‘ BRIXHAM BILLY’Good evening everyone, and welcome to Wall Park. A particular welcome of course to our friends who have made the journey from Plymouth, a safe journey home to you all.
Villa made an indifferent start to their league season, winning only two of their first fourteen matches, although they did have some cup success, winning at Dobwalls, Holsworthy and Ivybridge in the Vase and the League Cup and reaching the quarter-finals of the latter before losing on penalties to Okehampton. Recent league results have been more encouraging, with only two defeats in their last seven games and with games in hand on the teams above them they may well be in something of a false position. No doubt they will be keen to improve on their recent results here, and we will have to be at our best to stop them from doing so.
Interesting news from the Football Association regarding non-league end-of-season playoff matches. Their cunning plan is that this will be the last year of inter-step playoffs. At the end of next season, i.e. in May 2024, each of the eight Step 4 divisions (Southern League South etc) will relegate two clubs, and each of the sixteen Step 5 divisions, including the Western League Premier, will promote two clubs, thereby increasing all Step 4 divisions to 22 teams. There will be just one club relegated from each Step 5 division, so two up and one down from the Western for next season.
From the following season, i.e. from May 2025, the Step 4 divisions will each relegate four clubs, and the Step 5 divisions will return to relegating the bottom two, so two up and two down for the Western - potential re-organisation notwithstanding, of course! Pretty much anything could happen on that front between now and then
This coming Saturday we have a crunch match at Crediton (3pm), all support welcome of course; the reserves meanwhile entertain East Allington in the divisional cup (2.30pm).
Enjoy the match, and let’s hope for a win for the Fishermen!
P.S. Just a note on Saturday’s game against Torridgeside. The hat-trick which earnt Kieran his Man of the Match award was his first ever in senior football.

It was certainly nice to not just be able to have a game, but to have a game at home last Saturday! And what a game it ended up being for the lads again.
Torridgeside were on a decent little run so we cautiously respected their form, but after the first 20 minutes in which we absolutely dominated we finally broke the deadlock with two very good and well worked goals. The pattern continued throughout the second half and the lads put in a very commanding performance.
As we keep saying, one game at a time and this evening’s match against a very well drilled and organised Elburton absolutely fits that bill once more. For those that watched our previous encounter earlier this season, you’ll be well aware of what a big challenge tonight’s game will prove.
It will be nice to get under the Wall Park lights and enjoy another home game, but we’ll have to be resolute and at our best again to grab another three points.
Performances will quite rightly dip on occasions during the run-in, and a bit of luck and a few decisions here and there will certainly be needed if we are to achieve the aim come May 1st.
We’ll keep banging that drum and drilling the ‘one game at a time’ mantra into the lads.
Don’t underestimate how much we’ll need your continued support though. The lads and us absolutely thrive off the buzz at the moment.
Let’s hope for another buzzing night with another three points!

The club was established in 1982 as a successor to Elburton Red Triangle FC. They joined the Plymouth & District League and went on to win the Division One title in 1991. In 1992 the club were founder members of the Devon County League. The 1994–95 season saw the club win the league's Throgmorton Cup, beating Weston Mill Oak Villa in the final.
In 2007 the Devon County League merged with the South Western League to form the South West Peninsula League, with Elburton becoming members of the Premier Division. The club were relegated to Division One West after finishing bottom of the Premier Division in 2016. They were Division One West runners-up the following season. In 2018 the club finished third in Division One West and were promoted to the Premier Division in place of Stoke Gabriel, who had requested to be relegated. Following league reorganisation at the end of the 2018
19 season, they were placed in the Premier Division East.

Our brand new competition is about to go live!!
Here’s how it works.
The competition is limited to just 59 people, and there’s a prize every month. Hence, your chance of winning one of the twelve prizes each year is fractionally better than one in five.
Every month, the winning number - only 59 of them to choose from, rememberwill win a prize of £200.
And the December draw prize will be a whopping £1,000!
The winning number each month will be the bonus ball drawn in the National Lottery on the last Saturday of the month.
The cost to enter per number is just £10 a month, which over the year works out to just over a couple of quid a week. There are only the 59 numbers available so you’ll have to be quick!
Get a form from the bar, fill it in, give it back and you’re in! Simples. And good luck!!
(In the unlikely event that the winning number remains unsold for that month, half the prize will be rolled over to the following month, the other half will be given to the nearest number that has been sold)

It’s a scientific footballing fact that penalty shoot-outs are only enjoyable to watch when you have no skin in the game. Other teams? Bring it on. My team? No, thank you.
I’ve got a long-running agreement with an old school friend to alert one another to televised penalty shoot-outs.
A couple of weeks back, of the eight quarter-final ties in the FA Trophy and FA Vase, six went to penalties.
In the Trophy, Barnet triumphed at Maidstone United 4-3. Gateshead squeezed past National League North Farsley Celtic 4-2 on penalty kicks.
The FA Vase provided a full house, with all four ties going the distance.
Holders Newport Pagnell Town continued their defence of the competition - no mean feat in itselfwith a 4-3 penalties win. Funnily enough, Albie Hall scored his two penalties in the 90 minutes but missed in the shoot-out when he had the chance to win it. I’m sure he won’t mind, following their progression.
After getting a leveller late on, Ascot United saw off West Didsbury & Chorlton 4-3 in the shoot-out to considerably brighten up their long journey home.
Congleton Town beat Bury AFC 5-4, while Corsham completed the set with a 3-2 win at Peacehaven & Telscombe, who had forced penalties with a 90th-minute leveller.
That’s the thing with the competitions these days, no extra-time, it’s straight into the penalty pressure cooker.
Views will always vary on whether extra-time should still stand, especially at this late stage of a cup competition.
The general consensus has been, considering the number of games played across a season - along with the fixture backlog good cup runs can bring - that it’s the right way to go.
It would be interesting to drill down into the stats of how many games have been settled on spot-kicks since extra time was scrapped. And has it led to more upsets?
From an away side’s point of view, with no replays, perhaps going straight to penalties helps level the playing field. An extra 30 minutes away from home is a long time to have to defend, especially if there is a big crowd in.
The semis are played across one leg these days too. Personally I used to quite enjoy the chess match of semis played over two legs. It also brings to memory the time a Poole Town fans’ forum likened Whitley Bay goal machine Paul Chow to a small four-legged horse after their first leg. Of course he duly hit a hat-trick in the second game to book their place at Wembley. Eeyore indeed!
What are your views on the semi-final set-up? How about neutral grounds like in the FA Cup? When there is so much at stake, the luck of the draw can have a big say when it comes to home advantage. Of course, you can always play for penalties!

Next Friday, 31st March, the club darts team is away to the Bell, play to start at 8pm. All support welcome!
The 1982-83 season was not a particularly good one for Derby County. The Rams were toiling at the wrong end of the Second Division table having managed two wins out of their first twenty-two games. They had also had some crowd disturbances especially in January; the games against Leeds United and Chelsea had fallen on consecutive Saturdays and had seen some unsavoury crowd behaviour.
The did turn the season around with a fifteen-game unbeaten run and would go to the last day of the season knowing that a home win over Fulham would ensure safety. It would not be an easy game; Fulham were pushing for promotion. Their manager Malcolm MacDonald had put a young team together that had maintained a top three position for most of the season. They had faltered a little but a win at the Baseball Ground would see them overtake Leicester City and guarantee promotion.
Seventy-five minutes in saw Bobbie Davidson score to put the Rams one – nil ahead; a few spectators ran on to the pitch to celebrate, they were quickly cleared off the pitch but more of the crowd were gathering at the side of the pitch, six deep in some places. It became impossible to see the touchlines and Fulham’s Robert Wilson was kicked by a spectator as he tried to play the ball. The referee Mr Chadwick blew for an offside; Derby fans thought the game was over and flooded on to the pitch to celebrate their win and safety.
Mr Chadwick said there were still seventy-eight seconds left to play on his watch, but the pitch invasion meant both teams had to leave the field of play; as they did so Jeff Hopkins was assaulted and he was too shocked to continue. The teams could not return to play out the remaining time.
Malcolm MacDonald said that Fulham deserved a replay, they were not to blame for the crowd invasion cutting the game short or the latter stages being affected by the crowd encroaching the touchlines. Other people argued that Derby had been on top during the game and Fulham were unlikely to have scored in the remaining seconds.
The Football League ruled that the result should stand, Fulham appealed to the Football Association but were unsuccessful. Derby were ordered to improve ground security which lead to the erection of perimeter fences which were in place for the next six years.
