7. Student Behaviour and Restorative Justice
Brockton holds high standards for students to behave respectfully and safely We follow a restorative justice approach to discipline, focusing on conflict resolution, making amends, building skills, and repairing rather than punishment. If you encounter any discipline problems that you are unsuccessful in addressing through conversation with the student, please contact the TOC coordinator or any staff administrator (e.g., Principal, Department Chair, or IB Coordinator).
Your role is to supervise and support learning, rather than enforcing long-term discipline. Address minor issues promptly, refer major issues to the appropriate personnel, and always leave clear notes for the classroom teacher
General Principles
Stay calm and consistent Students may test boundaries when their regular teacher is away Your calm, fair response sets the tone
Focus on learning and safety As long as students are safe and reasonably on task, avoid unnecessary escalation
Know your role You are expected to manage day-to-day behaviour but not to impose major consequences Significant issues should be referred to the school administration
If you are uncertain how to respond, err on the side of:
· Maintaining safety
· Staying calm and professional
· Passing on the concern to the administration and the regular teacher
Addressing Minor Behaviour Issues
Examples: Talking out of turn, being off task, using phones, and experiencing light disruptions. Steps to follow:
1. Proximity: Move closer to the student or make eye contact.
Page 7 out of 13
2 Reminder: State the expectation calmly (“Phones away, please”)
3 Choice: Offer a redirection (“You can keep talking, or you can use this time to finish your work your choice”)
4 Documentation: Make a brief note of persistent issues to share with the regular teacher
Handling Moderate Behaviour Issues
Examples: Repeated disruption, refusal to follow directions, inappropriate language, disrespect Steps to follow:
1 Direct conversation: Speak quietly to the student Restate expectations
2 Change of seat/environment: Move the student if necessary
3. Clear consequence: Explain that the behaviour will be reported.
4. Call for support if needed: If disruption prevents teaching or learning, contact the office (or follow the school’s support protocol).
Managing Serious Behaviour or Safety Concerns
Examples: Aggression, threats, fighting, harassment, vandalism, unsafe actions
Steps to follow:
1 Ensure safety first Do not physically intervene unless safety is at risk and you are trained
2. Call for immediate support. Contact the office or nearest administrator.
3. Remove class if necessary. If safety is at risk, evacuate students calmly.
4. Document thoroughly. Report the incident in writing before you leave for the day.

It is a good practice to check with the TOC Coordinator and/or the educational supervisor to confirm whether any drills are planned, and the procedure in case a real emergency occurs
Here is a condensed set of our Emergency Procedures Please review it in advance or your work on campus.
