Game 23: at #1 Minnesota

Jan. 16, 2009 / Ridder Arena (1039) / Minneapolis, Minn. 5-16-2 / 2-15-0 WCHA 1 2 3 OT F BSU 0 1 0 1 MINN 2 2 1 5 Franny Dorr scored her first goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough as Bemidji State was defeated 5-1 by Minnesota. The Beavers struggled to find offense as Minnesota controlled the puck and outshot BSU 49-17 (the first game of the series earlier in the year saw BSU get outshot 49-16), but the road squad fought for the entire 60 minutes and was able to net its first goal against the Gophers this season. Monique Lamoureux put the Gophers up 2-0 after the first period with goals at both the 11:43 mark and the 17:13 mark. Her sister Jocelyne Lamoureux assisted on both goals while Terra Rasmussen and Chelsey Jones each provided the other assist on the two goals. It only took Bemidji State one minute into the second frame to respond, with the first goal starting with a faceoff win in the offensive zone. Erin Johnson won the draw in the left circle and the puck went to Ashley Leopold at the point. She fired at shot at the net and it was deflected by both Johnson and a UM defender. The puck went through the slot to Dorr, who was waiting to shoot it into the back of the net. Dorr scored her sixth-career goal and recorded her 10th-career point. Johnson helped on her team-leading eighth goal of the season and Leopold recorded her fourth helper of the year. Any thoughts of a Beaver comeback was soon dispelled when both Sarah Erickson and Kelly Seeler scored to give the home team a 4-1 advantage heading into the final stanza. Michelle Maunu, Kelli Blankenship, Brittany Francis and Emily West all assisted on the two goals. Minnesota wrapped up the scoring when Jocelyne Lamoureux scored a power-play marker with 2:02 remaining in the third period, and the Gophers went on to win 5-1. Anne Schleper and Jen Schoullis assisted on the goal. BSU netminder Zuzana Tomcikova saved 44 shots and allowed five goals. FIRST PERIOD 11:43 MINN 0-1 6x6 17:13 MINN 0-2 6x6

Game 24: #1 Minnesota

Jan. 17, 2009 / Ridder Arena (1352) / Minneapolis, Minn. 5-17-2 / 2-16-0 WCHA 1 2 3 OT F BSU 1 0 0 1 MINN 3 4 4 11 Annie Bauerfeld scored her sixth goal of the season as BSU fell 11-1 to Minnesota. UM jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead after the first period, and the Gopher attack was spearheaded by sisters Monique and Jocelyne Lamoureux. Monique scored just 19 seconds into the game and Jocelyne recorded a marker 5:05 later. Each sister assisted on the others’ goal. Jaimie Horton put Minnesota ahead 3-0 at the 8:06 mark and the Gophers were off and running. Alexandra Zebro assisted on Horton’s first goal of the season. Despite being down early, the Beavers didn’t give up and were awarded a power-play opportunity 14:28 into the frame after Brittany Francis was whistled for interference. Bemidji State took advantage of the extra attacker by firing two shots on net, with the first going to Erin Cody. The rebound bounced right in front to Bauerfeld, who backhanded a shot over the Minnesota netminder’s glove for her sixth goal of the season. Marlee Wheelhouse recorded the other assist. Cody tied Erin Johnson for the team lead with eight assists this season and Wheelhouse tallied her fourth assist of the year. In the second period, Monique, Sarah Erickson, Horton and Kelly Seeler all scored goals to put Minnesota ahead 7-1. Jocelyne, Monique, Jen Schoullis (2), Dagney Willey, Terra Rasmussen, Emily West and Chelsey Jones all recorded assists. Minnesota scored four goals in the third period to round out the scoring. Monique scored once and Jocelyne scored twice to both complete their hat tricks. Laura May also scored. Zebro (3), Monique, Schoullis and Willey all recorded assists. BSU freshman goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova saved 17 shots and allowed a career-high six goals. She was pulled midway through the second period for Alana McElhinney, who saw her first action since recording her first-career win Jan. 3 against Robert Morris. McElhinney saved 15 shots and allowed five goals. FIRST PERIOD 00:19 MINN 0-1 6x6 5:24 MINN 0-2 6x6 8:06 MINN 0-3 6x6 15:47 BSU 1-3 6x5 PP

Jan. 23, 2009 / John Glas Fieldhouse (149) / Bemidji, Minn. 5-17-3 / 2-16-1 WCHA 1 2 3 OT F OSU 0 2 1 3 BSU 1 2 0 3 Erin Cody and Erin Johnson each tied their career highs with three points and two points, respectively, but it wasn’t enough as BSU gave up a late lead and lost in a shootout after tying Ohio State University 3-3. The Beavers were outshot in every period, but were able to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. After nearly an entire period of scoreless hockey, Cody got the home green and white on the board with 28 seconds remaining in the opening frame. A Buckeye forward possessed the puck at their blue line and she attempted to clear. The disk hit Jackie Robertson and fell to the ice right in front of Cody who had just fallen to the ground. She recovered, puck on her stick, and began racing towards the OSU net. She had a defender on her side but was able to outskate her and blow the puck topshelf by the glove of the Ohio State netminder. Robertson assisted on her third goal of the season, and she now has career highs in both assists and points (4) this year. Lauren Williams was whistled for slashing 2:15 into the second period and it looked like OSU might notch a gametying goal. That idea didn’t come to fruition, however, as BSU’s two leading scorers combined on a sweet shorty. Just 30 seconds into the Buckeye power play, the puck had found its way behind the OSU net and on the stick of one of the defenders. She skated out and sent a blind behind-the-back pass behind the net only to find the stick of a well-positioned Cody. She took the puck and skated in front of the net, passing it through the slot to Johnson, who nudged the disk into the back of the net on the stick side. The goal equaled Bemidji State’s short-handed production from all of last year with four shorty’s this season. Johnson scored her fifth goal of the 2008-09 campaign and recorded her first-career shorty. After a few minutes of scoreless hockey, Ohio State would finally get on the board 9:05 into the second when Morgan Marziali scored off an assist by Hayley Klassen. A little less than two minutes later at the 11:03 mark, the Buckeyes tied the game when Klassen notched a power-play marker with help from both Shannon Reilly and Laura McIntosh. It didn’t take the Beavers long to respond, however, as Cody scored her second goal of the game just 18 seconds later. A Buckeye had the puck near the half wall in OSU’s zone, and she was being harassed by both Johnson and Franny Dorr. The puck was eventually stolen by Dorr who carried it along the goal line near the net. She sent a pass through the slot to Cody, who somehow managed a shot with three members of the visiting squad near her. The first shot was initially saved and Cody slid the rebound five-hole for her team-leading 11th goal of the season. Dorr assisted on her second goal of the year. Cody now has three goals in three games this season against OSU, and she is the first Beaver to score double-digit goals in a single season since three players hit the mark during the 2005-06 season. BSU entered the contest with Ohio State 5-0 when leading after two periods and 0-3 when scoring a short-handed goal, so something had to give. Unfortunately for the home fans celebrating Alumni Weekend, a 19-4 shot advantage for OSU in the third period would prove fatal to Bemidji State’s chances of victory. The Beavers did everything they could to stop a goal from entering their net, but the Buckeyes pulled their goalie with 1:25 remaining in the game, and with just 44 seconds left Reilly tied the game off assists from Klassen and Natalie Spooner. After an overtime period that saw just two shots (both from OSU), the two teams entered into a deciding shootout. The first round saw misses by both Kim Theut and Cody. Then Spooner scored what would eventually be the winning shot in the second round after Johnson and Montana Vichorek both missed. BSU netminder Zuzana Tomcikova recorded 44 saves in a careerhigh-tying 65 minutes of action. Cody recorded her third-career two-goal game, and she also notched her second-career three-point game. Vichorek registered a game- and career-high nine blocks. FIRST PERIOD 19:32 BSU 1-0 6x6
