NEW ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

While The Brooklyn Hospital Center is proudly local—we are, in fact, the borough’s first hospital—we are cultivating a growing national reputation for quality. Over the past few years, we’ve earned multiple awards that attest to our focus on excellence, all of which reflect the hard work and dedication of our entire team. I’m very proud to tell you about some new recognitions we earned this summer:

TBHC has been ranked #25 in acute care by the Lown Institute. Their index examines hospital social responsibility, calculating scores across 53 different metrics to capture performance in health outcomes, value and equity. This ranking, which included 128 hospitals in New York State, reflects TBHC’s efforts to improve patient outcomes, enhance

safety protocols and maintain high standards of clinical excellence.

In addition, we have received an American Heart Association Get with the Guidelines Gold Plus medal in Stroke Care with an Honor Roll citation in Diabetes Type 2 care. This recognition underscores TBHC’s comprehensive approach to stroke treatment and rehabilitation, ensuring that patients receive the best possible care during critical moments, and acknowledges the work we’ve done to prevent stroke in patients with diabetes.

Furthermore, U.S. News & World Report has recognized five of our specialty programs: Cardiology, Diabetes, Nephrology, Orthopedics and Pulmonology. All have been cited as high-performing for their patient outcomes and innovative treatments.

These examples highlight our commitment to quality and patient care and are in line with our dedication to Keeping Brooklyn Healthy. Keep up the good work!

Journey to Magnet Recognition: TBHC Nursing is seeking to become a Magnet Recognition Program, by which the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) designates organizations worldwide where nursing leaders successfully align their nursing strategic goals to improve the organization’s patient outcomes. The Magnet Recognition Program provides a roadmap to nursing excellence, which benefits the entire organization. The ANCC vision communicates the importance of Magnet organizations in shaping future changes that are essential to the continued development of the nursing profession and to quality outcomes in patient care. This is a many-year journey, which has already started with changes in committees and councils, including creating unit-based councils on the floors. Shown here is the pillars by which the journey is planned.

NICU Caps Donated: In memory of her late son, who passed in 2012 after 10 days in our NICU, Shameka Brown donated hand-crocheted caps and blankets.“The staff was so loving to me. I’m forever grateful for their care for my son and myself,” she wrote to Sakibeh Mustafa, Community Liaison. Ms. Brown is shown here next to Lenny Singletary, SVP (far left). Ms. Mustafa is shown, far right. The rest of the group is from Ms. Brown’s crochet circle.

You may have noticed this poster on bulletin boards at the hospital and throughout our offsites. The QR code will help you access a comprehensive guide to rights in the workplace in New York City, recently published by The New York Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP).

The Workers Bill of Rights includes information on the rights enforced by DCWP, such as Paid Safe and Sick Leave, Temporary Schedule Changes and Fair Workweek Law, and New York City’s Delivery Worker Laws. It also includes information about the rights enforced by other state and federal agencies, such as minimum wage and the right to organize. Additionally, it includes information about who to contact for more information or with questions, including how employees can file a complaint.

ONE

in the neighborhood

Kelvin is our first child and my wife wanted to deliver at a hospital close to home. I did some research and discovered that TBHC (which was right across from our home), had all the modern equipment and quality care with private maternity rooms. After hearing recommendations from trusted family and friends, we went with TBHC to deliver our baby and it proved to be the right choice.

ONE PATIENT’S EXPERIENCE

Our experience at TBHC for the delivery was nothing short of exceptional. The entire team provided exemplary care, demonstrating expertise and a genuine concern for us. I really appreciated everyone’s friendly demeanor and the time they took to address all of our concerns, even the admittedly silly ones. The entire process felt personalized and supportive.

I would confidently choose TBHC again as my family continues to grow. In fact, we now bring Kelvin to the Pediatrics Department, and are as equally happy with that care!

Healing Fast With Robotic Hernia Surgery

My experience with hernia surgery at TBHC was truly outstanding. From the moment I received the initial diagnosis to the follow-up care after surgery, I felt supported and cared for every step of the way.

When I first learned about my hernias, my urologist suggested surgery, considering my active lifestyle as a photographer. After discussing my options and seeking advice from a friend who knew the hospital well, I decided to go with TBHC’s robotic surgery, because the recovery would be faster and with less chance of complications.

Leading up to the surgery, I was understandably nervous. However, the hospital staff alleviated my fears. They provided clear explanations and made sure I felt comfortable throughout the entire process. On

the day of the surgery, everything went smoothly, and Dr. Luca Milone skillfully repaired four hernias—one in my navel and three in my groin.

The post-operative care was just as remarkable. My wife accompanied me and she was impressed by the kindness and helpfulness of the staff.

Now, six weeks later, I feel like my old self again. I’ve been diligently following Dr. Milone’s recommendations for core exercises and taking extra precautions to prevent any future issues. I can’t thank him enough for his expertise and compassion throughout this journey. He truly is a brilliant and trustworthy surgeon.
