Programs & Services

42 New Members & 137 Active Members

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important. The Young at Heart Dining and Activity Center provides the perfect place for active seniors to dine for lunch and participate in a variety of planned activities such as structured fitness; music and dance classes as well as educational and nutritional programs. Membership is $20/individual & $30/couple.

Meet Ron & Bill

The McKissick Center for Senior Wellness is a place to spend the day with friends. A place to exercise, play games and dine with others. The McKissick Center is a place many seniors call their home away from home. Take it from Ron (78), “A person who stays at home will end up in a home.”

Meet Mary Ellen

My family and I thank you both and the McKissick Center for Senior Wellness for all of your support and assistance with our mother Mary Ellen. As we began the search for new activities to expand her daily routine, all fears and apprehensions were quickly replaced with comfort and confidence as your team welcomed and embraced us into the “McKissick Family”. The daily routine of exercise and fellowship combined with a wonderful healthy meal is more than we dreamed of. Mom just loves getting up and riding the bus to exercise and see all her “friends”. Her only complaint is why can’t she go on Saturday and Sunday too! We are so grateful for you all and blessed to have this option available for our mother. Thank you all again –– The Crouch Family

Health Promotion: 260 Classes & 16 of Health and Nutrition Sessions

Two Arthritis Foundation exercise classes are offered at the center in alternating eight-week sessions – Walk with Ease and the Basic Arthritis Exercise. In addition, Zumba, line dancing, chair yoga and Wii Fit are offered as alternative physical activities.

Meet Hazel and Jerrie

Jerrie Anton-Herman is a certified exercise instructor who teaches the daily group exercise class at the McKissick Center. She prides herself in teaching classes that meet each participant’s pace and level. Exercises are done either standing or seated and incorporate a variety of weights, balls, and resistance bands. Jerrie’s goal is to increase each person’s strength, coordination and memory function. There is never a shortage of fun, laughter and sometimes… groans. Regular attendance in class has tremendously improved Hazel’s range of motion, coordination and cognitive function. Hazel said that when she saw her doctor recently that he was happy with her weight loss and her improvement in her mobility. He credits this to her regular participation in the exercise program at the McKissick Center. As an instructor, Jerrie loves watching each student improve, “I can’t tell you how much joy I receive when someone says they are walking, or like Hazel, get positive feedback from their doctor. I love my job.”

Home Delivered Meals: 300 Meals Served/day

Home-delivered meals are crucial to helping people maintain their nutritional health, feel connected in the community and continue living safely in their own homes. Each delivery provides a nutritious meal, a friendly visit and safety-check. Eligibility: A person must be homebound, be unable to prepare a nutritious meal, and not have anyone able to prepare a nutritious meal on a regular basis.

Meet Jim

Jim (age 78), was like many seniors served by Meals on Wheels. He has never needed the help of “charity,” rather he had always been on the other side. For his entire life he was active member in his church and served the community as a member of the Lions Club and Jaycees. He never once thought he would need Meals on Wheels. Yet as his Parkinson’s disease advanced, he became extremely unsteady on his feet and his family became increasingly concerned about his ability to remain at home. However, Jim remained determined to live independently. Working full-time, his son and daughter encouraged Jim to please “just try” Meals on Wheels. They knew that he would enjoy the meals and visit, and they would be relieved having someone check on him at lunch each day. Then the day came that his daughter used a term she would have never dared use when she was fourteen, “Dad, this is non-negotiable. They are coming to see you the day after Labor Day.” His reaction when she handed him the menu? “Oh yum, turkey and dressing!” Over the next three weeks, Jim looked forward to each meal and visit. He would wait, ready in his chair, with his fork, knife and napkin. During this short period, he made new friends and was reacquainted with a friend of old. He and the volunteers developed their routine, and then one Monday, the volunteer could not get Jim to the door. Concerned, she called the office so someone could be notified and check on him. His daughter left work to check on him and arrived to find her father lying on the floor and in need of emergency help. Jim had fallen Sunday night. Alone, he laid on the floor waiting for someone to help. Without the Meals on Wheels volunteer checking on him, no one would have known he needed help until that evening after work. A few more hours and his fate would have certainly been much different. Jim’s family is grateful for the “incredible service their dad received.”They were given another two and a half weeks, a priceless amount of time, for his family to gather, love one another and say their final good-byes.

A Continuam of Care

Meet Ray

Ray came regularly to the McKissick Center for lunch and sometimes early enough to sing a few songs with the group (he has a great voice).  He always had a positive attitude and cheery disposition, even on days when he didn’t feel well.  Over the past year and a half, his health has declined to the point that recently he made the decision that it was not wise for him to continue driving and coming to the McKissick Center.  He will be missed. However, thanks to the continuum of care that Meals on Wheels provides, Ray will now receive a hot meal daily, a friendly visit, and safety check as a client of the home delivered meals program. Ray will not miss a meal or the socialization he found at the center.  Maybe the drivers on his route will sing a tune or two with him.

Paving the Way Over the past thirty-eight years, Meals on Wheels has touched the lives of thousands of donors, volunteers, clients and their families. Today, the reach and impact continues to expand throughout Pickens County. Through the Pickens County Meals on Wheels’ Paving the Way Program, we are inviting the community to help us build for the future and provide hope for our disabled, elderly and homebound neighbors. For just $100 you can choose a message to be engraved on one of the 4×8 bricks paving the courtyard of the new McKissick Center for Senior Wellness. Recognize a person in your life. Honor someone special. Cherish the memory of a loved one. Celebrate an occasion. Senior Isolation and Hunger Today, people are living longer than ever before. Over 54% of Meals on Wheels clients are over the age of 80. Many never thought they would need Meals on Wheels, but now, as they face issues brought on by aging- illness, isolation and diminishing resources; they must rely on the generosity of others. It can be a big step for a person to acknowledge that they need help, but many will require assistance, like Meals on Wheels, to remain independent and in their own homes. The number of seniors in our country will grow exponentially over the coming years. Meals on Wheels is a proven public-private partnership that effectively addresses the challenges of aging by promoting health and improving quality of life for our nation’s most vulnerable seniors. By leveraging the existing Meals on Wheels network, we have the opportunity to not only keep seniors at home, but also save billions in tax dollars by keeping them out of more costly healthcare settings. When it comes to serving seniors - those young at heart, the sick and frail and/or those who find their lives turned upside down by surgery, illness, cancer, or dementia - there is no better place to turn than Meals on Wheels. We have a proven recipe for keeping our senior neighbors healthy, safe and where they want to be most… in their own homes.
