Big Year Rolls Out Strong After a surprisingly intense and extended deep freeze here in Kansas City during the month of January, it certainly is nice to be looking ahead to spring and most importantly a welcome trip to the ABMA Convention in Florida. Throw in the long-awaited return of a “big tradeshow” with the launch of the World Brush Expo set for May 22-24 in Italy and it makes for a wonderfully exciting first half of 2024 for the brush industry. As our digital presence for Brushware continues to expand, I am happy to report each year gets a little more challenging as we look to keep up with brush manufacturing news across the world. I still think back to our first year in the industry in 2019 when news releases casually rolled in. I wasn’t sure at the time if we had enough content to support a weekly newsletter. Now, we struggle to fit everything in each week. Kicking off this year, with the two major events on deck, the pace of brush industry news has been off the charts. That makes for quite a bit of fun and is definitely in the category of a good problem to have.

FOLLOW BRUSHWARE

Even in the middle of all that hustle and bustle, Check out Brushware on I did have the privilege of hosting a roundtable LinkedIn: Our Fastest discussion with the organizational leaders of Growing Social Channel the new Expo. The conversation included ABMA President Chris Monahan, FEIBP President Alessandro Acquaderni and Marco Momoli, from event organizer BolognaFiere. You can see the results of that discussion on page 22, but I want to emphasize that it was truly a pleasure to hear firsthand all of the progress and effort that is going into the launch. There’s a lot of information in our brief discussion, but my top takeaway from the session was the energy and passion that all three leaders and organizations are bringing to the table. It’s quite clear that there’s a genuine drive to build an event that really showcases this global industry and drives connection and business for manufacturers and suppliers alike. We hope you enjoy that discussion as you make your own plans to visit the Expo in May. Of course, there is plenty ahead of the event and, this edition is full of all our usual industry information and columns and also features our guide to the 107th ABMA Convention along with final results for 2023 U.S. Import and Export data relevant to the industry. Please enjoy this issue and I look forward to seeing you soon in Florida or Italy!

ZAHORANSKY Sells Mold and Tool Facility in Rothenkirchen

The Pulse World Brush Expo 2024: Ticket Sales Open The journey toward the 2024 World Brush Expo set for May 22-24 in Bologna, Italy, took a significant step as ticket sales officially opened in late January. Attendees can secure attendance by visiting the new page on the World Brush Expo website: www.worldbrushexpo.com/tickets/

In the course of future-oriented development for the group of companies, ZAHORANSKY has sold the ZAHORANSKY Formen- und Werkzeugbau GmbH production site for injection molds in Rothenkirchen (Steinberg) to MT Management GmbH. As part of a management buyout, long-standing managing director and toolmaking expert Monty Tepper will take over the entrepreneurial responsibility. Since 1991, the site has been producing injection molds for a wide variety of plastic products in the personal care and consumer products sector in the Vogtland region of Saxony with around 70 employees. In the future, the company will operate under the name Molding Tec Steinberg GmbH and will continue to focus on the production and sale of molds and tools. The new ownership and management structures will allow for a smooth continuation of business activities. With the completion of the transaction, ZAHORANSKY has reached a significant milestone in the future-oriented development of the group of companies and is focusing its production capacities for injection molds on the sites in Freiburg and Coimbatore (India) to achieve further synergies between injection molding, automation technology and mechanical engineering. The management of the companies has decided to continue to work closely together in the future.”

FEIBP President Alessandro Acaquaderni says, “Embracing our ethos of ‘being active,’ I encourage each of you to not only secure your tickets early but also to spread the word among your colleagues and industry friends. Your proactive engagement is vital in building momentum for this not-to-be-missed event and ensures you are at the forefront of industry developments and networking opportunities.”

YOUR BRUSH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS CELANESE FILAMENTS CONTINUES TO LEAD THE WAY IN INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS For more than 80 years, Celanese Filaments, formerly owned by Dupont, has been recognized as a leader in innovative synthetic filaments that enable brush manufacturers to address emerging trends and meet evolving consumer expectations.

HEALTH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS - TOOTHBRUSH FILAMENTS The most important component of a toothbrush lies in the bristle. With outstanding industry expertise accumulated over the years, coupled with our proven technologies, Celanese Filaments is dedicated to the oral care brush industry with our nylon solutions under the brand names of Celanese Tynex®(nylon 612) and Celanese Herox®(nylon 610). Leading toothbrush brands and manufacturers are able to produce very high quality brushes with a balance of consistent quality, wear performance and unmatched productivities in tufting and end-rounding by using Celanese filaments. As consumer trends in toothbrush are increasingly focused on the six major areas of 1) Visual Attractiveness, 2) Interdental Cleaning, 3) Plaque Removal, 4) Gum Comfort, 5) Gingival Cleaning and 6) Anti-microbial within the filaments, Celanese Filaments has been working closely with the leading global brands in oral care as well as toothbrush manufacturers by fulfilling these needs with our broad range of innovative products in the portfolio BEAUTY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS - FINE FILAMENTS Celanese Natrafil® filaments, a pioneering filament from Celanese’s unique polyester based material, contain proprietary texturizing additives that create a structured surface that mimics animal hair. Natrafil® filaments offer a synthetic alternative to animal hair in premium cosmetic powder brushes with more consistency in the bristle while maintaining the touch-and-feel of premium animal hair. Studies have shown that brushes made with Natrafil® filaments have equal to superior pickup and release performance versus brushes made with animal hair. EFFICIENCY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS – ABRASIVE FILAMENTS Like most industries, steel manufacturers are always looking forsquare feet of metal through the mill, cleaned and coated faster

than ever before. To accomplish this, steel mills are using more aggressive cleaning solutions. The problem is that the cleaning brushes typically used were quickly degrading because many plastics used in the brush filaments can’t handle the solutions of the extreme PH. The technical resources at Celanese Filaments were able to help solve the problem by adding stabilizers to one of our nylon polymer formulations, effectively extending the pH range where these filaments can be used. Brushes made with our filaments deliver cleaning performance for a longer life, helping over an improved service life, helping steel manufactures to achieve higher productivity. Another need voiced by customers is higher aggressiveness in metal finishing applications. Celanese Tynex® A filaments, a family of ceramic grit-containing filaments, was developed to meet this need. CREATIVITY DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS – PAINTBRUSH FILAMENTS When manufacturers began changing their paints to water-based formulations, more people began using paintbrushes made with synthetic bristles because the hog bristles traditionally used in paintbrushes lost stiffness in water-based paints. Synthetics such as Celanese Tynex®, Celanese Chinex® and Celanese Orel® brand filaments quickly became popular choices. As paint manufacturers continue to improve their water-based formulations by reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) content, increasing solid loadings and decreasing drying times, there is an ongoing need for increasingly higher performing brushes. To meet this need, Celanese Filaments continues to innovate and help customize solutions. For example, we developed filaments with stiffer crosssection that can push higher viscosity paints more efficiently. We also changed the shapes of the filaments so that they not only pick up more paint from the can for faster application, but are easier to clean.

YOUR BRUSH DESERVES THE BEST FILAMENTS

Recognition for being the global leader in filaments comes from our customers. You inspire us to make a difference in the world. We will continue to advance our innovations because we believe your BRUSH deserves the best FILAMENTS. 1-800-635-9695 | www.celanese.com

Lessmann Expands Management Team Thirty-five years ago, brothers Jürgen and Dieter Lessmann took over the medium-sized family business in Oettingen, Germany, from their father as managing directors. The brush manufacturer has now been on the road to success for well over 35 years and supplies customers worldwide with premium tools, all of which are developed and produced in Oettingen. The company, founded in 1948, has developed over the past decades into a highly technical and innovative family business with over 250 employees. To initiate the management succession plan, the brothers have expanded the management team. On January 1, 2024, Dieter Lessmann gave up part of his area of responsibility and Cornelia Kitzsteiner took over management of sales and marketing. Jürgen Lessmann continues to be responsible for technical management, while Dieter Lessmann remains responsible for finance, human resources and IT. In addition, Anne Galinski supports the top management level as an authorized representative (appointed in 2004). Kitzsteiner has been working for the Lessmann company for over 30 years. She started at Lessmann as an employee in export sales and, after a short time became the team leader of the department. In 2004 she took over the company’s overall sales management. In 2021, she was appointed as an authorized representative. “We are pleased that we have found the ideal person in Cornelia Kitzsteiner to expand the management team. She knows our company and the industry exceptionally well.

While others may observe from the sidelines, you have chosen to lead by example, ensuring your voice and innovations contribute to the evolving “center of gravity” of our industry. This isn’t just participation; it’s about taking a stand for progress, opportunity and the collective strength of the brushware community.” He went on to offer advice on how World Brush Expo exhibitors can maximize the opportunity with the following approach: 1. Press and Publications: Share the news of your participation with industry magazines, websites and directories. A press release or announcement is an opportunity to drive ongoing exposure to your company’s brand, while also further boosting the significance of the World Brush Expo. 2. Direct Communication: Utilize digital banners in your email signatures and communicate your involvement through emails, your website, and, most importantly, through word of mouth. 3. Engage on LinkedIn: Follow the World Brush Expo LinkedIn page and interact with posts related to the show, the participants and the beautiful city of Bologna. Comments, likes and shares bring added exposure. 4. Expand the Community: Invite LinkedIn connections to follow the WBE page. New Machine Launch From Roth Composite Machinery

Faster, More Flexible, More Sustainable: Revolutionary New Machine for the Brush Industry

Thomas Halbrucker (left) and Dennis Brückner (right) from Roth Composite Machinery explain the benefits of the innovative machine concept, which can significantly reduce production costs in the manufacture of household and industrial brushes. Photo provided by Roth Composite Machinery.

Roth Composite Machinery, headquartered in Burgwald, Germany, has announced the launch of its groundbreaking new machine for the brush industry. The new development from the innovation department includes several advantages for brush manufacturers. The fully automatic concept can be used to produce brushes that are completely different in terms of length, geometry and material — without the need for timeconsuming retooling. The end result is a machine that offers reduced set-up times, higher output and unparalleled flexibility in production.

14 | www.brushwaremag.com

“During development, our main focus was on speed, flexibility and efficiency,” says Dennis Brückner, responsible for the Burgwald plant at Roth Composite Machinery. Thomas Halbrucker, sales engineer, says, “The machine concept fulfills the requirements of flexible mass production and meets our high standards of quality and sustainability.”

Machine concept integrates all work steps The new brush-filling carousel features two filling tools and works according to the twin principle. With five electronic axes and the interchangeable carrier transfer design, the highperformance carousel machine can pick up brush bodies made of all common materials (such as plastic or wood) at extremely

high speed, drill holes between 1.8 and 8.5 millimeters in diameter and fill them with the corresponding bristles. Finishing processes such as splicing the bristles, cleaning and even labeling or embossing the brush body are also fully automated. A shearing unit has been integrated for the production of toilet brushes, which can simply be called in if required.

Speed, speed The speed offered by the new machine is also impressive. Each filling tool can produce 610 bundles per minute, meaning that the new machine can produce a total of 1,220 bundles per minute. The innovative “Roth Flying Cabinet” system also ensures speed. The high-performance carousel rotates permanently in one direction, thus guaranteeing continuous operation without the carousel having to turn forward and backward. “This new process has several advantages,” says Halbrucker. “The maintenance effort is almost zero, which means that the machine has even less downtime. In addition, the ‘Roth Flying Cabinet’ is even less susceptible to external influences such as vibration or dirt.” As an added bonus, the machine consumes less energy thanks to its very even operation. Manufacturers of household or industrial brushes can therefore significantly reduce their production costs with the new machine from Roth Composite Machinery with higher output quantity, shorter set-up times, lower maintenance requirements and energy-saving operation.

Energy-saving and completely CO2-friendly production in Burgwald In line with the Roth companies’ aspirations, sustainability took center stage in the development of the new highperformance carousel. It is not only the operating principle of the machine that saves energy, but the production of the new machine also takes a sustainable approach. The system was developed entirely at the Burgwald site and manufactured using 100 percent green electricity. No long transport routes are or were necessary to manufacture the new machine and only solvent-free paints are used. Most importantly though, the machine scores points for durability and longevity. “We guarantee 25 years of spare parts availability,” says Brückner. Skills Gap Challenge for Manufacturing Success By Lisa Anderson According to a study by Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute, two million jobs could go unfilled in the sector by 2030. The cost in 2030 alone could potentially total $1 trillion. Worse yet, the surveyed manufacturers said it is 36 percent harder to find the right talent than in 2018, and 77 percent of manufacturers expect to have ongoing difficulties attracting and retaining manufacturing employees. As technology, automation and artificial intelligence (AI) continue to gain steam, lower-skilled jobs are automated, but higherskilled jobs become critical. The gap is significant. Additionally, as reshoring gains momentum and manufacturing expansion becomes a priority with the rise of geopolitical risk and the rollout of government-funded programs such as the CHIPS Act, manufacturing will increase, and the skills gap will widen. Finally, by 2030, the youngest of the largest generation in history will be older than 65, further decreasing the workforce. Simply hiring a recruiting firm will no longer be sufficient. There simply are not enough manufacturing resources to fulfill the needs. Proactive executives will put an increased emphasis on training and development. For example, an aerospace manufacturer needed far more machine operators than they could find, so the company set up a training facility and hired trainers to put new hires through a comprehensive training and development program. They went from constantly struggling to creating a pipeline of qualified candidates. Another client sent employees to a technical training center in the region to gain manufacturing skills. Relying on your planners, buyers, and analysts’ college education and prior work history is no longer sufficient. At least 80 percent of clients are struggling to hire resources with the appropriate education and training. For example, two power systems and electrical equipment manufacturers serving different industries went live with an upgraded ERP system. Although they brought on significant support, both struggled due to lack of production planning and inventory concept education and training for their resources. Proactive clients are arranging ERP and MRP (material requirements planning) education for their employees. For example, a significant beverage manufacturer has been

16 | www.brushwaremag.com

coordinating with a local supply chain education partner to provide practical education. Turn traditional thinking on its head. Supplement your employees with consultants to upgrade processes and improve efficiencies, hire temporary employees to fill gaps and partner with specialist resources such as engineering firms to make quicker progress. Take the opportunity to identify different pools of talent such as veterans and retired workers and reexamine your qualifications. For example, a building products manufacturer eliminated its requirement for a college degree and replaced it with practical experience and/or approved skills training. Not only did they find additional candidates, but the candidates were a better fit for the role. Leadership and culture will be vital to closing the skills gap. People do not follow companies; people follow leaders. The best employees expect leaders to have high expectations, to address poor performers, to face reality with tough topics, and to appreciate and recognize progress. For example, an industrial equipment manufacturer was able to find and retain employees in a small town with limited resources and a key competitor because employees knew that the leader would expect high levels of performance, push for excellence and care about results. Attracting and retaining talent will be key to success in the manufacturing industry in the next decade. Proactive executives are developing creative alternatives to traditional hiring, retention, training and development strategies. The best remain committed to leadership and culture to retain top talent and attract scarce talent. Interview: Wöhler’s New SBM 840 for Flex Trim A/S

Wöhler Sales Manager Jürgen Tabert presents Flex Trim Sales Manager Karsten Larsen (on the right) his new SBM 840 strip brush machine for the production of sanding brushes. After 2008, this is the second SBM for Flex Trim A/S in Denmark.

“You have to be able to make it easier — and better.” This thought came to carpenter Poul Erik Jespersen more than 25 years ago while he was bent over the hand sander at his workplace in a furniture company. The thought developed into an idea which, after a development period of eight years, became an internationally recognized and patented sanding system that is now sold worldwide. The sanding system can be fitted to virtually any machine as long as the machine has an axis and a frequency-controlled motor to enable precise adjustment of the sanding speed. This means that the customer can generally use existing machines and can therefore avoid investing in new machines.

18 | www.brushwaremag.com

Flex Trim A/S from Denmark has been using an SBM 840 strip brush machine from Wöhler Brush Tech GmbH in Bad Wünnenberg, Germany, for the production of its exceptionally high-quality sanding brushes since 2008. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, Flex Trim decided to expand its production — convinced by the first machine, it had to be an SBM 840 from Wöhler Brush Tech. Wöhler sales manager Jürgen Tabert had a conversation with Karsten Larsen, sales manager at Flex Trim, about the reasons for the expansion and the decision in favor of another machine from Wöhler Brush Tech. Karsten, how has Flex Trim developed over the past few years? There has been a particularly positive development since 2017 — and then came corona. Despite corona, sales have continued to develop positively and we really made a lot more sales during the corona period. The world has also become smaller. Companies have become accustomed to holding meetings online. This has eliminated travel costs and made sales processes much more effective.

Are your order quantities changing? It used to be the case that people ordered as large quantities as possible in order to get price advantages. How is that developing for you? This varies. For some standard applications, it is always the same, i.e. large quantities and a favorable price. But for special products, customers prefer to pay a higher price to find the right solution. Some customers are confronted with ever smaller partial delivery quantities with the same total quantity over the year. What is your experience of this?

The Flex Trim sanding brushes are inserted into sanding heads. These are available in different lengths and diameters.

How has corona affected product development and new products for you? We had more time to delve deeper into the various processes. This also allowed us to develop several new products. In addition, we were able to manufacture special products and special solutions that have made us more interesting for customers, particularly in the robotics industry. How do your products differ from those of your competitors? What do your customers particularly appreciate about you and your products? I think most customers see Flex Trim’s products as the market leaders — both technically and in terms of quality. Yes, our products have a slightly higher price, but the service life of our brushes is significantly longer than that of our market competitors. This means it is more expensive to buy, but you get a lower price per square meter sanded. Most customers say: “Yes, it’s more expensive if you have to buy it, but it’s much cheaper when you use it and the quality is very, very high.” And we are always able to deliver. What outlook can you give for the future? Are there already developments as to how your business model or your products will change? We have seen several new developments during the corona period. But we also get different requests than before. Customers need special products and special solutions for certain profiles or a specific burr that needs to be removed from a corner. We therefore supply more sanding processes and sanding solutions than just sanding products. This is why highly effective production processes that allow us to react and change over quickly are very important to us.

We are also experiencing this development. This is precisely why it is so important for us to be able to change our production quickly. So that we lose as little time as possible. Many companies have what I always call a stock anxiety. They don’t want to have anything in stock. And we have to adapt to that. You have now purchased a new strip brush machine, an SBM 840, for the production of sanding brushes. Why was this new strip brush machine for sanding brushes necessary? There were two reasons. We have had the first machine since 2008 and have never had any problem with it. Nevertheless, having only one machine was a risk. With two machines, we can react faster, have to change over less and can manufacture products more quickly. In terms of capacity, we don’t actually need the machine, but we want to remove the risk and that’s why we need another machine now. Why did you choose a machine from Wöhler again? We were satisfied with the first machine. We have never had a problem with the machine. We were and still are very enthusiastic. That’s a wonderful statement, thank you very much! Were there any challenges in building this machine and the process that we were able to solve together and that were important to you? The only challenge was the delivery time. Everyone knows that some components have been difficult to obtain in recent years and we were aware of that, but everyone also knows that when you buy or order something, you want it as quickly as possible. Basically, however, there was no problem.

Machine User Case

The sanding brushes are used for processing wood, metal and composites.

However, a machine like this is not simply bought like a commodity, it is a very consultation and coordinationintensive process. How was the consultation and communication during the preparation and construction of the machine? I think Wöhler would say that the decision-making process took quite a long time. After all, we received the first offer years ago. However, we only really realized how important it was for us to get a new machine during the corona period. Technically, there weren’t that many challenges. We already have a (similar) Wöhler machine that has been running for years. This means that Wöhler had experience in building such a machine. We have experience of working with a machine like this and the close collaboration meant it was actually quite easy. We both knew what we wanted. We had discussed and developed different concepts together and then both independently returned to the tried and tested procedure, which was then optimized in certain areas. Yes, exactly. What impressed me the most was the conveyor belt for the automatic bundle feed. Ergonomically, that’s a big plus for the employees. I think that’s really great and it’s a really good thing, where I say, okay, that’s a huge advantage for us. Looking ahead now, what do you expect from development partners like Wöhler in the future? Like us, Wöhler is a market and innovation leader in this industry. You have to keep that in focus. It will become increasingly difficult to find employees for such processes in the coming years. That’s why it’s important that Wöhler and other companies in this area think about how to make it as easy as possible for employees. To have as few manual processes as possible. You have to keep that in mind.

20 | www.brushwaremag.com

The sanding brushes are available with different sanding and backing materials.

That’s something we hear again and again, the shortage of skilled workers, not just in Germany, but worldwide. In the future, the machine will have to take over many things that were previously done by skilled employees. And all this while production volumes are falling. So, it’s not a case of switching on today and switching off at the end of the month, but switching on this morning and switching to a different product at lunchtime. So, flexibility is definitely at the forefront. Karsten, thank you very much for the interview and we wish you a good production start and successful business with the new machine. Thank you, let me put it this way: we have had the first machine of this type since 2008. We have more Wöhler machines, also because we are satisfied. That means 2008, now 2024 — we’ll meet again in sixteen years at the latest. We will be happy to do so and then we will work together to overcome the predominant challenges and find the right solutions at that time. Thank you, thank you very much.

About the SBM 840 The Wöhler SBM 840 is a modular strip brush machine. It produces strip brushes with U-profile widths from 3 mm to 13 mm and fill lengths of up to 700 mm. Profile widths of up to 20 mm and Y-profiles are also possible as an option.

World Brush Expo

All Systems Go

Roundtable Interview with the organizers behind the launch of the Inaugural World Brush Expo As anticipation mounts for the inaugural World Brush Expo, set to unfold from May 22-24, 2024, in the picturesque city of Bologna, Italy, I had the privilege in late January of convening a roundtable discussion via Zoom with the key leaders at the helm of this transformative event. Replacing the venerable Interbrush tradeshow, the World Brush Expo aims to fill a critical gap for the brush industry, signaling a new era of connectivity and opportunity for industry professionals worldwide. Every four years, this marquee event will serve as a nexus where visionaries and innovators in the brush sector will converge to explore cutting-edge technologies, exchange insights and forge invaluable partnerships. As a joint partnership between three organizations, our discussion included: ABMA President Chris Monahan (President of Brush Fibers), FEIBP President Alessandro Acquaderni (CEO of SIT Brush) and Marco Momoli, from event organizer BolognaFiere.

Interview By Dylan Goodwin

Chris Monahan, ABMA President

Knowing the impact of Interbrush in the past, how important is the World Brush Expo to the brush industry overall? Chris Monahan: I think it’s immensely important. For one, it’s been quite a bit of time since we’ve all gotten together. The biggest factor was the pandemic. Obviously, that was such a global disruption. People who have been to multiple Interbrush events in the past understand how important it is from a global perspective. Especially now with today’s modern technology where we’re more connected now more than ever through Zoom and constant communication. To put a face with a name and to see people and to give them a hug and share wine and cheese is immensely important, especially in our industry where that human contact is such a big part of it. Plus, (a chance to see) all the technological advances that have happened in our industry since the last one (in 2016). Alessandro Acquaderni: I totally agree with Chris, a global event such as the World Brush Expo is needed for our industry. There were thoughts about changing format and changing ideas and the way it was held compared to the previous edition. The most important thing is that the event will exist because it will define the center of gravity of our industries and that people will participate as active exhibitors and as active visitors. Because the industry is made of people, as companies are made of people and the interactions between the companies and industries luckily are still decided by people.

22 | www.brushwaremag.com

Marco Momoli: It is important to have a physical show again. Visitors say it is important because of the serendipity of the aisles, meaning that you can walk through the aisles of the show. You can find something, meet people that you didn’t expect to meet or find something that you didn’t expect to see. And that’s something that can happen only when you are physically in one place all together with all the other people of the same sector. That’s something that will be happening in Bologna. So that’s very important for us.

As a partnership between three entities, can you speak a little bit about how that is working and the role that each entity is playing in organizing the event?

Alessandro Acquaderni, FEIBP President

At the time of this roundtable there are about 135 exhibitors signed up. Is this meeting with expectations and how are plans progressing? Marco Momoli: For the time being we are really satisfied with the results. I think that we will go beyond expectations because 135 exhibitors is really a good number right now. But I expect more to come. So we are very happy, being the first time that we have organized this show in Bologna, we were aiming to have between 100 and 150 exhibitors. So it’s going very well. I think we will reach more than 150.

Alessandro Acquaderni: The partnership is working very well. When we sat together, the FEIBP and the ABMA, to drive the change that was going to happen for the traditional brush show that we all wanted to redefine and redesign, we immediately agreed on the guidelines after discussing the different opinions about what was going on in our industry. FEIBP and the ABMA have always taken care of the needs of their members. So, we had been talking with people, with major potential suppliers and exhibitors of the show, listening to them, gathering the needs and then drafting together the idea of the new World Brush Expo. Then, looking for potential partners, we found that BolognaFiere immediately understood our needs and started proactively providing solutions. That was just the beginning, though. We (then) started defining the perimeter of the show and the topics and the characteristics. And still, it’s an ongoing process because we want to achieve the most successful brush show that we can guarantee as a federation and association.

Chris Monahan: I’m pleasantly surprised by the outcome so far because in the U.S. I go to a lot of conventions that are roughly in our industry, the Hardware Show, ISSA and the Houseware show. Those are all struggling with declining attendance, and some of them are even on their last legs. So to see a show that has come back and does have good attendance kind of goes against the trend — in the U.S. at least. So that was very positive.

So that’s from an exhibitor perspective, is there any way to gauge, at this point, the number of attendees? Marco Momoli: From our point of view, it’s always difficult to give figures about the visitors this far in advance. The thing I can tell you is that I spoke yesterday to the official travel agency of the show, and they told me the hotels in Bologna are almost sold out for the days of the show, that’s a very good sign. We are going to open the online registration form this week, so we will see exactly how we will do. But, for the time being, we are quite satisfied with the number of reservations being made in the hotels of Bologna.

World Brush Expo

Chris Monahan: The relationship is in my opinion as strong as it’s ever been. It’s great. I was over at the FEIBP Congress in September and quite a few Americans were there. The hospitality and the welcoming that we were shown was off the charts. Our relationship is going great and I think it’s important for members to understand that we have ownership in the show. So the ABMA and FEIBP are very invested in this being a success and having our members support it as well. In the U.S., it’s a challenge with the distance, but Alessandro’s on the ground there and he really has gone above and beyond with all the work that he’s put into the show. Alessandro Acquaderni: Thanks Chris, but in the end, it’s always a team effort and I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel the full support of the FEIBP and the ABMA. But I agree with you, the relationship between the two has never been as strong as it is now. Also, we are working on a path in FEIBP. We call this path, “No Man Is an Island” from the perspective of the leader of the company and also the federation. So the active goal is to work together as a European federation and an American association.

That brings up a good point. I am not sure if Interbrush had this, but will the event be an exhibition only or will there be educational sessions, programs and keynote speakers? Alessandro Acquaderni: Historically, it was “only a show” even if I wouldn’t define it as “only” because it’s the meeting point of the world brush industry every four years. So it was very packed with meeting opportunities without the need of building anything around it. But now we are organizing something during the days of the show. On the first day, Wednesday, we will have a brief inauguration. On that evening, we will have a closing party offered by FEIBP, ABMA and BolognaFiere. We will allow exhibitors to have private events on Thursday between lunch and dinner. From Friday on, we are still organizing, but we are planning an experience to allow visitors and exhibitors to leave and have an experience around Bologna. That will be around the Bologna known as the Motor Valley and Bologna, known as a Food Valley as you can read on the World Brush Expo website. So we will offer the visitors of Bologna an opportunity to have this experience. In the next month, we will disclose the details, but what I’m recommending right now is to book your flights back from Monday on. Marco Momoli: Just to let you know, the weekend before the show, in Imola, there will be the Formula 1 grand prix. If someone is willing to come three days before, they can attend the Formula 1 Grand Prix just 15 kilometers away from Bologna. It’s within 20 minutes by car.

24 | www.brushwaremag.com

Marco Momoli, BolognaFiere

That has to have an impact on travel as well, right? I mean, it’s a big event. Marco Momoli: Yeah, it is. It is. Luckily enough, the event is taking place the weekend before the show, so the hotels will be free starting from Tuesday. But in case somebody is willing to come, that could be an occasion to see the Formula 1 Grand Prix, stay in Bologna, then visit Bologna. It’s a wonderful city full of monuments with very good food and then they can attend the show.

Are there specific trends or innovations in the brush industry that we would expect to see at this show? Alessandro Acquaderni: I don’t know yet the trends of what will be the innovation displayed during the show. I’m curious though, as both a contributor to the organizing and as a visitor. Every edition of the show, there was something pretty new, being proudly displayed by the exhibitors, both from machinery makers and components and filaments. The trends will be around energy saving and recycled materials and reducing the carbon footprint. For sure, the environmental trend will be strong in the World Brush Expo. On the machinery side, the impact on the ergonomics and the noise as well as new production technologies to increase the overall productivity and lower costs and lower the impact on the people while increasing the amount of data that the companies will be able to gather in real time to control and improve their processes.

That’s a big topic for trade shows as well. Are there specific ways sustainability is being approached relative to the show itself? Marco Momoli: What we are doing in Bologna, we are trying to build up shows that are more and more sustainable. Of course, we are trying to do our best in terms of recycling materials and products used to build up the show and (in) dismantling the show. At BolognaFiere, we do have a solar plant on the roof of all of our halls that produces most of the energy needed for the show. We are on our way in that respect.

That covers most of the topics we had planned, thank you all for participating and giving us a great overview of progress. Are there any final comments that you want to offer? Marco Momoli: When we had the news that we had been chosen to host the show we were really thrilled but we also were very worried about the fact that it was a great challenge for us. Because it’s a world show, and it is the first show held in Italy in this sector, and the first show after eight years in this sector. We found two wonderful partners that helped us in all ways to give us all the suggestions, all the possible help anytime we needed it. It has been, up to now, and I’m sure will be even for the next months, a wonderful, wonderful partnership. Alessandro Acquaderni: Yes, two closing remarks. One is just to emphasize the importance of being active in the brush industry. And as an association and federation, we are showing that we are active and strongly believe in such an important gathering event. And we invite all our members to take an active role by simply following the LinkedIn page for the show and sharing its content as well as supporting and promoting the event. Second, the show is launching innovations in the industry, edition after edition and this year it will happen in one of the oldest cities in Italy. We’re talking about a city that

was started more than 1,000 years before Christ and it became of crucial importance during the Middle Ages. So there will be such a strong history that will support and sustain such an innovative event in our industry. Chris Monahan: I would strongly encourage everyone to attend. You know, we really are a unique industry in that we truly are global. You don’t see a lot of industries that have that global emphasis and impact. And this is our one show, every four years, where it’s really people from so many different countries, so many different continents. It’s quite breathtaking to see everyone that shows up. That in itself is one reason because all it really takes is one new supplier, one new customer and it pays for your entire trip. I’ve met so many new people at all of these and so many business contacts. It’s more than paid for all of the expenses. And it only happens once every four years, so if you miss this one, you’ve got to wait another four years. For more information about the World Brush Expo, visit www.worldbrushexpo.com.

ABMA’s Florida Trip Looks Toward

The Virtual Future On March 19-22, 2024 the American Brush Manufacturers Association (ABMA) will hold its 107th Annual Convention at the Omni Resort, Amelia Island, Florida. This event features a motivational gathering of brush industry leaders and the opportunity to make new face-to-face contacts and potential business networking opportunities. Notable for the 2024 convention is a modified schedule that effectively rolls the event one day forward compared to past years. Traditionally, the core portion of the event ran Wednesday through Friday. To better manage costs and accommodate travel, the 2024 edition will run Tuesday through Thursday. The Tuesday convention will kick off a program facilitated by the ABMA Emerging Leaders that will feature concurrent Educational Workshops from 2:305:00 p.m. Those workshops include: • Mental Health and Well-Being in the Workplace • Data and Device Security • Attracting Talent to Smaller Companies

Keynote: Virtualization of America and the World On Wednesday, March 20, the ABMA Educational Institute will host a keynote speech on “The Virtualization of America — and the World” by Michael Rogers, a best-selling author, technology pioneer and futurist, who also recently served two years as futurist-in-residence for The New York Times and is currently a columnist for NBC.com. His Practical Futurist consultancy has worked with companies ranging from FedEx, Boeing and NBC Universal to Microsoft, Pfizer and Siemens, focusing on how companies can think about the future in useful ways. Rogers began his career as a writer for Rolling Stone and went on to co-found Outside magazine. He then launched Newsweek’s technology column, winning numerous journalism awards, including a “National Headliner Award” for coverage of the Chernobyl meltdown. With his vast experience, he helps organizations create a vision of the future and the will to innovate, blending technology, economics, demographics, culture and human nature. Rogers says over the next decade, more and more of our work, what we care about and how we interact with others will involve the Internet, intelligent computers and IOT.

Face 2 Face Meetings On Thursday, March 21, the convention will host the Suppliers Display “Face to Face” session that will run from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and provide a unique opportunity for attendees to engage in 15-minute scheduled meetings with suppliers. Again this year, suppliers will bring only what can fit on the table to ensure a level playing field for everyone. The meeting selection process will be determined in advance using scheduling software. Additionally, the ABMA has emphasized that the convention will offer ample networking opportunities throughout the week to meet regardless of schedule.

Discover Amelia Island Amelia Island is anchored by the colorful town of Fernandina Beach with a Historic District of 52 blocks putting lots to see and do very close. Its quaint streets and Victorian storefronts lie between the harbor front and Centre Street. The Palace Saloon, Florida’s oldest bar, features Pirate’s Punch. If “punch” is not your thing, how about a pint of cold beer after a day of fun in the sun (or conference)? At Amelia Island Brewing Co., the first wholly operational craft brewery in Fernandina Beach, you can choose from a rotating tap of 20 or more craft brews. History buffs will not lack places to explore. The Amelia Island Museum of History covers the island’s complex past which began 4,000 plus years ago with the Timucua, Native American people who lived in northeast and north-central Florida. The A. L. Lewis Museum offers a more in-depth look at the story of historic American Beach, Florida’s first Black Beach Resort. A stop at the Fernandina Beach Marine Welcome Center and Shrimping Museum presents more information on the city and the role shrimping has played in its development. Speaking of shrimping, Shrimping Eco Tours with Amelia River Cruises affords an opportunity to see the industry in action by catching shrimp with an otter trawl net and then releasing them back into the tidal creeks. If you enjoy something more “up close and personal,” how about a Kayak across the island? With Amelia Island Kayak Excursions you’ll see more of the island’s magical aquatic habitats on a guided kayak trip. Perfect if you’re coming early or staying after the event, full or half-day trips take paddlers through blackwater wooded environments, salt marshes, estuaries, swamps, rivers and intracoastal waterways.

Considered iconic on Amelia Island, there’s no better spot to visit than the Amelia Island Lighthouse, the state’s oldest lighthouse sitting atop a 60-foot bluff overlooking Egan’s Creek. Those interested in visiting the lighthouse can sign up for a tour (held only twice monthly), or stop by on a Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to walk the grounds. Amelia Island’s most visited attraction, striking the perfect balance of nature and history is Fort Clinch State Park. Tour the Civil War fort’s rooms, galleries and grounds. The other side of the 1,400-acre park is its incredibly biodiverse and visually beautiful grounds. Giant live oak trees lining a dense maritime hammock provide a cinematic setting for a hike where you might spot gopher tortoises or vibrantly colored painted buntings. With Amelia Island’s gorgeous natural environment, it’s no wonder generations of artists have been inspired to create work in all sorts of mediums. Blue Door Artists Gallery and Island Art Association display and sell work from local artists.

Dress / Attire For ABMA events, comfortable and casual dress is appropriate. Daytime attire is casual and sportswear is customary (golf shirts and slacks or shorts for men: slacks, shorts or skirts/dresses for ladies). Evening activities are “nice” informal or daytime business casual attire, and may include sport coat for men; pantsuits, slacks, skirts/dresses for ladies.

With so much to see and do, it can be easy to become overwhelmed. To ensure you make the most of your time at the convention, prioritize the most important sessions and meetings and stick to your plan. Don’t be afraid to step away from the hustle and bustle of the event to take a break and shift gears if needed.

Time for Fun

Attending a convention can be a great opportunity to have fun and explore the host area. Build in some downtime during your trip to enjoy local sights, sounds and flavors. Taking some time to recharge your batteries will help you make the most of your complete convention experience.

US Manufacturing Pushes Toward Growth Global Manufacturers Follow the Trend With Upward Movement in January The Manufacturing PMI® for January was reported at 49.1 percent in the latest Manufacturing ISM® Report On Business® released by the nation's supply executives. The figure represented a two-percentage-point increase from December's figure of 47.1 percent but remained in contraction territory. Timothy R. Fiore, CPSM, C.P.M., Chair of the Institute for Supply Management® Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, highlighted key findings in the report saying the overall economy continued to expand for the 45th consecutive month, with the New Orders Index rising to 52.5 percent, reflecting an increase of 5.5 percentage points from December. Similarly, the Production Index inched into expansion territory at 50.4 percent, showing a marginal improvement from the previous month. Price levels also experienced upward pressure, with the Prices Index climbing to 52.9 percent, indicating a 7.7 percentagepoint increase from December. However, the Backlog of Orders Index declined slightly to 44.7 percent, while the Employment Index fell to 47.1 percent, indicating a reduction in employment levels compared to the previous month. Furthermore, Fiore noted that while the manufacturing sector continued to contract, the pace of contraction had slowed

compared to December. Demand showed moderate improvement, with new orders expanding at a respectable rate, although new export orders faced headwinds. Despite this, the Backlog of Orders Index remained in fairly strong contraction territory. On the supply side, Fiore mentioned that suppliers continued to accommodate future demand growth, although there were signs of stiffening, particularly in supplier deliveries and inventories. The Supplier Deliveries Index indicated faster deliveries for a 16th consecutive month, while the Inventories Index increased slightly but remained in moderate contraction territory.

economic DASHBOARD

JANUARY ISM® REPORT COMMENTS (US Manufacturers) “The start of 2024 looks good. Sales are above expectations, and costs are mostly stable. A few commodities are up in cost due to supply shortages. Many previously short commodities market positions have corrected themselves. There is a real short-term increase in the cost of international freight.” Chemical Products “The commercial vehicle market appears to be retracting a bit in 2024 compared to last year. Forecast sales have decreased slightly in most product segments, with only limited growth related to customers’ competitive sourcing and moves to new technology. Most supply chains, including for semiconductors, have stabilized, with the only major escalation now being transit through the Red Sea.” Transportation Equipment “Business continues to stabilize. Cash flow will be tight in 2024.” Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products “U.S. economic outlook is affecting customer orders, and the current backlog is quite low compared to past quarters. Waiting on potential improvements from the CHIPS and Science Act.” Computer and Electronic Products “December sales were very strong but slower for the first part of January, as was expected. We expect to see steady sales going forward if the (U.S. Federal Reserve) continues to hold rates and suggests a rate cut in the future.” Machinery “Good start to the year. We had budgeted a 3.5-percent increase over 2023. We expect it to be a challenging year. Currently, orders are positive in our automotive OEM and automotive aftermarket business. Our industrial business sector is looking weak at the moment. Still expect to achieve budget forecasts through the first quarter. (We) feel January is running high for automotive because at the end of December, many OEMs canceled the last few weeks of orders to reduce inventory levels.” Fabricated Metal Products “Order backlog, which was at historically high levels, is diminishing due to supply chain improvements and slight slowdown of orders.” Miscellaneous Manufacturing “Demand continues to be slow. Reduction from the second half of 2023 has continued into this year. We are adjusting production to match demand.” Electrical Equipment, Appliances and Components

GLOBAL MANUFACTURING EUROZONE: The HCOB Eurozone Manufacturing PMI

pushed up to 46.6 percent in January 2024, reaching a 10-month high. New orders and output both increased sharply. Export orders declined, but there was still excess capacity at factories. Employment fell but not as rapidly as in previous months. Business confidence was the highest since April 2023. CANADA: The S&P Global Canada Manufacturing PMI

jumped to 48.3 percent in January, up from 45.4 percent in December. Production continued a decline for a sixth consecutive month. New orders also fell but at a slower rate. Companies pulled back slightly on employment and backlogs of work have now decreased for 18 straight months. Shipping delays were reported based on the Red Sea crisis but input prices and output charges still increased at slower rates. Business confidence reached a six-month high. CHINA: The January Caixin China General Manufacturing

PMI repeated the December figure of 50.8 percent to register a third straight month of growth for Chinese factories. Output was solid with export sales growing for the first time in seven months. Purchasing levels showed a strong increase but companies still cut employment but at a slower pace. Supply chains continued to improve and input cost increases also slowed. Business optimism reached a nine-month high. FRANCE: The HCOB France Manufacturing PMI came in at

43.1 percent for January to push up from the three-year low of 42.1 percent registered in December. Despite the uptick, French manufacturers have been in contraction territory since last February. January’s improved figure saw new orders decrease at the slowest rate in seven months. Delivery times extended sharply and purchasing activity also fell. Thanks to lower oil and energy expenses, input prices fell for the second consecutive month. Business outlook was pessimistic as companies are worried about a drop in demand. GERMANY: The HCOB Germany Manufacturing PMI rolled

up to 45.5 percent in January, compared to 43.3 percent the previous month. While the index is still well below the 50 percent mark representing growth territory, German manufacturing has rapidly been climbing from a low of 38.8 percent set in July. For January, the new order decline eased up along with the decline in foreign sales. Employment cutbacks are still in effect and input costs and output pricing are both still low. Business confidence remains weak. INDIA: The HSBC India Manufacturing PMI bumped up

again to register 56.5 percent for January. That was a good step up from the December figure of 54.9 percent. Output and new orders increased to a four-month high and exports also looked

strong. Purchasing activity also showed strength while input prices pushed up to a three-month high. Input cost inflation also saw a three-month high. Employment remained flat, but business optimism reached a 13-month peak. ITALY: The HCOB Italy Manufacturing PMI surged to 48.5

percent in January, up from 45.3 in the prior month. The new figure was the highest since March 2023. Still, Italian manufacturing remains below the target line for a 10th consecutive month. Output and new orders declined at a slower rate while purchasing activity continued a decline that has now reached 12 straight months. Delivery times extended for the first time in 12 months due to disruptions in the Red Sea. Business optimism reached a five-month high. UNITED KINGDOM: The S&P Global U.K. Manufacturing

PMI bounced back up to 47 percent in January 2024 after registering a disappointing 46.2 percent in December. That nearly matched the November reading of 47.2 percent as the country looks for recovery in the manufacturing sector. Output and new orders fell and employment reductions followed along with purchasing and inventory. Supply chain issues also resurfaced due to the Red Sea crisis as deliveries were redirected through the Suez Canal. Still, business outlook was at a fourmonth high.
