With their partners away serving in Afghanistan, a group of women on the home front form a choir and quickly find themselves at the centre of a media sensation and global movement, in this feel-good story. Inspired by the international phenomenon of military wives choirs, Peter Cattaneo (The Full Monty) crafts an emotive and poignant story about a group of women who realise that their partners aren’t the only ones whose circumstances can lead to unbreakable bonds of camaraderie, belonging, and deep friendship. TIFF

At a time when the Miss World competition was the most-watched TV show on the planet, the 1970 edition was one to go down in history, thanks to the newly formed Women’s Liberation Movement. Meanwhile, western ideals of beauty were being shaken up by new entrants like Miss Grenada and Miss South Africa. Philippa Lowthorpe directs a stellar cast in this politically relevant and inspirational true story, which celebrates all women, however they choose to navigate a male-dominated world. BFI

Fabienne is an ageing movie star who, despite her momentary lapses in memory, remains a venerable force to be reckoned with. Upon the publication of her memoirs, her daughter Lumir returns to Paris with her husband and their young daughter. A sharp and funny battle of wits ensues between mother and daughter, as Lumir takes issue with Fabienne’s rose-coloured version of the past. Charming, bold, and imbued with endless emotional insight, The Truth offers a relatable look at human relationships from Japanese master Hirokazu Koreeda, and featuring exquisite performances from its all-star cast.

Starring: Nora Al Awadh, Dae Al Hilali

Nine-year-old Benni is expelled from one foster home to another due to her aggressive and unpredictable nature. All she truly wants is to be able to live back home with her siblings but her mother is herself too unstable and overwhelmed to care for her. When an anger management trainer enters Benni’s life, things begin to change but will it be enough to undo all the damage done by a system that’s continuously failed her?

“It has the playful lightness of touch, the wit and warmth that are an essential part of the Koreeda signature; it’s also an affectionate ode to French cinema itself...” The Hollywood Reporter

CUNNINGHAM 3D (U)

“Gosh darn it, it’s hard not to warm to a film that features an a cappella version of Yazoo’s “Only You”... and Kristin Scott Thomas having a verbal cat fight in a parking lot.” The Hollywood Reporter

A gloriously fictionalised tale of a true-life renegade.

IN THE LOUNGE

In a near-future Brazil, things aren’t going well for the inhabitants of the very diverse Bacurau – basic amenities are in short supply, they’ve just lost their matriarch, and the truck that brings clean water has arrived riddled with bullet holes. Soon, the villagers realise that not only has Bacurau been literally erased from the map, its citizens have also been sold as prey for bloodthirsty foreign hunters. As the threat gets closer, the villagers prepare for a violent confrontation in this wild and politically-charged hybrid that’s part Spaghetti western, part sci-fi and not for the faint-hearted.

“It is an utterly distinctive film-making, executed with ruthless clarity and force.” The Guardian TUE 10, 8PM PREVIEW + INTRODUCTION Mayhem Festival’s Steven Sheil and Chris Cooke will introduce this special preview screening.

Frustrated with the limits placed upon her because of her gender, a small-town Saudi doctor takes matters into her own hands and runs for local council, in this family drama from the director of Wadjda and Mary Shelley. After her debut feature Wadjda broke new ground as the first-ever film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia - and the first made by a Saudi woman - Al-Mansour returns to the kingdom with this tale of one woman’s quest to challenge not only the system but also herself.
