“Als fotograaf ben ik gevoelig voor sfeer en licht. Voor deze reeks laat ik me inspireren door het gebrek aan zonlicht in Brussel. Ik ga op zoek naar sfeervolle locaties waar ik een verhaal uit kan puren en laat ze op me inwerken terwijl ik er enkele belangrijke inwoners portretteer, zoals hier Marc Didden, de Brusselaar der Brusselaars. De straatlantaarn die niet werkt, is een mooie metafoor voor het huidige Brussel. Zie de reeks als een soort liefdesverklaring aan die grauwe, rauwe, maar warme stad die me blijft verrassen en die ik blijf (her)ontdekken.” NL

Geert De Taeye (België, 1980) maakt zowel commercieel als persoonlijk werk. Zijn sfeervolle beelden vloeien voort uit een praktijk waarbij hij wat hij vastlegt heruitvindt en manipuleert en zo de waarheid onder een verleidelijk laagje ironie en empathie legt.

The alt-J indie rockers met one another when they were studying English literature and Fine Arts at Leeds University. We were reminded again by the short film accompanying “Pleader”, the fourth single off Relaxer. Since their celebrated debut An Awesome Wave was released ten years ago, they have remained the brightest stars on the firmament. We couldn’t hold back our tears when we watched the epic footage that director Isaiah Seret shot for the song inspired by Richard Llewellyn’s How Green Was My Valley, about a small mining community in Wales. His heart-rending love story, in which pastoral folk is combined with great emotions, a boys’ choir with the countryside, and tragedy with euphoria, brings the contrasts sharply into focus: either you think this is pompous twaddle or you bought your tickets for the concert at Vorst Nationaal/Forest National ages ago.

De pop-upzomerbar Bar Eliza zorgt nu ook ’s winters voor warmte in de schaduw van de basiliek van Koekelberg. Tijdens het Winterfeest zorgen muzikanten uit alle windstreken drie dagen lang voor muzikaal genot. Multi-instrumentalist Tcha Limberger laat Eliza dansen op zigeunermuziek, Emeline Tout Court brengt ‘accordeoneske’ verhalen met punkattitude, Mamadou Dramé voorziet het Elisabethpark van een scheut Senegal, sopraan Lieve Rodiers laat zelfs de vogels stil worden, en de Tunesisch-Belgische furie Ghalia Benali sluit af. Er staat ook circus op het programma: het vurige Cie Ça Sent le Roussi doet die dekselse januaridepressie wegsmelten als sneeuw voor de zon. NL

Je hebt de Brusselse illustrator Pieter Fannes misschien al aan het werk gezien op Gent Jazz of Jazz Middelheim. Op het Brussels Jazz Festival lanceert hij samen met zijn Franse collega Yann Bagot Live. Jazzconcerten op papier, een bij Bries uitgegeven bundel van meer dan 200 jazztekeningen. Onder de noemer The sleep of reason laat het duo vervolgens de potloden swingen op improvisaties van de Gents-Nederlandse (maar in Brussel opgegroeide) alleskunner Fulco Ottervanger. Tijdens het festival stellen de twee tekenaars hun werk ook tentoon in Flagey en illustreren ze er dagelijks de concerten. De resultaten kan je achteraf gewoon mee naar huis nemen.

A piano is not a piano. Before you think that we’ve been influenced by yet another New Year’s spectacle: these are not our words, but those of the renowned, 75-year-old pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim. Or wait, perhaps not literally. The fact is that the development of what we call a “piano” is still ongoing. You can witness it for yourself at this concert featuring “the unique Barenboim-Maene” piano, a new instrument that is the result of innumerable hours of searching and struggling, listening and try-outs. It looks no different from the outside, but the inside of the instrument is unrecognisable. Debussy’s distinctly rich tonal palette is the ideal programme for Barenboim’s sound fetishism. EN

Même sans avoir jamais mis les pieds en Iran, les amoureux du septième art entretiennent une relation privilégiée avec ce territoire du Moyen-Orient à travers son cinéma indépendant de qualité, acclamé dans les plus grands festivals. Alors que depuis deux semaines, le pays est secoué par une puissante vague de protestations, le Cinéma Galeries consacre son festival L’Heure d’Hiver à sa capitale: Téhéran. Au programme, les demi-dieux Jafar Panahi (Taxi Téhéran), passé maître suprême du cinéma clandestin, le très lucide conseiller conjugal de la société iranienne Asghar Farhadi (Une séparation), et le regretté poète Abbas Kiarostami (Le goût de la cerise). Sans oublier les autres réalisateurs incontournables - et ils et elles sont nombreux(ses) – qui, malgré la censure et les contraintes économiques, ne se privent pas de poser leur regard pénétrant sur la société persane et ses paradoxes. k miste iets als ik naar een rockgroep ging kijken. Het podium is vaak een coiffeusesalon. Elke vorm van anarchie en revolte lijkt verdwenen. Soms vraag ik me ook af waarom een gitarist zijn gitaar stemt, want alles staat toch op tape. Op rockfestivals kan je tegenwoordig zelfs een chalet huren en in een viersterrenrestaurant eten. Vroeger wasten festivalgangers zich in de rivier… Zegt een ouwe zak. Dat weet ik ook wel.” Maar de verontwaardiging is niet gespeeld, en daarom versmolt Arno Hintjens, 67 ondertussen, Tjens Couter en TC Matic, de bands waarmee hij in de jaren 1970 en 1980 het hoofd boven het maaiveld stak en de Belgische rock een smoel gaf, tot Tjens Matic. “Ik wilde iets puurs doen, iets impulsiefs, met alleen bas, drums, gitaar en zang, zonder tapes. Ik dacht: wat als ik de rauwe nummers van die bands en andere die daarbij aansluiten (‘Meet the freaks’ van Arno & The Subrovnicks, ‘No job, no rock’ van Charles & the White Trash European Blues Connection) nu eens breng met muzikanten van nu? Wat als ik mezelf zou

coveren?” Tussen zijn dagelijkse kopje kwaliteitsthee en glas Cola Zero in zijn stambrasserie Le Paon Royal wil hij kwijt dat rockmuziek normaal helemaal niet conservatief is. “Ook aan mezelf. Rock kwam van de straat, was tegen een systeem. Dat voel je nu niet meer, en dat is spijtig in een wereld die nog veel conservatiever is dan vroeger. Een muppet als Donald Trump zou in de jaren 1970 nooit verkozen zijn geweest tot Amerikaans president. En heb je gezien wie in actie schoot? Allemaal oude zakken: Neil Young, die niet meer wilde dat Trump zijn muziek gebruikte, R.E.M., Led Zeppelin…” Hoewel Tjens Matic in de eerste plaats als livegroep in het leven is geroepen, heeft Arno met zijn trio ‘jonge’ honden – gitarist Bruno Fevery, bassist Mirko Banovic en drummer Laurens Smagghe – toch een nieuwe track opgenomen. De inmiddels op 7” vinyl verschenen single ‘Middle finger’ bevat in de eerste strofe een sneer naar de politiek, in de tweede een naar de “flip flop pop stars” om in de derde, als vanouds, bij zichzelf uit te komen. Ook de hoes is vintage Arno. “Een zelfgemaakte belgitu-

de,” klinkt het. “De vingers zijn zwarte mosselen, de letters gele frieten, en de achtergrond rode servetten.” Met een liveversie van ‘Being somebody else’ – een TC Matic-oudje en de vaste Tjens Matic-setopener – op de B-kant is er ook een duidelijk advies aan de jongere generatie. “Putting yourself into a role / [...] / You never be in,” klinkt nu even vitaal als op Choco in 1983. “Ook dit zeg ik tegen mezelf, want iemand anders willen zijn, is werken. Je kan dus maar beter jezelf zijn. Maar dan moet je ook aanvaarden dat een koe melk geeft en geen champagne.”

PEPE DODO Lange tijd was het trouwens niet voor iedereen even duidelijk of Arno nu een rolletje neerzette of niet. “Veel mensen dachten dat ik aan de dope was, terwijl ik zelfs nooit dronk voor een optreden. Maar ik ben wel verslaafd aan de adrenaline die vrijkomt bij een concert. Dat is een drug die de mens zelf creëert en energie geeft. Ik heb het al meegemaakt dat ik ziek was voor een optreden, en erna genezen. Een optreden kan bij mij ook een kater wegspoelen. Heel bizar is dat. Eigenlijk is niet op tournee zijn veel gevaarlijker voor mij. Zonder die live adrenaline ben ik een fokking nobody. Andere mensen gaan joggen, ik moet op een podium kunnen staan. Muziek is mijn maîtresse en mijn therapie. Ik zal nooit op pensioen gaan… maar ik heb ook nooit gewerkt. Mijn tourbus is mijn tweede living. Wat ik echt niet graag doe, is na een Belgisch optreden naar huis gaan terwijl ik op tournee ben, ook al ben ik tijdens zo’n tournee altijd de eerste die naar bed gaat. Ik ben pepe dodo.” (Lacht)

Zijn oude platen beleven een kleine renaissance sinds ze de voorbije jaren opnieuw (op vinyl) zijn uitgebracht door Starman Records. “Het grote voordeel daarvan was dat ik ze eindelijk ook in mijn collectie heb,” klinkt het grimassend. Weinigen weten dat Arno indertijd werd ingelijfd bij de Oostendse bluesrockband Freckleface als mondharmonica– speler. “Op mijn vijftiende had mijn leraar zedenleer me de blues leren kennen. ‘Arno,’ zei hij, ‘zonder deze gasten bestond er geen jazz en rock–’n-roll. Toen ben ik mondharmonica beginnen te spelen in de stijl van Sonny Boy Williamson. Ik ben pas beginnen te zingen toen de zanger van Freckleface me dat vroeg.” Zo schopte hij het daarna wel tot frontman van Tjens Couter, “maar mijn frank is pas echt gevallen tijdens een reis naar de States eind jaren 1970. Daar besefte ik dat ik geen Amerikaanse, maar een Europese bluesman was. Terug thuis heb ik meteen TC Matic opgericht.” En ook al heeft zijn stem sindsdien serieus aan hoogte ingeboet, tijdens de huidige concerten komt die rauwe blueskorrel meer dan ooit van pas. “Vroeger was ik een verstokte roker. Dat laat zijn sporen na, ook al ben ik intussen al tien jaar gestopt.” “Ach, die jonge gasten studeren voor beroepen die binnen vijf jaar niet meer bestaan,” is hij plots mild voor de huidige generatie. “Alles verandert zo snel, en er is vast iets aan het opborrelen in de underground. Na een brave periode, volgt steeds een tijdperk van rebellie. En weet je, die hiphop die nu ook hier in Brussel aan een opstoot bezig is, noemden ze vroeger ook gewoon talkin’ blues.”

Avec Tjens Matic, Arno et trois plus jeunes collaborateurs font un doigt d’honneur au conservatisme ambiant du rock’n’roll. L’antidote : le répertoire cru avec lequel il a secoué le rock belge dans les années septante et quatre-vingt.

hate repeating myself and selling myself,” Tony Allen tells us decisively from Paris, where he has lived for years. He was born in Lagos in 1940 of a Ghanaian mother and Nigerian father. “Stagnation is out of the question. I want to evolve.” This “never flagging, constantly looking ahead” attitude has made Allen the cool, ingenious drummer that he still is at 77 years old, but it also means he is a very difficult conversationalist. At the end of our attempt to chat he refers us to the book he published in 2013: Tony Allen. An Autobiography of the Master Drummer of Afrobeat. “I wrote everything down in there so that I wouldn’t have to talk about it anymore.” Of course, Allen hasn’t actually had to sell himself for years. Brian Eno once described him as one of the three drummers who really matter, and Damon Albarn, with whom he has launched several collaborative projects over the past ten years, sang on Blur’s “Music Is My Radar” that it was Tony who made him dance. These are just two of the many Western musicians who would have given their right arm over the past few decades for the innovative polyrhythmic grooves produced by the drum legend, who as the band leader of the African superstar Fela Kuti laid the foundations

A journey to jazz and beyond Beside a number of icons like Archie Shepp, Tony Allen, and Enrico Rava, the fourth edition of the Brussels Jazz Festival is bringing a cross-section of jazz and its bastard brood, step-children, and distant cousins to Brussels for ten days. Take the classically trained pianists Heleen Van Haegenborgh & Christian Mendoza (12/1, 12/30), for example. At lunchtime, they will present their debut Copper. Van Haegenborgh is best-known for her intriguing explorations on the piano. Side by side with Mendoza, she weaves together jazz and contemporary classical music. Kurtág’s transcriptions of Bach for four hands form the foundation of an adventurous, minimalist audio-visual show. A day later, the trendy British jazz/crossover scene will descend on Brussels. With Soweto Kinch, Portico Quartet and Binker & Moses (13/1, 19.30), the programme features an impressive triple bill. Kinch is an alto saxophonist and rapper, and thus blends the two hippest genres of the moment. He is coming to present his new album Nonagram, and because he has been the presenter of the BBC Radio 3 programme

of Afrobeat. Rooted in the percussive traditions of the Yoruba people and the Ghanaian highlife jazz style, which blended traditional melodies and rhythms with Western instruments, that foundation could only evolve into a genuine genre thanks to Allen’s innovative drum technique, using all four limbs to create different rhythmic patterns simultaneously. It was mainly fellow drummers who came from

Jazz Now since last year, he is also an ideal guest for an artist talk. Along with his colleague Binker Golding, who is coming to present Journey to the Mountain of Forever with drummer Moses Boyd, he will undoubtedly also talk about the success of Portico Quartet, one of the first British bands among the rising stars that successfully combine jazz and electronica. Their most recent release is very appropriately entitled Art in the Age of Automation. The fact the Brussels Philharmonic regularly also flirts with jazz must be common knowledge by now. For their Jazz Meets Symphonic series, they have forged an alliance with the renowned American pianist and composer Uri Caine (18/1, 21.00). Together, they have arranged Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations as jazz. Two Belgian ensembles will be celebrating at the festival. With his eye on West Africa, the Brussels-based trumpet player Laurent Blondiau founded the Mâäk Collective twenty years ago. There will be a festive kick-off to the anniversary year with concerts by both the 16-member big band MikMâäk and FIVE, which reverts to the musicians who were the artistic core of the collective between 2001 and 2008 (16/1, 20.15). Drummer Lander Gyselinck is not only having a party with LABtrio (19/1, 19.30) for their tenth anniversary, he’s also collaborating

across the globe to see with their own eyes and ears how he did it.

MY WAY “It’s just my way,” he says about it now. “I can’t explain how I play. Anyone who wants to know what I sound like should just buy my records or come and see me live.” To summarize very briefly, Allen’s polyrhythmic technique consists of him using the hi-hat pedal on his drums much more than his colleagues, so that all his limbs move constantly. “It requires impressive timing,” the Brussels jazz musician Nathan Daems, a big fan of Allen and African rhythms, once told us. “He only needs one drum set to do what others would need three of four percussionists to do, and he never sounds any less laidback.” Allen has approached his current Art Blakey tribute in the same way. He became fascinated by the bebop pioneer’s drum style in the 1960s. The cross-fertilization between Africa and America would later become even more prominent during a long stay in the US with Fela Kuti’s then band Koola Lobitos. “But I don’t sound like Blakey, I’m playing him my way. I have my own style to expose. Simple.” This was evident on last year’s mini-album, on

with Sinister Sister – with whom he reconstructed the work of Frank Zappa – to explore the heritage of Hungarian composer Béla Bartók (18/1, 19.30), after which he will take up his post at the turntables to showcase some of the genre’s other bastardizing qualities.

TONY, NOT FELA This has characterized Allen’s whole career. Since he broke from Kuti forty years ago to become a bandleader himself, he has collaborated with the most diverse musicians from a wide range of genres, from reggae or dub to rock, from hip hop or house to techno, and from Jimmy Cliff or Grace Jones to Moodymann. “If Jeff Mills calls me because he wants to make music with me, I do it. I don’t want to play the same style all the time, like the artists on the charts. I most enjoy working with other people. It always offers new opportunities. Each new configuration means you can express yourself in a different way.” Where does this openness come from? “I didn’t create myself. God did. So there’s no point asking me. I don’t do it for myself in any case. Ultimately, the audience decides.” In contrast to Kuti, politics has never been a motive. “I’m not a revolutionary. I am Tony, not Fela. My music is not militant. It is not the soundtrack to one or another protest movement.” He did recently share an article on his Facebook page about the horrifying news that Nigerian migrants were being sold as slaves in Libya. But here too, he prefers not to go into it: “I have nothing to say about things that anybody can watch on CNN. It is not my place to react to such things. Fela always reacted to shit like that. I am not up to that. I play music, and my main concern is not to become repetitive. Simple as that.” Does this have repercussions on the music he listens to himself ? “There is nothing specific. If I want to listen to something, I prefer it to be something that doesn’t exist yet. You see? I’m only interested in what’s next.”

MORE JAZZ HOPPING IN JANUARY? In January, Flagey will by no means be the only place to enjoy a great jazz concert in Brussels. In keeping with their annual traditions, both the River Jazz Festival and Djangofolllies are showcasing various locations and home-grown jazz that isn’t just about navel-gazing. The highlights of the third edition of River Jazz are saxophonist and flautist Steve Houben, who seems to have found a new elan with his quartet (20/1, 18.00, Jazz Station), and accordionist Tuur Florizoone who will perform at no fewer than three concert locations with as many projects on the last evening (27/1, 18.00, Jazz Station, 20.00, Senghor & 22.00, Marni). By that point, Sym saxophonist Nicolas Kummert will have reunited with guitarist Hervé Samb (13/1, 18.00, Jazz Station) and Random House by saxophonist Thomas Champagne will have premièred (18/1, 20.30, Jazz Station). Guillaume Vierset, the guitarist of Champagne’s quartet, is likewise coming to present new music with LG Jazz Collective (19/1, 20.30, Senghor). Along with his excellent rhythm tandem of Antoine Pierre/Félix Zurstrassen, three winds, and a pianist, his compositions highlight the suppleness of the Brussels scene. Portuguese singer Magda Mendes and fellow pianists Nathalie Loriers and Ivan Paduart will appear at the 50th

birthday party for Anne Wolf (23/1, 20.00, Marni). Guitarist Marc Ribot (24/1, 20.30, Senghor) and bassist Or Bareket (25/1, 20.30, Jazz Station) will be flying in from New York to give the Brussels-coloured programme some international cachet. The opener of River Jazz, leading French accordionist Richard Galliano (12/1, 20.00, Marni), could just as well have performed at Djangofolllies with his new musette. The festival that is reinvigorating the gipsy swing of Django Reinhardt for the 24th time this year will take place at no fewer than 31 locations, including five in Brussels. Last year, the film Django gave the Belgian-born guitar genius even more global appeal. An extra screening (14/1, 18.00, Senghor) offers festival participants the ideal chance to be whisked away on a lyrical and swinging voyage of discovery in the company of the Samson Schmitt Trio (14/1, 20.30, Riches-Claires), the Lollo Meier Sextet (19/1, 12.30, Flagey), and the Maurizio Geri Swingtet (25/1, 20.30, La Tentation).

which Allen blended a few of Blakey’s Jazz Messengers classics with his own Afrobeat, and later also on The Source, an album of original material that echoed other American jazz greats like Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis. In the meantime, Allen and his French quartet had set out on a tribute tour. Asked about the biggest challenge in interpreting the work of his bebop hero, he replies slightly indignantly that it wasn’t challenging at all. “I just decided to make a jazz album, and as with all my other projects, I did it in my own way. No big deal. I don’t care about pleasing an idol or anything like that. I played Afrobeat, I played electro, and now I’m playing jazz. It is not the standard American jazz that everyone knows, but my own Afrobeat jazz. I did record everything analogue and live, in the best Blue Note tradition. Playing all together in the same space still sounds the best and the most direct. Apart from that, I am not looking to the past but to the future. I absolutely hate getting stuck in a rut. Repeating yourself is boring. As soon as I get tired of something, I stop doing it.”

e manque d’amour et d’affection est un mal universel qui remonte aux origines de l’humanité. Mais qu’en est-il à l'ère 2.0 ? Après Ell(e)s, un kaléidoscope anticonformiste des identités féminines, coup de cœur du Prix de la Critique en 2014 (meilleur auteur et meilleur espoir féminin), la Montoise d'origine flamande revient à l’écriture et à la mise en scène avec Do you wanna play with me?, une déclinaison des pratiques virtuelles sur fond de crise familiale. Entre online dating, jeu de rôle et porno: mère, fils et fille semblent avoir renoncé à trouver l’épanouissement dans le réel. Au fil de ce voyage confrontant imprégné par l'univers futuriste japonais, Sylvie Landuyt en appelle subtilement et sans moralisation aucune, à retisser les liens qui nous unissent ici-bas. Voilà qui ne laissera pas indifférents les accros à notre smartphone que nous sommes.

Qu’est-ce qui a déclenché chez vous le besoin de parler de l’addiction au virtuel? SYLVIE LANDUYT : Quand je travaille

sur un nouveau spectacle, ça démarre toujours sur quelque chose qui m’est proche, une urgence dans laquelle je m’inscris. Et donc là je me retrouve avec une adolescente, ma fille, complètement accro à son téléphone. Un jour, je la vois pleurer très fort et je finis par comprendre qu’elle est manipulée émotionnellement par une personne qu’elle n’a même jamais vue. Alors je me demande, en tant que maman, comment faire pour lui donner des armes pour se protéger que moi-même que je ne maîtrise pas. Et c’est comme ça que je commence à écrire une histoire. Ce ne sont pas des solutions mais un constat de société. Je veux qu’on délie la parole, qu’on en parle avec le public.

Qu’est-ce qui vous a marqué dans ces échange ? LANDUYT : Les jeunes adultes

n’avaient pas de problème à parler de pornographie avec moi. J’ai le sentiment que le fait d’être face à un metteur en scène, ayant écrit un texte à ce sujet, les mettait en confiance. Parce que je comprenais leur univers, ou du moins j’essayais. Ce qui m’a surpris c’est que bien souvent les adultes n’essayent pas de comprendre, ils coupent court à la conversation. Leur manière d’accompagner et d’éduquer leur enfant est de les priver d’un outil mais non pas de les aider à mieux l’utiliser.

Prendre le temps, s’asseoir ensemble et regarder. Un peu comme au théâtre finalement ? LANDUYT :Tout à fait (rires). C’est

très drôle parce qu’il y a aussi un parallèle à faire avec les jeux virtuels. En tant que metteur en scène, je raconte des histoires pour élargir mes connaissances et c’est exactement ce que les jeunes font en RPG (Role Playing Game, ndlr), c’est très positif. Il existe aujourd’hui des auditoires qui utilisent des applications permettant d’entrer en interaction avec le prof dans une salle énorme.

Le virtuel suscite donc aussi beaucoup d’espoir ? LANDUYT : En effet, on l’a vu avec

les Printemps arabes.

Avec la campagne #meetoo également ? LANDUYT : Oui, mais je pense qu’il

ne faut pas aller trop loin. Ça peut faire bouger les choses mais à un moment donné, il faut essayer de les contenir aussi. Balancer des gens sur le net sans faire de démarches – ou avoir tenté d’en faire – dans le réel n’est pas salutaire. Cette campagne peut être un élan mais doit avoir son

pendant concret dans le réel.

Votre spectacle fait place à une part d'anticipation à travers un quatrième personnage, celui d'une intelligence artificielle. LANDUYT : Anticipation, oui et non

parce qu’on y est déjà. Dans mon histoire, même l’intelligence artificielle a besoin qu’on passe du temps avec elle, comme un être humain, pour évoluer. La pièce est très influencée par un voyage que j’ai effectué au Japon. Je voyais tous ces concerts de musiciens virtuels projetés sous la forme d’hologrammes. C’était quelque chose d’extrêmement choquant pour moi de voir que l’on pouvait être touché par un personnage virtuel. La série d’anticipation britannique Black Mirror m’a également inspirée.

gés étaient unanimes, ils ont tous passé du temps à ça. Ils savent comment s’y prendre techniquement sans même avoir déjà fait l’amour nécessairement, ce qui ne signifie pas qu’ils savent comment aimer. Pour moi, les questions d’addiction au virtuel sont toujours liées à un manque d’amour. Il faut reconstruire des liens entre nous, prendre du temps avec nos enfants. Asseyons-nous, parlons, regardons ensemble comment on peut s’apprendre des choses mutuellement.

LANDUYT : Très important. C’est

étrange parce que même dans mon cas, née de parents flamands, ayant grandi à Mons et ayant fait des études de théâtre, ce n’est que très tard que j’ai pris connaissance du théâtre flamand. Alors qu’aujourd’hui tout le monde a envie d’être reconnu en Flandre en tant qu’artiste francophone. Parce qu’il y a dans le théâtre néerlandophone quelque chose de très libre et de contemporain, et à la fois de très marqué au niveau du rapport à la religion et à la terre. Je ressens vraiment chez moi un mélange des influences. J'ai toujours eu cette envie de travailler des deux côtés.

On “4:44”, rap hero Jay-Z used Hannah Williams’s raw, soulful voice to beg his wife Beyoncé for forgiveness for his extramarital adventures. It’s high time we discovered the rest of the repertoire by this colourful singer from Winchester, England. — TOM PEETERS

annah Williams was extremely curious on the morning of 30 June 2016, when Jay-Z released his new album 4:44. Until that point, she had had to keep silent about the fact that the American rapper had asked her permission to use the title track of her latest album Late Nights & Heartbreak. It finally happened at 5 o’clock British time. “Via a YouTube link of a listening party in Australia, I got to hear the album along with the rest of the world,” she says. “I was shocked. [Laughs] Samples usually only use a snippet of the original song, and the end result is often distorted and overproduced. But in this case, I heard my voice very clearly. It was authentic and undistorted, and it just continued.”

“It was a case of pure serendipity that Jay-Z coincidentally discovered my track” The fact that her favourite song from the album that she released in 2016 with her regular band The Affirmations (the late Sharon Jones had already been a fan for ages) was now getting global attention, only made her astonishment all the greater. And Jay-Z had used her song as an apology track for Beyoncé. “I had no idea about their marital problems because I don’t read gossip magazines. As a mother, singer, and director of the Winchester University Choir, I have no time for them. But it did explain why Jay-Z wanted to talk about the lyrics when he phoned me. It is about the regret that you feel when you are in a relationship but can’t manage to keep the fire burning all the time. In fact, it was a case of pure serendipity that Jay-Z coincidentally discovered my track. He had asked his producer to look for music by contemporary artists

with a penchant for his musical heroes – Otis Redding, Etta James, Bill Withers, etc. – and with lyrics about things he never wrote about, like infidelity.” There’s a good chance that the song will win the Grammy Award for Song of the Year. “I will be giving my first concerts in Japan during the Grammys”, Williams says. “The attention that we’re getting thanks to the Jay-Z sample is incredible, but it would be really amazing to perform the song together. Fingers crossed!” But on the eve of her European tour, she has no time to rest on her laurels. “We are working tirelessly on new material. The new album will be a wicked mixture of the classic soul, funk rock and psychedelic aspects that we had in our previous records. There’s been absolutely no complacency. People may be thinking: chill out, girl. But now is when things really start.” The singer who was once described by a colleague as a blend of Nina Simone and Janis Joplin and who started her career in the church choir of her minister/ father when she was six years old says that she found her own vocation when she started singing soul. She first started attracting attention with The Tastemakers. On the cusp of an international breakthrough with The Affirmations, she recently put her job with the university choir on hold to chase her dream. “My tagline as a voice coach is that you shouldn’t bother wasting time trying to imitate other people because why would you try to sing like Beyoncé when you can amaze the world with your own voice?”

Amour pour le cinéma de genre, formalisme organique et fantaisie caractérisent également le troisième film d’Hélène Cattet et Bruno Forzani : le polar flamboyant Laissez bronzer les cadavres. Le couple bruxellois (Amer, L’étrange couleur des larmes de ton corps), révèle volontiers ses secrets de fabrication. — NIELS RUËLL

CINÉMA

« J’ai tout de suite vu des images de westerns à l’italienne quand j’ai lu le livre, » dit Cattet. « Les personnages sont ni bons, ni méchants. Il y a un côté graphique et la violence est un peu sadique et anarchiste, » poursuit Forzani. « Les codes du western, comme ceux du giallo (genre de cinéma d’exploitation principalement italien, ndlr), sont intrinsèquement liés au graphisme et à la mise en scène. Ce langage nous permet de faire quelque chose d’organique, de formel et de sensoriel. » Une sélection de films ayant nourri leur inspiration est également à voir au cinéma Nova : Seul contre tous de Gaspar Noé, La Vénus à la fourrure de Jesús Franco, Bullet Ballet de Shinya Tsukamoto et Le dernier face à face de Sergio Sollima. « La musique du générique de début est tirée de ce western all’italiana, » dit Forzani en riant. « La mise en scène de Sollima n’est pas aussi flamboyante que celle de Leone ou Corbucci. Mais c’est lui le plus politique. »

MANCHETTE Laissez bronzer les cadavres est une adaptation du néo-polar éponyme de Jean-Patrick Manchette et Jean-Pierre Bastid. « Manchette a amené un nouveau souffle au polar traditionnel: plus politique et plus comportementaliste ou behaviouriste, » dit Bruno Forzani. « On n’est pas dans la psychologisation mais dans l’action. Les personnages sont caractérisés par l’action. C’est très cinématographique, » complète Hélène Cattet. « J’ai découvert ses polars alors que je travaillais dans une librairie place Brugmann. C’est proche de ce que nous faisons en cinéma. » Forzani: « On a eu de la chance. Le fils de Manchette ne veut plus vendre les droits à des réalisateurs français. Son père était tellement déçu par les adaptations françaises à l’exception de Nada de Claude Chabrol. »

NOUVEAU RÉALISME Si le couple de réalisateurs raffole des romans noirs et des westerns spaghettis, ils affectionnent également le Nouveau Réalisme, un courant artistique qui a coloré l’Europe des années soixante. « Un des personnages, l’artiste Luce, nous faisait penser à Niki de Saint Phalle. On l’a mise au centre du film et on a utilisé le mouvement Nouveau Réalisme pour faire décoller l’adaptation du livre. On a joué avec le body-painting à la Yves Klein et avec le goût pour la destruction d’Arman. Les sculptures en métal de Jean Tinguely ont inspiré des décors. On a utilisé ce mouvement pour donner une deuxième lecture au film. On va plus loin qu’une fusillade. On transforme la violence et l’action en performance. On dirige le film vers une transe, jusqu’à l’abstraction, » explique Cattet.

CORSICA Les réalisateurs à la forte identité stylistique ont mis un an et demi à trouver le lieu adéquat pour tourner leur adaptation cinématographique. « On a cherché dans le sud de la France, la Sicile, l’Italie, le Portugal et l’Espagne. Finalement on a trouvé l’endroit idéal en Corse. Le seul problème: on ne pouvait y accéder qu’à pied. Pour monter le matériel et les voitures on a dû utiliser un hélicoptère, » dit Forzani. « Mais ça valait le coup, » ajoute Cattet. « La Corse est parfaite. Le roman se passe sous une canicule. On a trouvé un village abandonné. On s’y sent isolés: coincés entre la mer et la montagne. La mer est l’équivalent du désert dans les westerns, un désert bleu, ce qui est parfait pour notre travail sur les couleurs. »

LAISSEZ BRONZER LES CADAVRES Après leur premier film Amer, encensé par Quentin Tarantino, Hélène Cattet et Bruno Forzani sont passés à la vitesse supérieure. Pour L’étrange couleur des larmes de ton corps, ils ont poussé encore plus loin l’esthétique exubérante et la bande-son grinçante pour offrir au spectateur une expérience étourdissante. Ça n’a pas marché pour tout le monde. Leur troisième film est plus accessible sans pour autant abandonner leur penchant et talent pour le cinéma hyperstylisé. Cela s’explique peut-être par le fait que le roman noir de Manchette et Bastid offre juste assez de matière narrative et de repères pour s’abandonner sans crainte à leur rêve de cinéma. Après une attaque à main armée, une bande de gangsters se cache dans les ruines d’un village de montagne corse abandonné où une artiste attend l’inspiration. Des invités surprise, une trahison, la chaleur torride et deux policiers poussent les malfrats à bout. Le paradis se teinte de rouge sang. « J’avais peur de faire cette adaptation, » avoue Forzani. « Ce n’était pas autour d’un personnage, ce n’était pas intimiste mais beaucoup plus extraverti et ça ne venait pas de nous. Comment donner de la chaire au film ? Comment être fidèle à notre idée de toujours qui est de raconter les choses par des images ? On ne veut pas d’images qui ne sont que simples illustrations ou ornements. Heureusement on a trouvé l’aspect onirique, surréaliste en restant fidèle au livre. » Et Cattet d’ajouter: «Moi, j’étais confiante mais Bruno avait des craintes. En travaillant, il a vu des brèches dans lesquelles on a pu s’engouffrer pour créer notre univers. »

De mensen verbieden om te treuren. In Indonesië werd daar in de jaren van de dictatuur een vergeefse poging toe ondernomen. In de Kaaistudio’s creëren de Indonesische beeldend kunstenaar Jompet Kuswidananto en choreografe Meg Stuart net ruimte om uiting te geven aan onze zorgen. — MICHAËL BELLON

oor de vanuit Berlijn en Brussel opererende Meg Stuart was 2017 een goed jaar. Ze keerde met An evening of solo works even terug naar haar thuisland de Verenigde Staten, toerde met de succesvoorstellingen Hunter, Until our hearts stop en Shown and told, verwelkomde scenograaf en beeldend kunstenaar Jozef Wouters in de werking van Damaged Goods, en ging ook voor een aantal andere projecten samenwerkingen aan met andere artiesten. De recentste is die met de gevestigde Indonesische kunstenaar Jompet Kuswidananto, die in het kader van Europalia Indonesia een installatie komt maken, waar lichtontwerper Jan Maertens aan meewerkt, geluidskunstenaar Mieko Suzuki en muzikant Ikbal Simamora Lubys een dimensie aan toevoegen en Stuart vervolgens een performance van maakt. “Ik werd door Arco Renz (choreograaf, vroeger nog PARTS-student, en nu curator van het podiumkunstenprogramma van Europalia Indonesia, mb) benaderd om een productie te maken in het kader van Europalia,” vertelt Meg Stuart. “Ik was in 2010 wel eens in Jakarta geweest met Maybe forever, maar veel meer ook niet. Ik kreeg carte blanche, maar tijdens ons overleg over hoe ik met mijn werk een verbinding zou kunnen maken met Indonesië, introduceerde Arco me ook bij Jompet. Hij toonde me zijn werk en regelde ook een ontmoeting in Berlijn. Daarna ben ik met Jan Maertens en Mieko Suzuki een rondreis van twee weken gaan maken in de streek in Indonesië waar Jompet woont – Jogjakarta op het eiland Java – en naar Bali om al wat te werken. Jompet en muzikant Ikbal Simamora Lubys zijn briljante artiesten en ik ben blij om met hen te werken.”

Die thema’s lagen in het verlengde van een aantal van mijn interesses en obsessies en zo werd het een echte ontmoeting. Daardoor gaat de voorstelling dus ook niet over Indonesië. Al zijn er natuurlijk sporen van onze ervaringen ginds in te vinden. Zoals van de veldopnames die we er maakten, of sporen van de dans die we er zagen.

Kan je iets vertellen over die titel Celestial sorrow? STUART: De ‘sorrow’ heeft te maken met iets wat Jompet vertelde over de tijd van de dictatuur, namelijk dat bepaalde droevige liedjes in die tijd verboden werden. Mensen werden verondersteld zich goed te voelen, omdat het zogezegd ook goed ging met het land. Dat verhaal deed me nadenken over hoe droefheid, en het feit dat je die uitdrukt, dan wel gevaarlijk zou kunnen zijn. Als je je eenmaal realiseert dat je iets mist, en je dat verlies omhelst en erover begint te reflecteren dat je niet tevreden bent met de toestand zoals die is, dan ben je niet productief en raakt het systeem waarin je functioneert onder druk. Treuren is disruptief. Rouwen past niet in een rigide timing en zo val je buiten de verwachtingspatronen. Deze voorstelling gaat daarom over hoe we dat wat onzegbaar en onverteer-

Ik wilde ook een relatie creëren tussen licht en stem. Bekijken hoe je met je stem licht kan laten schijnen en geluid en licht kan laten resoneren met elkaar. En hoe je het fysieke aspect van vocaal werk – zangpartijen, imaginaire taal, sound poetry, gemompel en gemurmel – in de ruimte kan gebruiken als uitgangspunt voor bewegings- en dansmateriaal. baar is toch proberen te verteren, transformeren en doorgeven. Droefheid is ons geboorterecht. Het eerste wat we doen als we geboren worden is wenen. En dat blijft een deel van ons leven, waarin dingen onvermijdelijk veranderen en uiteindelijk sterven. Zorgen kan je dus niet aan de kant schuiven. De hemelse kwalificatie ‘celestial’ dient om de zaak open te trekken. In plaats van het over Indonesië, Europa of Amerika te hebben, willen we veeleer een oneindige, eeuwige tijdruimte installeren. Het moest ook een titel zijn die een zwaar onderwerp in een poëtisch kader plaatst.

Ewa ja Het is achter de rug. 2017 is de voorbije weken nog eens ordentelijk samengevat, in hoogte- en dieptepunten opgerakeld en nadien netjes weer in de doos gestopt. Return to sender. Het jaar dat zich in het collectieve wereldgeheugen heeft gegrift als een genadeloos miserabele set van 365 dagen, werd toepasselijk afgesloten door een maand die met een eenenvijftigste tint grijs duidelijk heeft gemaakt dat de werkelijkheid altijd de fictie overtreft. Afgelopen jaar werd er gegraaid naar vrouwen en in de vetpotten van daklozen. Er werd bedacht dat wij mensen van het

Misschien is al die miserie die afgelopen jaar zo ostentatief aan de oppervlakte is gekomen wel een signaal dat het gedaan is met diep te vallen? The only way is up? superieure soort zijn om met nog minder wroeging over te kunnen gaan tot de grote #opkuis. In de Verenigde Staten werden in anno Donaldi 1 moslims in de ban gedaan, kregen white supremacists een hart onder de riem gestoken, en werden de banden met Rusland aangehaald. De journalistiek werd ginds en hier fake, de klimaatopwarming vooral in harde winters broodnodig, en Jeruzalem werd de hoofdstad van Israël. Kim Jong-un bleek een kleinere en veel minder potente nucleaire knop te hebben dan Donald Trump, en de EU en Groot-Brittannië zijn vergeten wat ze ooit samen hadden. In de straten van Brussel ondersteunden

shoppende militairen opnieuw de lokale economie in plaats van Zalando, werd aan de nobele kunst van de Motografie een heus Fuseum gewijd, en bleken rellende jongeren toch nog naar de bibliotheek te gaan. Het was kortom geen jaar om vrolijk van te worden. En toch… Misschien is al die miserie die afgelopen jaar zo ostentatief aan de oppervlakte is gekomen wel een signaal dat het gedaan is met diep te vallen? The only way is up? Misschien blijkt #metoo voor nóg veel meer te staan dan het recht van de vrouw op grenzen, op een nee, op gelijkheid, en reikt de impact van dé hashtag van 2017 nóg verder? Tot een meer algemeen doorbreken van de stilte, van het gedogen en aanvaarden. Tot een onmogelijk nog te negeren roep om transparantie en verantwoordelijkheid. Kuis dít op! Als 2017 het jaar was van het zaaien in erbarmelijke omstandigheden, mogen we in 2018 hopen op een oogst onder heldere hemel. In die zin moeten we in alle naïviteit van het Ketnet-kinderwoord van het jaar misschien gewoon hét woord van het jaar maken, alle sugardaddy’s, fidgetspinners, influencers en alternatieve feiten ten spijt. ‘Ewa ja’ werd geplukt uit het gelijknamige nummer van het Antwerpse rappersduo SLM en betekent zoveel als: “het is wat het is, laten we er het beste van maken.” Salahdine Ibnou Kacemi en zijn kompaan Saïd Boumazoughe (die straks op het witte doek te zien is met Patser en in de KVS met Drarrie in de nacht) verrijzen uit de shit, en doen dat met goede moed en een positieve kijk op wat we delen. an you still not shut up about Frances McDormand’s performance as a pregnant police detective in Fargo even though that classic by the Coen brothers is already 21 years old? Wait until you see her in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Only last week, McDormand won the Golden Globe for Best Actress for her outstanding performance in this film. She plays a divorced mother who can slay as many people with her sharp tongue as John Wayne slayed outlaws in his western movies. She is driven by immense sadness, guilt, and desire for revenge. Her daughter was raped, burned, and murdered. The local police department in Ebbing, Missouri has abandoned the search for the killer. She thinks that is because they are too busy torturing the local black community. She tries to force the sheriff (Woody Harrelson) to take the investigation more seriously by putting up three provocative advertisements. The film would have been excellent even if it had kept to her screams for attention and struggle for justice. Martin McDonagh, the Irish director and screenwriter who made his breakthrough with In Bruges, throws out lines and thoughts that will make you chuckle, shiver, and think. The anti-hypocritical provocateur

knows no sacred cows. And his actors value the many little gems he has given them. A few touches of slapstick keep this film grounded. Most of them are provided by Sam Rockwell. He plays a cop who can barely control his rage, racism, and idiocy, and who goes berserk whenever his boss gets in a tight spot. But the film isn’t just about injustice. The devilish McDonagh frequently takes his story in directions that you will not expect unless you’ve seen the film more than once, and he pokes fun at our propensity to mess everything up. Depressing and invigorating.

Le raz-de-marée #meetoo qui a cloué au pilori une poignée d’agresseurs et de sexistes de premier plan s’est déchaîné en automne. Mais au printemps déjà, la réalisatrice et scénariste Kaouther Ben Hania condamnait la misogynie et le patriarcat dans la Tunisie post-révolutionnaire alors qu’elle présentait au Festival de Cannes le successeur très noir mais non pas désespéré du Challat de Tunis. Lors d’une fête, une jeune femme est brutalement violée dans la rue (hors cadre) par un groupe de policiers. Elle rassemble tout son courage pour porter plainte la nuit même mais se heurte à un mur d’incompréhension, d’opposition, d’intimidation et de réprobation. Elle atterrit finalement au commissariat de police où travaillent les coupables. Quoi de plus terrible et de traumatisant ? Le titre évoque les contes mais ce film suffocant et combatif est profondément ancré dans la réalité. Un cruel cauchemar. Le choix de neuf plans-séquences était-il judicieux ? Ben Hania a-t-elle poussé trop loin la mise en contexte ? Ce qui est sûr, c’est que son film très dur dit ce qui doit être dit et ça, c’est puissant. (NR)

Met Kristof Hoornaert staat een Vlaamse regisseur op die van Andrej Tarkovski en Robert Bresson houdt. Hij gelooft dus in contemplatieve cinema die zijn kracht niet put uit het narratieve maar uit het cinematografische. Halleluja. Helaas komt zijn debuutfilm nooit van de grond. Een oude kluizenaar die zich jaren geleden terugtrok uit de zinloos gewelddadige wereld, neemt een haveloze jongeman in huis die geen woord meer over zijn lippen krijgt sinds een daad van oudtestamentisch geweld. Wat nu? De jonge Gilles De Schryver worstelt met een ondankbare rol. De oude Johan Leysen kan als geen ander zwijgen en toch heel expressief zijn. Het camerawerk is knap: gevoelig en verzorgd, zonder te vervallen in mooie plaatjes. Resurrection is zeker geen prutswerk. Maar overbodige herhalingen, scènes die voortkabbelen terwijl hun punt al lang gemaakt is, enkele knullige dialogen en de erg bescheiden dramatiek maken het moeilijk om emotioneel op te gaan in de parabel. Misschien zijn we te streng, maar de lat voor contemplatieve cinema ligt hemelhoog. (NR)

Vorige lente stelde Kaouther Ben Hania haar pikzwarte La belle et la meute voor in Cannes. Een jongedame wordt op straat brutaal verkracht door politiemannen. Ze raapt al haar moed bijeen om diezelfde nacht nog een klacht in te dienen, maar botst op onbegrip en tegenwerking, en belandt uiteindelijk in het politiekantoor waar de daders rondlopen. De almaar benauwendere, strijdlustige film is een aan de werkelijkheid ontleende nachtmerrie. Geen foutloze film, maar wel een die zegt wat gezegd moet worden.

La Flandre compte un nouveau réalisateur qui croit au cinéma contemplatif : Kristof Hoornaert. Hallelujah. Malheureusement, son premier film ne décolle jamais vraiment. Un vieil ermite accueille un jeune sans abri qui a perdu la parole après avoir commis un acte violent digne de l’Ancien Testament. Oui, et après? Resurrection est tout sauf un film raté mais dans cette parabole la répétition désuète, les scènes traînassantes, les dialogues maladroits et le drame sans surprise font barrage à l’émotion du spectateur.

Last spring, Kaouther Ben Hania presented her pitch-black Beauty and the Dogs at Cannes. A young woman is violently raped on the street by a group of policemen. She gets up all her courage to report the crime, but faces disbelief and opposition, and ultimately she finds herself in the police station where the perpetrators work. This ever-tenser and more upsetting, combative film is a nightmare based on a true story. It is not a faultless film, but it presses its finger into a festering wound.

Flanders has a new director who believes in contemplative cinema: Kristof Hoornaert. Hallelujah. Unfortunately, though, his film debut never really takes off. An old hermit takes in a young homeless man who has been unable to speak since perpetrating a violent act of Old Testament proportions. Now what? Resurrection is by no means bungled, but the unnecessary repetition, gently babbling scenes, awkward dialogue, and unexceptional drama prevent you from immersing yourself fully in this parable.

’automne dernier, Paris se transformait pour la deuxième fois en plateforme de la photographie contemporaine du monde arabe. Réparti entre l’Institut du Monde arabe, La Maison européenne de la photographie et d’autres espaces de culture, cet événement unique révélait à nouveau les pays du Maghreb et du Moyen-Orient comme un nid bouillonnant de talents. La Villa Empain offre un savoureux « aprèsgoût » de la Biennale avec Instantanés d’Orient, une exposition réunissant six des artistes (originaires d’un pays arabe ou travaillant sur cette région du monde) présents à Paris. Un échantillon certes restreint mais pas moins représentatif qui donne le ton et l’eau à la bouche. Aux lendemains douloureux, parfois carrément tragiques, de révolutions avortées

ou confisquées, la génération « des Printemps » ne se contente pas d’intégrer les codes de la photographie contemporaine mais en enrichit merveilleusement le vocabulaire, y ajoutant un lexique ancré dans des identités et des réalités propres. Malgré les douleurs, les interdictions et l’insuffisance de soutien politique, la scène contemporaine arabe est en ébullition, mue par le besoin, vital, de s’exprimer. De parler

pour elle-même. C’est bien ce que raconte la photographe tunisienne Mouna Karray dans sa série monochrome Noir. Le corps entièrement enveloppé d’un tissu blanc, seule sa main dépasse pour enclencher la prise de vue à distance. « Mon corps est emprisonné, contraint mais créateur, » explique-t-elle. C’est dans l’acte photographique que réside son salut. Tunisien également, Douraïd Souissi photographie des quidams noyés dans un imposant arrière-fond noir et tournant le dos au spectateur. C’est, en fait, les médias et la scène politique qu’ils boudent. La photographe libano-américaine Rania Matar fait poser librement des jeunes filles de Beyrouth dans leur environnement, à des âges différents. Une réflexion sur le rapport au corps, l’identité, la féminité, la représentation de soi, la sexualité, et bien plus encore. Quant à Jaber Al Azmeh , il se perd dans le désert syrien afin de saisir, dans un style minimaliste, les altérations sensibles mais non pas moins significatives que la guerre, les migrations, la sécurité et le consumérisme ont apporté au paysage. Le Saoudien Moath Alofi immortalise les mosquées abandonnées découvertes sur la route de Médine. Perdues au milieu du désert, inondées par le soleil, elles font penser à des mini bases lunaires et nous en disent autant sur le passé de l’Arabie que sur notre futur à tous. L’Allemand Stephan Zaubitzer a parcouru le monde à la recherche des salles de cinémas les plus kitsches et nostalgiques. Au Liban, il photographie des salles abandonnées, ajoutant un niveau de lecture en résonance avec la sombre réalité des alentours.

In een rustige straat in Watermaal-Bosvoorde stelt La Véraison een keuken voor die draait rond vlees van het Iberische schiereiland. Een mooi concept tegen redelijk democratische prijzen, waaraan bovendien weinig ontbreekt.

n wijngaardtaal verwijst ‘véraison’ naar de cruciale fase waarin de druif van kleur verandert en een glimp toont van haar uiteindelijke teint. Ook het restaurant La Véraison hebben we nog gekend voor het rijp was. Het ging om een tapasbar in Waterloo met een ietwat vage kaart. Sinds de verhuizing naar Watermaal-Bosvoorde lijkt het erop dat het een en ander is bijgeschaafd. We kwamen aan rond lunchtijd en stelden vast dat de plek haar publiek heeft gevonden: geen tafeltje was nog vrij. We raden je dus aan niet te aarzelen om te reserveren. Vervolgens merkten we dat de kaart geheel gewijd is aan Spaans vlees: rauwe en bereide charcuterie, stukje varkensvlees, stukjes rund… En dus lieten we de carnivoor in ons de vrije loop. Als opener kozen we voor een bord pata-negraham met tonnato-saus (€12). Aangenaam. Het gaat om drie rollades van ham, gevuld met rucola en besprenkeld met jus, dezelfde die we in de vitello tonnato proefden. De bereiding deed ons, in al haar eenvoud, plezier. Voor het hoofdgerecht schakelde de chef een versnelling hoger. We wilden graag een stuk varkensvlees testen: la presa (€22). Dit stukje, dat zich vooraan in de wervelkolom van het varken bevindt, smolt weg op de tong, temeer omdat de onberispelijke cuisson de zachtheid volledig behield. We genoten volop van de hazelnootsmaak. De nochtans zeer smakelijke chorizosaus (€3) – besteld om de vaardigheid van de kok te testen – bleek overbodig, want deze presa volstond zonder meer. Omdat een geluk nooit alleen komt, verdient ook de

kwaliteit van de frieten alle lof: goudkleurig en knapperig, gewoon ideaal. Idem voor de dame blanche (€8) geserveerd met gesmolten Chokotoff-chocolade. Wat er dan wel ontbrak? Twee zaken. Ten eerste zouden we graag plantaardige bijgerechten zien die wat meer zijn uitgewerkt – de onrijpe tomatenblokjes en de blaadjes sla waren de rest niet waard. Ten tweede: een wijnkaart die overeenstemt met de evolutie van de Spaanse wijnbouw. Maar ondanks die twee zwakke punten vinden we dit restaurant een mooi applaus waard.

À la Véraison, la viande espagnole est à l’honneur. En entrée, l’assiette de jambon cuit de pata negra sauce tonnato (12 €) est plaisante. Il s’agit de trois roulades de jambon fourrées de roquette et arrosées avec un jus au thon. Pour le plat, on teste un morceau de viande de porc, la presa (22 €). La cuisson irréprochable en préserve le moelleux et on se régale de son goût de noisette. Les frites dorées et croquantes sont idéales. Idem pour la dame blanche au Chokotoff fondu (8 €). Que manque-t-il ? Des végétaux plus travaillés et une carte des vins plus en phase avec l’évolution du vignoble espagnol. On applaudit tout de même des deux mains. FR

The menu is extensive and focused on Spanish meat: hot and cold cuts, pork, beef, etc. Our starter, pata negra ham with tonnato sauce (€12), was simple but delightful: three roulades of cooked ham stuffed with rocket and sprinkled with a tuna jus. The main course, la presa (€22), a cut of pork, melted in the mouth, cooked perfectly to retain its texture and nutty flavour. Crisp and golden, the chips were perfect. As was the dame blanche (€8) made with melted Chokotoffs. There were two things missing: more inventive vegetable accompaniments and a wine list reflecting the evolution of Spanish producers. We were nonetheless very impressed.

De tongbreker van een titel zegt het al: het voor het jongste TheaterFestival geselecteerde Klutserkrakkekilililokatastrof van Ballet Dommage en fABULEUS is zonder meer grensverleggend jeugdtheater. De handeling bestaat uit een mix van mysterieuze rituelen en gewelddadige kinderspelletjes met onder meer een vervaarlijke hamer van mousse in een sterrol. De acteurs bedienen zich van een smakelijke taalpuree van (verzonnen) Duits, Frans, Italiaans en West-Vlaams. De toon is bewust onnozel en infantiel met een hoog Teletubbies-gehalte, maar dan zover doorgedreven dat het resultaat surrealistisch aandoet. Ceci n’est pas du théâtre!

Sinds 2013 heeft CC Strombeek in samenwerking met het S.M.A.K. een reeks opmerkelijke tentoonstellingen uit de grond weten te stampen. Na expo’s met werk van onder meer Daniel Buren, Gerhard Richter en Ann-Veronica Janssens wordt nu het oeuvre van de ‘hedendaagse barokkunstenaar’ Narcisse Tordoir belicht. Terwijl dat in Strombeek in dialoog treedt met de schilderijen van de Indonesische Fendry Ekel, wordt in het Forum van de KMSKB Tordoirs Fake barok getoond: een 28 meter lange fries die het leven van vluchtelingen, oorlogsverschrikkingen en de uitbuiting van de planeet verbeeldt. À 83 ans, le facétieux Argentin, exilé en France depuis 1963, continue à peindre et à dessiner ses scènes de rue habitées de personnages un peu raides sous leur chapeau et de dames aux formes généreuses. Nostalgique d’un monde disparu, il a fait des trottoirs du Córdoba de son enfance, la scène d’un théâtre tendre et grotesque. Seguí est un faux naïf et un dessinateur rusé qui s’est nourri de Grosz, de Goya, de Picasso et de la sculpture primitive africaine. Depuis qu’il tient un crayon, il accorde toute sa confiance à son imagination, tout en gardant à l'œil sa composition, plus complexe qu’il n’y paraît. FR

The resulting series WOMEN Words is no less explicit than the long rejected work that the pioneer of feminist art has been creating on canvas since 1969 – initially based on her first husband’s porn magazine collection: photorealistic close-ups of sexual acts in series with titles like Fuck Paintings, Girl on Girl Paintings, Masturbation Paintings… Explicit graphics with a liberating message.
