickory golf clubs with iron heads.

When we think of modern-day golf equipment, we immediately think of Callaway Golf because they are one of the world’s leading brands, but did you realise there is a link between hickory golf clubs and Callaway Golf. Callaway Golf Company started out life as ‘Hickory Sticks’ making traditional hickory shafted irons.

They further acquired Odyssey Sports in 1997 and expanded their line of putters. 1996 was a huge year for the company. David Leadbetter joined the ranks as part of the teaching staff and Annika Sorenstam started to dominate lady’s golf with a 2nd win in the USA Open while playing Callaway Golf clubs and wearing Callaway golf shoes and in 2005 Callaway finally won a men’s major when Phil Mickelson won the USPGA Championship followed

by The Masters the following year.

By now the company was trading on the New York Stock Exchange, trading under the symbol ELY with a market capitalisation of $250m and made further acquisitions. OGIO, a US based bag and apparel brand, Travis Mathews, a California based lifestyle and golf apparel brand and Jack Wolfskin a German outdoor apparel brand were all purchased.

THE NAME OF THE GAME! Callaway Golf Company was founded by former Burlington Industries textile president, Ely Callaway Jnr. He had previously been successful in the textile and wine industries and was an avid golfer. He was particularly keen on hickory clubs and used ‘Hickory Sticks’ product.

When they started to run out of money, they looked for an investor and in 1982 Ely Callaway bought a 50% share of ‘Hickory Sticks’ and renamed it ‘Callaway Hickory Stick USA’. In 1983, Ely became the company’s president and moved their headquarters to Carlsbad, California where he was frequently found selling clubs out of the back of his Cadillac.

It has been a long road from selling hickory clubs from the back of the car but equally it was only 37 years since golf was revolutionised by large sized metal woods, led by Mr Ely Callaway.

In 1984, Callaway bought the rest of the company for another $400,000 and in 1988 changed its name by dropping reference to Hickory. It was at that time that the Ely brought in a team of designers under the leadership of Richard C. Helmstetter, who introduced computer-controlled manufacturing machines. The first notable outcome from this was huge. The development of the BIG BERTA driver in 1986, using large volume 190cc steel club head and the revolution of club technology changed for ever.

In 2005, I had the privilege to go to Carlsbad and meet with senior management at Callaway Golf and it remains a memorable day in my career getting a tour round the modern-day facility.

In an extraordinary year for golf in Ireland, a brand new tournament, the ISPS HANDA World Invitational Men | Women, presented by Modest! Golf Management, will take place at Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort and Massereene Golf Club from August 15-18, 2019.

The event formerly known as the NI Open, the most successful and best attended event on the European Challenge Tour, has been transformed into a new global event for men and women professionals. This progressive move was made possible when ISPS HANDA and long-time supporters of the NI Open, Modest!

Stephen Watson, BBC Sports presenter talking to Editor Grahame Jenkins We bring you the interview here: Editor: Which golf clubs are you a member of and how often do you play?

Stephen: I am a 5 day member at Shandon Park, a member of Royal Portrush and a member at Lough Erne.

I play off a handicap of 12 but due to my illness and the time required to go on dialysis every week at the moment I don’t have time to play.

Editor: Which is your favourite course in Ireland and your favourite course outside Ireland?

Stephen: I forgot I am also a country member of my favourite course in Ireland, Ballycastle. I just love it. It brings back great memories of my summer times as a child and I consider the course and members to be brilliant.

The best international golf course I have played is Stone Canyon in Tuscan Arizona, USA. It is now owned by Phil Mickelson and is unbelievable. You wonder how they can build such an incredible course in the middle of the nowhere. Every hole is cut out of the desert and there isn’t a bad hole on it.

Editor: You mention your illness. It is well known locally that you had a live kidney transplant 30 years ago, and you need now need a new one. How is that going?

Editor: I thought you were going to say Augusta because I heard that you played it the 1st year you covered the Masters’ when you were selected from the media draw to play on the Monday. Is that true?

Stephen: Yes, I need a new kidney. I always knew I would need a new one at some point and the time has come. I need to go to dialysis 4 days a week with a 5 hour stint on the machine each time.

I go to Belfast City hospital and the staff are truly great and I am so lucky because they are world leaders in transplantation.

They also help me set up dialysis when I need to travel for work. Recently, I have had sessions booked when I have been in USA for The Masters, in the Isle of Man for the TT races and in Scotland for last summer’s Open.

Stephen: Yes, my 1st Masters was 2009, Rory’s first time. So, BBC wanted me to go over to Augusta and cover the event.

Someone had to, ha-ha. I think I have 10 or 11 Masters behind me now and yes, I was selected from the media draw in my first year. I didn’t have golf clubs with me and while Graeme and Rory wanted to lend me their clubs that really would not have worked with their stiff shafts. So, I went to a local golf store and purchased a full set of clubs, bag the lot. I remember telling the store assistant that I was playing Augusta on

the Monday morning and he just looked at me with amazement. He couldn’t believe that someone playing the most iconic golf course in America would do so with a brand new set of clubs.

However, that was nothing compared to the caddie who saw that the labels on the irons had still not been taken off.

Editor: How did you play?

Stephen: I played ok. I three and four putted a lot and got my 1st par of the day at the 9th. I played Amen Corner with a par on 11th, had an 8 on 12 and 3 putted for par on 13th.

Editor: What are you most looking forward to most at Royal Portrush this year?

Stephen: Watching Rory pick up the Claret Jug at Portrush would be amazing - Any Irishman winning would be amazing. I really hope GMac finds a way into the event. I also think we will see Darren Clarke feature on the leader board at some point during the week.

Editor: You have closely followed Rory throughout his career and he clearly gives the BBC great coverage and access. What is it like to follow and interview him?

Stephen: I have known Rory, and his family, since he was 12 or 13 - when you knew he was going to be something special. A fantastic young man and a joy to work with.

Editor: Let’s come back to your health. Tee to Green are delighted to try and help you to get the story out there, so what would you like to say to live donors?

Stephen: Right now, my health is very good, but I need regular dialysis and it’s not going to get any better. I am on both the live donor list and the deceased donor list. I hope they find a suitable match for me and would just ask people to think about it. It’s not for everyone to donate a kidney or even go on the deceased register. Think about it and come to your own conclusion.

Victoria Bradshaw is one of the class of 2019 who recently graduated as a PGA Professional. She has been coaching at Belvoir Park Golf Club for the last few years but her impressive coaching credentials, which includes her position as Ulster Regional Coach, are almost eclipsed by her performance on the course.

She has represented Ireland at Junior and Senior level, was a past Ulster Champion and part of the Royal Portrush Ladies 2013 All Ireland Senior Cup winning Team.

Victoria’s passion for the game translates into the results she is enjoying in her own game and the improvements her students make; particularly with the Elite girls. Having been in their shoes she is able to help them develop strategies to improve their performance and to develop team spirit, which is so important at Elite level. For the amateur golfer today, Victoria believes that golf is in a great place because there are so many different ways to play and opportunities to learn.

Having won the Ulster Ladies Championship in 2009 at Royal Portrush where she was also a member, Victoria returns this summer as part of the Team of PGA Professionals who will run the SwingZone at the 148th Open Golf Championship.

She also believes that bringing the Open to Ireland will have a massive impact on participation and create interest in the game as she explains,

“I have never done anything like this before and am really excited to bring the fun factor to the SwingZone. I want to educate people about the way they play and help them understand that simple changes can make a longlasting improvement to their game.”

“I cannot wait to see Tiger and Rory on the course! The home crowd here will be unlike anything the Open has seen before. We really get behind people and the atmosphere will be electric. This is a great year for golf in Ireland and we are ready to welcome even more people into the game.”

Maguire steps into the winner’s circle for the second time this season, The Volvik Race for the Card welcomes a fresh top-10 following the seventh tournament of the 2019 Symetra Tour campaign, including a switch at the top with Leona Maguire (County Cavan, Ireland) taking over No. 1 position following her Symetra Classic victory.

“It’s nice to play well, but it’s nice to win when you play well,” said Maguire, who has five straight top-five finishes. “Last week I felt like I didn’t do really anything wrong on the last day, but got beat by some pretty incredible golf. It was a great turnaround this week to come out again guns blazing, keep my foot down and not mess around with any playoff. Nice to get some momentum early in the season and it helps me with planning.”

McDermott’s birdie barrage gets the job done at Edmondstown Pro-Am Michael holds off Simon Thornton Michael McDermott (pictured right) produced a birdie-barrage to win the recent Edmondstown Pro-Am. The Grange GC professional’s six under par round of 65 earned him a twoshot margin of victory over Simon Thornton (Tulfarris Golf Resort).

Damien McGrane (Carlow GC), Steven Quinlan (SQ Golf ) and Joe Dillon (Headfort GC) finished tied for third on one under par.

The event was part of the club’s 75th anniversary celebrations and 43 professionals were joined by 129 amateurs to help mark the occasion.

With a shot-gun start in operation, Michael began his round at the par five fourth with a birdie that set the tone for the rest of his round. He followed up with birdies at the fifth, seventh, eighth, 10th, 12th, 15th, 16th and the first as he took a decisive grip on the event. The 38-year-old also collected three bogeys at the 11th, 17th and ninth but the damage wasn’t enough to knock him off course.

Thornton and amateur partners John Staunton, Colm O’Carroll and Jim Robertson claimed the team award with 87pts, edging out Joe Dillon’s team by virtue of a better back nine.

On to Dromoland Castle

The next event on the schedule is the PGA Irish Club Pro-Am at Dromoland Castle on May 21st followed by the PGA Irish Club Professional tournament at the same venue on May 22nd.

STATEMENT FROM THE CONFEDERATION OF GOLF IN IRELAND Following Rory McIlroy’s comments at the USPGA Championship press conference on 14th May 2019 where he responded to a media query about the Olympics, the Confederation of Golf in Ireland (CGI) has issued this statement:

Reigning Australian Amateur champion Conor Purcell, Portmarnock Golf Club, was the highest placed Irishman at the recent Flogas Irish Amateur Open staged at Co.Sligo GC. Purcell finished in second place with a four round total of four under par 280.

He was five shots behind eventual winner James Newton from England who claimed his first major title with a highly impressive aggregate of nine under par 275.

Neil Manchip, the CGI nominee for men’s golf Team Leader at the Tokyo Olympics said: “We are delighted that Rory has signalled his intention to compete for Ireland at the Olympics in Tokyo next year. We’ve had several conversations over the last couple of months and I know he’s excited about playing. Having a multiple major winner as part of Team Ireland will undoubtedly be a boost to the entire team making the trip next year.”

The qualifying process for the Olympics* runs 1st July 2018 up to 22nd June 2020.

Send your thoughts to info@teetogreen.eu On the 2/6/1901 Benjamin Adams, a lawyer from Yonkers, New York and a member of the Board of Education was arrested for playing golf at Saegkill Golf Club on a Sunday. Five days later in court it was decided that golfers had the right to play golf on a Sunday and Mr Adams was released with no charge.

On 2/6/1927 The first gathering of the US and British Ryder Cup teams at Worchester Biltmore Country Club took place. This was followed by a night golf contest under floodlights. On the 3/6/1927 the first Ryder Cup matches took place. The British team was captained by Ted Ray and the US team’s captain was Walter Hagen. The US team was victorious 9.5 - 2.5.

On 28/6/1949 Arnold Palmer won the National Collegiate Tournament. Palmer was still only a sophomore at Wake Forest University when he shot 70-71 to beat Purdue’s Fred Wampler by one shot.

On 17/6/1962 Jack Nicklaus beat Arnold Palmer at Oakmount Country Club in an eighteen hole playoff to win the 1962 US Open. The win was Nicklaus’ first professional win and started the great rivalry between himself and Palmer.

On 16/6/1968 Lee Trevino became the first player to play all four rounds in a US Open in under par. At Oakhill Country Club Trevino shot 69, 69, 68, 69 for a total of 5 under par and won his first major by four shots from Jack Nicklaus.

On 20/8/1999 Payne Stewart won the US Open at Pinehurst no 2. It was his second US open and his third major title.

However, he was unable to defend his title because just four months later he died in a plane crash.

On 2/6/1930 Headfort Golf Club was officially opened. In 1930 the course was only 9 holes but now it has 36 holes.

In June 1931 Enid Wilson, from England, won her first of three consecutive British Ladies Championships at Portmarnock Golf Club. She beat Wanda Wilson 7/6 in the final.

On 13/6/1932 Gene Sarazen kept his new ‘sand wedge’ hidden in fear that the R&A would ban it from being used in the Open. This was the first ‘sand wedge’ and Sarazen is credited for inventing it. He went on to win the 1932 Open and the sand wedge he used is now displayed in the USGA Museum in New Jersey.

On 12/6/1947 ‘Babe’ Didrikson became the first American to win the Ladies British Amateur when she beat Jacqueline Gordon 5/4 at Gullane in Scotland. Didrikson won four majors as an amateur before turning professional in 1948.

On 26/6/1949 Ballyliffin Golf Club played their first ever competitive match when they travelled to their Donegal neighbours, Greencastle Golf Club. They

Jamie Anderson was born 27/6/1842

Anderson was one of the original ‘greats’ of early golf. He is one of the few players who have won three consecutive Open Championships. He was a son of a ‘Old Course’ greenkeeper. He died in 1905 in a poorhouse in Scotland.

Jock Hutchison was born 6/6/1884

Hutchison won the PGA in 1920 and the following year he won his only Open at St Andrews. He defeated Roger Wethered by nine shots in a 36 hole play-off.

Babe Didrikson Zaharias was born 26/6/1911

Zaharias is widely regarded as the greatest female athlete of all time.

Along with winning ten majors in golf, stshe won two gold medals in track and field during the 1932 Olympic Games and was an All-American baseball and basketball player.

Charlie Sifford was born 2/6/1922

Sifford was the first African American to play on the US tour and won the 1975 Senior PGA. For his contribution to golf he was inducted into the Golf Hall of Fame in 2004, received the Old Tom Morris Award in 2007 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014.

Phil Mickelson was born 16/6/1970

Mickelson has won five major championships and next month will be attempting to win a US Open to complete a career Grand Slam. On six occasions he has finished runner-up in the US Open.

Two and a half years ago Peter Hanna was in his shop at Lurgan Golf Club issuing cards to the members on a Saturday morning when a surprise phone call came through from Sandy Jones, the Chief Executive for the PGA. Mr Jones wanted to know would Peter be interested in becoming the Captain of the PGA for GB & Ireland.

On 3rd April 2019 Peter became only the third Irishman to be rise to this position. The great Fred Daly was the first in 1947/48 followed by the highly respected Ernie Jones 44 years later, were the other two.

Peter will hold the title of PGA Captain for two years in which time the biggest sporting event in Ireland’s history comes to our shores.

Ed: What was your amateur background?

PH: I didn’t win any of the boy’s tournaments but was always well placed and therefore got an Irish Boy’s call-up.

I also helped Lurgan College win the Ulster Schools Golf at Massereene Golf Club by winning the individual prize with a score of 69.

Ed: Name you favourite fourball of all time and why?

Peter: I sit on the board of directors, but I am more of a figurehead much like a captain of a golf club. I represent the organisation at different events and attend presentations and award ceremonies. During the Open I have the privilege to host a cocktail reception for the members of the PGA. Ed: You must be very proud to have received such an honour?

PH: Yes. It is a tremendous honour, not just for me but for my family, friends, Lurgan Golf Club, Lurgan town, Northern Ireland, Ireland and the PGA Irish region.

Ed: What are your biggest professional golf achievements?

PH: Along with winning many different Pro-am tournaments I partnered Phil Posnett at Birkdale and Hillside in the British Fourball Championship which we

PH: That’s really difficult. There are so many golfers I would love to play with but it’s hard to go past the great ‘Seve’.

He was on Tour at the same time as me and everyone knew that he was the person to beat. He had such charisma and a fantastic ability around the greens. Rory has to be in the fourball.

I am still very friendly with Michael Bannon (his coach). Many years ago, I remember Michael telling me about this young five-year-old who was going to be a superstar. Now Rory is probably the best ball strikers in the world. My dad.

He has been the biggest influence in my golf and my life, and it would be great to partner him with ‘Seve’ against myself and ‘Rors’.

Ed: What do you think of the new rules?

PH: The USGA and the R&A deliberate a lot and took their time to ask the PGA before bringing them in. On-the-whole I think they are good. They are just taking a bit of time to settle in. I am a big fan of the new rule about not being allowed to line someone up from behind. It should help speed play up, but I think the rules

Ed: Do you think the Open at Royal Portrush will have a positive impact on golf in Ireland?

PH: Absolutely. It already has done.

No matter where I go, they are talking about the Open at Royal Portrush and how they are trying to organise at trip to Ireland to play. The amount of money that the Open will generate for the local economy will be massive.

PH: As you know I was at Augusta National for the Masters’ and as PGA Captain I was allowed into the clubhouse. I sat down at a table with a gentleman wearing a green jacket. To be honest I didn’t know who he was. It was only when a waiter came down and said, ‘Welcome back Rex’ did I realise that it was Rex Tillerson the former Secretary of State of USA. Tee to Green what to thank Peter for his time and to wish him all the best for the coming two years. I am sure that we will hear more from him in the coming months.

Ed: Do you play or follow any other sports?

PH: Yes, I am a keen runner and still jog every week to keep fit. I watch a bit of football and always look out for the scores of Glenavon Football Club.

Ed: Do you read Tee to Green?

PH: When I am at home, I always read your magazine. However, I missed last month’s issue as I was away for the first two weeks and there were none left at the golf club when I arrived back.

Ed: Finally, I know you have only been in the job for one month but have you any stories that the readers of Tee to Green might like?

Searching For Your Ball (The need for speed!)

Previously: If a player’s ball is not found within 5 minutes after the player or his or her caddie began searching for it:

We go on the range with ‘Lefty’ Phil Mickelson has always been one of the best ball-strikers in the game, starting with his junior days and college career – when he won on the PGA Tour as an amateur in 1991. But despite his booming drives and amazing flop shots, Mickelson didn’t start winning major championships until he started sharpening his putting stroke.

By following Phil’s lead, you can shave strokes off your game.

Mickelson uses what he calls the Circle Drill for putting, often under the watchful eye of short game guru and two-time PGA Championship winner Dave Stockton. The goal is twofold: To hit a variety of putts that break different directions at different speeds, and to add an element of pressure to the practice session.

Start by arranging 10 balls in a three-foot circle around a cup on a practice green; most standard-length putters are 35 inches, so that’s a good measuring stick. Then start putting, trying to make each putt in the circle. Once you’ve made all 10, repeat the process. Phil’s goal is to make 100 consecutive putts before he moves on to other practice, though you might want to start with a more realistic goal of 10 or 20 putts and work your way up.

What happens if you miss a putt? Congratulations – you get to start all over again! This is where the element of pressure comes in: The three-footers that seem so easy when you’re just getting started become much tougher as you get closer to your goal, and you start to feel the pressure of not wanting to start over again.

That’s the same way putting often feels on the course; what looks like a tap-in on the front nine can become a knee-knocker when the heat is on late in a round. By learning what that pressure feels like, and how you respond to it, you set yourself up for success when you get on the course.

Mickelson also makes a practice stroke before each of his circle drill putts, rehearsing the routine he’ll use in competition. The more realistic you make your practice, the more it will pay off!

• The ball is treated as “lost”, and • The player gets a one-stroke penalty and must play another ball from the spot of the previous stroke (that is, must play under penalty of stroke and distance).

(Definition of “Lost Ball”; Rule 27-1c.)

From 2019: Under Rule 18.2, the time for a ball search (before the ball becomes lost) will be reduced from 5 minutes to 3 minutes.

Reasons for Change: •

Limiting the search period to 3 minutes is more consistent with the underlying principle that golf is to be played in a prompt and continuous way, without long pauses in play.

•

In most cases, if the ball is going to be found, it will be found within the first 3 minutes.

•

The total delay for a lost ball can be much longer than the search time alone; for example, it may take 10 minutes or longer to look unsuccessfully for a tee shot including the 5 minutes for search, the walk back to the tee to play another ball under penalty of stroke and distance, and the walk back down the hole to where that ball comes to rest.

•

The time taken in each ball search can also have a negative impact on the pace of play of following groups; when there are multiple long ball searches, the cumulative delay can be major for all those playing on the course.

•

Although this change may increase the number of lost balls, on average the overall impact should be to speed up play.

•

Knowing that the search time is limited to 3 minutes should encourage players to play a provisional ball when they believe there is a chance their ball may not be found.

Karl Fox, an 18-year-old student at St Malachy's College, is a five-handicapper with dual membership - at Fortwilliam and Cushendall. He plays his team golf for Cushendall. Last season, Karl came through the Fred Daly Trophy ranks to feature in the Senior Cup side.

Germany or Bust When I went out to play my local golf course last week, I found that it was filled with golfers all playing by themselves.

IS THIS WHAT IS WRONG WITH GOLF? No longer do we all arrive to play on a weekday and wait to see if anyone else is going out to play. We just go out on our own. This is ruining golf. New members don’t get the chance to meet their fellow members and therefore do not fully integrate into their new club. This gives them no sense of belonging and there is a much greater chance that they will leave within a few years.

Membership at most clubs is falling and the category that is falling the quickest is that of members of less than five years. The golf club councils and committees need to look at this and act now to help reverse this trend. If you look across Europe, there are increasing numbers participating in the sport and membership numbers have never been higher - the reason for this is social and family golf. In Germany and France, they play golf as a family pastime and they love their golf and more and more people are looking to get into the sport.

Surely, we in Ireland should now look at the Germany and France model and start playing more family golf. Who knows we may even enjoy playing golf with our wives, husbands, sons, and daughters.

TTG Ed: Peter, I think you may have hit on something. Too many people are concerned about their handicaps and the only golf they play is either the Saturday competition or practicing for the Saturday competition. Maybe, we need to look at encouraging club committees to organise more ‘family Sundays’. In the meantime, if you are going out to play tonight have a look to see if there is a single playing and ask to join them.
