The AUGUST Editorial HOME FROM THE WAR

Inscribed on a tablet on the town’s Clock Tower are the names of 16 volunteers from Herne Bay and district who served in the Boer War of South Africa in 1899-1902. All were members of the Royal East Kent Mounted Rifles. Among them was Henry John Pout (1873-1953). Harry, as he was known, was a brother of my grandfather Edward Pout Jnr (1874-1950). Both at the time were living with their parents, three other brothers and four sisters at Kite Farm, Swalecliffe. My grandfather, who also belonged to the regiment, volunteered his services but his father (my greatgrandfather Edward Pout Snr who managed 21 farms comprising 2,000 acres around Herne Bay, Whitstable and Canterbury) decided that “he couldn’t be spared as he was needed on the farms”.

Local and county newspapers can prove a useful source for those researching their family history. A detailed account of Harry Pout’s reception on his return home from military duty appears in The Whitstable Times & Herne Bay Herald of October 5th 1901, when “a very pleasant gathering took place in the barn at Kite Farm”. The event coincided with the annual harvest supper given by my great-grandfather for all his farmworkers. Over 70 people, family members, friends, labourers, gamekeepers and coastguards attended the celebrations.

Following “a splendid meal” Harry Pout was presented with a silver cigarette case, subscribed by parishioners, and a silver sovereign case by his father’s Harry Pout 1901 employees.

In his regimental uniform The Royal Herne Bay Minstrels had been engaged to provide the entertainment and, according to the newspaper report, “for about two hours kept the company in roars of laughter with their songs and recitations”. They rounded off the performance by singing “When Tommy comes marching home again”. The evening closed with everyone joining in the National Anthem. Michael & Roger Pout, both of Herne Bay, are grandsons of Harry Pout.

Footnote: Originally known as the Royal East Kent Yeomanry, this regiment came about after France’s declaration of war on England in 1793, George III organising an immediate increase in land forces in case of attack. In the event, no invasion took place. Although many units existed during the 19th century none was called up for duty until the Boer War, when all 38 regiments volunteered for service in South Africa.
