A New Year of Growth and Connection Welcome to the first issue of 2026 and to one of my favorite new Brushware traditions, the Second Annual Photo Issue. This special edition showcases the creativity and craftsmanship that define our global brush community. It’s exciting to see each new submission and I am eager to share this gallery with the community. It’s inspiring to see the industry come together to celebrate its work in such a visual way.

This issue also features a key tradition that has a little more history — our annual Top Articles of the Year list, offering a snapshot of the stories that resonated the most throughout the past year. The Pulse DIY Boulevard Returns for EISENWARENMESSE 2026

Anticipation is building for the EISENWARENMESSEINTERNATIONAL HARDWARE FAIR 2026 to be held March 3-6, in Cologne, Germany. One feature that is already drawing significant attention is the DIY Boulevard in Hall 11.1, an industry showcase that has become a must-see destination for retailers and manufacturers alike.

Organized and supported by the Haus & Garten Manufacturers Association (HHG), the DIY Boulevard offers exhibitors a unique opportunity to present new products and innovations in an environment that mirrors real retail shelf conditions. The format continues to resonate strongly with the market as the entire space for 2026 is already fully booked months in advance, underscoring the concept’s relevance and continued momentum.

“Demand for the DIY Boulevard remains extremely high,” noted Dr. Marie-Charlotte Claßen, Deputy Managing Director of HHG. “Visitors can expect a compact but diverse presentation of our industry — from innovative product ideas and practical merchandising concepts to high-impact in-store displays. Since its launch in 2016, the DIY Boulevard has grown from 45 participants to 58 exhibitors in 2024, with plans for expanded space in 2026. Exhibitors regularly represent a broad international mix, including companies from Italy, Belgium, the UK, France and Spain — all benefiting from a central, high-traffic location in Hall 11.

Gordon Brush Acquires Custom Brush Company

Gordon Brush Mfg. Co., Inc. announced in December that it had acquired the assets of Custom Brush Company in Cherry Hill, NJ, and that the company’s operations would be moved immediately to Gordon Brush’s 183,000 sq. ft. facility in City of Industry, California.

Custom Brush Company Inc. was founded in 1968 by Arthur Levit, a veteran of the industrial and commercial brush industry. In 2000, Custom Brush was acquired by Robin Reisman, the daughter of Mr. Levit. Reisman says, “The goal was to supply high-quality American-made replacement brushes at reasonable prices. We felt that Gordon Brush was the best fit to take Custom Brush Company to the next level, to continue our family tradition of individualized customer service, and to best manufacture our American-made line of brushes.”

National Hardware Show Evolves With Two New Events The National Hardware Show (NHS), an 80-year fixture in the home improvement and hardware industry, has announced a significant strategic shift. Beginning in 2026, NHS will transition into two separate events — each designed to better serve today’s rapidly changing product-innovation and sourcing landscape. The move reflects growing demand for earlier access to new products, expanding private-label opportunities and the rising influence of independent inventors and micro-brands.

NHS: Concept to Commerce — March 2026, Las Vegas The first new event, NHS: Concept to Commerce, will focus entirely on the modern productdevelopment pipeline—from early-stage design and emerging brands to retail buyers and investors searching for the next breakout item. With private-label programs growing across major retailers, the event aims to streamline procurement and introduce a direct path for entrepreneurs to accelerate market readiness and secure partnerships.

DIY CON — November 2026, Dallas Launching later in the year, DIY CON is an immersive, creator-driven event tailored to the booming community of DIYers, makers and hands-on home-project enthusiasts. The show will combine workshops, tool demonstrations, consumer exhibits and creator-led sessions that highlight one of the fastest-expanding segments in the home improvement category.

Industry Trends Driving the Split According to RX Global, producer of the National Hardware Show, the dual-event strategy is driven by several key shifts in the home improvement market. DIY participation continues to rise, especially among millennial homeowners and renters, helping push the U.S. DIY segment beyond $54 billion. At the same time, innovation has become far more decentralized, with more new product ideas emerging from independent inventors, hobbyists and micro-brands rather than traditional manufacturers alone. These trends have reshaped how products enter the market and how retailers source them, prompting NHS to evolve its format to better support both early-stage creators and the expanding community of hands-on consumers.

CEO Ulrich Zahoransky to Retire After Four Decades ZAHORANSKY AG has announced that after nearly 40 years in a leadership role, Ulrich Zahoransky (71) will step down from the Executive Board as planned on December 31, 2025, handing over management entirely to Ric Nachtmann (Chief Financial Officer) and Dr.-Ing. Heinrich Sielemann (Chief Technical Officer).

With the appointment of these two executives approximately a year ago, the ZAHORANSKY Group took a decisive step toward ensuring a stable and future-oriented development. For the first time in the company’s history, renowned expertise in technology and management is being combined without the direct involvement of a family member on the Management Board — a significant milestone in the company’s 123-year history.

Ulrich Zahoransky Looks Back On An Impressive Career After studying industrial engineering at the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences and holding positions in accounting and IT at other companies, he followed his father Heinz Zahoransky’s call to join the family business in 1988. He quickly took on more responsibility and, starting in 1991 as a Management Director in ZAHORANSKY KG and from 2003 as a member of the executive board of ZAHORANSKY AG, decisively shaped the strategic direction of the ZAHORANSKY Group. His era was marked by the construction of new production facilities in Germany, India and Spain, an increase in the number of employees from 370 in 1995 to over 920 in 2020, and a tripling of revenue to up to 140 million euros. In addition, Zahoransky strengthened the company’s presence in key markets through international sales and service subsidiaries in the USA, Hong Kong, China, Japan and Brazil — which improved customer service and boosted sales. Zahoransky also consistently pushed ahead with the entry into new business areas such as automation and medical technology, as well as the development of pioneering digital solutions.

Also notable is the long-standing partnership with one of the leading international oral care manufacturers and additional large-scale projects such as the U.S. initiative “Operation Warp Speed,” for which the ZAHORANSKY Group supplied more than 20 systems for the production of vials for coronavirus vaccines.

Core Values ​​of A Family Business At the same time, Ulrich Zahoransky has always stood for continuity and the core values ​​of the family business: consistent apprentice training, for which the company received the “Best Place to Learn” award, employee share ownership in the company’s success, and the cultivation of corporate culture have had a lasting impact on his work. Positioning for Success in the New Year

By Lisa Anderson Manufacturing has been in contraction according to the Manufacturing PMI (Purchasing Managers Index) for the last few years, while geopolitical risks are heightened and tariffs have created additional uncertainty, yet the future is starting to look bright.

Investments and expansions are picking up, which will stimulate opportunities in the New Year. The most successful manufacturers will position for success by preparing for opportunities, mitigating risks and building resiliency and capabilities.

Opportunities are Coming Down the Pike In recent years, the U.S. has seen an unprecedented surge in investment commitments across manufacturing, clean energy, semiconductors and infrastructure. Companies have announced more than a trillion dollars in new facilities, expansions and technology projects, supported by major federal programs such as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act. According to the National Association of Manufacturers, manufacturing activity generates one of the strongest ripple effects in the economy, with each dollar spent creating multiple dollars of broader economic impact. As this wave of investment accelerates, manufacturers that are prepared and agile will be well-positioned to capture new business and expand revenue.

For example, as the U.S. invests in drone production, there will be several materials, components and electronic manufacturers that will have the opportunity to gain new business. These manufacturers will further stimulate demand for rare earths and critical minerals mining, processing and manufacturing. Similarly, an industrial equipment manufacturer that had primarily served the food industry with complex air flow systems saw an opportunity when electric vehicle production expanded. Because they had prepared for growth and actively sought new markets, they successfully adapted their equipment for EV applications and secured a major customer in that sector.

Mitigating Risks Even as manufacturers position themselves for growth, they must also address critical vulnerabilities. China’s dominance in rare earths and other critical minerals, accounting for roughly 60 percent of global production and influencing as much as 80 percent of processing capacity, illustrates how concentrated supply chains can quickly become points of failure. Any dependency linked to these materials should be treated as a strategic risk. Manufacturers should conduct a thorough assessment of their end-to-end supply chains, identify exposures and prioritize mitigation based on impact. Diversification will require investment, but beginning with the highest-risk categories and implementing disciplined improvement initiatives, such as lean SIOP (Sales, Inventory and Operations Planning), increased automation, artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies, can strengthen resilience and build long-term capability.

For example, an industrial manufacturer struggled to keep up with changing customer requests as their work processes required manual intervention to maintain high service levels. Thus, they rolled out scheduling upgrades and focused on implementing MRP and capacity planning tools that were available in their ERP system. By utilizing this functionality, they were able to automate 80 percent of the manual workload, focus high-skilled resources on managing exceptions and they built the capabilities and capacities to expand to additional product lines.

Building Capabilities and Capacities The best way to be prepared for success is to invest in talent. As Baby Boomers retire, statistics show that entry-level workers are not fully qualified or trained to take on their jobs. The only way manufacturers will be ready for opportunities is to build talent. Leading firms are forging partnerships to expand apprenticeships, hands-on training and upskilling initiatives, while also pairing new employees with experienced mentors and creating pathways for emerging leaders.

Cross-training is increasingly essential to ensure agility and continuity across operations. Scaling from modest production volumes to largescale output is not feasible without a robust talent pipeline supported by modern processes, new ways of thinking and AI-enabled strategies.

Manufacturers that take talent development seriously will be the ones best positioned to capture the opportunities ahead.

The Bottom Line As new opportunities emerge, organizations that have strengthened their capabilities and built resilience will gain momentum and capture market share. Those that fail to adapt will find it increasingly difficult to compete in a rapidly evolving global landscape. The coming years will offer an exceptional window for manufacturers that can scale effectively while managing risk, protecting margins and sustaining high service levels. The companies that invest in talent, technology and operational readiness now will be the ones that lead the next wave of growth.

JOHN WELSH EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND Robert Cresser’s brush shop at 40 Victoria Street was a beloved Victorian relic of Edinburgh’s Old Town. Founded in 1873, it was a family-run maker and seller of brushes and brooms — from chimney and floor brooms to specialist items such as bagpipe and artist’s brushes — all made in the workshop above the shop and displayed in the crowded, atmospheric ground-floor windows. For more than a century the Cresser name was synonymous with craft brushing: locals remember brushes hanging from the stairwell, dusty boxes and the inimitable smells of animal bristle. The shop remained at No. 40 until the early 2000s (it traded there for roughly 131 years) and its character has often been linked to the visual inspiration for the Diagon Alley scenes in the Harry Potter lore. Indeed, Robert Cresser’s brush shop is now Museum Context, a retailer of officially licensed Harry Potter merchandise

Stainless Steel Products: Movin’ Right Along

By Marion Keller For Stainless Steel Products, growth has been both a blessing and a challenge, necessitating creative solutions. After three decades as a New York company, the bulk steel wire supplier has relocated fully to Pennsylvania, setting up shop in a newly renovated 38,000 square foot facility in West Reading that provides ample space for future evolution.

Apart, Then Together When SSP was founded in 1995, New York state seemed like the best place to build a business; however, a quarter-century later, new options were needed. Lengthening lead times pushed SSP to expand its inventory, increasing quantities of brush wires in stainless steel, oil-tempered steel and copperbased brush wires such as brass, phosphor bronze and nickel silver.

To accommodate this expansion, SSP moved its brush wire crimping, straightening and bunching operations to a new facility in Mohnton, Pennsylvania, in January 2022.

A year later, though, both original and new locations were straining at the seams.

Space wasn’t the only consideration — running one company in multiple locations was growing increasingly difficult from a logistical perspective.

“Even in New York, we were in two separate facilities and four different units,” says Ralph Rosenbaum, president of Stainless Steel Products. “When we moved partially to Pennsylvania, I was commuting back and forth, and it was a pain in the neck.

Managing it was really tough because I’m only one human.”

SSP started looking around for other alternatives. Finding a building that could accommodate both the electrical systems needed for machinery and manufacturing floor space was a bit of a challenge. Finally, SSP settled on a site being sold by Fortna, a provider of warehouse and distribution solutions using automation, software and robotics.

“It was a manufacturing space back in the day, but it evolved into a sales office,” Rosenbaum says. “It needed a lot of rebuilding and demolition work. We went through several months of knocking down and building up.”

In April 2025, SSP moved completely out of New York and partially into the new facility. However, it was not until August 2025 that the space at 333 Buttonwood Street was ready to house the entire operation under one roof. While SSP still has a few employees working remotely from New York, the company is now effectively based in Pennsylvania — and is expanding its workforce as it settles into its larger location.

“We’ve tapped into a pretty good labor pool,” Rosenbaum says. “Here, people are acclimated to manufacturing. We have more applications, people are waiting — that’s a really good plus. And being in one consolidated space that is organized just makes management a lot easier.”

Room to Run In West Reading, SSP has about 27,000 square feet of manufacturing floor space and 9,500 square feet of warehouse area, with the rest of the facility taken up by offices and conference rooms. Rosenbaum is enjoying certain perks of having a newly renovated location. “I have a door to my office, which I never had before!” he mentions.

And doors aren’t the only welcome new feature in West Reading. In addition to high ceilings and a climate-controlled environment, the manufacturing area has an open floor plan that allows for different areas for specific processes.

“This setup lets us be organized for each of the different processes we do, with breathing room,” Rosenbaum says. “We can actually optimize equipment layouts and set up cells.”

Improved processes are leading to increased output. “Our bread and butter really is crimp wires of any alloy and straightened power brush wire,” Rosenbaum says.

“We’ve improved straightening and respooling, we’ve got several machine lines of crimping — we’ve increased capacity almost everywhere. Power brush wire is in pretty hot demand, so we’re running that all day long.”

And the combination of improved processes and increased space has opened up new opportunities for SSP. For example, the company previously had no room to cut wires to length, forcing it to import them as needed. Now, SSP can expand this capability — and that’s not the only one.

“We want to focus the company on straightening and cutting as well,” Rosenbaum says. “We’re trying to go slow to make sure we can produce a good product. This move gives us room to breathe, room to grow.”

Unfree Trade Rosenbaum is especially glad that SSP has found such a promising new home, given all of the other uncertainties and challenges currently affecting the brushware industry. Number one on the list of those is, of course, tariffs — and the many changes associated with the trade policy as a whole under the Trump administration.

“We draw our own wire, but we don’t have hundreds of machines to pump out the volume. When it comes to customers with high volume, we need to import,” Rosenbaum muses. “The tariffs have impacted us tremendously. You have to pay the duties up front, which we had not been doing before to such a large degree — that’s the biggest impact.”

The uncertainty around tariffs under the current administration isn’t helping matters for the brushware industry. “With the chaos that’s a residual of the tariffs, it’s very difficult to plan,” Rosenbaum says. “We try to absorb as much as we can from a cash flow perspective. What has impacted us most has been the tariffs on steel and copper.”

The ultimate result of tariff increases is typically price increases, as manufacturers seek to push the impact of the higher costs down to the customer. Rosenbaum expects this to occur in the brushware industry over time. “Prices are going to have to increase somewhat. It’s bound to catch up as inventories turn over,” he points out. “It would have been better to plan a transition, instead of saying, here it is, good luck. With all of the tariffs, how do American manufacturers stay competitive globally? How can they even plan effectively with so much cost volatility?”

Looking Ahead Despite the effects of tariff increases, SSP is keeping its eyes on the nuts and bolts of its industry — especially on the parts that are changing. “I see a lot of customers going away from cut-to-length material and toward automated equipment where they have material on reels, but there are still plenty of customers for actual cut-to-length materials,” Rosenbaum says. “Stranded materials result in less customized inventory for the brush manufacturer, but, given the expensive machinery required, the cost/benefit ratio may not be there.”

SSP is also looking to target some new opportunities as it works to expand its clientele. “As we grow, we would like to expand our customer base in other industries we currently sell into, such as oil and gas, biofuels and aerospace,” Rosenbaum says. “We’re also looking at other industries where we could offer larger diameter wires. We’d like to expand our sales of straight and cut wire for larger diameter.”

The new facility is currently operating under two shifts — 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 pm. Moving beyond current manufacturing constraints may require the addition of a third shift, though there are only partial plans in place for that strategy at the moment. “We don’t have a tremendous amount of room to grow, but we could add a third shift and probably expand to Saturdays and Sundays,” Rosenbaum says.

The company has examined potential benefits for its systems from artificial intelligence, but hasn’t settled on an AI strategy at this time. “We looked into some robotics and found out that the machines aren’t as expensive as the software to run them, so we couldn’t justify the expense,” Rosenbaum says. “But, in the future, who knows? I’d love to automate some of our processes.”

On a smaller scale, AI LLMs are helping streamline some non-manufacturing tasks for SSP. “ChatGPT is amazing. I use it every day to format letters, conduct research, analyze lengthy legalese documents to prepare responses, calculate technical results or confirm what we’ve already figured out,” Rosenbaum says.

“Right now, I’m translating these complicated forms from Spanish to English with ChatGPT. Before, we would have had to pay a translator.”

Convenience Factor Rosenbaum and his staff are definitely enjoying the benefits of their new location.

The facility is a convenient commute for most employees, with some living around the corner. Electrical supply houses and big box stores are nearby and easy to access.

“I used to eat at my desk all the time, but now I can go home for lunch, or I go out,” Rosenbaum says. “I’ve got a nice conference room now, so we can have regular group meetings. Just in general, we have more room to breathe.”

US Manufacturing Backtracks Again in November PMI For Italian and the UK Manufacturing Activity Pushes Into Growth Territory U.S. manufacturing activity contracted for the ninth straight month in November, according to the latest ISM® Manufacturing PMI Report. Despite a modest production boost, declining orders and continued labor pullbacks point to ongoing uncertainty for the sector.

The Manufacturing PMI fell to 48.2 percent, down 0.5 percentage points from October’s 48.7 percent. While the broader U.S. economy marked its 67th consecutive month of growth (excluding the April 2020 pandemic dip), the factory sector remains mired in prolonged contraction, driven by uneven demand and trade-related headwinds.

The New Orders Index slid two points to 47.4 percent, marking its third consecutive month of decline following a brief uptick in August. In contrast, production rebounded into growth territory, with the Production Index rising 3.2 points to 51.4 percent, buoyed by residual strength in backlogs from earlier in the fall.

Labor conditions continued to deteriorate. The Employment Index dropped to 44.0 percent, down 2 points from October, as most firms maintained cautious staffing strategies. According to survey feedback, 67 percent of panelists reported holding headcounts steady or actively reducing staff.

Supplier deliveries accelerated, as the Supplier Deliveries Index fell to 49.3 percent, down from 54.2 percent in October. This marks a return to faster delivery performance after three months of slower lead times. Inventory levels showed signs of stabilization, with

the Inventories Index climbing 3.1 points to 48.9 percent, still in contraction but at a more moderate pace.

Export and import activity improved slightly. The New Export Orders Index rose to 46.2 percent, while the Imports Index moved up to 48.9 percent. Both figures are still below the neutral 50 mark but trending in a positive direction. New Orders and Backlog of Orders moved lower, outweighing modest gains in export orders and customers’ inventories. The latter remains in “too low” territory, a signal typically seen as positive for future production activity.

Global PMI Notes EUROZONE: The Eurozone manufacturing PMI slipped to 49.6 percent in November, marking a five‑month low as renewed demand weakness weighed on factory activity. Output and confidence saw modest improvements, but firms accelerated job cuts and inventory drawdowns, while rising input costs contrasted with limited pricing power.

CANADA: Canada’s PMI fell to 48.4 percent in November, extending a ten‑month contraction driven by declining output, weaker new orders and continued pressure from volatile trade policies. Employment fell again, and although inflation softened, business confidence remained historically low.

CHINA: China’s PMI eased to 49.9 percent in November, signaling a mild contraction as output and new orders stagnated and manufacturers reduced staffing. Export demand improved and supplier delivery times shortened, but rising input costs and falling output prices highlighted competitive pressures.

FRANCE: France’s manufacturing sector contracted more sharply in November, with the country's HCOB Manufacturing PMI falling to 47.8 percent. Production is falling at its fastest rate since February, and new orders are continuing a multiyear slide. Employment and purchasing activity declined, though confidence improved as firms anticipated better output in the year ahead.

GERMANY: Germany’s PMI dropped to 48.2 percent in November, marking the steepest contraction since February as new orders turned down sharply and exports fell at the fastest pace this year. Input cost declines slowed, production growth softened, and business expectations stayed below average despite a slight month‑over‑month improvement.

INDIA: India’s PMI eased to 56.6 percent in November, reflecting slower expansion driven by moderating new orders and softer output growth. Hiring and cost pressures cooled, while optimism for the year ahead slipped to its lowest level since mid‑2022.

ITALY: Italy’s PMI rose to 50.6 percent in November, signaling the sector’s strongest expansion since early 2023 as new orders and exports surged. Although firms continued trimming purchases and staff, confidence remained solid despite rising input costs and stretched supplier delivery times.

MEXICO: Mexico’s manufacturing PMI fell to 47.3 percent in November, indicating a sharper contraction as new orders and exports declined and output hit its lowest level since May. Companies cut staffing and purchasing while absorbing rising input costs, and business sentiment softened.

UNITED KINGDOM: The U.K. manufacturing PMI edged up to 50.2 percent in November, returning to expansion for the first time in over a year thanks to stronger domestic demand. Export orders and employment declined, but easing cost pressures and rising optimism positioned firms for a more positive outlook heading into 2026.

NOVEMBER ISM REPORT COMMENTS (U.S. Manufacturers)

Electrical Equipment, Appliances and Components: “Trade confusion. At any given point, trade with our international partners is clouded and difficult. Suppliers are finding more and more errors when attempting to export to the U.S., before I even have the opportunity to import.

Freight organizations are also having difficulties overseas, contending with changing regulations and uncertainty.

Conditions are more trying than during the coronavirus pandemic in terms of supply chain uncertainty.”

Machinery: “New order entries are within the forecast.

We have increased requests from customers to get their orders sooner. Transit time on imports seems to be longer.”

Transportation Equipment: “We are starting to institute more permanent changes due to the tariff environment. This includes reduction of staff, new guidance to shareholders and development of additional offshore manufacturing that would have otherwise been for U.S. export.”

Chemical Products: “Tariffs and economic uncertainty continue to weigh on demand for adhesives and sealants, which are primarily used in building construction.”

Petroleum and Coal Products: “No major changes at this time, but going into 2026, we expect to see big changes with cash flow and employee headcount. The company has sold off a big part of the business that generated free cash while offering voluntary severance packages to anyone.”

Miscellaneous Manufacturing: “Business conditions remain soft as a result of higher costs from tariffs, the government shutdown and increased global uncertainty.”

Fabricated Metal Products: “The unstable market has made pricing fluctuate in a very volatile way; I have had to reduce suppliers for raw materials to maintain a better direct cost structure. Reducing my suppliers has reduced the availability of some items and created longer lead times.”

Computer and Electronic Products: “Business continues to be a struggle regarding long-term sourcing decisions based on tariffs and landing costs. External (or international) sourcing remains the lowest-cost solution compared to U.S. production/manufacturing. The delta is smaller now, reducing margins.”

Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products: “The government shutdown has impacted our access to agricultural data, impacting agricultural markets and, as a result, decisions we make. Optimism for a tariff exemption on palm oil percolated but hasn’t come to fruition at this time.”
