Tony Benn, the longest serving Labour MP in history, is also, arguably, the most popular UK politician of all time. Across the globe his brand of socialism has struck a chord with people of all ages and social backgrounds. This new film reveals the human face behind the political mask and offers an exclusive and deeply personal look at the life of a national treasure.

Starring: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence

Dir: Nick Fenton & Peter Strickland

Starring: Dakota Fanning, Emma Thompson

Starring: Antonia Thomas, Steve Coogan

A film about the relationship between Effie Gray and the Victorian art critic John Ruskin. It follows the scandal that followed his failure to consummate their marriage and the triangle between Ruskin, Effie Gray and Ruskin’s protégé, artist John Everett Millais. Effie Gray is a deftly crafted period drama that flourishes in the hands of its screenwriter and co-star, Emma Thompson, her unique wit and intelligence shining through even when she’s not on screen.

An uplifting tale of two young boys whose horizons are opened up by the discovery of black American soul music. No longer satisfied with the prospect of a small town life, they dream of going to America to discover super-rare records which will help them to become the No.1 DJs on the Northern Soul scene.

Based on Ron Rash’s North Carolina-set novel about logging magnate George Pemberton and his ruthless, brilliant wife Serena. The ‘perfect’ couple’s master plans come unstuck when they discover she can’t bear children and that George previously fathered a child out of wedlock. With a strong supporting cast of Brits (Toby Jones, Sean Harris and a villainous Rhys Ifans), this is an enjoyably traditional, extravagant melodrama of bitter jealousy, murder and cold, unforgiving ambition. Lawrence in particular is a treat, playing Serena with an evil eye Bette Davis might have envied.

David Fincher’s adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s best seller is an intensely compressed portrait of a recession-era marriage contained within a devastating depiction of celebrity/media culture. When Nick Dunne’s wife Amy goes missing on the day of their fifth anniversary, Nick becomes a prime suspect in her disappearance. With a fantastic cast including Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike and Neil Patrick Harris, Fincher depicts a uniquely disturbing exploration of the fault lines in a marriage.

SUN 5, 4.45PM LIVE BY SATELLITE PANEL There will be a 5 minute introduction at 4:45pm, followed by the film and a 45min panel afterwards. The panel will include John Sergeant and Owen Jones and other political commentators.

TIME IS ILLMATIC (CERT TBC) Dir: One9 United States 2014 74m

Multimedia artist One9’s documentary follows the trajectory of Nas’s 1994 landmark debut album, Illmatic, one of the most important albums in hip hop. Tracing Nas’s influences from the music of his jazz musician father, to the burgeoning hip-hop scene in his native NYC, Time is Illmatic describes the huge obstacles he faced, providing an authentic account of Nas’s journey from a young street poet to a visionary MC.

United Kingdom 2014 97m

Björk’s eighth studio album, Biophilia, was conceived as a multimedia project that explores the creative nexus between music, nature and technology. Biophilia Live is a film of the extraordinary closing performance of the project, at London’s Alexandra Palace. Not just a concert film but a record of Björk’s groundbreaking project, which reached its climax with a ravishing show.

FRI 24 MUSIC IN THE BAR Our good neighbour Mimm joins us in presenting the opening night of Time Is Illmatic. The full album will be played in the cafebar before the 9PM screening and then Mimm will DJ afterwards.

BOOK OF LIFE (U)

London Film Festival

Dir: Jorge R. Gutierrez United States 2014

2014 99m

Starring: Jean Gabin, Arletty

Starring: Jack O’Connell, Sean Harris

Holed up in a claustrophobic flat, over the course of a long night, Francois reflects on the circumstances that have led him there. Marcel Carné once again collaborated with screenwriter Jacques Prévert to create this exquisitely crafted noir describing an obsessive relationship that leads to murder, and a classic of French poetic realism. This reissue includes new, previously censored scenes.

New recruit Private Gary Hook (Nottingham TV Workshop alumnae Jack O’Connell) is unexpectedly deployed to Belfast during The Troubles in 1971. Shortly after arriving, a routine house search operation escalates into a terrifying street riot, and during the chaos Hook is accidentally left behind. Unable to tell friend from foe, he must survive the night alone and find his way to safety through a disorientating, alien and deadly landscape. Director Yann Demange exposes the futility of war in which every act of violence only breeds more violence.

Before Monet and Renoir, Pissarro and Sisley - in other words, before the French Impressionists - there was Turner, one of the greatest of all English painters. J.M.W. Turner was in love with light and what it could do to buildings and cities, to the sea and ships, to the mountains and countryside. Mike Leigh explores the last quarter century of the great if eccentric British painter - a film deeply respectful of its subject whilst probing the darker recesses of the man’s personality. TIFF
