Rollins Preview

BSU will open the Minnesota Duluth tournament on Friday at 11 a.m. against No. 18 Rollins College out of Winter Park, Fla. The Tars were a NCAA Division II South Regional participant a year ago and currently boast a 4-0 record after sweeping their opponents at the Florida Southern Classic, including a win over No. 8 Grand Valley State. Rollins is led by reigning Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year Megan Hodges. An outside hitter from Orlando, Fla., Hodges has led the Tars with 61 kills and a .385 attack percentage. Defensively, Rollins is led by senior Phoebe Corder. A Daktronics All-South Region First Team selectio nlast year, Corder is averaging 3.75 digs for game so far this year.

Series History

This is the first meeting between Bemidji State University and Rollins College.

Winona State Preview

Friday’s match between BSU and Winona State will be a nonconference match between the two NSIC school. The Warriors enter play with a 3-1 mark with their only loss coming to No. 5 University of Nebraska-Kearney. Winona State is led by sophomore outside hitter Bekah Saugen’s 3.83 kills per game. Defensively, the Warriors are guided by two-time All-NSIC libero Shannon McGowan. McGowan enters the weekend averaging 4.67 digs per game.

Series History

Winona State leads the all-time series 44-42. The Warriors won last year’s match in three sets at BSU Gymnasium.

California University (Pa.) enters play this weekend with a 3-1 mark. The Vulcans, a 2010 NCAA Regional Tournament participant, is led by 2010 AVCA All-Region selection Meghan Franz. The 5-11 middle hitter is averaging 2.50 kills per game and is hitting .257. She is joined by Bridget Bielich, who enters the tournament averaging 2.45 kills per game and is hiiting .358. Defensively, Sara McMullen leads the way averaging 3.33 digs per set.

Upper Iowa Preview

The Upper Iowa University volleyball program is under new guidance in 2011 as former Concordia-St. Paul and St. Cloud State assistant Aaron Nelson takes over the program. The Peacocks are 4-1 to open Nelson’s tenure at UIU. Senior outside hitter Nicky Brown leads the way for Upper Iowa averaging 4.06 kills and 3.00 digs per game. Defensively, junior Danielle Gernes comes into the weekend averaging 3.56 digs per game.

Series History

Bemidji State leads the all-time series with Upper Iowa 11-2. The Beavers have won the last two meetings with the Peacocks including last year’s 3-1 victory at BSU Gymnasium.

This weekend’s matches will provide the first national test for the Bemidji State University volleyball team. The Beavers will face their first ranked opponent on Friday as they will take on No. 18 Rollins College from Florida. BSU also has tough matches scheduled against NSIC foes Winona State and Upper Iowa, as well as NCAA Tournament participant California University (Pa.). The University of Minnesota Duluth Tournament will provide the second opportunity for BSU’s youthful lineup to mature before it readies for a tough NSIC season beginning Sept. 13 at U-Mary.

Bethany Thompson (Jr., OH, Owatonna, Minn.) was selected as the Beaver Pride Female Athlete of the Week on Sept. 7.Thompson led the Bemidji State volleyball team to a 3-1 mark to open the season at the Active Ankle Invitational in Sioux Falls, S.D. Sept. 2-3. Thompson had 52 kills (3.25 kills/game) in the four matches and hit .304, while she added 36 digs (2.25 digs/game). The junior recorded the first double-double of her career with 13 kills and 13 digs in a 3-0 loss to University of Sioux Falls. Thompson also set new career highs in kills (17) in a 3-2 victory versus Minot State University and digs (13) versus Sioux Falls. This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection is the first of Thompson’s career and marks the first occasion a member of the BSU volleyball team has been recognized during the 2011-12 campaign.

Fresh Faces The Beavers started three freshman in all four of their matches at the USF Active Ankle Invitational to open the 2011 season. Rachel Craig (Fr., MB, Wadena, Minn.), Kelsi Crawford (Fr., OH/DS, Wadena, Minn.) and Kelly Niles (Fr., OH, Grand Rapids, Minn.) all got the starting nod for BSU. In addition, the Beavers played four other newcomers on the trip including Elissa Christensen (Fr., DS, Montevideo, Minn.), Leigh Peterson (Jr., DS, Deer River, Minn.), Kristen Thingvold (Fr., OH. Crystal, Minn.) and Courtney Volkmann (Fr., S, Wadena, Minn.).
