SUSTAINABILITY May 2024
One of our goals is to make impactful design with less impact. With history rooted in landscape architecture, we're keenly aware of our footprint on the environment.
We leverage a wide range of performance modeling tools in an integrative design process that enables our project teams to dream bigger and accomplish the most challenging sustainable goals for our clients and partners. our philosophy
We are both scientific and artistic, methodical, and creative, and we develop designs that impress visually and function appropriately — on time and within budget.
We listen, adapt to, and assimilate client needs. By immersing ourselves in a project’s challenges and opportunities, we design solutions that meet (and exceed) expectations.
We collaborate — with our clients and with each other. Our expertise helps us operate better, design smarter, and be more cost savvy.
We value every vision. We’re committed to cultivating a diverse, equitable and inclusive team that makes one another better and our collective work stronger.
We push the envelop but never an agenda. We bring our own ideas to the table, but we’re ever mindful of our clients’ overarching goals and budget. No ego will get in the way of your plans coming to fruition.
We are Designers of Possibility.

Design and Construction Standards
Every project is limited by finite resources, whether time, money, personnel, access to good, and so on. As such, the minimum project requirements matter. Browning Day knows that clear, measurable, achievable sustainability objectives and make or break a project's success. These objectives are often issued and reinforced through design and construction standards. Browning Day can help your team define sustainability objectives that contribute to a comprehensive standard or stand-alone as unique set of project requirements.

Endress Hauser
Greenwood, Indiana
The Endress + Hauser Group is a global leader in process automation measurement instrumentation, services, and solutions for industrial process engineering.
The new Endress + Hauser facility in Greenwood, Indiana will house the Projects, Solutions and Innovation Center. It will also house the offices and industrial operations of G.E. Booth; a partner company with Endress + Hauser that provides industrial testing and automation systems using equipment manufactured by Endress + Hauser.
The building includes offices, training rooms, employee amenities, innovation classroom and lab for school-age students, warehousing, and light industrial assembly and testing areas. The building is over 120,000 square feet spread over two floors. The project is designed to achieve LEED Silver certification. The all-electric facility is powered by roofmounted solar photovoltaic panels. Heating and Cooling are provided via ground source geothermal heat pumps. The building envelope is superinsulated to maximize energy efficiency. Daylighting is provided throughout the building to reduce the need for electric lighting.
The facility is designed to create a space for high flexibility in order to enhance education and collaboration. For example, windows are created in the industrial/manufacturing areas. The design will also celebrate Endress + Hauser's own instruments by utilizing them in measuring and tracking the building's sustainability efforts. For example, integrating Endress + Hauser instruments to display the energy savings from the use of solar panels.

Budgetary Constraints
Every project has a budget. However, coming to the table with an invalid cost model that does not capture the highperformance and sustainability ambitions of a project and set a team up for competing outcomes that may not be able to be reconciled. Conversely, a cost model that recognizes the give-and-take initial costs versus life cycle costs will set a team up for optimized solutions. Browning Day champions an integrative design process through which stakeholders and project contributors are brought together early and often. Our process prompts the entire design team to go beyond rules-of-thumb to leverage building performance modeling as a design assist tool, which enables teams to make better-informed design decisions.

“Browning Day listened to us describe the kind of environment we wanted to work in which included different materials and our brand colors, and they were able to design a space that took our vision to a whole new level. Our new facility has really added to our company culture and positioned our brand as forward thinking. Our employees and clients love the space."
- Kevin Flynn President at CVR
Understanding Energy Loads
Recent data is showing that as our buildings get more energy-efficient, the proportion of energy consumption coming from equipment and gadgets we plug is on the rise and now may constitute between 30% and 40% of the building's energy usage. Browning Day knows that our clients are best served by having a realistic definition of the plug loads and process loads in their projects. This sets more accurate expectations and helps our project teams better prepare for how the building will likely use energy. This understanding starts with accurate programmingincluding data on equipment requirements.

The Heritage Group came to Browning Day seeking a design for their new space that would tell the company's story, provide centralized "incubating" spaces where ideas can grow. We also designed their workplace to celebrate the company's identity, cultivate flexible work environment where employees
are given the freedom to move and work in a variety of indoor/ outdoor spaces and offer a functional laboratory space. This new corporate center needed to be a place to grow, innovate, learn and collaborate.

Through high-performance design optimization, Browning Day and its partners have saved clients an average of :
$0.39/SF per year
through 2 million SF LEED certified work and that is before we add renewable energy.
Renewable Energy
Browning Day's deep experience into high-performance design has consistently demonstrated that dollar-for-dollar, the best investment of high-performance buildings is in the architecture and building systems. However, once the building is as energy-efficient as possible, what happens next? Enter renewable energy systems. With thoughtful, well-designed renewable energy systems, projects can bridge the gap from high-performance to net-zero energy and carbon objectives. Renewable energy systems might be best suited on-site, at the district/campus level, or off-site.

Accountability
“I think the Global and International Studies Building is a thoughtfully made space, a striking addition to our campus where we are fortunate enough to inhabit this architectural aesthetic every day.
Great architecture gives you a sense of well-being often without your explicit knowledge. If you pause in the three-story glass atrium or the classrooms that are filled with natural light and overlook the arboretum, you know that the Global and International Studies Building is destined to be one of those places that bring people back to IU.”
- Larry Singell Executive Dean of IU CASE, Indiana University Bloomington
Browning Day understands the impact of holding design and construction teams accountable to meeting project goals. By leveraging green building certification, commissioning, and performance verification, our project teams can help ensure that our clients get what they think they are paying for. In order to achieve this, an owner's project requirements must have clearly scoped services and clearly stated sustainability objectives.
