Good morning everyone, and welcome to Wall Park. A particular welcome of course to our friends who have made the short trip from Dartmouth, a safe journey home to you all.
A word of thanks to today’s sponsors, More Seafood and South Devon Media. Without the help of these and many other businesses and individuals our club would not be where it is. To say that the assistance of our sponsors is very much appreciated would be a vast understatement. Massive thanks to you all, and we hope you and your guests today enjoy the experience.
We were unlucky to lose against Liskeard in our last home game. We played much the better football for most of the match and on a dry day I think that quality would have got us over the line. However, in a game that might have ended 5-5, it’s all about taking your chances. One of these days - maybe not today, but one day - everything’s going to click and we’re going to clobber someone by a richly deserved hatful instead of the odd one or two.
After the disappointment of one cup exit, what a joy to witness our progression into the last 32 of the FA Vase for the first time. I don’t like plastic pitches, I think they give an advantage to the side which is used to playing on them regularly but in this case, for all Shaftesbury’s technical skill on the ball and passing ability, in truth they created not much threat over the 90 minutes. Grant’s save and then his winning spot-kick ensured our passage, but every Fisherman played his part on a memorable day. Remarkably, it was the fifth consecutive Vase tie in which Shaftesbury had been taken to penalties. Our Fourth Round opponents, Raynes Park Vale from the Combined Counties League, will prove a much tougher challenge. Before we get there though, there are League points at stake today, on Saturday at Teignmouth - note the earlier kickoff time of 12 noon - and here again against Plymouth Marjon on Saturday week (2.15pm). Enjoy the match and let’s hope for a win for the Fishermen! P.S. Did you recognise our cover Santa? It’s none other than our President, John Charles. P.P.S. Two Christmas presents for you today - our latest fixture poster and an updated fixture card.
Well the festive season is very much with us and we hope this morning’s derby with many familiar faces from Dartmouth FC proves to be a real Christmas cracker!
Firstly we’d like to welcome all from Dartmouth to this morning’s Boxing Day fixture. An extended welcome to Robbie, Steve and Ryan who obviously played such important roles for us over recent years.
Having had the euphoria of the Vase penalties win over Shaftesbury a few weeks ago we were brought slightly back down to earth with a bump conceding four and only managing a draw away at Sidmouth. Time will tell whether that ends up being a point gained having been two down at half-time or two points dropped having been leading going into stoppage time. Nevertheless the lads showed grit and determination to claw their way back into the game and a very much similar attitude to the one on display in the second half of that Sidmouth game will be needed throughout today to get anything from our neighbours. Boxing Day games can often be high-scoring, heavy tackling and entertaining affairs. I’m sure today’s will be no exception with the amount of tenacious and attacking forward-thinking lads from both sides on view.
You always get to Christmas and instead of looking back you need to take stock and look ahead. We are in a good position but with so many games to play every match we play will have that ‘Cup Final’ feel. The squad is in good shape and with the likes of Lewis Round looking likely to return early in the New Year, it will give us that boost of a new signing feel which will be a great addition. Wishing everyone a belated Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.
Established in 1908 as Dartmouth United, the club began competing in the Torbay and District League. They later moved to the Plymouth and District League, winning the title five times, but went back to the South Devon League in 1968, winning the competition twice before being promoted to the Devon League in 1995. They finished fourth in their first season and were runners-up in 1997.
In 1999, Dartmouth United and Dartmouth YMRC amalgamated to form the present Dartmouth AFC. The new club won the Devon League title in 2002, 2003 and 2007, moving up to become founder members of the South West Peninsula League. After five seasons, however, they left to rejoin the South Devon League. Finishing third in 2015 and runners-up the following year, Dartmouth successfully applied for promotion back to the restructured Peninsula League in 2019.
Their home ground is Longcross, Milton Lane, TQ6 9LW.

Possibly Dartmouth’s best-known former player is Ralph Birkett. Born in Torquay, Birkett signed for the Gulls in 1930 and spent three seasons there, scoring 19 goals in 95 games from the right wing before moving to Arsenal, where he won a Championship winner’s medal in his first season. Struggling to dislodge Joe Hulme from the team, Birkett moved to Middlesbrough in 1935. He won his only England cap against Northern Ireland in 1935. He was selected to play a second match but was forced to withdraw through injury, his replacement being a young Stanley Matthews. Moving to Newcastle United in 1938, the Second World War cut short his career. Birkett retired to Brixham, where he died in 2002 at the age of 89.

THIS isn’t exactly breaking news but Jude Bellingham is really good at football. In fact, it’s quite scary how good he is.
Aged just 19, he has spent the last few weeks in Qatar stamping his mark on the world stage as one of England’s stand-out performers in their run to the World Cup quarter-finals.
Having set up the first in England’s 3-0 win over Senegal, his drive and class also produced the second. Winning the ball back, galloping up the pitch, holding off his man, picking the optimum time to release a perfectly weighted ball into the path of Phil Foden.
While the country enthuses over the Borussia Dortmund midfielder, surely a future England captain, it's been tempting to lean over mid-game and say, ‘Yeah, but did you hear about his dad?’
Goal machine doesn’t do Mark Bellingham justice. Born in Southend, he netted his first goal for East Thurrock against Horsham YMCA way back in August 1994.
In 2016, by then a sergeant in West Midlands Police, he knocked in his 700th for Paget Rangers in Midland League Division Two.
“I’ve started to score a lot more tap-ins and the range is getting a lot shorter” Bellingham told The NLP back at the time. “The 700th was a free-kick which isn’t regular for me at all, anything outside the box for me is abnormal!
“I needed 38 goals last season but got to 36 and then was banned for the last game because of a red card – my first ever sending-off.
“I was thinking over the summer whether it was the right time to go out, but with just two needed to reach 700, it felt like there was a bit of unfinished business.
“It’s out of the way now so I can chill out. I’ll play as much as I can for Paget, who have been great with me, and hopefully score a few more!”
To get there he had prolific spells with the likes of Stourbridge, Leamington, Sutton Coldfield, Bromsgrove Rovers and Halesowen Town and reckoned his 700 haul came in 850 games.
I had the pleasure of speaking to Mark many times over the years as he racked up goal after goal, usually playing down his own qualities each time.
“I’ve managed my ability well, I’ve always said I’m not that great a player and although I’m still scoring, I am playing at Step 7!” he said.
“Most of the 700 were from not very far out so I think I owe my team-mates over the years a lot more than they owe me.”
You don’t score that many goals without possessing those priceless attributes that help stick the ball in the back of the net.
Of course his job in the police no doubt gave him a sense of perspective, but perhaps it’s no surprise when we see the maturity Jude shows in front of the camera the influence his parents had on him and younger brother Jobe, who is also making his mark at Birmingham City.
As Jude told The FA in an interview last year: "When you go and watch him play every week in Non-League, you know it's not the Premier League or anything, but seeing the way that he played and the atmosphere, it made me fall in love with football so he was probably my first hero.
“After the first few times of going, I’d start to pay a bit more attention to the games and stuff, the atmosphere and he's scoring goals so you see him celebrating and stuff like that - you want that to be me.”
It certainly is now.
I dug up the old interview with Bellingham senior from his 700th goal this week and the sign off to asking how much longer he would carry on is fitting.
“I’m 40 now so I think this season will probably be my last,” he said. “I’m playing veterans’ football a bit more on Sundays and my eldest son is now playing for Birmingham U16s – maybe it’s time to finally step away.”
Bellingham junior is certainly making that decision worth it.

I would like to begin by wishing everyone connected with the football club a very Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.
I would, as always, like to thank our supporters for their backing throughout 2022; we have seen an increase in gate receipts and sales of season tickets which hopefully proves we are heading in the right direction.
I wish to thank all of the committee who do a wonderful job behind the scenes and thanks to our major sponsor Alex and Nathan from More Seafoods for their continued support over the past year along with our kit and board sponsors.
Both senior teams continue on course to achieve our objectives and the first half of the season has seen some major highlights including our FA Cup win over Tavistock and our continuing FA Vase run with wins over Odd Down, Andover and more recently Shaftesbury. Please come and support the boys on January 14th against Raynes Park Vale in the Fourth Round, it’s been a brilliant achievement for the club and especially Jason, Tim, Steve and all the playing squad, also currently the reserves are sitting third in the Premier and I personally would like to say a big thankyou to Lee and Neil for everything they are achieving with the reserves.
As for our future senior fish, this season has seen the club bring in a new under 16s team managed by Andy Raybould, Andy has been a breath of fresh air and I am sure under his guidance it won’t be too long before we see some stars coming through into the senior ranks. They have already reached the quarter-finals of the county cup.
I thank all the coaches and helpers in the junior section who voluntarily give their time to help these young boys and girls to develop both as people and footballers. Thanks also to all of our wonderful Junior players. You have been a credit to the club and we hope you are as proud to play for Brixham AFC as we are of you all, Please come and show your support on Sundays, check our Twitter and Facebook page for weekly updates and games.
Can you help?
We are on the lookout for new members to become part of our club from match day roles to pitch maintenance etc.
How do I join Brixham AFC committee?
Volunteering can be extremely rewarding, and new committee members will receive a lot of support from current members and myself. If you would like to become part of the team or would simply like more information, please get in touch, see myself, Alan or Dean or email brixhamafc.sec@outlook.com.
Finally I would like to wish everyone a very happy time over the festive period. Here’s to an even better year ahead!
Up the fish!
Everyone at Brixham AFC would like to extend condolences to Jackie and the family of former Brixham United chairman Dave Hart who sadly passed away earlier this month. For well over 30 years he was the lifeblood that kept clubs like ours going, from clearing and digging foundations for the clubhouse to setting up electric fences to keep badgers off the pitch, from frying the chips and running the bar to negotiating contracts that kept finances coming in.
Dave was part of the team that instigated the merger between Brixham United and Brixham Villa.
A wonderful and dedicated servant to Brixham United over the years who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
brand new competition, the
is about to go live!!
Here’s how it works.
The competition is limited to just 59 people, and there’s a prize every month. Hence, your chance of winning one of the twelve prizes each year is fractionally better than one in five.
Every month, the winning number – only 59 of them to choose from, remember –will win a prize of £200. And the December draw prize will be a whopping £1,000!
The winning number each month will be the bonus ball drawn in the National Lottery on the last Saturday of the month.
The cost to enter per number is just £10 a month, which over the year works out to just over a couple of quid a week. There are only the 59 numbers available so you’ll have to be quick! Get a form from the bar, fill it in, give it back and you’re in! Simples.
And good luck!!
(In the unlikely event that the winning number remains unsold for that month, half the prize will be rolled over to the following month, the other half will be given to the nearest number that has been sold)

The next match after the Christmas break is on Friday 6th January away to the Burton, play to start at 8pm.
Brentford striker Ivan Toney, who has been charged with 232 breaches of betting rules, has the middle names Benjamin Elijah, meaning his initials are I BET.
The three pears on Alvechurch FC’s badge reference the Anglo-Saxon chieftain Peardrax, who ruled over a vaste swathe of Mercia in the ninth century. Historians believe Peardrax, an incredibly violent man, was also intellectually curious, some maintaining that he came upon the central concept of Social Atomism while rotisserie cooking a Viking housekarl. At this time, of course, no-one wrote anything down (there wasn’t time) so the only evidence of this early philosophical breakthrough is to be found in the tenth century song fragment, attributed to the bard, Alfric: “Spear-armed they came, red runne the soil/Erstwhile his clansmen waxed in revel/Dwelled he on the individual as the invisible component of all social constructs”
It has also been posited that Peardrax’s heir, Aldregaad the Essentially Unknowable, originated Reflex Arc theory, but most historians believe he just enjoyed hitting himself with a spade. Cameron Carter
Pat Glenn, weightlifting commentator“And this is Gregoriava from Bulgaria. I saw her snatch this morning and it was amazing”
Ted Walsh, horse racing commentator“This is really a lovely horse. I once rode her mother” Steve Ryder covering the US Masters“Ballesteros felt much better today after a 69 yesterday” Ken Brown commentating on Nick Faldo and his caddie Fanny Sunneson lining up a shot at the Scottish Open“Some weeks Nick likes to use Fanny, other weeks he prefers to do it by himself” Mike Hallett discussing missed snooker shots on Sky Sports“Stephen Hendry jumps on Steve Davis’s misses every chance he gets” And for the older ones amongst us, yes, David Coleman DID once describe Asa Hartford as ‘a wholehearted player’
Seasonal greetings to all my social media sources!
