THE

CAMPANIER issue 2 The Campanier, our non-profit fanzine, returns to talk about itself through the illustrations and stories of the Campania artists.

Taking our cue from Lucio Dalla’s song, Disperato Erotico Stomp, a song written in the 70s with ironic but always topical themes, we let ourselves be inspired, and from the suggestions it came out a very complex subject that passes from the role of sexuality in society to the knowledge of libido in the present day. Months ago we organized a call for this volume, with the intent to expand our connections, and the response was really amazing to be only on our second issue, we received both texts and illustrations.

For our moodboard we chose pink, the color for excellence of sensuality and eroticism. But not a simple rose, but the brilliant pink or shocking pink also known as Schiaparelli pink, named from the Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli, who made this color popular in 1936 thanks to her perfume Shocking de Schiaparelli, whose packaging was shocking pink, while the bottle it contained was modeled on the torso of the actress Mae West, and that color has inspired many of the most important artists, first of all Salvador Dali, who had so much to say about eroticism.

We decided to conclude our tour made also of irony, with a small irreverent thematic horoscope, a sort of wish at the end of this really difficult year. We hope il will cheer you up.

The Campanier covers are, as usual, a tribute to The New Yorker.

isperato Erotico Stomp “(Desperate Erotic Stomp) is a song from Lucio Dalla’s album “Come É Profondo Il Mare” (How Deep Is The Sea) in 1977. His irreverent and provocative text is autobiographical, as the author said.

He tells of the author’s bizarre encounters, after being abandoned by his fiancée, on an evening around Bologna, including a prostitute and a Berliner who got lost. Finally, the narrator ends the day at home, devoting himself to masturbation.

Why we choose “Disperato Erotico Stomp”?

Because our eroticism in modern life is always “desperate”.

It stays in our imagination, it’s our ultimate goal, in our becoming. And becoming is always “desperate”, but “stomp” is the interpretation key of all that Dalla gives to us and that’s the irony, the final acceptance, the conscience, the laughter, that sets us free and indulges into compassion. Lucio Dalla’s song goes deep into our unconscious and becomes a masterpiece of modern opera which is still current in these years.

SEXUALITY AND MASTURBATION INTRO Human sexuality is the way people make experiences and express themselves sexually. Sexuality is a theme often present in the life of each of us, as it is directly related to the reproduction of our species. Besides that, it has also evolved into a social act that consists of the exchange of affection and pleasure. Because of this broad term, which has varied with historical context, it doesn’t have a strict definition.

that concern the human reproductive functions, including the human sexual response cycle, the body’s anatomy, and the reproductive system.

asturbation is the sexual stimulation of one’s own genitals for sexual pleasure, usually to the point of orgasm. The stimulation may involve hands, fingers, everyday objects or sex toys, such as vibrators, or combinations of these. Masturbation is the formal word for this practice, but many other expressions are in common use, such as playing with yourself, pleasuring oneself and slang such as wanking, jerking off, and frigging. Terms like self-abuse and self-pollution were common in early modern times and are still found in modern dictionaries.

A large variety of other euphemisms and dysphemisms exist which describe masturbation.

Sexuality is often made the focus of discussion, probably due to the indecent, outrageous, transgressive, and obscene character with which it is sometimes identified. Especially when it comes to eroticism, our imagination makes associations that combine this notion with others, such as pornography and love. The motivation for this imagery can mostly be attributed to moralistic and religious questions which, throughout history, have structured solid respectability and a rigid formalism of general public opinion, which is much more pronounced in western cultures than in eastern ones. We can cite, for example, Bataille who in his book “History of Eroticism” takes us to the primordial origins of the human being to face a paradox that will lead to the discovery of the concept of eroticism.

His reflection starts “from the animality” that is intrinsic to every individual. He states that he must detach himself from this “animality” and the means he uses is to place prohibitions on the most essential aspects of existence: sex, death, and droppings, which in the most common philosophical language has been used to indicate the limit and, in certain ways, the negative characteristics of human futility.

Throughout history, social norms about sexuality and masturbation, and consequently the resulting taboos, have been changing and continue to change as a result of movements such as the sexual revolution and the rise of feminism.

There were times of sexual liberalization, alternating with more puritanical times. Sexuality and masturbation have been variously interpreted by different religions, they have been the subject of legislation, of strong social controversy, but also intellectual study in sexology. These arguments were taken into account by science only concerning physical and mental diseases associated with them. Among all, the most important is, without doubts, Sigmund Freud.

In our past, especially with the advent of monotheistic religions, sex only concerned the purely procreative sphere, and self-eroticism was lived as a sin against the divinity. But it was not always so: for example, the ancient Greeks considered autoeroticism as a normal and healthy substitute for other forms of sexual relation-

ships, a safety valve against destructive sexual frustration.

Diogenes of Sinope, considered as one of the founders of cynicism, credited the invention of masturbation to the god Hermes who, feeling true compassion for his son Pan who was taken by sorrow for the beautiful Echo who did not consider him of a single vision, taught him the trick of “doing it by yourself ” to alleviate his suffering. Also, we can say that Ancient India, with its cultural works, opened the way to a form of sexual education through art and literature, and is best known for the text published under the name of Kāma Sūtra, written between the first and sixth centuries.

It was with the sexual revolution, also known as sexual liberation, a social movement that happened around 1968, mainly in Western countries, that the traditional codes of conduct relating to sexuality and interpersonal relations were modified. The most important change that came about as a result of this revolution was the acceptance of sex outside of traditional heterosexual and monogamous relationships, which was followed by the introduction of divorce, the repeal of the crime of adultery and honor crime, the regularisation of contraception, the change in morality regarding public nudity, the acceptance of homosexuality, the possibility of alter-

native forms of sexuality and the legalization of abortion.

Today, we live in a historical period in which sex has assumed a special role in society. Despite the sexual liberalization achieved in recent decades, we are still uncomfortable talking about it in certain contexts. If we treat sexuality with discomfort or if we ignore it, we risk having poor sex education, which would require a sincere and open dialogue.

Sex education is the basis of healthy sexuality, it helps people gain information, skills, and motivation to make healthy decisions about sex and sexuality. It may take place in schools, in community settings, or online, but parents play a critical and central role in providing sex education.

Comprehensive sex education includes a wide range of related topics: Human development (including reproduction, puberty, sexual orientation, and gender identity), Relationships (including families, friendships, romantic relationships, and meetings), Personal skills (including communication, negotiation, and decision-making), Sexual behaviour (including abstinence and lifelong sexuality), Sexual health (including sexually transmitted diseases, contraception, and pregnancy), Society and culture (including gender roles, diversity and sexuality in the media).

LUCIO DALLA biography Lucio Dalla was born in Bologna, Italy, on March the 4th, 1943. He had been interested in music from a very early age and used to play the clarinet and keyboards in a couple of jazz bands.

In 1964 he made his debut as soloist following the Italian “beat”, under Gino Paoli’s advice, who heard Dalla’s vocal qualities.

His real success began in the 70s, with great songs such as “4 Marzo 1943”, which achieved some success due to the Sanremo Festival.

The original title of the song was supposed to be “Gesù Bambino”(Baby Jesus) because in those years there was still stiff censorial control over the content of songs, and the title was changed to Dalla’s birth date. In this period he started a lot of important musical collaborations.

Roberto Roversi wrote lyrics to Dalla’s next three albums: “Il Giorno Aveva Cinque Teste” (The Day Had Five Heads) in 1973, “Anidride Solforosa” (Sulphur Dioxide) in 1975 and “Automobili” (Automobiles) in 1976.

In the following years, alongside albums and hits always welcomed by the public, he devoted himself to collaborations with other songwriters, among all Francesco de

Gregori and Gianni Morandi, and he also dedicated himself to the launch of some groups and artists of Bologna’s panorama such as Stadio, Luca Carboni, and Samuele Bersani.

In 1986 he recorded “Caruso”, his greatest success: it will also be taken up by Pavarotti, who invited him to Pavarotti and friends for singing this hit together, and recorded in about thirty versions all over the world.

In the 90s his activity is now full of eclecticism: in addition to the activity of songwriter, he managed his record label, composed music for films, produced TV programs, worked as a gallerist, and continued his talent scouting.

In 2010, Dalla came back to work with Francesco De Gregori during the “Work in Progress” tour and album. In march 2012 he died of heart attack, while he was on tour in Switzerland.

Dalla’s main influences were to be found in jazz, but his songs ranged from folk, as “Attenti al Lupo” (Be Careful of Wolf), and pop, as”Lunedì” (Monday), from Italian singer-songwriters, with the albums from “Com’è Profondo il Mare” (How deep Is The Sea), to classical and opera, as “Caruso”.

THREE ESSAYS ON THE THEORY OF SEXUALITY

igmund Freud was the first to approach the topics of sexuality and masturbation scientifically. “Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality”, sometimes named “Three Contributions to the Theory of Sex”, is a 1905 work in which the creator advances his theory of sexuality, in particular his relationship with childhood.

The essay consists of three parts: sexual aberrations, child sexuality, and puberty. Originally made up of 80 pages, in the following years, it was constantly revised by the author himself, who expanded it with new content. In this essay, Freud traces the beginning of sexuality back to early

childhood, going against the common opinion that it only awakens during puberty. In fact, for him, the first sexual satisfaction is breastfeeding, which will later be replaced by the act of sucking his thumb, for example, and these are the Oral Phase. After we have the Anal Phase, in which the child discovers the pleasure of emptying the bowel. An important concept introduced by Freud is the perverse disposition of children: since the limitations imposed by shame, disgust and morality are not yet present, children can ingenuously show all kinds of perversions.

The oral phase and the anal phase have as pleasure the child’s own body, while in the phallic phase there is the formation of the Oedipus Complex.

The Oedipus complex, and Electra Complex for the opposite sex, is one of the fundamental concepts of Freudian psychoanalysis in this essay, and, starting from that, the psychic functioning and personality formation is explained. At the time, it was revolutionary, because this new approach was born from the principle of psychic causality, according to the unconscious, to explain the formation of the personality.

The Oedipus complex refers to a system built on an organized set of loving and hurtful desires that the child experiences towards parents. Freud defines it as the unconscious desire to maintain a sexual, incestuous relationship with the parent of the opposite sex, the mother for example, and to eliminate the parent of the same sex, a patricide in this case.

Freud uses the Greek tragedy “Oedipus the King” to explain the universality of the ambivalence that the child feels towards his parents, as well as the development of the heterosexual and homosexual components. This question will be taken up again in adolescence, during which a transformation of sexuality and detachment from parental authority takes place. In children, the incestuous fantasy of

removing and replacing the rival parent, the father for the boy and the mother for the girl, is recurrent. A fantasy that would arouse both guilt and fear of punishment.

Defense mechanisms would be a “natural” response to this dynamic, to give resolution to these desires. Defense mechanisms that appear will be different depending on the emerging personality.

In the case of neurosis, repression would permit Oedipal resolution, while in the case of psychosis, Oedipal resolution would be given by foreclosure and perversion of disownment.

Freud connects the Oedipal complex with the castration complex: the reaction to sexual intimidation, the removal of sexual practice in early childhood, the result of the introduction of the norm, the prohibition introduced by the father figure. The threat of castration will open the way for the mechanism of repression of early sexuality, and then allow an exogenous choice in adolescence.

He has given to Oedipus Complex various functions: the identification in an ideal, the acceptance of one’s sex, the access to the genitals with its attributes and personal characteristics, the discovery of an object of love that results from the

resolution of feelings of ambivalence towards parents, the acceptance of the law of the prohibition of incest, and the establishment of the various psychic instances, in particular, that of the Superego as a result of the assimilation of parental authority.

After what we have explained, we can see that the Oedipus complex, for Freud, is part of a triangular relationship formed by mother, father, and son, in which the resolution of this triangle will define the child’s personality, with the introduction of the norm that will allow the assimilation of social and cultural order.

The psychoanalytic diagram of the evolutionary phases of the libido developed by Freud seems to exist only in a family nucleus where the relationships respect this triangular system, made up of the child, father, and mother. One must consider that social thinking was very inflexible on family discourse at the time when Freud wrote this essay. In the present day, it would be necessary to reconsider the Oedipus complex with the necessity of new forms of family and procreation and adapt it to the structure of modern society which is certainly much more complex, varied, and open-minded.

he father of psychoanalysis over the years changes his positions considerably and expands his horizons, and in this way, he arrives at the interpretation of social dynamics based on the dualism between two principles of the human psyche, Eros and Thanatos (Beyond the Pleasure Principle, 1920).

Eros, from the Greek god of love, is the tendency (Desire) to the attraction between the elements: it generates, unites, and warms.

Thanatos, from the Greek god of death, is the tendency to disintegrate elements: it destroys, fragments, and separates.

For Freud, Eros indicates the human tendency to aggregation which acts on a biological and psychic level, and it is the descendant of the li-

bido, linked to the sexual instinct. Realizing, in his studies, that libido alone was not enough, he observed that in society there are not only behaviors to find pleasure, there is also a push towards destruction. To the principle of the reality of pleasure, a life instinct, opposes another, the instinct of death. Thanatos, therefore, becomes the enemy of civilization. Freud’s reasoning starts from the consideration that every man seeks happiness, but nature and society impose limits that often prevent him from reaching the goal, and so society provides activities and attitudes to redirect libidinal impulses most harmlessly.

Some of these activities in our modern society are, for example, art and commercial spots.

On an ordinary day of March, the man looked last long: other women, in other cities, were out onto the balcony and thought of women.

Women were on the other side of the city, well protected by a barrier that no one could overcome, neither on one side nor the other.

Tired of being constantly attacked, debased and judged by men, the women had withdrawn to live alone. The famous “city of women” had first been mocked, opposed, and then attacked.

Finally, by forced necessity, it had been accepted.

The “City of Women” had been founded in a rather devastated neighborhood, but the women had started to work hard. There were bricklayers, carpenters, painters, workers of all kinds. In a short time they had renovated buildings and flowers on the balconies. They had embroidered curtains and music from the windows. Sometimes, on the other side of the wall, the man could hear women singing. They had coined their own currency, they had a flag.

They were free.

The man had always been respectful of women, or so he believed; but, in fact, he had never done anything to make life easier for them. He thought women were overreacting about their problems, until they went away for an indefinite time - maybe forever.

Some men had taken it worse than others.

There were patrols on the streets, erasing any trace of women’s image from posters and walls. Others had gathered together and founded a new religion. The man did not know them well, but he knew almost for certain that they were worshipping a silicone doll.

Man did not miss models nor sex - not the type of sex he could have achieved with a doll, at least. The man lacked the women’s skin and

breath. The man missed legs, warmth, small and delicate hands, hair. He missed the feeling of the heartbeat under the palm of his hand, arms around his neck, legs wrapped around his waist.

It was getting dark and the man stood outside on the balcony, looking at the indefinite profile of the wall that protected women and thinking about the fact that he was missing companionship, desire, an accomplice look in a public place. The man was missing fingers intertwined in the dark and that beautiful, mysterious secret that women had inside of them, a secret that they would reveal only during sex. The man was missing all this, but he was just a man. He had underestimated the women’s problems. He had never taken sides.

He had never fought at their side. Perhaps, if he had done something while he was still in time... but it was too late, it was too late now, and perhaps he would have become like all the others: an angry, heartless man, or simply someone tired of life.

What the man couldn’t know is that, on the other side of the wall, a woman was looking toward the city of men thinking that, after all, she was still longing for them.

But this is another story.

oday we live in a historical period in which sex plays a special role. Sexual liberation started in the 1970s from feminist revolts, which has a strong impact on society’s consideration of sex, and it can be lived more fully than in the past.

Despite what has been achieved, there is still a sort of modesty or discomfort when talking about it in certain contexts. It is experienced as a problem in “politically correct” situations; in the family or even at school it is a topic to avoid, without considering that we are actually bombarded with sexual references, sometimes even exasperated, in cinema, on TV, in commercial spots, and on the web. However, finding sexual pleasure free from all barriers and obligations is now legitimate and morally acceptable, but trying to join this in a lasting and secure relationship is a difficult thing to do.

Our current life, which is based on the mass consumer society, has created a way of living eros and sexuality in the same “consumer” way.

Consumer society continuously promises to satisfy human desires and divides human existence into small, easily solvable problems, obviously by purchasing specific products. These, however, are short-lived and are devalued soon after they enter on commerce, to make way for new objects. For this reason, according to Zygmunt Bauman, a Polish-British sociologist and philosopher, “consumerism” is an economy based on deception, exaggeration, and waste”.

Bauman, in his work Liquid Love (2003), believes that the split between sex and love is a consequence of “homo consumens”, the result of a modern liquid society, in which sexual relations

must be experienced as “pleasant episodes”, but in a consumerist way without sentimental complications. Instead of reporting their experiences in terms of “relationships”, people are increasingly talking about “connections”, especially with the advent of social networks. Sexuality and the virtual world, or social networks, are in close contact, and in this context, relationships become fleeting, mobile, immaterial. Sex, love, and eroticism can be summed up in a single word, sex refers to the animal sphere, love to the cultural sphere, and eroticism in the postmodern world “proclaims itself proudly and boldly unique and sufficient reason and purpose for itself ” (Zygmunt Bauman, The Postmodern Uses of Sex, 2013), they are connected and yet separate.

Eroticism, and autoeroticism, has an end in themselves, in a relationship conceived as a continuous satisfaction of desire, typical between customers and services, consumers and merchandise.

Social networks go to fill a gap and cover the anguish given by the lack of real relationships, but in whose web you risk to get stuck. The “indirect” relationship takes time away from the hand-tohand relationship and allows the same person to connect to more than one person at the same time, without really getting into a relationship with anyone. “When quality is lacking, one seeks refuge in quantity. When nothing lasts, it is the speed of change that can redeem you”. “Connected to everyone, connected to no one”, says Bauman.

Does the cheeky lady know it is inevitable for a man not to look at her busty chest? Is she enjoying this mischievous game or is she really innocent and pure? Awkward silence between the two. While the train is still running and her breast still hopping, the man simulates a mocking depraved grin. What would she think of him? Just another pervert staring at her? The woman surprisingly replies back with a blissful glance, leaving now the breast uncovered and intentionally starting a game of seduction. The man, now self-proclaimed Casanova, grabs her waits, and starts to explore her flourishing flowerbed. Proud of his heroic sexual deeds, and after conquering the lady without much effort, he can now pass on his skills of seducer.”

ur society evolved itself in each century with the discovery of new technologies, changing itself, and changing its routines. Technology and innovation have always come to the rescue of humanity to solve certain problems, and are closely linked to the terms of curiosity and experimentation. Today, with smartphones, computers, and the web, we can connect with many people all over the world. No surprise then relationships and sex have also adapted to this virtual “world”.

Driven by the need to respond to certain needs, from the easier search for pleasure to the need to maintain long-distance relationships, or the important need to control fertility and conception, technology has made great progress.

In biochemistry, the pleasure we feel connected to the sexual sphere is due to the release of several hormones and neurotransmitters, first of all, dopamine. It leaves on us a sensation of extreme pleasure and develops a system called “reward”, a mechanism that makes us want to test the same sensation over and over, which is then the push that allows humanity to continue trying to feel pleasure to reproduce itself.

Technology has influenced sex and has tried to find new ways to better and better activate delu-

sional feelings by combining different stimuli or amplifying them. And this is how sex toys were born, with many designs and fashionable, with shapes and features able to activate our pleasure centers in the best possible way, trying to satisfy everyone’s needs.

At the moment, of course, no technology is still able to fully replace humans physically and psychologically, and no virtual interactive experience can offer a 360-degree sexual experience.

But scientific studies and research are developing, and once again we can say that it is sex that plays a strong role in technological innovation.
