NL Van de geflopte superslechterikenfilm Suicide squad hebben we twee dingen onthouden. Jared Leto was een behoorlijk onnozele Joker, en Margot Robbie redde de meubelen als Harley Quinn, het geschifte vriendinnetje van de bekendste Batman-schurk. Met die tweede stelling zijn veel fans het eens. De actrice uit The wolf of Wall Street, I, Tonya en Bombshell bleek zich enorm geamuseerd te hebben met de rol van gevaarlijke, zotte punkster die kickt op geweld en de schreeuwerigste kermiskleren die je kan vinden. Omdat de superhel denfabrieken eindelijk inzien dat ze te lang hebben nagelaten om ook vrouwelijke helden en schurken het zoeklicht te gunnen, lag de weg open voor een solo van Harley Quinn. De volledige titel – Birds of prey: and the fantabulous emancipation of one Harley Quinn – verraadt al een beetje dat ze leert op eigen benen te staan. Ook nevenpersona ges Black Canary, Huntress, Renee Montoya en Cassandra Cain emanciperen, maar verwacht geen feministisch traktaat. Regisseur Cathy Yan trekt de funkaart en kiest zonder aarzeling voor car toonesk geweld, snoepkleuren en leuke actiescènes. Birds of prey overschaduwt Suicide squad vlotjes. ( N R )

F R Le titre complet – Birds of prey : and the fantabulous emancipation of one Harley Quinn – laisse entendre que la super-vilaine de Suicide Squad (Margot Robbie en punkette déjantée) prend son indépendance. Des personnages secondaires comme Black Canary et Cassandra Cain s’émancipent aussi, mais ne vous attendez pas à un plaidoyer féministe. La réalisatrice Cathy Yan opte résolument pour la violence cartoonesque, les couleurs rose bonbon et l’action. Birds of prey vole un peu plus haut que Suicide Squad.

E N The complete title – Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn – betrays that the supervillain from Suicide Squad (Margot Robbie as a crazy punk who loves violence) is learning to stand on her own two feet. The secondary characters like Black Canary and Cassandra Cain are emancipatory, but don’t expect a feminist tract. Director Cathy Yan doesn’t hesitate to give us cartoonish violence, vibrant colours, and fun action sequences. Birds of Prey easily overshadows Suicide Squad.

FR Ce n’est pas un secret qu’une histoire vraie ne se métamorphose pas automatiquement en un film fort. C’est pourtant l’erreur qui a été commise ici. Avec une confiance excessive dans son style lisse et impersonnel et dans la compétence de ses acteurs expérimentés, le réalisateur Gavin Hood (Rendition, Eye in the sky) s’attache principale ment à raconter de la façon la plus simple possible un scandale complexe. Heureusement, la star de cinéma britannique Keira Knightley n’a pas perdu de vue comment rendre un personnage captivant grâce au sens des nuances. Elle prête ses hautes pom mettes à la lanceuse d’alerte Katharine Gun. Au début de ce siècle, elle travaille comme traductrice dans le centre d’écoute des services secrets britanniques. Elle fournit à l’excellent journal hebdomadaire The Observer une note dans laquelle l’Amérique demande aux Britanniques de mettre sur écoute les membres du Conseil de sécurité afin de faire pression sur eux par la suite pour qu’ils approuvent l’invasion américano-britannique injustifiée de l’Irak. Gun, son mari, et le journal sont dans le collimateur des espions et des autorités mystificatrices. Le plus grand mérite de ce film est de nous rappeler cette histoire peu glorieuse. ( N R )

N L Keira Knightley speelt in Official secrets klokkenluidster Katharine Gun, die als vertaalster in het afluistercentrum van de Britse geheime dienst naar buiten bracht hoe Amerika de Britten vroeg leden van de Veiligheidsraad af te luisteren, om ze nadien onder druk te kunnen zetten om de Amerikaans-Britse invasie van Irak goed te keuren. De groot ste verdienste van de film is dat hij die geschiedenis in herinnering brengt, want regisseur Gavin Hood wil een complex schandaal helaas zo eenvoudig mogelijk navertellen.

E N In Official Secrets, Keira Knightley plays the whistle-blower Katharine Gun, who as a translator in the wiretapping division of the British secret service exposed how America asked the British to eavesdrop on members of the Security Council so that they could pressure them into supporting the American-British invasion of Iraq. The film’s greatest merit is that it reminds us of that history because unfortunately, director Gavin Hood seeks to tell the story of the complex scandal in the simplest possible way.
