As we work to fight lung cancer, the deadliest type in Nebraska, Bryan Health is using the latest lung nodule biopsy technology to ensure faster, safer diagnosis and staging. Electromagnetic navigational bronchoscopy, or robotic bronchoscopy, is an innovative tool to help diagnose hard-toreach, peripheral lung nodules. While the patient is under anesthesia, the equipment’s navigation system uses a CT scan to create a road map of the lungs, then “drives” a lighted tube far into the lung via patient airways. After reaching the nodule, the physician is able to obtain tissue samples for pathology. All this comes with lower risk of complications than a traditional bronchoscopy or needle biopsy.

“This device is the most significant advancement in bronchoscopy we’ve had in quite some time.” Ryan Martin, MD Nebraska Pulmonary Specialties Pulmonary Division Chair, Bryan Medical Center

Bryan began using this minimally invasive lung biopsy platform early in 2022, and has performed more than 70 biopsies to date. In July, the Cios Spin® was added for even greater accuracy. Bryan is the only Nebraska hospital with this mobile 3D C-arm technology. In addition to better reach and fewer complications, this method allows for sampling more than one nodule and any involved lymph nodes at one time, which was not previously possible. This allows the physician and pathologist — often in the room during the procedure — to determine the stage and spread of the cancer. “This is a tremendous benefit,” said Ryan Martin, MD, Nebraska Pulmonary Specialties. “During one procedure, we can potentially diagnose lung cancer for one or more lesions and do pathologic staging at the same time.” Learn more about robotic bronchoscopy and lung cancer screening on the Bryan Health Podcast with Dr. Martin. Lung Cancer Screening Guidelines Updated screening guidelines are now in place. These new guidelines nearly double the number of people eligible for screening. Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in Nebraska and the U.S., so early detection is key. Those recommended for a low-dose CT scan meet all the following criteria: • People 50-80 years of age • Currently smoke or have quit within the last 15 years • 20 or higher pack-year history (e.g., 2 packs a day for 10 years or 1 pack a day for 20 years) Medicare and other insurance companies cover low-dose CT scan screenings. Refer a patient through the Bryan Scheduling Center. Call: 402-481-5121 Fax: 402-481-5177
