Game Notes / Quick Facts Fast Break • Bemidji State received a vote in the NABC Division II Coaches’ Poll Jan. 24. • It took the Beavers 10 games to reach the 80 point plateau until doing it in four consecutive games Dec. 16-Jan. 7. BSU is 4-1 when scoring 80 or more points this season and 10-2 when scoring 70 or more. • Scoring a lot isn’t an issue, as the Beavers have the best scoring defense in the NSIC, allowing just 64.2 points per contest. • BSU is 12-2 when leading at halftime and 14-2 when tied or winning at half this season. It’s losses coming from to then-No. 17 Winona State Dec. 9 and then-No. 21 St. Cloud State Jan. 13. • The Beavers are 9-4 when winning the previous game in 2011-12. • BSU has outrebounded its opponent 10 times this season and owns a 8-2 record when doing so. Last season the Beavers went 11-4 - all their wins - when bringing down more rebounds than their opponent. • The Beavers have taken care of the ball this season. With an average of 10.7 turnovers per game the team leads the NSIC and ranks third in the nation. • BSU has also been disciplined on the defense end, with 15.9 personal fouls per game the Beavers rank No. 20 nationally. • The Beavers have shot 50 percent or better in four of the last five games and are 8-0 this season when shooting above 50 percent. • Senior James Ellisor leads the league and ranks 9th in the nation with 22.1 points per game. • BSU also leads the NSIC and ranks 9th in the nation in assist/turnover ratio with a 1.37 ratio. That is mostly in thanks to senior Bryce Tesdahl, who leads the league with a 3.1 ratio that also sits 6th in the nation. Tesdahl is the league’s leader in assists per game with 5.9 (12th nationally). He is already the program’s assist leader and has 491 career helpers, looking to surpass 500 this weekend. • Ellisor leads the NSIC in conference games with a 59.3 percentage from downtown. • As a team the Beavers are shooting 39.5 percent from beyond the arc to rank second in the conference and No. 23 in the nation. • The Beavers are 7-1 on Saturday’s in 2011-12. • The 14 victories by BSU is the most in a season under sixth-year head coach Matt Bowen. • Bowen has started six different combinations of five this season. The line-up in the last nine games of Tesdahl, Dermaine Crockrell, Lance Rongstad, Ellisor and Mason Walters is 7-2. Last Time Out: The Beavers used the dominate play of senior James Ellisor and hot second half shooting to go 2-0 in an NSIC home weekend Jan. 20-21. The Beavers downed Minnesota State 75-67 behind 34 points from Ellisor and 68.2 percent shooting from the field in the second half, before Ellisor scored 26 and BSU shot 64 percent in the second frame of a 70-56 victory against Southwest Minnesota State. BSU trailed the Mavericks 34-29 at the half, but went off in the second half, en route to its first victory of the season when trailing at the break. The Beavers and Mustangs were knotted 25-25 heading into the locker room, but again the home team came out of firing in the second half, outscoring SMSU 45-31 in the second. The Marauders: The Marauders are 4-13 overall and 3-10 in conference play to sit tied for 12th with Wayne State College in the NSIC standings. U-Mary snapped a three-game losing streak Jan. 21 with a 70-69 victory at Northern State. Before the losing streak the Marauders upset then-No. 19 MSU Moorhead 72-51 at home. The win is the lone victory in Bismarck for U-Mary, as the team posts a 1-7 record at the Activity Center. Josh Turner guides the team with 14.4 points per game. Jevin Budde is in his first season as head coach of the Marauders. All-Time Series vs the Marauders: The Beavers are 3-9 all-time against the Marauders, with a 2-3 record in the last five contests. second season as head coach of NSU.

All-Time Series vs the Wolves: The Beavers and Wolves have been doing battle since 1959 with NSU holding the 53-24 all-time advantage. BSU has a 3-2 record in the last five contests, including a 88-59 home victory earlier this season behind junior Mason Walters’ career night with 27 points (5-for-5 3-point shooting). Last season in Aberdeen, the Beavers won 92-86. NSIC Preseason Poll: For the first time since 2006, the Bemidji State University men’s basketball team is ranked in the top eight in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Beavers were tabbed seventh (82 points) Oct. 26 in the 2011-12 edition of the coaches’ tally after finishing last season in a three-way tie for 10th in the final regular-season rankings with a 11-15 overall and 8-14 conference record. BSU’s Player to Watch: Senior James Ellisor averaged 17.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game and shot 57.9 percent from the field in 2010-11 to earn Second-Team All-NSIC honors. He led the NSIC in field goal percentage, while ranking in the top 10 in steals (4th, 1.6 spg), blocks (T6th, 0.9 bpg), scoring (7th) and rebounding (9th). He started 25 of 26 games for BSU and posted ten 20-plus scoring games and recorded double-figures in all but two contests. Nationally, Ellisor ranked 32nd in field goal percentage. Welcome to the Northern Minnesota: The Beavers boast four players from Arizona and one from California on the 2011-12 roster. Seniors James Ellisor (Glendale, Ariz.) and Ryan Kinnell (Yuma, Ariz.) are in their second season at BSU, while it marks the first for junior transfers Dermaine Crockrell (Mesa, Ariz.) and Jason Edwards (Phoenix, Ariz.) and freshman Dillon Floyd (Palm Springs, Calif.). 5-1 Start: The Beavers started the season 5-1, the best since the 1997-98 team went 5-1 to open the campaign. BSU was also on a five-game winning streak (Nov. 12-26) to match its longest run under head coach Matt Bowen (Feb. 12-24, 2010). The 10-3 record through 13 games is the best since the 1973-74 squad posted a 11-2 record through 13. Fastest to 10: The Beavers found their 10th win on their 13th contest this season. Only 11 teams in BSU program history (88 seasons) have reached 10 wins in 13 games or faster. The last team to reach 10 wins in 13 games or less was the 1973-74 team (12 games). BSU also fell to then-No. 17 Winona State Dec. 9 62-49, lost 103-93 in a double overtime thriller at then-No. 21 Augustana College and fell to then-No. 21 St. Cloud State 72-70 Jan. 13 to hold an 0-4 record against ranked opponents this season. Game Accomplishments / Notes Gotta Win the Close Ones: In a league as competitive as the NSIC, winning the close games are crucial to separate the non-playoff teams from the postseason contenders. Last season, the Beavers were 3-7 in games decided by five points or less. In 2011-12, BSU is 1-1 in games decided by five points or less and 4-1 in games by 10 or less. Helping Hand: With a dish to Patrick Cassidy in the opening minutes of the 87-82 loss to No. 15 Minnesota State Jan. 21, 2011, senior Bryce Tesdahl became the school’s career assist leader (1976-present). The assist was the 315th of his career, surpassing David Lee (1984-88). He finished first in the league and No. 9 in the nation in assists (6.0 apg) last season. He had four 10+ assist games. His 156 assists last year finished second on BSU’s top season assists chart. This season his 5.9 assists per game is first in the NSIC and 12th in the nation. He posted a career-high 12 assists against Concordia-St. Paul Jan. 14 and posted his eighth 10+ assists game Jan. 21 with 10 against SMSU. Tesdahl is also the assist/ turnover ratio leader in the NSIC with a 3.1 mark that ranks 6th in the nation. BSU’s game, season and career assists records can be found on page 5. NSIC Player of the Week x2: Senior James Ellisor was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Week Nov. 21 by the league office for his efforts in the 68-49 home opener victory Nov. 20 against University of Sioux Falls. He scored 27 points, added a career-high 15 rebounds, went 11-for-18 (61.15) from the field, 1-for-2 (50%) from 3-point land and 4-for-5 (80%) from the charity stripe. He also added a game-high four assists and tied game-highs in steals (2) and blocks (2). In 36 minutes of playing time he only turned the ball over once. Ellisor earned the award for the second time Jan. 23 after he averaged 30.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while shooting 82.8 percent from the field, as he guided the Beavers to a 2-0 NSIC home weekend Jan. 20-21. He tied a careerhigh 34 points in a 75-67 win against Minnesota State University, Mankato Jan. 20 before scoring a game-high 26 in the 70-56 victory versus Southwest Minnesota State University Jan. 21. From the start of the second half of the game against MSU, through the SMSU contest, Ellisor missed just two shots from the field (19-for-21) and on the weekend he shot 24-for-29 (82.8%). He has two NSIC Player of the Week honors in his career. Three players have earned four awards under head coach Matt Bowen (Seth Haake in 2009 and

Lance Rongstad in 2010). The last time a BSU player earned the league’s weekly award multiple times in a season was when Charles Hanks was named the player of the week five times in 2003-04.

Nice Finish: BSU closed the final 7:12 of regulation on a 20-3 run to cruise to a 68-49 home opening victory against University of Sioux Falls Nov. 20. Senior James Ellisor started the run by converting on an old-fashioned three-point play. The Cougars came back on their next possession and found a bucket underneath, but as it would turn out, it would be the last field goal USF would score for the rest of the game. The Cougars’ only other point came on free throw with 24 seconds remaining. Double the Pleasure, Double the Fun: The Beavers have four double-doubles so far this season, three of which have come from senior James Ellisor. His mark is the second most in the NSIC this season. • 27 points and 15 career-high rebounds versus Sioux Falls Nov. 20 • 19 points and 11 rebounds at No. 17 Winona State Dec. 9 • 19 points and 10 rebounds at Upper Iowa Dec. 10 • 11 points and 10 rebounds at Augie Jan. 7. Roaring 20’s: Ellisor was the only Beaver to score 20 or more points this season until sophomore Jake Schalow posted 21 (tied career-high) against Upper Iowa Dec. 10. Now four different players have contributed to nine 20 point performances. Junior Mason Walters poured in a career-high 27 against Northern State Dec. 16 and junior Dermaine Crockrell had 21 in just his second game as a Beavers Dec. 17. Ellisor has nine games with 20 or more points (most in the NSIC), posting a career-high 34 at Augustana Jan. 7. Dirty Thirties: Ellisor has posted 34 points twice this season, establishing his career-high in the 103-93 double overtime loss to then-No. 21 Augustana College Jan. 7 and then tying his mark Jan. 20 in the 75-67 victory against Minnesota State University, Mankato. The marks are the best in conference games this season in the NSIC. Welcome to the BSU Three Party: The Beavers have hit at least five 3-pointers in 17 of the 19 games this season to total 139, an average of 7.3 a game. BSU is shooting at a 39.5 percent clip from beyond the arc (139-for-352) to rank second in the NSIC and 23rd in the nation. BSU hit 10 3-pointers against Minnesota, Crookston Dec. 3, shooting at a 66.7 percent clip (10-of-15), knocked down 15 in 20 attempts (10-for-11 in the second half) to record a new program record for 3-point percentage in a game with a 75 percent clip against U-Mary Dec. 17 that also ranks fourth in the nation for 3-point percentage in a game this season. BSU also hit 10 against Minnesota Duluth Jan. 3, going 10-for-22 (45.5%) and 10 against Concodia-St. Paul Jan. 14 (10-for-18, 55.6%). D-UP!: BSU has allowed its opponent to shoot over 43 percent on eight occasions this season and in total have held the opposing jersey to a 43.5 percentage from the field, sitting fourth in the NSIC. In result the team is holding its opponents to 64.2 points per game, which ranks first in the league. The Beavers held University of Sioux Falls to a season-low 25.9 percent Nov. 20 (best among NSIC teams this season). Tied for a league low is the 14 field goals made by Minnesota, Crookston when BSU visited Crookston Dec. 3.

Staying Out of Trouble: The Beavers are averaging just 15.9 personal fouls per game to rank 20th in the nation.

Since taking his post as head men’s basketball coach at Bemidji State in 2006, Matt Bowen has led the Beaver program to improvements both on and off the court. Becoming the 19th head men’s basketball coach at BSU June 30, 2006, Bowen now enters his sixth season at the helm after spending 15 years as an assistant coach at the Division I level. The Beavers finished the 2010-11 season with a 11-15 overall and 8-14 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference record to finish in a three-way tie for 10th and just a game out of eighth. BSU started the season 3-1, but spent most of the season trying to find a rhythm. The Beavers hovered around .500 until dropping seven straight games Jan. 14 - Feb. 5. Four of those losses came by a five point or less margin. BSU finished the season on a high note, winning four of the last six games, including a 60-58 victory at Winona State to defeat the Warriors for the second consecutive season on their home court. Close games proved to be the difference maker for the Beavers as they closed the campaign with a 3-7 record in games decided by five points or less. Newcomer James Ellisor made an immediate impact by averaging 17.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and a league leading 57.9 field goal percentage to earn Second-Team All-NSIC honors. Bryce Tesdahl continued to dish out assists and became the program’s assist leader. Bowen has molded his team into opportunistic shooters from the free throw line, as the squad closed the season second in the nation in free throw percentage with a 78.9 percent mark from the charity stripe. Bowen earned his first double-digit win season in 2009-10 as the Beavers went 12-15 overall and 8-12 in the NSIC, finishing 11th in the conference. BSU had its ups and downs during the 2009-10 campaign, hanging its hat on sweeping Winona State University for the first time since 2003-04. WSU was ranked No. 17 nationally in the first meeting in Winona where the Beavers needed overtime, then at the BSU Gymnasium, BSU prevailed in a nail-bitter 88-86. The Beavers started 5-3, their best eight-game start since the 1997-98 season. After starting strong the youth and short bench slowed BSU and it lost seven straight and were 2-11 from Dec. 13 - Feb. 6. The Beavers found a rhythm at the end of the season, closing the campaign winning five of six. Bowen saw his first four-year player graduate at the end of the season in Seth Haake, who finished 10th in career points and career assists at BSU, leading the team off the court as a two-time NSIC Academic All-Conference team member. Bryce Tesdahl had one of the best performances in the green and white at the point guard position, finishing fourth in the school’s season assists charts with 137, while leading the team in rebounds and finishing 28th in the nation in free throw percentage. Tesdahl wasn’t the only one hitting from the charity stripe as the squad finished fifth nationally in free throw percentage. Academically, BSU closed the 2009-10 season with a team GPA of 3.03. In 2008-09, BSU went 8-19 overall and 6-14 in the NSIC, finishing tied for 10th. Bowen guided his team to a 6-21 overall record and a 3-15 record in the NSIC for a ninth place finish in 2007-08 and was 5-23 overall and 5-13 in the NSIC in 2006-07. Bowen inherited a 2005-06 team that went 15-13 overall and 9-5 in the NSIC that was dismantled at the conclusion of the season, carrying over just three players. In the process of rebuilding there are bumps along the road, but the Beavers are moving in the right direction, defeating back-to-back nationally ranked opponents during a four-game winning streak in 2008-09 (Jan. 6-16). BSU beat No. 24 St. Cloud State University at home, 69-66, and then traveled to No. 11 Northern State University and won a two overtime thriller 100-93. In the process of rebuilding, Bowen and his staff have recruited and brought in some of the best talent from around the state of Minnesota to help put the pieces of the BSU men’s basketball program back together. Bowen came to BSU after spending the past 15 years molding his coaching style after some of NCAA Division I men’s basketball’s greatest coaching legends. He was a student manager for Bob Knight at Indiana University and served as an assistant coach under both Gene Bartow at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and most recently, Homer Drew at Valparaiso University. Bowen’s trio of mentors have combined for nearly 2,100 career wins and 105 years of head coaching experience. During his four years under Drew at Valpo, Bowen helped to lead the Crusaders to an overall record of 70-52 (.574) with a 41-21 (.661) mark versus Mid-Continent Conference competition. In 2003, his first season at the university, the team was 20-11 overall and 12-2 in the league as it grabbed the front end of back-to-back conference titles. The Valpo men capped the year off with a trip to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT). The following season, the Crusaders went 1813 overall with an 11-5 mark versus the league to earn their second league crown and a berth into the NCAA Tournament. In addition to game day and practice duties, Bowen was responsible for organizing all recruiting efforts, summer youth camps, game preparation and scouting and being the team’s academic coordinator. As a recruiter, Bowen was responsible for signing the No. 1 incoming class in the Mid-Continent Conference and one of the Top-100 nationally according to the 2006 HoopScoop and Dave Telep recruiting publications. Bowen’s ties to the Midwest, specifically Minnesota, were evident in the class as it was headlined by Mr. Basketball Minnesota Finalist and Tartan High School graduate Urule Igbavboa. Bowen began his collegiate coaching ventures in 1995 when he was hired as an assistant coach at Alabama-Birmingham. In seven seasons at UAB, the Blazers captured a Conference USA National Division Championship (1999), went to the NCAA Tournament (1999) and were twice invited to participate in the NIT (1997, 1998). The River Falls, Wis. native is the son of long-time NCAA Division III head men’s basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Bowen has been around basketball all of his life, but he first acquired a taste of his own for collegiate basketball as the student manager for Knight’s Indiana Hoosiers (1990-1995). While serving under coach Knight, Bowen was a part of two Big Ten titles (1991, 1993) and four NCAA Tournament appearances, twice advancing to the Elite Eight (1992-1993) and earning a spot in the Final Four in 1992. He joins a long list of former Indiana managers who have gone on to make a name for themselves in coaching, most notably former New Jersey Nets Head Coach Lawrence Frank, a manager at IU from 1989 to 1992. While at Indiana, Bowen also worked directly with George David, now the Director of Player Personnel for the Detroit Pistons and Ryan Carr, Director of Scouting for the Indiana Pacers. In addition, Bowen’s father, Rick, got his feet wet as a Hoosier student manager under Branch McCracken in the 1960s. Bowen is a 1995 graduate of Indiana with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER). He picked up a Master of Arts degree in education during his time at UAB, graduating in 1999. Bowen and his wife Ashli have a nine-year-old daughter McKenzi and a four-year-old daughter Addison.
