As a young woman growing up in the Paris suburb of Créteil, Neïla Salah dreamed of becoming a lawyer. Enrolled at the renowned Assas Law School in Paris, on her first day she runs up against Pierre Mazard, a professor known for his provocative behaviour and misconduct. To redeem himself, he agrees to prep Neïla for a prestigious public speaking contest. Cynical and demanding, Pierre might become the mentor she needs... But to do that, both of them will have to rise above their prejudices. Advised certificate: 15

The Mayor of Lyon, Paul Theraneau remains completely devoted to serving his city and his country but his knack for generating new ideas has evaporated. Enter low-key 30-year-old academic Alice Heimann who is hired for a nebulous job conjuring ideas at City Hall. Their interactions are our gateway into a lively, funny and touching exploration of the way we live now through the filter of two generations. Talky in the best possible way, this is a classy but accessible piece of entertainment which is also food for thought. Advised certificate: 15

Two decades after its filming, Olivier Meyrou’s controversial yet exquisitely drawn portrait of France’s last great fashion designer, Yves Saint Laurent, has finally seen the light of day, having previously been withheld from release by Saint Laurent’s business partner, Pierre Bergé. Meyrou goes behind-the-scenes to present both Yves the Legend and Yves the Man, as he prepares his final collection before the fashion house was sold to Gucci in 1999. Icons of the glamour industry show their unerring dedication to the fashion house and its namesake.

Lovers Marianne and Jean-Paul spend their vacation in a villa near St Tropez. The main feature of the villa is a swimming pool, around which revolves most of the action. After a visit, Marianne invites former lover Harry and his teenage daughter Penelope to stay. Tension between the grown-ups rises especially when Jean-Paul seduces Penelope. The consequences are deadly in a game of sexual jealousy and possessiveness. Newly restored.

As a juror at Jacques Viguier’s trial, Nora is convinced that he did not kill his wife. This intuition quickly becomes an obsession. She persuades the most famous lawyer in the country to defend him. Together they start a compulsive quest to prove his innocence against all odds. That quest has a price they might not be ready to pay. Raimbault has crafted a nail-biter of a courthouse thriller whose story is based on the real murder trial of Jacques Viguier. Advised certificate: 15

TEENAGE FLICKS (90m)

12 NEW COURSE

From 1950s Beach Movies to more serious outpourings such as Rebel without a Cause, the teen or troubled adolescent has long since played a key role in modern cinematic offerings. Whether within the context of coming of age productions like The Breakfast Club or Stand by Me or presented within the confines of other genres like comedy, thriller or horror, young adults and their narratives have proved to be controversial and highly popular box office fodder. With plenty of film clips and discussion, including studies of movies like Heathers, Super Dark Times, Ghost World, Ladybird, Juno and Virgin Suicides, everyone will relate to this honest examination of that joyously painful, pimple-faced period in our lives where you can be earnest, awkward, beautiful and ridiculous all at the same time. “When you grow up your heart dies” Tutor: Andrew Graves 10 weeks Tuesday evenings commencing TUE 14 JAN, 7PM-8.30PM Price: £70/£50 memb & conc/ £35 under 25
