Expert witness service Did you know that BSP offers an expert witness service in a number of disciplines and areas?

Director Carl Hilton is one member of the team who is currently working as an expert witness on cases, advising on many aspects of structural engineering.

Carl, who has been a Chartered Member of the Institute of Structural Engineers since 1996 and has extensive experience from over 30 years in the industry, has performed the expert role for eight years now and undertaken cases ranging from collapsed retaining walls, defective swimming pools, structural stability,

defective slabs and subsidence as a result of flooding.

An expert witness is engaged to give an opinion based on experience, knowledge and expertise, and has a level of specialised knowledge or skill in a field that qualifies them to present their opinion about the facts of a case during legal or other adversarial proceedings. The overriding duty of an expert witness is to provide independent, impartial and unbiased evidence to the court or tribunal to help them reach a decision.

Multi-storey car park BSP Consulting is undertaking its latest role in the expansion project being carried out at the headquarters of HR and payroll software experts MHR. The company is civil and structural engineer for a new £4.5 million multi-storey car park being built over four floors at MHR’s base at Ruddington Fields Business Park, near Nottingham.

The facility is being created on the site of the company’s existing ground-level car park and will have space for an extra 190 cars on the site. It will have a solar panel roof

which will power internal lighting and charging points for electric vehicles.

The car park is being built by Stepnell. Architects and construction consultants YMD Boon are also part of the team.

It is the latest project involving BSP at the site – the company was civil and structural engineer on MHR’s new build Wellington House and is currently involved in the renovation and refurbishment of MHR’s Britannia House.

Retail Retail scheme for BSP

Engineers from BSP Consulting have been involved in the engineering aspects of a new mini retail park on Loughborough Road in West Bridgford.

The scheme on the site of the former Sandicliffe Motor Group showroom involves refurbishing the existing building to create six ground floor units and one first floor unit, along with new car parking spaces.

Tenants could include a food store, gym operator, fish restaurant, sandwich bar and veterinary clinic, once the scheme has been completed.

BSP’s role featured preplanning work, including flood risk assessment, drainage strategy, site investigation, transport assessment and travel plan. In addition, investigatory works were undertaken on the existing structure at planning stage.

The client is B&K Thomas Ltd.

Mixed-use development

A Co-op convenience store has been confirmed as part of a £3.7m mixed-used scheme near Aylesbury.

Deeley Construction has begun work on the new children’s day nursery, retail unit and 17 apartments in Pegasus Way, Haddenham, in partnership with Henry Davidson Developments, with the scheme set for completion in summer 2020.

BSP is engineer on the project being built on the site of a former airfield.

Oldham retail project

BSP has produced full civil and structural designs for a proposed new mixeduse retail development in Oldham. The scheme, being developed by Quora, is anchored by a 28,560 sq. ft.

Lidl supermarket and a 68room Travelodge hotel, and will also feature four smaller commercial units.

Designed by The Harris Partnership and to be constructed by Jessops Construction, the scheme is earmarked for the Prince’s Gate development on the site of the former Metrolink Park & Ride land at Oldham Mumps.

Supermarket, hotel and care home

Swale Borough Council has granted planning permission for a new Aldi supermarket and Premier Inn in Faversham, Kent.

BSP Consulting provided civil, structural and traffic pre-planning and due diligence engineering services to bring forward the retail site, a hotel site and a plot for a care home on the development and will be providing engineering services to deliver the Premier Inn hotel scheme.

The Aldi and LNT care home schemes will be developed out by the respective end users following plot sales.

The planning permission was secured for Henry Davidson Developments by Pegasus Group’s planning team.

Slice of success for SuDS scheme at Green Apple Awards recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world.

Launched in 1994 by The Green Organisation, they have become well established as one of the most popular environmental campaigns in the world.

BSP Consulting received a Green Apple Award for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage, achieving a civil engineering silver award, for the exciting and educational SuDS project the company installed at Birkett House School.

The SuDS scheme includes a drainage system, play gardens, a wetland site and wildflower grassland at the Wigston school, which caters for pupils with special educational needs.

A prestigious Green Apple Award has been presented to BSP Consulting for an innovative Sustainable Drainage System the company created at a Leicester school.

The Green Apple Environment Awards

BSP was the main designer for the drainage and worked closely with Nottingham company DSA Environment + Design. The firm used its engineering and drainage expertise to transform the DSA vision of a biodiverse, learning space focused around water into a viable, effective and impressive sustainable drainage infrastructure scheme.

Other members of the team involved in the project for Leicestershire County Council included Willmott Dixon and A+G Architects.

Industrial park open for business A new £5.5m industrial park in Coalville that’s set to create 120 jobs has been officially opened.

BSP Consulting provided geotechnical, civil and structural engineering services for Apollo Court Business Park, built by Willmott Dixon for Leicestershire County Council.

It has created a range of high-spec industrial units ranging from 1,000 to 9,000 sq. ft. which will support startups and firms looking to expand.

£2.4m allocation from the Local Growth Fund, a pot of government funding awarded to the Leicester and

Schools projects underway Engineers at BSP Consulting are currently involved in a string of schemes in the education sector.

The Derby office of BSP is working on a total of six projects at sites in a number of different counties and cities including Birmingham, Bedfordshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Warwickshire.

The company is providing civil, structural and transport engineering services for projects that are currently at different stages – from early design through to on site.

The developments include new teaching blocks, extensions and sports facilities.

Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership Limited (LLEP) for projects that benefit the local area and economy.

“BSP has wide expertise across all sectors, but our portfolio of education projects has expanded significantly in recent times,” said BSP director Clive Roddick.

Conference facility on the agenda BSP is civil and structural engineer for a new £9m conference facility being built by global chemical corporation Lubrizol at the company’s site in Hazelwood, Derbyshire.

Designed by Morrison Design, the high-tech conference centre is being partially built below ground - into the hillside - to create a split-level facility which will be used for meetings and training.

It will replace Lubrizol’s ageing training facility and has been designed to be as energy efficient as possible, with heat recovery systems, natural ventilations, a living roof and other technologies.

The building is predominantly steel framed, with a southern elevation that is mainly glazed with substantial solar gain protection cantilevering from circular concrete columns.

The circular columns are exposed with a polished finish.

The new building, which will be able to accommodate up to 200 people, is expected to be completed during 2020.

Contractor is G F Tomlinson.

National Space Centre role takes off Work is almost complete on a project to create a new mezzanine floor at the National Space Centre in Leicester which will be used for teaching and development.

BSP Consulting is engineer for the scheme, being built by Woodhead Group and procured through Scape Venture. Architect for the project is RG+P. The new space, working title XR Labs, will host an Extended Reality creative studio, focusing on teaching and developing Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality. This will allow

the National Space Centre to deliver amazing simulated experiences and teach young people the wonders of immersive story-telling.

It is being created thanks to funding from the Inspiring Science Fund – a

partnership between the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and Wellcome, as well as the Local Growth Fund from Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP), The Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 and The Garfield Weston Foundation.

Technically challenging, the development has involved assessment of the existing structure and adding a new floor to both abut up to, and be supported off, the existing steel frame.

Win at fbe East Midlands Award 2019

BSP is celebrating after a scheme jointly nominated with architects and sports business consultants LK2 won the Non-Residential Project of the Year Award at the fbe East Midlands Awards 2019.

Urban high-wire attraction Altitude44 at Grand Parade, Skegness in Lincolnshire, which opened in the summer, took the title at the

Chairman’s Awards Dinner held at the Albert Hall, Nottingham.

The judges said: “Altitude44 was particularly appealing to the judges because of the positive impact it has had on both visitors and residents of Skegness. It is a highly attractive addition to Skegness’s famous seafront and encourages fitness and wellbeing as well as adventure and excitement. It is innovative and immediately became a landmark and a new focus for the local community as well as providing new employment opportunities.”

The attraction was developed by

Magna Vitae, with KristallTurn the main contractor, and is billed as the UK’s highest urban high wire attraction. It features four giant-sized platforms within which sit 44 fun obstacles of all different shapes and sizes, and which have a distinctly seaside theme. A new café has also been created, as part of the attraction.

BSP business development director Jef Todd said: “We were delighted to be involved in creating the highest urban high wire attraction in the UK and are thrilled that it has now been recognised at the fbe East Midlands Awards 2019. Well done to all the team involved in the project.”

Out and about Feeling on top of the world

It was third time lucky for BSP director Clive Roddick in his attempt to conquer the Matterhorn – which, at 4,478m, is one of the highest summits in Europe.

Clive and his climbing partner Gordon Day climbed the Hornligrat route, which has challenged them for the last 12 years, with two previous attempts thwarted by bad weather. Their latest attempt was not without drama. As they descended, there was an incident unconnected to them which resulted in two fatalities when a rock pinnacle collapsed taking out a section of fixed ropes and part of the route, effectively isolating them on the summit slope.

In a nod to Germany’s famous Oktoberfest, BSP teamed up with law firm Smith Partnership and brand agency Champions (UK) plc to stage a networking event with a difference, incorporating traditional German food, music and beer.

Congratulations

Well done to senior civil engineering technician Jordan Leech, who works in our Derby office, on successfully passing his ICE 2019 technician professional review and gaining his EngTech membership. Jordan joined BSP in July 2017 and has since gone on to become a key member of the civils team, helping to implement BIM.

Team-building sessions A joint networking event held between BSP Consulting and Edge PM involved guests trying their hand at polo. It was held at Leadenham Polo Club in Lincolnshire.

“This incident certainly added to the feeling of exposure and we were glad when we were off this section,” said Clive.

BSP Consulting teamed up with Mather Jamie and Danaher & Walsh to host a series of clay pigeon shoots at Lakeside Sporting at Wymeswold near Loughborough. The events are popular and have now become regular dates on the calendar.

BSP’s Derby, Leicester and Nottingham offices each recently held teambuilding events which saw employees taking to their bikes, go-karting and successfully tackling escape room challenges. Three groups of five all managed to get out of rooms at Unescapable, Derby, in the allotted time, while Leicester office structures director Paul Elphick and associate director Tim Wilson won their groups during a go-karting event at Stretton Circuit, near Leicester. Members of the Nottingham office enjoyed a teambuilding session that featured mud, rain and plenty of fun…. trail riding the Sherwood Pines Red Route at the Nottinghamshire forest.
