2019… A golfing year to remember!

This time last year with the fuss about the incoming rule changes that would affect every one of us, there was one golf club nearing the end of a mammoth job in preparing their course to host the greatest golf tournament of them all….Royal Portrush Golf Club.

Fast forward 12 months and now we can reflect on what an incredible impact this event had on our sport in Ireland and especially to the North Coast as the world gathered to witness a truly special week.

My brother Neale and I took our seats on the front row of the media centre and proudly reported on an event in our backyard that we could scarcely have imagined when starting our golf business together back in the mid 1980’s during the turbulent troubles that prevented everyone bar a few from coming to play golf on the great links.

While Neale and I only acquired this magazine in March 2018 and therefore have

only edited 20 of the 184 editions that Tee to Green has produced over the last 18 years, we can reflect on the impact this magazine has had on our local sport as we report from around the country and around the world on the successes and failures of golfers from this island.

So, allow me a little moment to indulge in what Tee to Green has achieved. We became an integral part of the media at the 148th Open and enjoy a continuing strong partnership with the R&A today. The magazine looks completely different to even 12 months ago as we have invested in the presentation and content of the publication and we have delivered on our promise to make the publication an all-Ireland business with a growing social media presence fit for the modern fast world we live in.

More people read the magazine today than at any point during its 18 year history and that is testament to the journalists and writers who help us as well as a growing group of blue chip brands who consider us worthy of spreading their brand story via both print and digital.

This month, we look back with some of our annual awards and we make no apologies for giving the player of the year award to Shane Lowry rather than Rory simply because

of what he achieved in that July week at Portrush. But look out for the rest of the awards inside to see a few surprise winners.

We will take a wee break now for a few weeks and recharge our batteries and come out stronger for 2020 with our joint January/ February edition due into the golf clubs around Friday 17th January. If you want to keep up to date with all the news and can’t wait until January, sign up to any of our social media platforms and follow us as we continue to spread the news happening around the world.

All that remains is to thank you all for your continued support. Welcome to the 184th edition of Tee to Green and obviously our last edition of 2019. As we end another year, I want to take time to reflect on the golf industry, our local scene and the global sport and pass comment on what has been truly a year to remember.

With MILE HIGH - The Sky’s the Limit!

What is CBD, and why is golf embracing its use ahead of other sports?

Among the organisations researching CBD further, the World Health Organization has published a report clearing the safety of CBD, stating: “To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.” So, what exactly is CBD, and what impact does it have when you take it? First of all, it doesn’t get you ‘high’. CBD is the non-psychoactive element of the cannabis plant, while isolate refers to its purified form. It remains legal in the UK so long as it does not contain THC, the component which produces the cannabis ‘high’. There are stringent guidelines on the legal limits of THC.

IT’S ALL ABOUT EDUCATION Since the World Anti-Doping Agency removed CBD from its banned substance list in 2018, the PGA Tour Anti-Doping Policy does not list CBD as a prohibited substance for players. Its focus instead is on the illegality of THC. So why is there a growing list of PGA Champions Tour players using CBD oil for various reasons, which they say include sleep, recovery, anxiety and inflammation? Through word of mouth of the perceived benefits, most of which remain unproven scientifically, the products have spread on the Champions Tour.

ESPN recently speculated that part of the reason CBD oil has been more popular early on in the Champions Tour is because the players are older, with rapidly changing bodies, and are looking for ways to continue competing at a high level with their gruelling schedules.

Despite its open popularity among the senior players, it has taken longer for the perception of and education about the product to filter through to younger PGA tour players or ordinary golf club members. However, that is also changing as quite a few players on the Tour are now signing up to sponsorships and ambassador programmes with high-profile players from both tours, including Bubba Watson, David Toms, Scott McCarron, Vaughn Taylor, DJ Trahan, Kenny Perry, Tom Kite and Scott Piercy, among others.

Bubba Watson announced a partnership with a CBD company in April and displays the company’s logo on both sides of his visor in tournament play. “Just because of, I’m getting older,” Watson told The Street magazine.

“The inflammation in my body, waking up with better sleep. That was the two things I focused on. With a seven-year-old and a four-year-old at the house, and playing golf all day, I needed some energy fast. For me, it was all about sleep and trying to get the body right.”

Northern Ireland has a close tie to the CBD industry, with the world’s leading CBD company, Colorado based Mile High Labs choosing to open its European headquarters in Belfast. Mile High Labs is a large-scale CBD ingredient and product manufacturer offering reliable delivery of bulk CBD and private label services to the world’s leading consumer brands. The company has enjoyed a period of rapid growth since it opened its European Headquarters in Belfast, in March 2019. From a standing start, the company now employs 23 staff, with 15 based at the Belfast office and eight in London.

For our series ‘A Day in the Life’ TTG asked Xavier Medas to share a bit about his job as PGA Advanced Professional at the renowned Castle Dargan Estate in Co. Sligo.

Here is what he said - check out his tips at the end!

HOW DID YOU GET THERE?

WE NEVER PLAY THE SAME SHOT TWICE!

Born in the town of Vichy (France) in December 1979, Xavier grew up participating in many sports, but golf became his 1st choice at the age of 13. His education took his academic pathway to a degree in International Marketing in Sligo (Ireland) as Erasmus exchange Student.

Coming to the West of Ireland was definitely involve golf. Xavier played for the school team and joined County Sligo Golf Club (Rosses Point) where his met Jim Robinson (PGA Professional) who soon gave him the opportunity to work in golf and join the PGA as a member.

What is the difference between coaching beginners and advanced players?

The player’s expectation is what varies the most. For my part, I put as much ownership on the player to make any changes as possible. It is essential to me that the player becomes autonomous in practice and that he or she understands how to connect the dots for better golf.

Qualifying as a PGA Professional in 2004, Xavier developed a strong interest in coaching and retail and started devoting more time for the golfers around. In 2007, after being elected as a full member for the PGA, Xavier was offered to continue his career as Resident Professional in the newly open Castle Dargan Golf resort in Sligo. He completed his education becoming a Level 3 Coach in 2014 and was accredited the title of PGA Advanced Professional in 2016 as a recognition for his professional achievements.

Xavier’s role at Castle Dargan followed a parallel progression from Resident PGA Professional freshly qualified to Director of Golf four years later in 2011. The modern golf professional must be adaptative, reactive and resilient in his role. This role suggests undertaking more responsibilities over time assisting the Resort Team to make Castle Dargan a successful business.

What is “connecting the dots”?

Well, very simply, you need to appreciate your shot behaviour on ball flight(s) to know understand the ball-clubface relationship. From there, you build your connections and potentially review set-up and swing preferences.

Can you share a “tip” for a golfer trying to sort out their swing by themselves?

Yes, I call it “Welcome the Fault”. It is about recreating the bad shot purposely. If you can manage that, you now own the shot and its not unknown anymore. Usually, something wrong will jump out for you to soften or stop in order to start suitable corrections.

TIPS • When practicing, look for “balance” by nature the game is inconstant as we never have the same shot to play twice. Being able to adapt is key. If you miss left, miss right so you “miss” straight.

Describe yourself in your role at Castle Dargan I started at Castle Dargan in 2007 as I had just finished my training in the County Sligo Golf Club under Jim Robinson. AT first, my job was based on the day to day operations, retail and lessons but soon expanded to a more managerial position as Director of Golf. I now look after membership, green fees and the driving range as well as running a busy schedule with golf coaching.

• Don’t go mad, Learn instead! The thought of the same bad happening again will bring frustration and hurt confidence. Ask yourself what was missing. The idea of completing your swing will feel more constructive.

For Example, hitting a wedge heavy can be helped by connecting with the ground passed the ball. A bit of hand eye coordination might be enough rather than reviewing the ABCD of the golf swing.

What part of your career do you most enjoy?

Coaching! Coaching has been the most fulfilling part. Being part of someone’s progression in golf is very rewarding. I love welcoming people to the game as much as progressing the juniors to international standards.

I have been involved with the GUI and ILGU for over 10 years which my journey a very exciting one.

• On the course, we play. Technical though will interfere with your instincts and playfulness. Simplify your pre-shot routine to better golf: 1. Take Information: Gather enough information that will help you become sure about your choice of shot and swing 2. Make a Decision: Choose the shot that is best suited to your ability 3. Commit to the Shot: Play the shot with no additional thoughts

In conversation with with Mark McDonnell - Our new Irish Ladies golf phenomenon TTG: Who have had the biggest influences on your career?

Leona: My dad has always been very supportive and has encouraged me to get to where I am now. Shane O’Grady, my coach, has also been very supportive and I really appreciate all the time and effort he puts in with me.

TTG: Did you feel extra pressure playing at home in the ISPS HANDA World Invitational?

Leona: Not really, I love coming home to play and I hope to play more in the coming years. You can’t beat the Irish crowds.

TTG: What were the highlights of your amateur career?

Leona: I am very proud of what I achieved as an amateur but being on 3 Curtis Cup teams (winning twice) is definitely one of the highlights. Another was being picked for the Ireland team for the 2016 Rio Olympics. It was the first time that golf had featured for over 100 years, so it was a great thrill. I would also say that my time at Duke University, North Carolina was a fantastic experience.

TTG: Talk us through your development as amateur?

Leona: I’ve been fortunate to have a great amateur career representing Ireland and playing across the world. I started to play when I was 9 years old and my first real success was in 2006

when I came third in the World under 12 Championships in Pinehurst. In 2008 I won the Lancome Irish Ladies Close at Westport and in 2010 I became the youngest ever match-play qualifier for the British Ladies Amateur. That year I represented GB & I at the Curtis Cup for the first time. Then, attending DUKE was an incredible experience which really helped my development and I made some friends for life.

TTG: What are the highlights of your professional career so far?

Leona: My two wins on the Symetra Tour. My first win was in a playoff at Windsor Golf Classic, California. I birdied the playoff hole to beat Anannanukam.

Then I won the Symetra Classic in North Carolina by five strokes which secured my card on LET Tour next year.

TTG: Do you get much time to play with your sister and brother?

Leona: When I am at home I do. We play a lot at Slieve Russell who have supported me since I took up golf.

TTG: Who is the most impressive golfer you have played with and why?

Leona: Inbee Park is amazing. Her putting and short game are the best in the world.

TTG: Which is your favourite golf course in the world and why?

Leona: I have to say, Slieve Russell. It is a course that I grew up on and I still love coming home to play it, although, there are many fantastic links and parkland courses throughout Ireland.

Who will be on the plane to Whistling Straits?

A MAJOR YEAR FOR IRISH GOLF!

With the 2020 Ryder Cup little over a year away, we take a look at the potential make-up of Padraig Harrington’s European side.

As we come to the end of the year let’s look back at the 4 biggest golf tournaments…the Majors…and review the winners and losers.

The bookmakers, consider four players certainties to make the team Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose. After that it falls to a potential list of around twenty candidates to fill the remaining eight places. It is also worth noting that in a change from the last Ryder Cup, European Team Captain Harrington will only have three wildcard picks and not the four that Thomas Bjorn requested. Harrington will be attempting to Captain a victorious European side in America for the first time since Jose Maria Olazabal did so in 2012.

Francesco Molinari - Three time Ryder Cup player in 2010/12 and 2018. Has not been the same player since his back nine meltdown at this years’ US Masters. It would be a surprise if his consistency did not place him high up the points list, but he needs a fast start in 2020 to banish the demons of 2019.

Paul Casey - 2018 marked his first Ryder Cup appearance in a decade. Given the emotion he displayed as part of the winning team in Paris, it will be high on his agenda next year to be a member of the team. A very consistent performer, expect him to not be relying on a wildcard.

Henrik Stenson - After receiving a wildcard for the 2018 matches, I expect Stenson to miss out in 2020. He may be a natural partner for Justin Rose but he is not the same player that claimed the claret jug in 2016. Harrington will be mindful that Ryder Cups are won on the greens and this is an area that Stenson no longer excels in.

Ian Poulter - “The European Postman who always delivers”. I lthought that Poulter’s best days were behind him when he missed the 2016 Ryder Cup matches through injury but a victory in Houston in 2018, followed by an exemplary performance in Paris at the Ryder Cup illustrated that he can still compete on the biggest stage. If he does not make the team on merit, Harrington may be tempted to use one of his wildcard picks.

Sergio Garcia - Has only missed one Ryder Cup, 2010, in the last twenty years. Victory in Holland in September showed he still has plenty of game left as he enters his forties. I expect him to make the team on merit, due mainly to his consistent ball striking.

Shane Lowry - This time last year, Lowry was an outsider to make the team. Victories in Abu Dhabi and more significantly at the Open Championship have changed all of that. He is now rated at 4/7 to make the team. His short game will prove to be a major asset to the European side as they battle the hostile American crowds. Harrington will be desperate for him to make the side.

Bernd Wiesberger - Three victories in the space of five months have reinvigorated a career that was stalling because of a wrist injury. Can he keep his consistent performances going in 2020?

I think he will need to, as it would be difficult for Harrington to choose an inexperienced rookie as a wildcard.

Matt Fitzpatrick - The most consistent and underrated performer on this years’ European Tour. He may have looked like a “rabbit in the headlights” when he made his Ryder Cup debut in 2016 but he is a different player now. A base in Florida, membership of the PGA Tour and a growing friendship with McIlroy mean he will in all likelihood be a part of Harrington’s plans.

Victor Hovland - The former US Amateur Champion has taken to the Professional game like a duck to water. Gained his 2020 PGA Tour card with limited starts in 2019 and seems undaunted by the big occasion. Harrington will hope he can have the same impact Garcia did on his Ryder Cup debut in 1999. His experience of playing in the States will give him an advantage if he requires a wild card pick.

The major schedule changed dramatically this year, but it still started with the blossoming flowers in springtime in Augusta, Georgia for the 83rd edition of The Masters. Tiger Woods won his 5th Green Jacket by one stroke ahead of 3 runners up. It leaves him 1 shy of Jack Nicklaus’ record of 6 Masters wins and 3 short of his record 18 major wins. At the age of 43 he became the 2nd oldest winner again only bettered by Jack who won at the age of 46.

Amazingly, it was 11 years since Tigers last major, the 2008 US Open, and 14 years since his last Masters’ win. It is rightfully regarded as one of sport’s greatest comebacks. Tiger emerged from the pack when Francesco Molinari hit his ball into the water at the 12th and then 15th holes and meant that he won his first ever major when not leading after 54 holes. What a tremendous start to the “major season”.

CRAMPED INTO A SHORTER PERIOD The new schedule meant that the 4 majors were cramped into a short period of time and the USPGA normally the last major became the second major of the year. It was held at Bethpage State park, New York and saw Brooks Koepka win by 2 strokes over Dustin Johnson to defend the trophy he won last year. Koepka is the only player to have defended two different majors.

Koepka opened up a huge lead after 36 holes, but Dustin got the lead back to 1 before a closing 74 got Brooks over the line for his 4th Major win. Dustin Johnson’s runner up meant he became the 8th player in history to be runner up in all 4 majors.

WOODLAND HAILED AS NEW CHAMPION! We then moved on to Pebble Beach and the 119th US Open. We remember Graeme McDowell winning here the last time it was played in 2010 but this year we had a new major winner in Gary Woodland who held off a charge by world no 1 Brooks Koepka. Gary played basketball at Wasburn University but transferred to the University of Kansas on a golf scholarship. This now seems like a very good decision with a Major win at the iconic Californian resort.

PORTRUSH - LOWRY ROMPS HOME BY 6!

So the final major…The 148th Open took centre stage at Royal Portrush and who will ever forget the scenes with “one of our own” Shane Lowry winning by an incredible 6 strokes from Tommy Fleetwood. Lowry shot 67 in his first and second rounds and followed that up with a course record 63 in the 3rd round to have a 4 shot advantage going into the final round. In challenging conditions Shane shot a 72 to win by six strokes. All eyes were on “local” favourites Clarke, McDowell and McIlroy competing in a major in Northern Ireland for the first time and Darren was given the honour of hitting the 1st tee shot on day 1. He described the event as a watershed moment for Northern Ireland as hosting seemed unrealistic during the many years of the Troubles. The Northern boys didn’t mount a challenge and everybody got behind the likeable Offaly man as his smile and celebrations were the lasting memory of an incredible week.

So 2019…mark it down…the year the schedule changed…the year of the Tiger comeback and of Brooks winning again…but the biggest memory for us Irish golfers was the hosting of The Open and watching Shane win on home soil…you just couldn’t write the script.

Robert Macintyre - The last Scot to play in the Ryder Cup was Stephen Gallagher in 2014 at Gleneagles. Macintyre crucially processes a short game reminiscent of Harrington and this will serve him well as he bids to make the team. However, he need sto back up his high finishes with a victory or two if the is not to rely on a wildcard.

Graeme McDowell - A 4-1 shot to make the team. This to me seems like a decent bet, owing to the resurgence in his career in 2019. Victory on the PGA Tour in March, has given him the necessary platform to plan out the next couple of years of his career. With a massive improvement in his driving stats, I expect the hero of the 2010 matches to enjoy his Ryder Cup swansong in 2020.

Where are all the Irish? on a world- wide basis is very impressive. Yet, when these very talented amateurs turn professional they seem unable to replicate their amateur form and remain “stuck” on one of the many secondary tours below the European Tour. Some even find themselves turning their back on professional golf and returning to the amateur fold.

THESE GUYS NEED TO PROGRESS VERY, VERY QUICKLY Carlow Club Professional Damien McGrane a former winner on the European Tour said in a recent interview that he felt players needed to “succeed very, very quickly.” This was because they can become “institutionalised”.

Have we lost our mojo in producing the next generation of stars that make their way onto the European Tour?

Twenty-five years ago, Ireland had ten professionals with full European Tour Cards (Clarke, Darcy, Feherty, McHenry, McGinley, O’Connell, O’Connor, Rafferty, Smyth and Walton). In the 2010 season we had an unprecedented twelve Irishmen who played a full schedule on the European Tour (Clarke, Harrington, Hoey, Lawrie, Lowry, Maybin, McDowell, McGinley, McGrane, McIlroy, Murphy and Thornton).

However, as we enter the 2020 season, we only have six players who will play an active schedule on the European Tour. Our four major winners (Harrington, Lowry, McDowell and McIlroy) will be joined by rookie Cormac Sharvin and Clandeboye’s Jonathan Caldwell. Caldwell deserves a special mention as he showed real composure to secure his playing privileges at Tour School. Two birdies in his last three holes in a final round of 67 got the job done when he was under the upmost of pressure. This bodes well for his ability to cope with a full season on the European Tour next year.

In an era with unparalleled success at major championship level, we seem to have lost our mojo in producing the next generation of stars that make their way onto the European Tour. This is in spite of the exceptionally impressive amateur coaching structures set up by the GUI. The funding that the GUI and the two governments North and South also give to assist our elite amateur stars compete

McGrane went on to say that “If I played on the Challenge Tour for more than three years. I would become a Challenge Tour player. If you play Europro Tour, year in, year out, you become a EuroPro player. These guys need to progress very very quickly.

If you look at Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Graeme McDowell, Paul Dunne, any player that was successful, the Challenge Tour was a one or two year hit max, and they were gone never looked back. Any player that struggles to get off the Challenge Tour is a Challenge Tour player. Unfortunately for these guys, they play on the lower tour for a number of years until someone eventually pulls the plug on the cash flow and they give up and go into another industry or they fall back into the golf industry because they think they’re a superstar with nowhere to go.”

Having played in 400 European Tour events, McGrane’s opinions should be highly respected. McGrane graduated to the European Tour after fully qualifying as a PGA Professional and learning the ropes as an assistant at Headfort and the club pro at Wexford. Maybe this route to future stardom would serve our aspiring Tour stars better?

However, Caldwell secures his Tour Card for 2020 Johnny Caldwell, who last held his full European Tour Card in 2009, battled through the final stage of Q School with an important 67. After bogeying the 15th hole he birdied 2 of the last 3 holes to finish 19th and secure in the top 25 who receive their full playing privileges for 2020.

Caldwell has been plying his trade in the second and third tiers of European golf for many years now but this return to the big time is a dream come true for the likeable Clandeboye man. He said, ‘I am definitely better equipped to retain my card than I was in 2009’.

After playing on the Walker Cup at Royal County Down Golf Club in 2007 with Rory McIlroy and Danny Willett and against Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, Billy Horschel and Webb Simpson, he played in the 2008 Palmer Cup winning team in Scotland before turning professional later that year.

He intends to play approximately 20 tournaments this season with the first at the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard’s Creek in South Africa between 28th November and 1st December. A strong Irish contingent contested the event, including Cormac Sharvin, currently eighth in the order of merit, and Gavin Moynihan, who were among 15 home players included in the field. The first morning saw overnight rain and continuing showers making life initially difficult for the players. As the weather improved, so did the scoring as the young players got to grips with the course.

Early leaders were Emilio Cuartero Blanco, Aaron Cockerill, and Oscar Lengden.

Over the following two days, more benign conditions allowed many spectators to enjoy the players exhibiting their considerable skills. However, the course remained a challenge with its set up, the difficulty of the rough, with the leading players unable to achieve better than -11 on the scoreboard.

On the final day, heavy rain delayed the start, and ultimately play was suspended. The leading two players, Cuartero Blanco, and Lengden, both on -11, fought a playoff on the difficult par three 17th. At the third attempt, Cuartero Blanco holed a long birdie putt for a prize of €32,000, and his first Challenge Tour victory. Best home performances came from Cormac Sharvin, (joint 5th), and Gavin Moynihan, (joint 10th), securing Sharvin the Christy O’ Connor Jnr. Trophy as leading Irish player. Andrew Snoddy, the Tournament Director, remarked that the Tour and many of the players had found Headfort, “One of the best, if not the best test provided on the Tour this year. Many thanks to all members and volunteers who stood out in the rain”.

The Stone Irish Challenge finally took place on the Christy O Connor Jnr. Headfort New Course, being the final full field event of the Challenge Tour season. The leading 70 players retain their cards for next season and move onwards in the Race to Mallorca where full cards for next season’s PGA European Tour can be attained. The €200,000 tournament would go a long way to earning the winner a place in the upcoming Challenge Tour Grand Final, which sees the top 45 players competing to finish in the top 15 on the Rankings and earn European Tour Cards for 2020.

Jamie Hodges, Head of the Challenge Tour declared that “Headfort Golf Club proved to be a fantastic test of golf for the Stone Irish Challenge. The Challenge Tour players were very complimentary of the fast and smooth greens, the thick and challenging rough as well as the overall demand on shot-making they were presented with throughout the week. The clubhouse staff were also fantastic and made our players feel very welcome. It is safe to say Headfort held its own against the future stars of our game” Headfort looks forward to welcoming visitors and societies to enjoy the Same golf experience as the Challenge Tour in the near future.

At 24, Lisa Maguire retires but looks to a future in golf Twenty four year old Lisa Maguire from Cavan has called time on her professional career at the tender age of 24.

After a fantastic amateur career representing her province and country at all levels, she made her debut in the Curtis Cup at the age of just 15 in 2010.

In 2014, like her twin sister Leona, she pursued her golfing and academic career at Duke University in North Carolina. Whilst Leona’s golfing career flourished at Duke, Lisa struggled with making adjustments to her swing.

Despite turning professional after graduating from Duke in 2018, Lisa has now decided to pursue a different path in the game.

Lisa commented, “Golf has been and still remains one of my true passions in life, and I am very excited to be continuing my career in golf, working with Modest Golf Management. Growing the women’s game is very important to me and I look forward to working collaboratively with Modest in helping young girls achieve their dreams of reaching the highest levels of the professional game. Playing elite golf from a young age on an international stage provided me with opportunities to grow and develop both athletically and personally and I am truly appreciative of the efforts made by all those involved down through the years. To everyone at Duke University and to those who I crossed paths with over the course of my college career, I thank you for all the love, support, guidance and laughs. To my coach Shane O’Grady who invested countless hours into the growth and development of my golfing game, your hard work and dedication really brought out the very best of my golf game.

Finally, to my family and friends who have continually supported me 110%, this journey would not have been possible without you all and I am excited to share the next chapter of my golfing journey with you as it enfolds over the coming years. This is not the end of the book, but simply the turning of a page, and I am looking forward to the continuation of what I believe to be an exciting story.”

Zerofit continues to explode here and State-side Japanese company Zerofit created quite a stir last winter with their unique baselayers, especially the ‘ultimate’ product which has been independently tested to be 5 times warmer than the market leader. The ‘ultimate’ uses a patented knitting process and a mix of 5 fabrics to create a product that is not only incredibly warm but also moves much better with your body movements than a traditional baselayer. Most other baselayers use compression to retain body heat and feedback is that they often restrict movement, feeling tight – the ‘ultimate’ is the exact opposite, you feel cosy warm but have phenomenal freedom of movement.

This month we have some very interesting ‘old’ dates that have been sent in and we thank everyone who has contributed.

In December 1650, The first recorded round of golf in USA was reported.

Originally known as ‘kolf’ it was first played by the Dutch and brought to Fort Oregon now Albany, New York. It was a sport that could be played all-year round and was played in the streets, on the ice and in the fields.

In December 1659, The commissionaire of Fort Oregon banned the playing of ‘kolf’ in the streets as it was deemed to be too dangerous. The fine imposed on those breaking the law was set as 25 guilders.

On 12/12/1899, Dr George Grant patented the wooden tee. Grant was an African/American and a Harvard University graduate. He invented the wooden tee because he said he was frustrated with his ball moving on the mounds of sand and mud that up to that date was the way of ‘teeing’ up but maybe it was because he didn’t enjoy getting his hands dirty. Either way it is still used today.

On 9/12/1926, The USGA legalised steel shafts. Before 1926 most clubs were made with hickory shafts. Although steel shafts were originally patented in 1910 by Arthur Knight it took 16 years before they could be used in National tournaments.

On 2/12/1976, Gary Player was honoured by being the 1st golfer immortalised on a stamp. South Africa produced a series of stamps to honour the ‘Black Knight’. He was the 1st golfer across the world to be featured on a stamp. Player is one of only five players in history to win the career Grand-Slam and won nine Majors.

On 2/12/2013, The Curragh Golf Club restored the title ‘Royal’ to their name.

On 21/9/1910, King George V bestowed the ‘Royal’ name to The Curragh, the oldest club in Ireland, but when the British withdrew from Ireland in the 1920’s the ‘Royal’ title was removed by the members. In December 2013, the members voted by a significant majority THE HALL OF FAME - Top down: to restore the title and to become ‘Royal The Wooden Tee Peg, Arthur Knight, Curragh Golf Club’.

Walter Hagan was born 21/12/1892.

Hagan was a colourful personality and helped raise the profile of the professional golfer. He won 11 Majors to lie 3rd overall behind Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. He only played in the Masters after his prime and never won the tournament.

Trevino was another colourful character who won six Majors. The only one that eluded him was the Masters. He was inducted into the Golf Hall of Fame in 1981. ‘Super Mex’, who won 92 tournaments across the world, was known for his quick wit and humour.

Tom Kite was born 9/12/1949.

Despite having 27 top 10 finishes in Majors, Kite only won 1, the 1992 US Open at Pebble Beach. From 19751986 Kite finished in the top 10 in the Masters’ 10 times. He won 37 times in his career and spent 175 weeks in the top 10 golf rankings.

Tiger Woods was born 30/12/1975.

Brandt Snedeker was born 8/12/1980.

He won the 2012 FedEx Cup with a victory that moved him into the top ten of the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time in his career. On August 16, 2018, he shot the tenth sub-60 round in the history of the PGA Tour, firing an opening round 59 at the Wyndham Championship.

Rickie Fowler was born 13/12/1988.

Fowler has won nine professional events and is the only player in history to have finished in the top 5 in all four Majors in one season (2014) without winning. In 2007 Fowler played in the Ryder Cup at Royal County Down Golf Club and won 3 out of his 4 matches.

HOLE 8 - PAR 5 / MOYNE HILL The elevated tee here requires a solid hit to carry to a big sloping fairway, with the preferred line to the right side as everything slopes down to the left. A blind 2nd shot will require a bit of thought, with the shorter hitters favouring the left of centre to avoid a deep & treacherous chasm, longer hitters may however play directly over it to an elevated fairway. This par 5 is rarely reached in 2 and would require an almost perfect 2nd shot over lots of danger & is very much risk and reward.

BEST NEW RULE

REPAIRING SPIKE MARKS As everyone knows, at the beginning of 2019 the R&A brought in many new rules to help with the game. While we think that the rule changes have been good for golf, we felt that one rule stood out. ‘Golfers will be allowed to repair spike marks as well as other damage on the putting green’. At last this rule has been changed. We are told to leave the green as we find it, but very few golfers fix their own spike marks. golf course of the year

PLAYER OF THE YEAR SHANE LOWRY

Tee to green’s player of the year is Shane Lowry. His win at The Open at Royal Portrush Golf Club was the highlight of the whole season. He seemed so calm during the last round and managed to close out a six shot win.

This was redemption for the 2016 US Open at Oakmont when Lowry took a four shot lead into the final round but disappointingly shot 76 to finish tied second. I am sure that the party afterwards went on long into the night.

Lowry was ranked 50th after the US Masters and after the Turkish Airlines was up to 19th in the World.

ROYAL PORTRUSH GOLF CLUB Again, this was a very difficult category. We considered giving the honour to Lahinch Golf Club. They put on a fantastic show at the Irish Open as Jon Rahm beat Bernd Wiesberger and Andy Sullivan by four strokes and we also considered a joint award for Galgorm and Massereene Golf Clubs for their hosting of The ISPS Handa World Invitational in August when for the first time in Europe a professional event was played with both men and lady golfers. In the end we felt that the only club that could win was Royal Portrush Golf Club. The thousands of fans that bought tickets to be at The Open will agree with us that the event was the most spectacular sporting occasion that Ireland has ever hosted. Royal Portrush, Wilma Erskine (former golf club general manager) and the members of the Club must be very proud of their achievements.

LIMERICK GOLF CLUB

Suzann Pettersen had been on maternity leave for almost two years when Solheim Cup captain, Catriona Matthew, chose her as a pick for the 2019 event. Pettersen had only played two events all year and had failed to make either cut. She did not disappoint anyone and even holed the winning putt on the last green at Gleneagles. At the end of the tournament she announced her retirement from golf.

We had no problem selecting Limerick Golf Club as ‘Team of the Year’.

Limerick won the All-Ireland Men’s Barton Shield at Westport Golf Club when they defeated Co Sligo Golf Club in the final. They also won the Lady’s Senior Foursomes All-Ireland at Knightsbrook Resort when they defeated Ulster Champions Massereene Golf Club. Limerick’s men’s Senior Cup team won the Munster title but lost narrowly in the All-Ireland semi final when they lost to Galway Golf Club. A fantastic year for Limerick Golf Club!!!

Irish Lady Professional Golfer of the Year

STEPHANIE MEADOW & LEONA MAGUIRE This was a difficult decision. It was between Stephanie Meadow and Leona Maguire. Both players will be plying their trade on the lucrative LPGA tour in the USA in 2020. Stephanie won the World Invitational at Galgorm Castle earlier this year and Leona won the Windsor Classic on the Symetra Tour. Tee to Green couldn’t separate the two players so, we have given the award to both golfers. 2020 will be the first time in history that two Irish girls have full playing rights on the LPGA tour.

Irish Men’s Amateur of the Year

RONAN MULLARNEY This was a closely run thing. While Robert Brazill won the prestigious Bridgestone Order of Merit, Tee to Green have picked Ronan Mullarney, Galway Golf Club as winner of Men’s Amateur of the Year. Mullarney won the Irish Close, finished 4th at the Irish Amateur and 6th at the East of Ireland at Baltray Golf Club.
