Theodore “Theo” Decker was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and even love. Through it all, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day... a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch. BAFTA-winner John Crowley directs an all-star cast for this touching adaptation of Donna Tartt’s best-selling novel.

Freddy is 30 and yearns to start a family but for him this ordinary desire comes with unique challenges. He is a gay transgender man. Deciding to carry his own baby took years of soul searching, but nothing could prepare him for the reality of pregnancy, as both a physical experience and one that challenges society’s fundamental understanding of gender, parenthood and family. One trans man’s pioneering quest to fulfil an age-old desire: this is the story of the dad who gave birth. Director Jeanie Finlay will join us for a post-screening Q&A on MON 9.
A beautiful love story between Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian muse Marianne Ihlen. Their love began on the Greek island of Hydra in 1960 as part of a bohemian community of foreign artists, writers and musicians. The film follows their relationship from Hydra, a humble time of ‘free love’ and open marriage, to how their love evolved when Leonard became a successful musician.
Dir: Christian Petzold Germany 2018 102m Starring: Franz Rogowski, Paula Beer
It’s 1942 in occupied France. Jewish refugee Georg is unexpectedly awarded a transit visa when he is mistaken for a famous author. Realising the man has recently died, he assumes his identity and flees to the port of Marseille – only to find the visa wasn’t the only thing the writer had left behind.
Starring: Tom Schilling, Sebastian Koch
Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s epic film takes place over three decades in Germany, from the 1930s to the 1960s. Set against the backdrop of a changing country, Never Look Away’s story is art and love rather than politics. At its heart is Kurt Barnert, a fictionalised version of artist Gerhard Richter, who is forced to flee East Germany, eventually finding his voice as a talented and provocative artist. An ambitious, sprawling and beautifully made film. Edinburgh International Film Festival
BAIT (15) Dir: Mark Jenkin UK 2019 89m Starring: Ed Rowe, Mary Woodvine
Martin Ward is a cove fisherman, without a boat. His brother has re-purposed their father’s vessel as a tourist tripper, driving a wedge between them. With their childhood home now a get-away for London money, Martin is displaced to the estate above the picturesque harbour. As the summer season settles in, tensions reach new levels with tragic consequences. Shot in black and white 16mm, Bait is a poignant slice of realism, balancing modern ideas and tradition.

In 1980s Leningrad, newcomer Viktor hopes to break onto the underground rock scene. Local rock star Mayk takes him under his wing, but as the two grow closer – chain-smoking over banned records from Bowie and Lou Reed – tensions also arise as they clash over politics, influences and the love of Mayk’s wife. Based on the true story of Viktor Tsoi, Leto is a nostalgic tribute to a time when all that mattered was the music and those who made it.
In his second directorial outing, Louis Garrel stars as Abel whose girlfriend of three years, Marianne, informs him that she is pregnant, with his best friend’s child, and that they are to be married. So begins a tale that will stretch over years, filled with twists, turns, joys and heartbreaks – not the least, Marianne’s return into his life alongside Eva, the impetuous younger sister of the man he was abandoned for. A beguiling bedroom farce reminiscent of the French New Wave.
After learning their beloved matriarch has terminal lung cancer, a family opts not to tell her about the diagnosis, instead scheduling an impromptu wedding-reunion back in China. Headstrong and emotional writer Billi rebels against her parents’ directive to stay in New York and joins the family as they awkwardly attempt to rekindle old bonds, throw together a wedding that only Grandma is actually looking forward to, and surreptitiously say their goodbyes. Sundance Film Festival
For Sama traces the journey of a young woman, Waad al-Kateab, through love, marriage and motherhood across five years of the revolution in Aleppo, Syria. An intimate, visceral documentary about the female experience of war, Waad faces an impossible decision: should she flee the city to protect her young daughter’s life? But to leave means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much.
A powerful biographical thriller, Hotel Mumbai is a vivid depiction of the devastating 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Inspired by the 2009 documentary Surviving Mumbai, and starring Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Nazanin Boniadi and Anupam Kher, this white-knuckle retelling recounts how guests and staff at the city’s opulent Taj Mahal Palace Hotel fought to survive during those four terrifying days.
