Good afternoon everyone, and welcome to Wall Park. A particular welcome of course to our friends who have made the trek from south London, a safe journey home to you all.
We also welcome today the guests of our match sponsors Blueview Renovations and ball sponsors Corner 2 Corner, and hope you enjoy the experience. As ever, we are very grateful for the assistance given by these and all the other businesses and individuals who help us out. Our visitors have had a new experience today, this being the first time they have travelled further west than Portsmouth in either national cup competition. Currently near the top of their league, they will probably start as the bookies favourites to progress, but then so were Shaftesbury in the last round. Football can be a funny old game as someone once said, and provided we play to our potential throughout and get the rub of the green we have every chance. Today’s winners - no extra time remember, penalties after 90 minutes if necessarywill tread more new paths next time out, neither club having reached the Fifth Round previously. The draw will be released on Monday around lunchtime and being the last 16 nationally, may provide today’s victors with a very long journey.
Last Saturday’s match proved far less challenging than might have been expected. Although Marjon displayed one or two nice touches early doors, they were simply blown away by what was probably one of the best first halves we’ve produced this season so far. The introduction of a benchful of subs at half-time altered the rhythm for a short period but not the one-way traffic. I was tempted to put ten bob on a third consecutive 6-0 victory today, but the bookie takes his holidays in Bermuda while I have to make do with Bognor…
Next Saturday the first XI are away at Axminster (2.15pm) in the quest for more vital league points. The following Saturday, 28th, we entertain table-topping Okehampton Argyle in the last of the early kick-offs. It hardly needs saying that both matches are crucial in our endeavours for promotion and that all support, as ever, will be most welcome. Meanwhile, the reserves are at Buckfastleigh today and entertain Kingsteignton next Saturday, so two difficult matches for them, too!
A warm welcome to everyone associated with Raynes Park this afternoon. Hopefully the travel to Brixham went without difficulty. Sadly I don’t think you’ll quite see the town in all it’s glory given the current weather conditions! We can assure you that coming back in June or July will certainly give you a different feel for the place!
Our visitors are certainly the form side, winning nine from their last ten and remaining unbeaten during that run. They were certainly the side we picked out as one we’d have preferred to avoided. But that’s the beauty of a cup competition!
We have been enthused by our recent games. Both six-nil victories against near neighbours Dartmouth on Boxing Day and then versus the students of Marjons last Saturday.
I think it’s fair to say that the pitch stood up well last week, albeit it has clearly taken a fair amount of water and cut up pretty badly. Let’s hope today’s conditions allow for a game that reflects the last 32 of such a prestigious competition where both sets of players compete at their maximum with respect for all on view.
Enjoy the game, and for our visitors a safe journey home regardless of the result.
Raynes Park Vale are a semi-professional club based in the London Borough of Merton, affiliated to the Surrey FA and a FA Charter Standard club. They were formed in 1995 following the merger of Raynes Park and Malden Vale. The history of the club goes back to 1925 when the Southern Railway football team was formed, playing their home games in Raynes Park not far from the current club’s ground. The team fell victim to the Beeching cuts, and were reformed in 1964 as Raynes Park FC, playing in the Surrey Senior League.
Malden Vale FC was formed in 1967, gaining senior status in 1977 when they too joined the Surrey Senior League. They also competed in the Spartan League and the previous incarnation of the Combined Counties League before winning promotion to the Isthmian League in 1989. In 1994 the club’s joint managers and many of the players left to join Hendon. Incidentally, both Jody Morris and Clinton Morrison were products of the Malden Vale youth system. The new merged club joined the Combined Counties League and currently play in the Premier Division South at Step 5, finishing third last season, their highest placing to date.
Since the start of last season they have been managed by Josh Gallagher, one of four footballing brothers. The youngest, Conor, plays for Chelsea and is an England international: Jake is at Maidstone United and Dan plays for Dorking Wanderers.

Until 1974, football players were either professionals or amateurs. Professionals were paid to play by their clubs, and the only cup competitions such clubs could enter were the FA Cup and, after 1969, for clubs outside the Football League, the FA Trophy. Amateurs, on the other hand, were not paid by their clubs (at least not officially!) and such clubs had their own competition, the FA Amateur Cup.
In 1974, with many of the top amateur players receiving payment for playing, the Football Association abolished the distinction, scrapped the FA Amateur Cup and introduced the FA Vase for the majority of the clubs who had previously played in the competition. Well over 200 clubs entered in the first season, 1974-75, when Hoddesdon Town of the Spartan League beat Epsom & Ewell of the Surrey Senior League 2-1 in the final at Wembley before a crowd of 9,000.
In September 2001 Hinckley AFC set a new record score in the competition, beating St Martins 18-0.
In recent years entry into the FA Vase has been restricted to clubs in the ninth and lower tiers of the English league system (those in the four levels above the ninth enter the FA Trophy). It was reorganisation of the National League system in 2004 that moved the dividing line down to the new Step 5 (ninth tier overall)
Clubs from the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man also entered the Vase in the past. Guernsey FC, who were formed in 2011 and play in the Isthmian League entered in the 2012-13 season and reached the semi-finals.
It used to be the case that League success meant exemption from the qualifying rounds of the FA Vase for the following season, but the exemption system has now been altered. Clubs that reached the Third Round of the previous season’s Vase are now excused until the First Round Proper, unless they have won promotion to Step 4 and thus play in the FA Trophy instead.
Clubs that reached the Fourth Round of the previous season’s Vase and have not been promoted are exempt until the Second Round Proper.
Only five teams have won the FA Vase more than once. Whitley Bay are the only team to win the Vase three times in successive seasons, while Billericay Town, Tiverton Town and Halesowen Town have won back-to-back titles.
In 2017 Forest Green Rovers became the first FA Vase winners to go on to play in the Football League, while Glossop North End and Hereford, both former Football League teams, have been beaten finalists. AFC Sudbury have reached the final four times, losing every time. Last season 618 clubs entered, the final being won by Newport Pagnell Town of the United Counties League, who beat Littlehampton Town of the Southern Combination 3-0. The club eventually winning the competition will benefit from the prize fund to the tune of more than £40,000 in total.
This season the competition has new title sponsors, Isuzu UK having taken over from builders’ merchants Buildbase, and the trophy is now known as the Isuzu FA Vase.
“I cannot recommend Blueview Renovations enough. Rhys and Dave are ultimate professionals. In five months they took a very dated 2,500 sq ft 1960’s house and worked a miracle. As we are remote owners we relied on them to project manage for us as well. They promised us it would be completed by the agreed deadline and even though that meant they and some of the trades they brought in working all weekends and really late nights, and a few early mornings, they did it.
At no time were they off doing other jobs, they dedicated themselves to this job and no other; I’ve never known that!
If you are looking for a large project (or a smaller job) then genuinely I cannot rate them highly enough - our house was valued on completion of the work 50% higher than at the start and that is testament to the quality of their work.
If that was not enough they took a complete disaster zone of an area of the garden and transformed it into a wonderful firepit garden area with a large hand-built bespoke firepit.”

The FA Cup 6th Round Tie in 1974 between Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest was eagerly awaited; fifty-four thousand packed into St James’s Park to watch the top flight Magpies take on second division Forest. On paper Forest had little chance but only a few seasons earlier Hereford United had dumped the Geordies out of the cup and they had been taken to a replay by fourth division Scunthorpe and non-league Hendon in previous rounds.
Forest went into the break leading 2-1 courtesy of goals from Ian Bowyer and Liam O’Kane. The second half started in the same vein and the Magpies looked to be going out. In the 55th minute David Craig fouled Duncan McKenzie and the referee gave a penalty. Newcastle’s Pat Howard argued the decision and was dismissed, George Lyall scored the spot kick to increase the visitors’ lead. Police estimate that at this point somewhere between three and five hundred spectators invaded the pitch; two visiting players were assaulted and referee Gordon Kew took both sets of players off the pitch for safety reasons. It took the police eight minutes to clear the pitch; twenty three people were taken to hospital with another one hundred and three treated in the stadium; there were also thirtynine arrests.
When the game restarted the atmosphere was hostile and extremely intimidating, Newcastle scored three times in the last twenty minutes and a neutral spectator was reported to say that he thought Moncur’s goal was offside, but that the linesman didn’t dare raise his flag. The game ended 4-3 in favour of United who were drawn against Burnley in the semi-final. The FA then concluded that the victory was concluded in a hostile environment and ordered a replay at a neutral venue which did not impress Newcastle; Malcolm MacDonald commented ‘I half-expected a ridiculous solution, and they came up with one’.
On 18th March the two teams drew 0-0 at Goodison Park and three days later at the same venue a single Malcolm MacDonald goal settled the tie. The Magpies reached the final losing to Liverpool.
A noisy crowd can be described as the 12th man but it’s not often that a pitch invasion is worth three goals.
