'For about a year it had become uncomfortable to lie or sleep on my right side, and as a result I had started sleeping on my back. In January 2014 I developed severe and debilitating back pain radiating down my right leg to my ankle. This was so severe that I was unable to walk without the aid of sticks and for about two weeks spent most of the time in bed. I found it extremely difficult to do simple tasks or wash and dress and it would take me 20 minutes to get to our en suite bathroom from bed and back again. With great difficulty I attended the doctor's surgery and was prescribed analgesics, and a subsequent X-ray showed a grade 1 spondylolisthesis of L4 on L5 of my lower spine. I was recommended by a friend to see Wayne Roberts, and following treatment from him, the improvement in my condition was dramatic. Over a period of some weeks he gave me a series of exercises and I commenced a course using his 'pilates' equipment, which helped to strengthen my core muscles. I was able to stop all analgesics and the pain resolved completely. My mobility and flexibility improved to the extent that I am able to do things which I have not been able to do for several years. In addition the pain in my right thigh resolved altogether and I am now able to sleep comfortably in any position I choose. I cannot thank Wayne enough for the help he has given me. (JB)'

A History of Herne Bay’s Farms By Roger Turner
A county “rich and flourishing in agriculture” was how the Kentish rural scene was described in the 16th century. In a survey carried out by London lawyer William Lambarde, who toured the English countryside on horseback, he wrote that East Kent had more orchards, mainly of apples and cherries, than anywhere else. Apart from “an abundance of fruit” there were vast acres of meadows and woodland, containing oak and beech trees, and fields of wheat, rye, barley and oats. Perhaps his observations in his book, A Perambulation of Kent, published in 1576, led to the county becoming known as the Garden of England. Some of the farmsteads, which he might just have come across on his travels, still survive in and around Herne Bay. The following is a brief history of them, including those which have been demolished. Studds Farm, Herne Bay-Whitstable Road. Belonging to the Stud family, William Stud was living at the property in 1327. The present building dates to around 1550. Refaced in the 18th century and brick-covered, it is thought to encase a timberframed hall house.

Bullockstone Farm, Herne. Also known as Henfoot(e) Farm and originally as de Haneforde in 1270. The “forde” referred to a brook which still runs through the grounds. A nearby bridge, so small it was known as Tom Thumb’s Bridge, once crossed the brook. Bodkin Farm, Thanet Way, on the Chestfield/Herne Bay border. Referred to in the Domesday Book, the farmhouse was occupied by John Badkyn in 1334 and by Joseph Bodkin in the 15th century.
Greenhill Farm, Greenhill. First mentioned in 1458, Dating from the 16th century, the farmhouse has brick walls, which hide a timber frame, and a hipped roof.

Love Street Farm, Greenhill. This property and its 91 acres were owned by landowner Charles William Prescott-Westcar of Strode Park, Herne. Owned by the Standing family in the 1920s it has long since been demolished. Occupying the site today, in Greenhill Road, is Briary Primary School. Studd Hill Lower Farm. This property, first mentioned in 1474, stood on the cliffs at Herne Bay near the boundary with Swalecliffe. It was lost to coastal erosion and demolished in 1898. Colewood Farm, Thanet Way, Herne Bay. May be a corruption of Colwein’s Wood, as a James Colweinwood appears in a list of jurors of 1284. The current property, now extensively renovated, dates to around 1500. Frog’s Island Farm, Thornden Wood Road, Herne. Built in 1803. In 1819 the property was known as Thompson’s Farm. Tinker’s Thatch, a cottage to the south of the farmhouse, was part of the Frog’s Island estate and occupied by a farm worker. Timberframed, it was built around 1650.
