N L Goud is hard en kostbaar, een kleedje zacht en soepel. Met goud pakken mannen graag uit, een kleedje accentu eert vrouwelijke vormen. Voeg ze samen en je krijgt volgens de broers Alban (25) en Yvan (27) Murenzi een metafoor voor hoe complex relaties zijn. “Om ze te doen werken, moet je omkun nen met contrasten,” zegt zanger Yvan, die de teksten schrijft voor YellowStraps. “Maar ook in onze muziek spelen we graag met tegenstellingen,” vult gitarist en beatmaker Alban aan. “We schuiven vaak een melancholische tekst of trieste sfeer onder een ritmisch liedje. Het maakt de verschillen draaglijker.” Met de release van de ep Goldress profileren de Murenzi’s, die tegenwoordig in Vorst en Elsene wonen, zichzelf nu ook echt als duo. “Dat is minder verwarrend,” vervolgt Alban. “Vroeger waren we met z’n drieën, vieren of vijven. Zelfs met Fabien Leclerq alias Le Motel, een jeugdvriend, hebben we muziek uitgebracht. Hij heeft net als wij roots in het Waals-Brabantse Braine-l’Alleud.” Samen met zijn broer en zijn ouders vestigde Alban zich er in 2001, nadat ze hun eerste levensjaren in geboorteland Rwanda en Oeganda hadden doorgebracht. “We waren zes en acht toen we hier aankwamen en hebben ons meteen laten inspireren door Angelsaksische bands. Rond mijn twaalfde begon ik gitaar te spelen en richtten we ons eerste bandje op. Eerst speelden we covers van Arctic Monkeys en King Krule, een van onze grootste inspiratie bronnen. Onze eerste eigen track, uit 2011, was een akoestische folkpopsong.” Daarna zou hun muziek opgepikt worden door Lefto, een Elektropedia Award in de wacht slepen en via de ep’s Whirlwind romance, Mellow en Blame langzaamaan evolueren tot de lome, jazzy soulvibe die Goldress zo onweerstaanbaar maakt. Voorlopig hoogtepunt noemen de broers hun Colors-livesessie. Dat concept uit Berlijn, dat opkomende urban bands laat optreden in een gekleurde kubus, is uitgegroeid tot een erg populair muziekplatform. “We kenden het via YouTube en hebben er veel artiesten op ontdekt,” zegt Yvan. “Nooit hadden we gedacht dat we ons er zelf op zouden lanceren.” Maar kijk, hun performance van de single ‘Rose’ werd al 800.000 keer bekeken. Het heeft het duo er extra van overtuigd dat naast muziek ook uitstraling een verschil maakt. “Potentiële fans klikken je nu eenmaal sneller aan als je er cool uitziet.” Een eerste Europese headlinetournee is gepland in mei. Live laten de broers zich bijstaan door drie extra muzikanten, maar alleen elkaar zullen ze nooit lossen. “We kunnen ons niets anders indenken dan deel uit te maken van dezelfde groep,” besluit Alban. “We hebben dezelfde smaak en begrijpen elkaar blindelings. Ik vind het een raar idee dat stemmen inwisselbaar zijn in een groep, zoals bij Hooverphonic. Wij zijn niet los te koppelen. Deze broederband is voor het leven.” “WIJ ZIJN NIET

WTC, THE MOVIE

EN/ Unlike the towers of the World Trade Center in New York, those of the WTC in Brussels are still standing. But that’s all there is to say about them. In 1970, an entire neighbourhood was demolished to build Brussels’s “Little Manhattan”, only a fraction of which was actually completed, which then stood empty for a long time. From the 25 th floor of WTC1, Lietje Bauwens and Wouter De Raeve made the fiction film WTC A Love Story – 431 about the positive and negative urban developments of the area. It was based on talks with architects and politicians, residents and property developers. ( M B )

DE GETIJDEN VAN DE ZIEL

NL/ Ornette Coleman zei hem tijdens een improsessie in zijn New Yorkse appartement ooit dat zijn bas geweldig klonk, en toch speelt de in Brussel gestrande Fred Jacques gedienstig bij Mark Lanegan en Dans Dans. Als Lyenn brengt hij introspectieve artrock die zijn nomadische, zoekende ziel verraadt. Ook op het album Adrift, dat werd opgenomen in IJsland, laat hij zich instinctief leiden door de getijden. Zijn falset graaft weifelend maar diep. Je zou kunnen besluiten dat zijn filmische, vaak minimaal gehouden muziek op drift is en spoken najaagt. Wide Awake Coffee

Fed up of mass-produced coffee with no soul, no taste, and no conscience? Together with Senina Cojocari, Rutger Callewier is restoring glory to this raw material. — MICHEL VERLINDEN

What is the story behind Wide Awake Coffee? I was working in a completely different area before: transport. In 2015, I went to live in New York for two years. In that city, you find a lot of bad coffee, but there is also a real appetite for what is now called “specialty coffee” which is coffee of the highest grade. Once you taste it, it’s impossible go back. I was so convinced, I wanted to learn more about it when I returned to Belgium. I signed up for a barista training course in London. That’s where I met Senina, who had a real skill for roasting. I wanted to open a place and she wanted to be closer to her family in Brussels, so we began our adventure with Wide Awake Coffee, which is both a shop for individual customers and a supplier to Horeca.

What distinguishes you from other coffee shops? Specialty coffee is a very complex domain in which things are difficult to understand if you don’t possess the keys. Our goal is to make it accessible to everyone. In order to point people in the direction of coffee that is good and fair, because we take care to pay the right price to the producers, we have designed a selection that is structured according to the main flavour axes of coffee. If you like classic coffee, with chocolate and caramel flavours, you should check out the “Moon Safari” range. If you prefer fruit, notes of cherry or strawberry, choose “Strawberry Fields”.

Your place is right next to MOK, a place that occupies the same niche. Aren’t you in danger of treading on each other’s toes? Not at all. I really like MOK. I think it’s more like we are in the same camp. We are both striving against mass-produced coffee, a mediocre product that contributes to the world’s problems. Rather than working with high-quality green coffee, our strength is that we apply an extremely rigorous roasting process.
