Jubli Perak 1986-2011 Silver Jubilee Happy 28th National Day, 23 Feb 2012 COURTESY CALL ON LAS PRESIDENT A meeting between BLA President Nellie DPH Sunny and LAS President Gene Tan was held in NLB Singapore on 11 January 2012.At the meeting the President of BLA and LAS discussed matters of mutual interest to strengthen cooperation. Ms Nellie on behalf of BLA also presented a plaque in appreciation of LAS’s cooperation in the Regional LAM Conference held in Brunei Darussalam from 29 Nov to 2 Dec 2011.

LAM CONFERENCE: REPORT OF CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS 1 DEC 2011

The conference participants were divided into three groups. Each group was led by a moderator.

It is resolved that:

1. Libraries, Archives and Museums are relevant knowledge providers that has a multitude of stakeholders. Although the contents may be different in nature but however these three institutions provides collections and objects of national heritage that enriches the culture and identity of the country, Brunei Darussalam.

2. With the advent of the internet, libraries are still relevant agencies by having knowledge workers who are multi-skilled and can produce information to stakeholders in a timely manner. Thus it is important that librarians are continuously upgraded through various ways such as undergoing professional education programmes and professional development training.

3. The National Archive functions as the auditor of government record-keeping. It plays a crucial role in collaborating with all government agencies through the preservation of documents and records of the country and making them accessible to the relevant stakeholders. It is important that records and objects are made more secured through the provision of online access.

4. In using information, people need to be connected to the cultural context of information to understand it better. They want to know, understand, do cultural pilgrimages to absorb the past.

Therefore in meeting society's demands,

museums need to open pro-active channels of communication and commit themselves socially with society rather than hiding under the cover of prestigious knowledge.

VISIT BY PERMANENT SECRETARY MCYS On 14 February 2012, YM Dato Hj Hamid Hj Jaafar was in SOAS College and took time to visit the Class 64 Library. He was briefed on the resources of the library by Pn Nellie Dato Paduka Haji Sunny, the Chief Collection Coordinator/Representing Alumni Class64.

24 NEW TITLES FOR 28TH NATIONAL DAY Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei is to launch 24 new titles during the opening ceremony of the Brunei Book Festival on 25 February 2012 to mark the National Day. The writers are Awg Hj A Mohammad bin Hj Timbang, Prof Madya Dr Awg Hj Asbol, Dyg Hjh Zuslina, Dr Hjh Rayah, Hj Awg Adanan, Awg Mohd Aliyusni, Awg Hj Masri, Awg Sun Tze Yun, Awg Hj Abd Aziz Al-Hakeem, Awg Hj Md Yusuf, Awg Hj Jamaluddin, Awg Hj Ibrahim, Awg Hj Duming@Domeng, Awg Hj Mohd Arripin, Shaikh Mahmud, Awg Srinarawie, Dyg Sabariah, Dyg Fatimah, Awg Kasim, Ak Walliyuddin, Dyg Tainun, Awg Hj Ali Asnan, Awg Mohammad Rezuan and Pg Kamarul Zaman.

SNAPSHOTS OF THE LAM CONFERENCE BOOK FAIR A mini book fair was held o the concourse during the conference. BLA wishes to acknowledge with thanks the participation and the full support of the various book vendors.

Post Conference Workshop Report ‘Harnessing new technologies to rebranding my professionalism in the library and information industry’

The Post Conference workshop was held at the MINDEF Library & Info Centre on Saturday 3rd December 2011. The facilitator Mr Nurhazman Abd Aziz from the Library Association of Singapore (LAS) was also one of the facilitator for the pre conference workshop of the LAM Regional Conference.

Some of the points being discussed from the workshop were:  Any kind of library current awareness may not necessarily be done through digital form. It very much depends on the user types in a library for example: 

Brochures can be distributed on a frequency basis;



Websites, Facebook and Blogs serves as a quick way of promoting our libraries and Go to page 5 communicating to our users;

Creating a more conducive environment for the library users by: 

Dividing library space for collaborative study and private study in order to avoid interference against noise;



Providing a cafeteria within the library with wireless access;



Providing edutainment facilities such as TV, Video or Astro channels for an educational learning experience;



Frequent discussions with library staff members as a way of channelling ideas and solving any problems.



A library head should welcome ideas proposed by support staff. Any suggestions should be discussed rationally and tabled out with other heads.



Support staff should always try be open minded when ideas are not accepted by their heads.

Any new ideas should be introduce on o gradual basis without interfere any standard or normal procedures.



To always keep the library building and interior clean and welcoming by considering the structure and size of the building. The arrangement of shelves and furnitures should be carefully considered according to the building space.

The workshop was attended by about 30 senior and chief librariasn from various government departments and minsiteries. Dyg Hjh Pusparaini on behalf of BLA closed the workshop and thanked the facilitator and participants.

18th SPECIAL WOMEN’S GATHERING TO MARK MAULIDUR RASUL Her Majesty the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha consented to present Bakti Hijrah Awards to four women leaders for their excellent contribution to the community.

The awardees were Datin Hjh Fatimah DSS Hj Abg Razali, Datin Hjh Duratul Ain Hj Bakar, Dyg Hjh Aminah Hj Siling, and Dyg Hjh Kertini Orang Kaya Pekerma Setia Diraja Abg Hj Hanifah.

BLA joins in to congratulate all the awardees.

BLA President Pn Nellie and EXCO members were guests at the gathering held on 9 February 2012 at the Plenary Hall, ICC. Members later adjourned for a luncheon at Datin Hjh Fatimah’s residence in Kg Lambak.

ISLAM IN ASEAN: A CUTURAL BIBLIO

1 AGENDA CONFERENCE

Pn Nellie DPH Sunny representing the Brunei Darussalam Council on Social Welfare was in the three member Brunei Darussalam Delegation in attending the conference on Regional Dialogue on Access to Elections for Persons with Disabilities with the theme ‘enhancing the role and participation of persons with disabilities; promoting election access for all’ held on 1-2 February 2012 in Jakarta, Indonesia. It was organized by the Indonesian Persons with Disabilities Association and AGENDA in cooperation with the International Foundation for electoral systems, Voter Education Network and the Centre for Election Access of citizens with disabilities and funded

by USAID and IFES and attended by experts and participants from ASEAN member states and Timor Leste.

AGENDA is a two year regional network project formed to improve access to political and electoral opportunities for persons with disabilities in Southeast Asia and for improved data collection.
