Connecting to the Industry As we near the end of 2020, I am excited to wish everyone in the brushware industry happy holidays and to present the 2020 Machinery & Suppliers’ Showcase Edition. It’s been a tough year and it looks like challenges are on the horizon, but at press time, we are seeing improved economic numbers and a rebound for manufacturing across the globe. We’ve taken a slightly different approach to this annual issue by including a stand-alone machinery section with the idea of better showcasing all of the companies in the industry and providing a bit more organization. And with the sudden and extended hiatus for in-person live events, it’s just one way that we’re attempting to help connect buyers and sellers and offer a strong vehicle for all companies to keep their brands front and center to the industry. In addition, we continue in our efforts to broaden the editorial footprint of Brushware and are pleased to address shop safety with a Four Tips for Safety Inspections feature from Troy Clark of MSC Safety Solutions (page 16). We are also excited to again welcome Lisa Anderson as she tackles efficiency and resiliency in her Supply Chain column on page 12. And speaking of resiliency, Meg Cooper’s new Marketing Tactics column provides great insights and offers a blueprint for marketing your business during a pandemic (page 14). Blue Monster Launches OXY-Clutch and New Website
The Clean-Fit Products division of The Mill-Rose Company has introduced Blue Monster® OXY-Clutch, a new specially-formulated thread sealant for high-pressure, pure oxygen piping systems. OXYClutch is PTFE enriched, provides superior sealing characteristics, is inert, non-corrosive and non-flammable and contains no VOCs, silicone or hydrocarbons. This unique thread sealant has an effective temperature range from -320°F to 450°F (-196°C to 232°C) at pressures up to 2,600 PSI (180 BAR). ABMA Educational Institute Webinar Series The American Brush Manufacturers Association (ABMA) has announced the development of a quarterly webinar series from the ABMA Educational Institute. This webinar series is designed to provide timely and important industry education to our membership that will be beneficial deep within the organization. “The series is designed to provide topics that are timely and relevant to today’s broom, brush, mop and roller manufacturers and their suppliers,” says R.J. Lindstrom of Zephyr Mfg. who is the chair of the Vision 2020 Task Force. “After the 2020 ABMA Convention, a task force was set up to study the needs of the association as defined in the survey results taken during the convention. One of the needs of particular interest was finding a way to increase outreach directly to the membership … to get more individuals involved at the organizational level and to deliver important content directly to the organizational level.” Scott Enchelmaier, ABMA President, says, “We conducted a survey to collect timely and relevant topics and are working hard to develop webinar content to deliver specific and valuable education for these presentations. We are excited about the progress we have made, and are delighted to be rolling out this new and important initiative in the fourth quarter of 2020.” The first webinar in the series “Selling Strategies to Enhance Your Virtual Effectiveness” was scheduled to be held on October 13, 2020.

Hillbrush Makes Further Injection Molding Investment
Hillbrush, the UK’s largest manufacturer of brushware and hygienic cleaning tools, has invested in a second large-scale injection molding machine at its site at Mere in Wiltshire, U.K. The 1,000-tonne Haitian MARS 2 injection molding machine will enable Hillbrush to venture into new trade molding business, fulfilling larger tooling projects that the company would otherwise have to outsource, such as snow shovels, warning A-frame signs, multi-impression dustpans and buckets. Hillbrush installed its first large scale injection molding machine, which has a pick and place robot mounted to it, in January 2020. As well as brushware and its own large parts, Hillbrush is now also able to manufacture medium to large parts for other companies who require plastic products that are injection molded.

Osborn Parent Company Reorganization In August, Osborn parent company Jason Industries announced that the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York had confirmed the Company’s Plan of Reorganization, clearing the way for Jason to successfully complete its Chapter 11 financial restructuring clearing the way for the company to enter an emergence phase. Upon emergence, Jason would be a private company backed by the strong ownership of its existing senior secured lenders, including Monomoy Capital Partners (“Monomoy”) and Credit Suisse Asset Management, LLC, each of whom will appoint representatives to serve on the new board of directors. The plan will reduce company debt by approximately $250 million, ensuring that Jason, and its businesses Osborn and Milsco, will have greater financial flexibility to support ongoing operations and pursue its strategic plan for the benefit of its employees, customers and business partners. As part of the new capital structure and ensuring that the company has sufficient liquidity upon exit from Chapter 11, Jason will enter into a $30 million ABL credit facility with Wells Fargo Bank, National Association. According to the plan, the common and preferred stock will be canceled, and holders thereof will not receive any recovery. “We are thankful to our many stakeholders, including our creditors, customers, employees, and vendors for their ongoing support,” says Brian Kobylinski, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “The confidence our stakeholders maintain in Jason’s long-term value creation opportunities enabled us to reach this milestone in an expedited time frame. We look forward to emerging from restructuring as a financially stronger company, which will enable us to capture the full benefits of the operational improvements, cost reductions and growth initiatives implemented prior to the COVID-19 global pandemic.” Dan Collin, Monomoy Co-CEO and incoming Chairman of Jason’s Board also says, “We’re very pleased with the outcome of the company’s reorganization, and we look forward to working with management to ensure that both Osborn and Milsco have the necessary financial and operational resources to deliver profitable growth for years to come.”

Efficiency or Resiliency? By Lisa Anderson
According to a McKinsey survey about COVID-19’s impact on operations and the future supply chain, supply chain leaders believe it will be transformed. For example, close to 75 percent experienced issues in the production, distribution and supplier footprint that will require changes in the future, and a whopping 93 percent of respondents plan to increase resilience across the supply chain. The pre-coronavirus full focus on efficiency is moving over in favor of resilience. Clients and colleagues are seeing the critical importance of creating resiliency and customer responsiveness in their supply chains. Even before COVID-19, executives were interested in increasing customer responsiveness. Amazon has been transforming both B2B and B2C businesses. As customers get used to rapid deliveries, the ability to change orders at the last minute and return products easily becomes the new expectation. However, prior to the pandemic, the ingrained philosophy to reduce costs and increase efficiencies remained dominant, and so customer responsiveness and resiliency was seen as more of a “nice-to-have” so long as there wasn’t a hit to the financials.
Does one have to choose between efficiency and resiliency? Not necessarily. Clients that have pivoted to rethink how to achieve efficiency and resiliency simultaneously will thrive post-COVID-19. In essence, they need to find an appropriate balance between an internal and external focus; a reduction of costs and an increase in agility; an increase in labor efficiency by locating production to lowercost countries; an increase in customer responsiveness by locating production closer to customers; a focus on the monthly profit and loss statement; and a flexibility with working capital reserves. How should the “AND” of efficiency and resiliency be achieved? Start by understanding the customers’ customers and the associated changes in buying behaviors and evolving customer needs. The quicker changes are understood, the quicker they can be incorporated into strategic decisions, the supply chain network and new products and services offerings. Proactively collaborate with customers and suppliers so that demand and supply can be rapidly realigned to improve the customer experience and increase profitability and cash flow. Certainly, to bring these goals to fruition, pay close attention to upgrading talent and technology.
THE PANDEMIC HAS PROVEN THAT RESILIENCY HAS BECOME A “MUST.” THE ABILITY TO RESPOND AND BE AGILE HAS GAINED IMPORTANCE.
The pandemic has proven that resiliency has become a “must.” The ability to respond and be agile has gained importance. For example, during the pandemic, clients ran out of inventory or critical materials/ components due to disruptions in the supply chain. Having a backup supplier in the same geographic region as the core supplier was of no help. Even if the backup supplier was in another region of the world, lead times were too long to address changing customer requirements. If the backup source of supply was close to the manufacturing operations and consumer demand, companies were most likely still out of luck unless they had consistently ordered supply from the secondary backup supplier, thus gaining priority. The need for resiliency has become clear.

The most successful executives will focus on creating both efficiency and resiliency. If one thinks of the definition of efficiency as organization plus speed and the definition of resiliency as the speed to recover, “speed” is present in both. Latch on to that commonality and find innovative ways to achieve the win-win of efficiency and resiliency. Connecting to Your Customers During a Pandemic By Meg Cooper Marketing during a pandemic is new territory for most of us. Are you having a hard time connecting to your customers? Not sure your messaging is hitting your target market? How do you get new customers? Navigating marketing during a pandemic can feel tricky, but it doesn’t have to be. Below I’ve outlined several ways to make sure your company is still getting out a strong, positive message to your customers while staying on brand and reinforcing your mission as a company.
Know your customer As with all messaging in your marketing, knowing your customer is the golden ticket to creating messaging that resonates. So, during the COVID-19 pandemic, what are their pain points? Are they a corporation or an individual consumer? Is it a concern for spreading the virus? Do you sell cleaning products? If so, tell them why your cleaning products can help alleviate some of the everyday stressors. Are you selling home improvement products such as paint and paintbrushes? How can they use your product to turn working from home into a more productive, inspiring place? Are you selling industrial machinery? Maybe your customers can’t keep up with supply and demand so your machine will help make their production line more efficient and help them meet their deadlines in a timely manner. Whatever product you have, think of the solution you’re solving for your customer right now. Not what your customers’ pain points were before the coronavirus pandemic began but what they are now, and address them in a way that brings you closer to them on a human level.
Transparency makes you more approachable As a company, transparency is a great way to create a more loyal following with your customer base. We’re all going through this together, so make sure your customers know what you’re doing as a company to help others sur-thrive as well as what you’re doing for your community. Are you volunteering more time to local nonprofits? Are you donating materials for PPE? You could make a simple video montage thanking those on the frontlines, and even acknowledging the hard work your employees are doing can go a long way in resonating with your customers.
Incentivize your customers with a percentage giveback purchase If you’re able to partake in this financially, this is a great way to really connect with your customers who may be looking for ways to

support their communities during tough times. Can you give to a charity that will help with remote schooling costs? Can you donate a portion of your proceeds for a certain product to a charity to help provide PPE to frontline workers?
Be available and accessible Are your customers having a hard time getting their questions answered or getting through with customer service? Try using live Q&A functions on your social media to reach those who might be stuck at home. You could also open up online chat support for more reliability and instant access. Be there for your customers during their pain points when they happen immediately as that shows dedication and accessibility when they could just as easily go to their competitors. You want to keep their business, so invest in places where their attention will be and the benefits of connecting with them will go far.
Remember to be real We are all going through this together. Making sure that your messages are human-centric and focused on what your customers are going through (possible layoffs, schooling issues, frontline workers, etc.) can make your messages last longer and go farther in strained times like these. The more honest you can be as a company when it comes to your mission and caring for your community, the more loyal and engaged your customers will be. If you can’t achieve all of these strategies, pick one that resonates most with your current mission and execute it 100 percent. Be amazing at answering your customer service inquiries and problems and lock in those loyal customers. Or, have a giveback purchase that is extremely hard for your customers to say no to because it also benefits your community. Times are tough and making sure your customers know you are adaptable is one sure-fire way to stay in the game and even increase your customer support. Can Your Operation Pass a Safety Inspection?
4 TIPS TO BE SURE YOU’RE READY The word “inspection” is often associated with stress or fear – especially in manufacturing. Surprise inspections can be frustrating and alarming, particularly if any violations result in fines or a temporary stop in production. You do not need to fear inspections if you are always prepared. But, of course, safety measures are not just necessary for passing inspections and avoiding penalties. It is ultimately about creating a safe space for workers, especially in light of new COVID-19 safety precautions as employees are returning to work. To create a safe environment for everyone, supervisors and managers must pay careful attention to areas that create safety hazards in the workspace. Many safety risks undoubtedly exist in the brushware manufacturing industry related to machinery and other components. Here are some simple steps to take that will ensure your shop is always up to code and safe for all workers.

1. Address the Common Violations First First, it is important to understand the safety violations that are present in most manufacturing plants. According to OSHA, the most cited compliance issues in the manufacturing industry include: • Machine guarding: failing to inspect machinery and/or install proper machine guard techniques to prevent injuries. • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) system: not following the proper LOTO protocol and failing to label dangerous substances correctly. • Hazard communication: failing to enforce hazard communication standards. • Respiratory protection and personal protective equipment (PPE): not providing adequate respiratory and protection equipment for employees. • Walking and working surfaces: not maintaining cleanliness. Many of these safety violations are closely tied to common injuries or even work fatalities in manufacturing. Therefore, it is important to pay close attention to the areas that are commonly hit with violations, including workplace cleanliness, PPE availability, machine maintenance and hazard signage.
2. Check Safety Training Certifications Another area often overlooked is keeping up with safety training, especially for supervisors and machine operators. In many manufacturing companies, safety training is only offered during orientation and is rarely revisited. However, a study published by the CDC found a direct correlation between the amount of safety training offered at a business and the number of work injuries. Companies that provided more comprehensive training courses, particularly specialized classes for specific machinery or tasks, had fewer injuries and accidents.

In addition to general health and safety courses, additional training should be offered on subjects like: • First Aid and CPR • Record Keeping • Hazard Communications • Electrical Safety • Material Handling • Hazard Awareness Safety training must be taken seriously, and all concepts should be enforced by supervisors and managers to instill a culture that prioritizes these standards. It is also important that all certification records are kept up-to-date and that safety courses are offered frequently for all employees.
3. Consider Employee Safety Concerns It is critical to consider factors that impact your employee’s day-today life. Take the air quality of the workplace, for instance. Manufacturing can create a lot of dust, debris, vapors and unpleasant odors in the air. Over time, this can be quite taxing on people’s health. There is even evidence that air quality impacts people’s productivity levels. Another safety issue often overlooked in manufacturing is overworking employees. When employees are overworked, they are more prone to making mistakes, which could cause major safety issues. Be sure that employees are given adequate break times and are not overscheduled. And finally, consider other factors that could be impacting employee productivity and health, such as the temperature of the workplace, bathroom cleanliness and water availability.
4. Look for Patterns
Machine Guarding
First, it is key to keep a record of all accidents and safety incidents that occur. These documents are not just important for insurance and legal purposes – they can also shed a light on safety violations or hazards that may not be blatantly clear. Supervisors and managers should be checking incident reports to identify patterns with specific machines, employees or certain situations. This could be a sign of issues that need resolution. Another solution for identifying hidden hazards is to ask for feedback and suggestions from the employees themselves. Oftentimes, managers are completely unaware of less noticeable issues that employees have to deal with regularly. Workers may also have valuable ideas for solutions that can make the workplace safer and even more efficient.

Lockout/tagout refers specifically to procedures used to ensure that equipment is shut down and inoperable until maintenance or repair work is completed. It requires that hazardous energy sources be “isolated and rendered inoperative” before work is started on the equipment in question. The isolated power sources are then locked and a tag is placed on the lock identifying the worker who placed it. The worker then holds the key for the lock, ensuring that only he or she can remove the lock and start the machine. Household brush manufacturing Vertical tufting machines are the best compromise between productivity, ease of use and maintenance and versatility. HEPTA-FM 1200 tufts toothbrushes at up to 1200 tufts per minute
HEPTA The HEPTA is a basic, high-speed tufting machine for the production of toothbrushes. The filling tool is a completely new design, different from any other filling tool type, and it is extremely simple with a minimum of parts and adjustment. It requires no lubrication, maintenance is minimized and setup is quick and easy. All movements of the machine are controlled by servomotors. This new HEPTA filling machine has now also been integrated in the HEPTA-FM machine, which features a high-performance handle feeder and a versatile finishing machine all integrated in one automatic production line that will produce up to 35 brushes per minute with a tufting speed of up to 1200 tufts per minute. The HEPTAFM is very compact for its output, and can be equipped with a wide range of automation options. The brand new user interface features a large touch-screen and easy controls with clear messages in the user’s native language as well as helpful graphics. With universal clamping units and clamping fingers used throughout,

and servomotor controls on all the handling devices, this machine is extremely quick to change-over. For larger quantities, the HEPTA-2-FM machine has been built: two reciprocating filling tools give an output of up to 2400 tufts per minute or up to 4.200 brushes per hour. Even though the machine is of a very compact design, the accessibility was one of the focus points during the design of the layout. Eighteen work stations in the finishing machine will allow a flawless trim- and end-rounding quality. All these machines are equipped with controllers that can be connected to the user’s computer network, and remotely accessed for assistance, saving time and costs.
Flexi Lines For the highest versatility combined with output, the FLEXI machines have been designed as a modular concept, where several modules are connected by means of a pallet-style transport system. Handle
feeders, tufting units and finishing machines can be arranged in any desired sequence along this transport system depending on the product and the output that is required. The HEPTA tufting machines that are integrated will run at up to 1.200 tufts per minute each, and FLEXI lines with up to 5 tufting machines have been built. The modular concept of the FLEXI lines provides many advantages: first, the tufting units can have several axes of movement, such as a CNC-controlled tuft picker-eye opening, CNC-controlled depth movement, CNC-controlled anchor insertion angle, etc. This makes it possible to tuft the most exotic designs. However, the machine remains perfectly accessible and simple to maintain. On top of that, the side-byside placement of tufting units allows for a single fibre loading system to keep the fibre boxes topped up, which means there is a substantial savings – both in investment as well as floor space. Furthermore, the transport system can be shaped in such a way that the layout of the machine can fit available space on the factory floor, and that the throughput of raw materials and finished products is optimal.
Wooden Toothbrush Production For wooden toothbrushes, there are the DR-A drilling machine and the Hepta-DR drill and fill machine. The DR-A is a low-cost solution for toothbrush makers who wish to drill on one machine, and then tuft the brushes on an existing machine. A high productivity is part of the deal with the speed of up to 900 holes per minute. The Hepta-DR will drill and fill the brushes without re-clamping, so that any inaccuracies in the shape of the wooden handles are less important. The same drill head can be integrated into a Hepta-FM toothbrush machine. Of course, product hygiene is kept at the highest level by means of a powerful exhaust system and instant removal of the wood debris that is inevitably generated during the drilling process.

Furthermore, PTt enables entirely new toothbrush designs to be made, due to the very narrow space between the tufts and the edge of the head, allowing the possibility to use TPE (rubber) cleaning elements and a wide range of handle materials, including transparent materials. Product quality advantages are convincing. This includes excellent and consistent tuft retention, and no voids in the head. Also, all bristles of the same type are end-rounded in the same condition, so that all bristle tips will later show an identical end-rounding quality, no matter where they are inserted in the brush.
PTt Technology The new anchorless PTt technology provides the new way to produce anchorless toothbrushes, offering extremely important benefits pertaining to manufacturing, design and quality. The new technology simplifies the manufacturing process, allowing the use of conventional standard toothbrush handles with precored holes. This means only the mold and only one handle component to process. There is no welding, no clicking and no assembly. The output can reach up to 32 brushes per minute.

New Possibilities in Strip Brush Production Progress does not stand still in the case of proven machinery, like the strip brush machine WÖHLER SBM 92. This is what made the latest update of the WÖHLER SBM 92 possible. The new automatic bundle feeding consists of the bundle cutter WÖHLER BC 760 and bundle feeding WÖHLER BUD 300. Simpler, faster and more reliable were the demands on the further development of the bundle feeding. The result was not only further increased process reliability – bundle lengths of up to 250 mm are now also possible. This opens new opportunities in expanding product portfolios and maximising the potential of the strip brush machine.
Expanding Product Portfolios – Opening New Markets To this end WÖHLER has turned strip brush production literally upside down. This is exactly what the newly developed strip brush finishing station WÖHLER FSA 500 makes possible. The hanging processing of the strip brush allows finishing of short fill up to very long, soft fill in considerably higher quality than was ever possible in standard processing of difficult fill materials to date. The finishing station WÖHLER FSA 500 can be readily integrated in an existing production line, or alternatively be operated in stand-alone mode.

From Underdog to Trendsetter
With wood copy shapers and CNC retrofits, WOMA is up-to-date Who would have thought ten years ago that natural products would become so popular, that the topic of sustainability finds its way into all conceivable areas and as a result that wooden items are so popular again. Originally started with machines for woodworking, Daniel Koehler, owner of WOMA Wood Machinery and WOMAtec Maschinenbau GmbH, quickly realized that he couldn’t really land with his woodturning machines. “Turned stair sticks were simply out. In the same way, kitchen utensils or wooden toys were only interesting for a relatively small target group compared to the modern and comparatively inexpensive mass-produced articles made of plastic. But now the tide is turning again: “There is a clear trend towards more wood processing.” You can feel this not only in the construction industry, but also in the household, personal care, decoration and toys sectors. The (beech) wood as a renewable and completely biodegradable raw material meets all the requirements for an ecological, sustainable product and today’s customers are again prepared to spend more money on such a product. But it should also be of high quality and trendy - and must be available in correspondingly large quantities. This is exactly where the newly developed wood copy shapers from WOMAtec come into play. “First we reconditioned old Hempel and Boucherie machines,” Daniel Koehler reports. But these hydraulically or pneumatically controlled machines are now 30 or 40 years old and simply do not achieve the necessary capacity and accuracy even with an overhaul and are also not flexible enough to meet today’s requirements of the market. “So we brought the proven technology up to date and developed the world’s only CNC control for the copy shaping machine with turntable.” Thanks to the CNC control, there are almost no limits to design freedom and models can be changed quickly will. The production of small series can be realized just as efficiently as that of mass-produced items such as wooden toothbrushes. The WOMAtec machine is also perfectly suitable for these filigree articles, as the CNC control guarantees the highest repeat accuracy and precision of the travel paths. The used machines, with which WOMA has been trading internationally for 12 years now, are still in demand.

“What is more sustainable than a used machine that has been given a second life? You can’t save more resources,” argues Daniel Köhler for his machine retrofit. Depending on customer’s requirements, the machine is dismantled down to the last screw, overhauled and equipped with new pneumatics and electronics. The Beckhoff-based WOMAtec CNC control is operated via a comfortable touch panel, in which user-friendliness and practicality were in the foreground during development. Part of the WOMA concept is also to enable the customer to have long-term spare parts availability through the use of standard parts. “We do overhaul customer’s machines or used machines from our inventory.” WOMA’s warehouse includes around 100 used machines and tools for the woodworking and brush industry. Almost all of the work required for retrofits and new machine construction is carried out in the own workshop, from welding and painting to parts production and switch cabinet construction. “We only give out parts for the purpose of refinement such as powder coating or hardening,” reports the owner. The software development also takes place in-house “which means that we can act extremely flexibly and close to the customer.” In addition to the topic of sustainability, automation in brush production naturally also plays a major role in the inquiries to WOMA. A wide variety of solutions with handling systems but also robot technology have been implemented in recent years. Despite the Corona crisis, Daniel Koehler is optimistic about the future: “We have now found our place in the brush industry and are concentrating ourselves to customer-specific projects that cannot be served by the standard range of the major machine suppliers. Many customers also appreciate our customer proximity and flexibility, which we want to maintain in the company through flat structures and a strong team spirit.”

Rolling mill thickness capability is from 0.0043” to 0.250”. Testing facilities include laser micrometers, tensile testers, hardness testers, and microscopes with photo capability for surface evaluations. We also are capable of cleaning flat wire in-house through our new cleaning line, fabricated and installed in 2019.

Stainless Steel Products houses ample quantities of round wire and strip to meet existing customer demands. We can stock round wire in sizes ranging from 0.0010” – 0.375. This can be in hardness ranging from dead soft annealed to spring temper and anything in between. Strip warehousing is for existing blanket orders only at present. We offer stocking services of finished materials for justin-time delivery and blanket orders. When customers have tight on going delivery demands, we use a Kan-Ban system which generates internal replacement orders as we ship processed materials from stock. We can also generate reports on existing open orders and inventory for product planning managers and material buyers. Withforstock deliveries i We also maintain adequate raw materials our further processing. Our processing capabilities include drawing to custom orders in 2-4 w specific sizes and hardness, wire cut to length, straightened, coiled, spooled, crimped, and/or on specialty packaging. We and at friendly service also offer basic wire forming and assembly services.

German Manufacturing Sector Shows Strength September PMI Reports Show Several Countries and Regions Above the 50 Percent Line

While Euro Area manufacturing had a strong performance in September with a PMI 53.7 percent reading, German manufacturers led the charge with a 4.2 percent increase over August to hit an IHS Markit/BME reported figure of 56.4 percent. That represented the best expansion in Germany in the sector since July 2018. Additionally, the new order growth figure was among the strongest reported months since 1996. Improved demand across Europe, China and Turkey also saw new export orders reach the highest level for Germany since December 2017. US: ISM® reported a US manufacturing PMI of 55.4 percent for September. That represented a slight decrease from the August reading of 56 percent, but it was still the fourth straight month above the 50 percent line for US manufacturers. “Manufacturing performed well in the month with demand, consumption and inputs registering growth indicative of a normal expansion cycle. While certain industry sectors are experiencing difficulties that will continue in the near term, the manufacturing community as a whole has learned to conduct business effectively and deal with the variables imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Timothy R. Fiore, ISM® Manufacturing Business Survey Committee Chair. EUROZONE: IHS Markit reported a September Eurozone PMI of 53.7 percent for European manufacturers, which was a solid bump up from the 51.7 reading in August. New orders saw their fastest rate of growth since February 2018 based on improving exports. ITALY: IHS Markit also reported a PMI of 53.2 percent in September for Italian manufacturers just up slightly from the August reading of 53.2. For the first time since April 2019, new export orders rose and notably, the labor force increased in September after 15 consecutive months of decreases. CHINA: The Caixin China General Manufacturing PMI dipped slightly to 53.0 in September after registering 53.1 in August. New orders hit their highest level since early 2011 and Chinese business sentiment improved to a three-month high.
