BSP celebrates award for refurbishment

procurement consortium EEM Ltd, the award ceremony recognises and celebrates professionalism, excellence and innovation within the housing and construction community.

“As with any refurbishment of an existing building, the key is to understand, as best you are able, the fabric of the building ahead of the contractor getting to site,” said BSP director Carl Hilton.

BSP Consulting is celebrating the news that Romorantin Place in Long Eaton has been presented with a Building Communities Award.

The company was the civil, structural and geotechnical engineer for the refurbishment project which has transformed a derelict block of flats into 16 new two-storey family homes.

BSP’s work included the initial phase 1 and 2 site investigations and flood risk assessment, along with structural refurbishment and remodelling of the existing buildings to form town houses.

I am extremely pleased with the way that we approached both of these challenges and as a result I feel that BSP played an important part in the successful delivery of this scheme. It’s great news that the project has now won an award.”

BSP dives into leisure centre project

A consortium including BSP Consulting has been appointed on a scheme to build a new £18m leisure centre in Nottinghamshire.

Planning permission has recently been granted for the Bingham Leisure Centre project, which will include a 25m six-lane pool, a teaching pool, a spectator area, a gym, exercise studio rooms, changing facilities and a community hall.

A separate two-storey office building for local businesses is also being built at the site in Chapel Lane.

BSP is providing the civil and structural engineering services for the Rushcliffe Borough Council scheme. Other members of the consortium are Henry Riley LLP, providing project management, cost management, principal designer and CDM services, ESP Ltd, providing mechanical and electrical services, and YMD Boon, as architect and landscape architect.

The project is due to complete late 2021.

Leisure Buxton Opera House role

Green light for Starbucks

BSP has had a long-standing relationship with Buxton Opera House in Derbyshire, supporting the venue with refurbishment and other works over the past few years.

The company has worked for TAD Architects on the building, which was designed by Frank Matcham, one of Britain’s finest theatre architects, who also designed the London Palladium.

Café scheme

BSP Consulting is the civil and structural engineer on a £3m project to create a new café as part of the existing Century Theatre on the former Snibston Colliery site in Leicestershire.

Leicestershire County Council is behind the scheme, which will give the theatre a new entrance area. Other members of the team are architects A+G and contractor Fortem.

Village hall project Preliminary structural drawings have been drafted

by BSP Consulting for alterations being proposed at South Luffenham Village Hall in Rutland.

BSP was appointed by Market Harborough-based Corporate Architecture for the work.

Planners have given the go-ahead for a 24-hour drive-through Starbucks on Queens Drive, Nottingham.

BSP Consulting was appointed by Benchmark Property to provide civil, structural and transportation engineering services for the scheme. It’s a site that’s well known to BSP, as this is the third project on the plot on the corner of Queens Drive and Castle Bridge Road that the company has been involved in.

The new Starbucks designed by architects Stephen George + Partners - will be built on vacant land next to a Dunelm store.

Community centre completed

BSP Consulting was the civil and structural engineer for Hallam Fields Community Hall in Birstall, Leicester, which officially opened earlier this year.

The centre, designed by AMLI Design, was built off Hallam Fields Road by Tanwood Construction for Birstall Parish Council.

Engineers at BSP successfully overcame a number of challenges, including a steeply sloping site and the need for large open spaces inside the single-storey building.

Go-ahead for new school Planning permission has been granted for a new school as part of the extensive Castleward regeneration scheme in Derby.

BSP Consulting has been involved in the £100 million housing-led Castleward development near the city centre from concept.

Now the company has been appointed as civil and structural engineer for a new £8m primary school at the site, which will provide 315 pupil places and a 39-place nursery.

Procured through Scape Group’s Regional Construction framework and delivered by Morgan Sindall Construction, the project is due to get

under way on site in the summer of 2020, with completion expected by August 2021.

The new school, which is being built on a brownfield site, has been designed by Lungfish Architects and is a mix of one and two-storey blocks, incorporating innovative play spaces on the rooftop areas and terraces.

It will feature 12 classrooms, a shared hall and studio library spaces, along with ancillary facilities.

Restoration project BSP Consulting has been part of the team involved in the scheme to renovate Gordon House in Carrington Street. The company’s role has included surveying, advice on strengthening the structure, adding new shop front glazing restraints and aiding general restoration, such as concrete repair.

Work is expected to be completed soon on the restoration project of an historic building in Nottingham city centre.

Working in partnership with property consultants Bruton Knowles, Rayner Davies Architects designed the works to fully renovate Gordon House in line with the Townscape Heritage Scheme.

BSP on the ball Three new multi-million-pound sporting hubs have been opened in Sunderland.

The new facilities were made possible thanks to £14.2m of investment from the Premier League, The FA and the Government’s Football Foundation, plus a £6.7m contribution from Sunderland City Council.

Alongside additional partnership funding, it represented the biggest ever investment into a portfolio of grassroots sporting facilities in the North-East.

BSP Consulting was part of the team involved in the developments which included the creation of ten full-size third-generation (3G) artificial grass pitches (AGPs), as well as new and refurbished buildings at each site, with changing rooms, café areas, and social and education spaces. Each

hub has its own unique selling-point; Washington Hub has a rugby union accredited 3G amongst its four AGPs, Ford Hub boasts the ability to host national league football games on its stadia 3G and the Downhill Hub also features a state-of-the-art 60-station gym and fitness studio.

The hubs will also play a key role in hosting one of the largest grassroots football leagues in the country, the Russell Foster Youth League.

The improvements were delivered under the five-year Football Foundation Framework won by a Midlands partnership that includes sporting architecture firm LK2, framework managing consultant Gleeds, civil and structural engineer BSP Consulting and M&E engineer Couch Perry Wilkes.

The work has included the rejuvenation of the front of the building and reinstating the fully-glazed windows that were in place in the 1920s when it was an early car showroom.

The ground floor will feature 356 sq m of retail space. Upstairs the office space will continue to be occupied by Bhatia Best Solicitors.

Specialist contractors LDC Heritage Restoration has been undertaking the work.

The consortium is one of only two nationally appointed Football Association/Football Foundation/ Sport England Framework Management Consultants for the delivery of changing rooms, clubhouses and associated facilities.

This is a £300m+ investment from the key partners over five years via a managed application process through the Football Foundation.

This was the latest in a number of projects that BSP and LK2 have successfully delivered together.

Funding boost A £3 million investment by D2N2 from the Local Growth Fund will help pave the way for a proposed 805-house development at Top Wighay Farm near Hucknall in Nottinghamshire.

BSP is providing drainage and flood risk advice to Arc Partnership and Gleeds for the £10.3 million scheme, overseen

by Nottinghamshire County Council.

The D2N2 investment into the Top Wighay Farm development will kick-start the project which had stalled due to a historic funding gap.

Other funders for the project include Nottinghamshire County Council and Homes England.

site situated north-west of Hucknall, will feature an 805-property housing development, a new primary school, and a local community centre.

Developers will use modern building techniques to accelerate construction of the housing units, 30% of which have been designated as affordable.

The development will also feature

land for employment purposes, plus associated open space for community health and well-being.

Work is due to begin by the summer, with infrastructure works expected to be completed by 2021.

University refurbishment scheme BSP Consulting was part of the team involved in a £30m refurbishment scheme to upgrade two key buildings at Loughborough University.

The long-term development – one of the largest refurbishment projects ever carried out at the university – was undertaken meticulously in 19 different phases over more than two years to enable university staff and students to carry on with their work and to minimise disruption.

It included the complete internal refurbishment of both the W and S buildings in the West Park area of the

campus and involved upgrading labs, offices, study areas, lecture theatres, kitchens, toilets and refreshment venues to create light, airy and modern amenities, with state-of-theart equipment, first-class teaching and learning facilities, and attractive break out spaces.

More than 17,000 sq m of space over three floors has been refurbished and modernised in the two 1960s buildings, which are linked.

BSP was the civil and structural engineer on the scheme, which was completed by contractor Henry

Brothers. Franklin Ellis provided architectural and interior design services. The Loughborough University team included CPMG as concept architect, Faithful & Gould for cost management, and M & E engineers WYG.

Lincolnshire SEND school projects

The firm has been appointed as civil and structural engineer on the schemes which are at various stages of development.

New two-storey modular buildings are due to be constructed at Willoughby School, Bourne, and Eresby School, Spilsby. Internal alterations are also being made to the existing facilities of both schools.

BSP Consulting is working on developments at a number of SEND (Special Educational Needs & Disabilities) schools in Lincolnshire.

“These educational facilities will provide valuable new spaces at schools in Lincolnshire for youngsters with special educational needs and we are very pleased to have been appointed as civil and structural engineers by Willmott Dixon to work on them,” added BSP director Carl Hilton.

Broadmarsh networking

BSP Consulting has become a patron of property and construction network ProCon Leicestershire for the first time, one of 14 companies who have pledged their support in 2020.

The company is also a patron of ProCon Nottinghamshire.

It seems a long while ago now, but our last ‘live’ networking event was a tour around the site of the Broadmarsh redevelopment in Nottingham.

Organised by the First Thursday Club in conjunction with Galliford Try, it attracted a wide range of participants from across the construction sector.

Competition winner Eagle-eyed associate director Matthew Viggars took top prize in our online ‘guess who’s the owner of this home working station’ competition.

Run as part of a number of staff competitions organised by BSP during the coronavirus lockdown, it featured photos of our team members’ temporary home working set ups.

Online networking

Congratulations to BSP team members Sam McGuigan and Simon Bond who have been promoted to senior engineers.

Based in our Derby office, Sam has been with us for four years. In parallel with the technical knowledge Sam has developed over this time, he has also established good relationships with clients and offers considerable support and training to his colleagues.

Simon, right, a flood risk engineer in our Nottingham office, has been given the new position as deserved recognition for his success in taking on responsibility for the financial control of his area, and for continued positive client feedback and strong performance in the flood risk and drainage strategy field.

Lincolnshire event

Matt, who ordinarily works in our Derby office, gave the most correct answers and won himself some goodies.

Emoji queen

In common with many businesses, we swapped our face-to-face networking for virtual, online meetings during the coronavirus lockdown. Our first was a coffee morning organised by Pulse Consult, pictured.

Another early event was Lincoln Interact Networking back in April, which helped all Lincoln Interact members to keep in touch.

Promotions

Congratulations to BSP associate Carol Ell who won our ‘guess the emoji’ competition - organised as one of our internal competitions to keep our teams in good spirits while they beavered away at home during the coronavirus lockdown.

Carol, who is usually based in our Leicester office, won herself a nice gin and tonic set.

We’re looking forward to getting out and about when it’s safe to do so and exhibiting again at events around the East Midlands and beyond. But in the meantime, we have good memories of attending the Heritage Lincolnshire and Archaeological Project Services Construction, Property, Heritage and Trade Exhibition at Lincolnshire Showground back in February.
