In his first film since the Oscar-winning Sideways, writer-director Alexander Payne again proves himself a master of the kind of smart, sharp and surprisingly tender comedy that was once the signature of Billy Wilder and Jean Renoir. He follows Matt King, the heir of a prominent Hawaiian landowning family whose life is thrown for a loop when his wife is critically injured in a boating accident. Rooted in Clooney’s beautifully understated performance, Payne’s film is an uncommonly perceptive portrait of marriage, family and community, suffused with humour and tragedy, and wrapped in a warm human glow.

Summoning up the sinister from beneath the veneer of normalcy has always been Roman Polanski’s specialty, so it’s no surprise that the great director does such a smashing job of putting Yasmina Reza’s awardwinning play ‘God of Carnage’ on the screen. With the expert cast of Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly, Reza’s explosively comic X-ray of the anger and venality lying just under the surface of the outwardly civilized behaviour of two New York City couples has been fully realized. NYFF 2011

Set in the high-stakes world of the financial industry, Margin Call is a thriller entangling the key players at an investment firm during one perilous 24hour period in the 2008 financial crisis. When an analyst unlocks information that could prove to be the downfall of the firm, a roller-coaster ride ensues as decisions both financial and moral catapult the lives of all involved to the brink of disaster. Set in Vienna on the eve of the First World War, the film explores the complex relationship between novice psychiatrist Carl Jung and his mentor Sigmund Freud. Studying under the already well-established Freud, Jung practices his teacher’s methods while developing his own theories based on the clinical study of psychologically disturbed patients. When a sick young Russian woman arrives at the clinic, both Jung and Freud are fascinated by her case and spellbound by her vulnerable yet dangerous sexuality. Sharp-witted dialogue and a pristine turn-of-the-century-Vienna setting add a refined tone to a film that explores the anything-but-civilized depths of human desire. TIFF

Paris, 1910: having unintentionally unleashed a mysterious monster from an eccentric scientist’s greenhouse, Emile the projectionist, Raoul the inventor and Lucille, an enchanting cabaret singer embark on this laughout-loud 3D adventure. Brilliantly crafted animation, action, comedy, romance and catchy musical numbers make A Monster in Paris an unforgettable family favourite.

Based on an incredible true story, and the novella by Louis de Bernières. Kriv Stenders brings Australian cinema back to life with his new movie based on the old Australian story of the Red Dog who united a disparate local community while roaming the Australian outback in search of his long lost master. Red Dog is one of the finest heart warmers in years, it will make you laugh and it will, definitely, make you cry. A truly perfect film for all the family.

Elizabeth Olsen plays Martha, a young woman who reunites with older sister Lucy after she mysteriously escapes from a commune. Lucy’s materialistic husband and their nouveau riche estate prove suffocating and oppressive but Martha (whose identity slips between each of the titular names) stays, terrified that the enigmatic leader of the collective will track her down. Rippling with a permanent sense of threat Durkin’s filmmaking and Jody Lee Lipes’ exquisite cinematography are perfectly attuned to both beauty within the frame and the power of what to leave outside it. DREAMS OF A LIFE (12A)

HOUSE OF TOLERANCE (18)

Great Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith reunite for this comedy-drama based on Deborah Moggach’s novel about a group of pensioners who head for India with dreams of a life of luxury and wind up at the titular hotel. With the emphasis more on ‘faded’ than ‘grandeur’, they find themselves at the mercy of the entrepreneurial Sonny, who attempts to convince them they are in fact in a retirement paradise, a veritable home from home. Tom Wilkinson, Billy Nighy, Penelope Wilton and Celia Imrie also star in John Madden’s seasoned-Brits-abroad romp.

Set in a Paris brothel, a “house of tolerance”, at the end of the Belle Époque in 1900. Fine gentlemen and dandies lounge in the drawing room in the girls’ bored embrace, before choosing one to go upstairs with. In this closed world, where some men fall in love and others become unaccountably vicious, the girls share their secrets, their fears, their joys and their pains. “Bertrand Bonello’s highly stylized look at the final days of a fin-desiècle brothel in Paris conjures up the languid beauty and frank sexuality of French Romantic painting.” Noah Cowan, Toronto International Film Festival

Young solicitor Arthur Kipps is summoned to Crythin Gifford, a remote spot on the east coast to attend to the estate of Mrs Alice Drablow, who had lived alone for many years in the foreboding Eel Marsh House. Whilst sorting through Mrs Drablow’s papers, Kipps endures an increasingly terrifying series of supernatural experiences, with the appearance of a malevolent presence, ‘the woman in black’ leading him to discover a dark and tragic secret. This adaptation of Susan Hill’s hugely popular ghost story is a pleasurably unsettling tale.
