Nov. 15, 2003 // Bemidji, MInn. W, 47-35 (7-4 / 5-3 NSIC)

Minnesota Duluth’s Cash Langeness and Dave Rufledt combined for 267 yards rushing and four touchdowns, leading the Bulldogs to a 3421 victory over Bemidji State in the final NSIC football game between the two programs. Adam Noble hauled in his first of three touchdown receptions on the afternoon with 37 seconds to play in the first half to bring BSU within 17-7, but it was as close as the Beavers would get. After a 68-yard scoring run by UMD quarterback Cash Langeness, BSU attempted a rally. Jason Smith found Noble from nine and 28 yards out in the fourth quarter, but a 50-yard touchdown run by UMD’s Dave Rufledt was sandwiched in between Noble’s scores and BSU was unable to get within 13 points. Smith completed 15 of 35 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns for the Beavers. Smith became just the second passer in BSU history with 40 career touchdown passes (42). Bulldog DE Russ Rabe finished with 10 tackles (four solo), two sacks, a fumble recovery, two passes defensed and a blocked punt. UMD held BSU to 283 yards of total offense, broke up 10 passes and blocked two punts. The loss was BSU’s fourth in a row to the Bulldogs, and leaves BSU at 2-23-1 against Duluth since 1977.

Bemidji State rolled up a season-high 496 yards of offense, but two interception returns for touchdown by its defense led to a 21-point second quarter and a 45-21 win over Wayne State in the 20th Annual NSIC Metrodome Classic. BSU set the tone for the game with a simply dominant first quarter of play, out-gaining the Wildcats 151-23 with nine first downs to Wayne State’s one. BSU assembled an 18-play, 93yard field goal drive which consumed 7:31 in the first quarter. Torry Joubert intercepted his team-leading fifth pass of the season and returned it 39 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown. Then five plays into Wayne State’s next drive, defensive end Adam Coughlin lept to break up a pass and was able to haul it in with one hand, returning it 22 yards for a touchdown. Coughlin’s score gave him two interception returns for touchdown this season, tying the school record set by Matt Wellumson in 1985. The 45 points is the second-most ever by BSU in a Metrodome game, topped only by a 47-7 win over Minn.-Crookston in 2001. The win improved Bemidji State to 6-4, guaranteeing the program a winning record for the school-record sixth consecutive season.

Bemidji State rallied from a first-half deficit of more than two touchdowns for the second time this season, overcoming a 35-20 halftime deficit in a 47-35 win over Minnesota-Crookston. After a back-and-forth first quarter which saw the teams knotted at 14 after the first 15 minutes, the Golden Eagles exploded with a 21-point second quarter and appeared to take control of the game. The visitors held a 35-20 lead going into halftime. The second half was a 180-degree turnaround for the Beavers. After giving up 195 yards of offense in the first half, the Beavers allowed only 125 in the second half - and just 21 in the pivotal third quarter as BSU assembled its rally. Eddie Acosta scored three touchdowns in the third quarter and four for the game, tying his career high and falling just one shy of the school record. His final performance gives him 5,766 career rushing yards, 10th on the NCAA Division II career rushing charts, and 64 rushing touchdowns. BSU has now won five consecutive meetings in the series and remains undefeated against the Golden Eagles in Bemidji (3-0). The win made BSU just the seventh team in school history to win seven or more games in a season.
