The newly built Theobalds Enterprise Centre has opened its doors to small and medium-sized businesses to complement activities in the Hoddesdon Enterprise Centre.

The new Centre is an exciting addition to the Borough and its hitech build is expected to attract a number of growing enterprises.

In recent months we have also witnessed the birth of Love Waltham Cross, a new town centre branding which aims to bring together the community and share information about initiatives, events and history. The new identity goes hand in hand with the Council’s regeneration programme (funded by the Government’s Levelling Up Fund) which has so far seen the opening of the new and improved Community Hub, a new skate park in Waltham Cross Playing Fields and a Living Wall along Monarchs Way. You can find out more about these projects inside.

Sports Centre has been announced as a recipient of the Swimming Pool Support Fund. This will help to ensure that future generations of the Borough can continue to enjoy swimming.

Most importantly, at a time where social support is so valuable, it has been encouraging to see communities from across the Borough come together at local events such as the outdoor cinemas, exhibitions at Lowewood Museum, the Celebrating Our Community event, Summer of Fun and Vintage Vehicle Displays, among many others that have taken place this year. We can now look forward to coming together at community Christmas events including this year’s panto, Cinderella, at the Spotlight Theatre.

With so much on the go, I look forward to seeing what else is in store for the year ahead.

Levelling Up Waltham Cross Following the Council’s successful bid to the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, the regeneration of Waltham Cross town centre is full steam ahead.

Modern look and feel for the town centre Final designs to improve the look and feel of the town centre are being produced and a tender process has just been completed.

Works are due to start in spring 2024.

The improvements, which have been designed in consultation with local residents, visitors and businesses, will transform the heart of the town. Improved pedestrian and cycle access, plus a more modern look and Living Wall feel is expected to improve trade for existing shops and businesses, and provide a more attractive environment for new businesses to set up. Reopening the northern end of the High Street to light vehicles and the creation of short stay parking bays will encourage people to visit and improve the perception of safety in the town.

A new Living Wall has been completed on the large brick wall facing Monarchs Way. This not only provides an attractive entrance into Waltham Cross, but also helps to improve air quality in the local area. As with any living feature, it will take time for the wall to fully develop, so by the spring next year it should be in full bloom.

Community Hub relaunch The Community Hub in the High Street has been extensively refurbished and is now an accessible, multi-functional space, offering a new IT suite, equipped with modern technology to provide training, particularly for digital and basic skills. Staff will support unemployed people into employment, train local people in numeracy skills and assist people to obtain Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications.

Training and employment support provided at the Hub will help local residents gain the skills they need to access the new employment opportunities coming to the Borough from major projects such as Sunset Studios and Brookfield Riverside. This in turn will improve the economic prosperity of residents and local businesses.

Waltham Cross Playing Fields Improvements to Waltham Cross playing fields aim to improve the health and wellbeing of the local community.

The Council, working in partnership with Maverick Industries, has built a new modern skate park for people of all ages to enjoy. New play and outdoor gym equipment is in the process of being installed and the sports pavilion will be refurbished in the New Year. Drainage works to the football pitch are programmed for after the end of the football season.

Love Waltham Cross ‘Love Waltham Cross’ is a new initiative which aims to engender pride in Waltham Cross as a great place to live, visit and do business. Dedicated social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) have been set up which focus on what the town has to offer and provides the opportunity for visitors, residents and businesses to hear about and share information on what is happening in the local area.

Help with the Cost of Living If you are struggling this winter, there is plenty of support available locally.

Herts Help If you are in crisis and need help, you can call Herts Help on 0300 123 4044 or visit www.hertshelp.net/ hertshelp.aspx.

(CHEXS, HABS and BCW School Partnership), Citizens Advice Broxbourne and B3Living.

There are also breakfast clubs providing free meals to anyone in the community who needs them.

The Cross Breakfast Club operates from Christ Church in Waltham Cross on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 7am to 10am.

Food Aid There are a number of food banks operating in the Borough of Broxbourne: The Broxbourne Foodbank distributes food from Wormley Free Church and St. Joseph’s Church Hall (Waltham Cross). You must be referred by a professional to receive support.

The Food Pantry offers fresh food provisions on the last Tuesday of the month at Rosedale Community Church, 1.30-3.30pm.

The OK Foundation operates from Goffs Oak Methodist Church on Wednesdays (1-3pm). They provide food, toiletries and household essentials as well as Vodafone SIM cards.

The Porch Pantry at Christ Church in Waltham Cross provides food and hygiene essentials throughout the day Monday-Thursday.

Many of these agencies can also provide assistance for those struggling to pay fuel bills, as can the three Local School Partnerships

Warm Spaces Churches Together is providing warm spaces throughout the Borough where residents can get warm drinks, simple meals, activities and company.

The Big Local Breakfast Club is at Wormley Community Centre from 7.45-8.30am, Monday-Friday.

The Centre also offers a Brunch and Board Games session on Wednesdays 11am-1pm where low cost meals and drinks are available.

New River Path reopens Work to upgrade the 7km cycle and walking pathway along the New River is now complete.

Many everyday items are not recyclable. For example, plastic grocery bags, hard moulded plastic packaging and plastic wrap. It is possible however to reduce the amount of waste produced by purchasing wisely, which in turn can save money.

Although most cans and bottles can be recycled, they require a lot of energy to produce and ship to bottling facilities, and then onward delivery to stores. Many people have made the switch to reusable bottles and cups but do not use them all the time.

Most types of glass can be recycled an endless number of times without losing purity or quality, however, not all glass can be recycled together. Solar Together

Broxbourne Borough Council is working with E.ON to help residents receive fully funded energy-saving home improvements through the national Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme.

Under the scheme, eligible households can receive energy efficiency measures such as wall, loft and underfloor insulation, heating controls, and low-carbon heating systems, for FREE. These measures will reduce energy bills, prevent damp, reduce heat loss, lower your carbon footprint and improve the property’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating, making it more attractive to buyers.

After a pilot earlier this year in Waltham Cross, Rosedale and Bury Green, the scheme has now been extended to cover all of the Borough. Homeowners may be eligible for this support if their home has an EPC rating of D, E, F or G and: - the homeowner receives benefits, or - the household income is less than £31,000, or - a household member receives free school meals, or - has been identified by their doctor as having a health condition impacted by living in a cold home

As a result of the installer auction that took place in midSeptember, Envo Energy has been appointed as the installer for homes in the area.

Personal recommendations have been sent to all those who registered. It is estimated that the average saving will be around 34% compared to the typical market price. All installations will be completed by the end of June 2024.

If you missed out on joining this round, it is expected that the offer will be available again next year.

Solar Together Hertfordshire is a countywide groupbuying initiative that helps home owners and small or medium-sized businesses purchase and install solar panels and solar batteries at a reduced cost. The scheme went live at the end of August and over 200 expressions of interest were made by Broxbourne residents.

Kidz Klub is an Ofsted registered holiday playscheme run by the Council, providing a safe, fun and stimulating environment for children from age 4* to 12. A variety of activities are on offer each day including sport, dance, team games, treasure hunts, soft play, trampolining, swimming, arts, crafts and much more.

In June 2024 Hoddesdon will host a Midsummer Festival. Running from Saturday 15 June until Monday 24 June, the festival is being co-ordinated by Love Hoddesdon BID and is supported

by Broxbourne Council, Lowewood Museum, the Spotlight, Hoddesdon Library, Friends of Barclay Park, Broxbourne Arts Forum, schools and churches.

GET ACTIVE IN 2024 Whether you are looking to take up a new hobby, participate in organised sports sessions, or simply enjoy the great outdoors, there is something for everyone in Broxbourne in the coming year.

Active Herts

Broxbourne Council’s Active Herts programme helps those who are at risk of cardiovascular diseases or who are experiencing mild to moderate mental health conditions.

Since its launch it has supported over 2,500 residents to improve their health and wellbeing through exercise, including swimming, health walks, low impact circuits and stretch and relax classes.

Each participant who meets the programme’s criteria will receive six weeks of free activity. Active Herts is so popular that after the free six weeks, many participants continue with the programme paying a small fee.

To be eligible for the Active Herts programme, you need to answer ‘yes’ to the following questions: • Do you currently do less than 30 minutes of physical

activity (that raises your breathing) each week?

• Are you over 16 years of age?

• Do you live in the Borough of Broxbourne?

The Opportunities for Excellence Scheme: Opportunities for Excellence: Empowering Dreams The Council’s Opportunities for Excellence Scheme supports talented local athletes with a year’s membership to a local leisure centre to help towards their training and development.

Eligible youngsters must be of a county standard or above in a recognised sport, reside within the Borough, and must be aged 11 years or above.

The deadline to apply for the Opportunity for Excellence scheme is Sunday 31 March 2024.

In the past year, athletes from the Borough of Broxbourne have made a significant impact on the global stage, all of whom have benefited from the Council’s Opportunities for Excellence Scheme.

One of the most accessible ways to get active is through walking, and Broxbourne offers a variety of walking programmes to suit your preferences and fitness level.

These programmes can be found at www.broxbourne. gov.uk/community/walking and include: Wellbeing Walks: These short leisurely walks are free to attend and contribute to physical and mental wellbeing.

Leisure Walks: Medium-level leisure walks are perfect for those looking for a moderately challenging walk.

Guided Walks: A longer, guided walk, exploring the beauty of the wider area while helping you to stay active.

Parkrun

Cheshunt Junior Parkrun, held every Sunday at 9am in Cheshunt Park, is a 2K run designed for children and young people aged 4-14 years. Parents and guardians

are welcome to participate or cheer from the sidelines. Barclay Parkrun, held every Saturday at 9am in Barclay Park, Hoddesdon, is a 5K timed run open to serious runners, beginners, walkers, and families with strollers.

Laura Trott Leisure Centre has added the Elevate Circuit to its range of fitness equipment.

Elevate is designed to be simple and intuitive to use, yet challenging for all fitness levels and features five different pieces of equipment to take you from beginner to advanced level.

Park Play Enjoy free family fun with Hertfordshire’s first Park Play, that takes place on Saturdays at Cedars Park, 10am-12noon.

This initiative encourages making friends, having fun, and staying active. It is suitable for everyone, regardless of fitness level, and requires no prior experience. To join in the fun simply register once at www.park-play.com.

Studio Escape hosts short courses and workshops in floorbased practices such as Yoga, Pilates, and relaxation. With a maximum group size of nine, instructors can give individual attention to those in the class.

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL in the Borough of Broxbourne 1950s–1970s

Cliff Richard might be the name that springs to mind if you think about famous musicians with roots in the Borough of Broxbourne, but the Borough has a wealth of other big name rock ‘n’ rollers.

Lowewood Museum is celebrating some of the musicians and groups that hailed from the area in its current exhibition that runs until 1 June 2024.

Covering the 1950s-1970s, ‘Borough Beats’ explores the early days with skiffle music and the local boys’ clubs where many musicians and groups started their careers. The exhibition features groups such as Buster Meikle and the Daybreakers, The Roulettes, Unit 4 +2, The Stalagmites, Argent, Humble Pie, Jerry Hudson and The Eltones and many others. Visitors can listen to musicians reminiscing about performing locally. There will be an accompanying calendar of events to run alongside the exhibition throughout that time. ‘Borough Beats’ is part of the museum’s larger National Lottery Heritage Fund project ‘Your Heritage, Your Museum’.

and Heritage Strategy

A new arts, culture and heritage strategy for the Borough has been agreed.

There are six themes within the strategy, each of which will bring different benefits to Broxbourne residents, organisations and businesses.
