Reizen voor thuisblijvers NL/ The New Yorker blijft inspireren. Een goed
jaar geleden huldigde Seed Factory het gerenommeerde Amerikaanse weekblad al eens met The Brusseler, een tentoonstelling waarvoor binnen- en buitenlandse illustratoren covers ontwierpen voor een fictieve evenknie van het magazine. En vandaag cureert David Merveille, een van de toen deelnemende illustratoren, met The Traveler een soortgelijk eerbetoon. Elk van de covers, ontworpen door vijftig illustratoren – onder wie: Ever Meulen, Tom Schamp, Rébecca Dautremer, Loustal, Brecht Vandenbroucke en Manara – doet de zomerse thuisblijvers onder ons dromen van andere oorden. Rêves d’Eldorado
FR/ Quand Albrecht Dürer visite Bruxelles en 1520, il est reçu par Charles Quint, en son palais du Coudenberg. L’empereur montre à l’artiste les objets et trésors de l’Empire Aztèque que lui a envoyés le conquistador Hernán Cortés. Parures du plumes, bijoux, animaux naturalisés, autant de pièces étranges et jamais vues de ce côté-ci de l’océan. Ces objets ont depuis bien longtemps disparu. Dans les vestiges souterrains de l’ancien palais, une exposition retrace le contexte historique de cette rencontre extraordinaire. Avec ses installations poétiques, mystérieuses et sensorielles, l’artiste Sabrina Montiel-Soto évoque le choc culturel entre ces deux mondes. (GB)

Voorbij de witte vlakte NL/ Een fotograaf keert terug uit Spitsbergen en
neemt mee: beelden van ijsberen, heroïsche expeditiereizigers en uitgestrekte witte vlaktes. Of zo wil het hardnekkige cliché toch. De Brusselse Catherine Lemblé ziet het anders. Haar trips naar de archipel in de Noordelijke IJszee vloeien bij Contretype uit in een tentoonstelling die net die vooroordelen en clichés mijdt. In de reeks Only barely still verlegt ze de focus naar de ondervertegenwoordigde verhalen van vrouwen in onherbergzame gebieden – van een vrouwelijke mecanicien tot een hippe, jonge muziekliefhebster – en boort zo een andere, ecofeministische collectieve verbeelding aan. FR/ Le pouvoir de fascination pour l’Egypte pharaonique se perpétue de génération en génération. Toutankhamon, l’enfant roi dont la tombe intacte fut découverte dans la Vallée des Rois par Howard Carter en 1922, symbolise à lui seul les mystères et les fastes de cette civilisation. Après une tournée triomphale sur la planète, King Tut fait halte à Bruxelles. Plus de 1 000 objets scrupuleusement reproduits, des décors impressionnants, dont une reconstitution de la chambre funéraire telle qu’elle fut découverte par l’archéologue anglais, et de riches développements multimédia nous ramèneront au bord du Nil, il y a plus de trois millénaires.

Work hard, play hard EN/ Since the late 1990s, the anonymous
Parisian street-art legend Invader has built up a gigantic and completely unique body of work. He has to date personally invaded 80 cities around the world – from Bangkok to Miami and from Mombasa to Potosi – with a whopping 4,056 pixelated Space Invaders. One of those iconic ceramic mosaics based on popular 8-bit video games even returned to space with the ISS, while another is spending its time in the deep sea. At the MIMA, Invader exhibits another, equally playful aspect of his oeuvre: his 20-year-old studio practice of transforming Rubik’s Cubes into works that pay homage to art history’s masterpieces or depict notorious bad guys. Art lovers and piggy banks EN/ Half a century of assembling works of art
has turned the collection of the National Bank of Belgium into a comprehensive 2,000-piece survey of contemporary art. The 50th anniversary of that collection is celebrated with a free exhibition in the majestic ticket hall, for which the Banco de España has delved into its collection too. Through the work of 43 contemporary artists such as Wolfgang Tillmans, Helena Almeida, Candida Höfer and Michaël Borremans, “(Un)common Values” shows how art reflects society and embraces the world we live in.
