IATULWORKSHOP

The BLA President Pn Nellie and two young librarians, Dyg Noorlaizah from SOASC and Dyg Nur Nadzirah from PTE Tutong were participants at the IATUL Management Workshop ‘What Now and What’s Next’ on 8-9 Nov 2012 in Bangkok, hosted by IATUL and Thammasat University Libraries and attended by over 80 librarians from the technological universities and academic institutions.

The notable speakers were Chamchand Nopbutrkarn, Assoc Prof. Dr Nitinant Wisaweisuan, Ainslie Dewe, Vilas Wuwongse, U Thaw Kaung, Alena Ptak Danchak, Kolap Mao, Chansy Phuangsouketh, Kamariah Mohd Desa, Imogen Garner, Choy Fatt Cheong, Elisha Chiware, Nguyen Chuong and Reiner Kallenborn, IATUL provides a forum for the exchange of ideas relevant to librarianship in scientific and technological universities and academic institutions throughout the world. It offers library directors and senior managers a collaborative approach to solving common problems.

IATUL WORKSHOP WORLD CAFÉ Puan Nellie, BLA President was a Table Host of the World CafÊ session which was held in the afternoon of 9 Nov 2012. Before the discussion began by Dr. Elisha Chiware gave a brief introduction of IATUL, its membership was discussed and the benefits derived from becoming a member. He went on to explain the past projects IATUL had conducted e.g. cross country programme. Dr Elisha Chiware then extended his th invitation to 34 IATUL Conference to be held 14-18 April 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa.

He went on to say that after the conference a free Collaborative Statistics Collection workshop will be

held for those interested. Statistics is an essential and a powerful management tool for librarians and collected by each and every library i.e on membership, volume of use, budget spent, annual additions of materials etc. and is used in planning and budgeting, in support for additional funds and manpower.

Four issues where tabled for discussion: Leadership Academy, Information Literacy, Quality Management, and e-Science research database platform.

A Leadership Academy is important to train librarians to equip them with the knowledge to handle effectively emerging technologies due to the paradigm shift.

An issue raised by Thailand was that graduates from LIS programmes do not want to become librarians after graduation. Librarianship is not seen as a glamorous profession as a doctor, or lawyer. Librarians now need to re-think, re-build and re-brand our profession. Library schools will need to address this issue.

Libraries are venturing into publishing books-on-demand of digital-based materials. It is an expensive exercise and must meet publishing standards but is perhaps the next best alternative.

On information literacy, all universities conduct information literacy programmes. In Cambodia they have taken a step further by not admitting students if they do not undertake information literacy programmes before the start of their courses.

Brunei Darussalam wanted to know if a similar workshop on a different theme could be organised in the future. Dr. Elisha Chiware informed that a request could be submitted to IATUL for consideration. Brunei Darussalam is interested if a workshop on Collaborative Statistics Collection conducted by experts could be funded by IATUL and held in the Southeast Asian region. done by CAUL and UNESCO which libraries could use to jump start the building of a common platform as statistics could then be shared among libraries.

The world cafĂŠ session was a lively interactive exercise where a lot of exchange and sharing of ideas and knowledge was undertaken. We thanked Dr. Elisha Chiware, IATUL Secretary and Director of Library Services of Cape Peninsula University of Technology who acted as our Resource Person.

BLA EXCO MEETING

The President and EXCO members met on 21 Nov 2012 to discuss updates on IFLA Conference, CONSAL projects, IATUL Workshop and the upcoming General Meeting in January 2013.

DISCUSSION WITH THE BRUNEI DARUSSALAM NATIONAL ACCREDITATION COUNCIL The BLA led by Pn Nellie, BLA President, Hjh Rosnani and Hjh Pusparaini met with Cikgu Adinin Hj Salleh, Secretary of BDNAC and its two officers on Thursday 29 November 2012 at the BDNAC office to discuss possible accreditation of BLA’s proposed LIS training programme for librarians. The deliberation was a fruitful one and many issues were discussed.

BLA in its effort to enhance professionalism among its member librarians. It is concerned about addressing the issue of library competencies and skills upgrading of non-professional practicing librarians so they can best serve their readers and increase the use of their library.

BLA will need the strong support of various government agencies to realise this effort. A innovative managed library and information services will increase readership, enhance research activities and promote a knowledge culture.

VISIT TO TK PARK

By Nur Nadzirah Zainul’Ariffin I was in Bangkok attending the IATUL Workshop and on 9 November 2012 I and my colleague Dyg Nooralizah had the opportunity to visit a public library owned and operated by the Thai government in Bangkok. It is named Thailand Knowledge Park (TK Park) which is a complex that includes a Library, Internet Centres, 4D movie Theatre, Learning Auditorium, IT Library and Café, and various zones like the Music library, Quiet Room, Children’s room, Reading Park and Mediatheque, Coffee Bar and other facilities. The branding is striking and colourful, with huge iconic 3D desks we can sit 'inside' and other signages. It is situated at the 6th floor inside the Central World Shopping Mall in Bangkok.

The concept laid out was that of a place of learning that is innovative, accessible, and conducive to creativity, its aims were to cultivate a love of reading and independent learning, coupled with the opportunity to participate in educational activities.

The objectives of the TK Park is to encourage users to enjoy learning. TK Park is a more than a concept, it is the prototype for the modern library where we can make an example for library development in Brunei Darussalam.

TK Park also functions as a cultural hub for youths and a recreational space for a variety of activities.

Even the Park’s physical appearance is designed to coincide with its mission. Its interior decorations create a friendly and engaging atmosphere that encourage es learning and appeals to young people at the same time. Despite having many visitors of all ages, the library is still cosy and restful to the users.

All the zones are interesting to be explored. One of my favourite, is the zone for children which is with the shape of a bee hive. Here the hive does not only serves as a ladder for children to climb to reach for the books on the top shelves (it's a fun of course) they can also sit inside it to enjoying reading. Under the hive there are soft cushions and easy to clean, multifunctional as well and can save children in case they fall down. In particular area there is a backrest portion like sofa style, where children and their parents can enjoy reading and do many activities together.

From page 4 The existence of such a modern library in the city especially in the famous shopping mall makes me envious. Of course I a place like this exists in the Brunei even though reading is still not a favourite activity in Brunei. I observing at TK Park, even though my visit was at 8.00pm, the library was still thronged busy with a lot of visitors reading, studying and in the music room one visitor was playing the keyboard. Children were seen reading and using the computer terminals to find something to read or do. Instilling an interest in books and reading early on and locating libraries in the malls either through the existence of libraries such as TK Park where shopping habits going to the malls can be balanced with the habit of going to the library to read. People going to the malls at the same time can drop by the library. Especially if a love of books is nurtured from an early age certainly has a much more positive impact than the love of video games, tv or shopping.

VISIT TO CLASS 64 LIBRARY

By Dyg.Nurul Fajrina Kamaluddin As part of the end-of-year activity of the Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien College, it welcomed a visit from Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda AlMuhtadee Billah and Sixth Form Centre Katok on 14 November 2012 to the Class of ’64 library, Galeri Warisan, Pre Vocational and Mini Museum.

The group consisted of 13 students and 4 teachers from the two colleges. In the Class of ’64 library, Dyg Nurul Fajrina briefed the students on the formation of the library and later a tour of the library gallery and its collection.

PRESENTATION OF CONSAL PUBLICATION PROJECT: ISLAM IN SOUTHEASE ASIA

The President presented a copy of the publication to the library of 6th Form Centre Katok and Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah on 14 Nov 2012. The books were received by the representatives of both colleges. The publication is a Brunei Darussalam contribution to enrich materials produced under the Congress of SEA librarians grouping.

BOOK SELECTION COMMITTEE

The Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei (DBP) in its effort to fulfil a continuous need to support the reading, reference and research needs of the public has sought the help of various government ministries to help recommend relevant books to DBP library for its library collection development. The Book Selection Committee 2012 met for its first meeting on 13 October 2012 chaired by Dyg Hjh Norsham Hj Yahya, Acting Director, DBP. Aims:    

To support His Majesty’s Titah To achieve Wawasan Negara 2035 To keep relevant collections To establish cooperation and networking between DBP and other ministries

Terms of reference:  To recommend quality and in demand reading materials  To support the strategic planning and collection policy of DBP Library  to ensure the selected materials do not go against government policies  to widen DBP library collection development The meeting was attended by librarians from the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Communications, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Development.
