Review the design brief

Rodolfo & Elena, who are in the UX team, explained the task to me. They told me, make a mobile version of this website in Sketch and try to keep it looking the same as the website. For me it was important to ask as many questions as I could, to fully understand the brief.

Research and discovery

Rodolfo told me to look for UI designs on Pinterest. This was good advice, because there are many different examples. The buttons for example, they need to be in the right position at your screen, it's important to think about all these small elements. In the end, this makes the difference. At first, I placed the button all the way down the screen, which is totally

not logical - your thumb can't handle that movement while holding your phone.

The important things to keep in mind

- Understanding the business

- Target demographic (age, gender, location)

- History & culture of the brand

- Understanding the brand value and vision

- The client's industry and main competitors

Brainstorm and sketch concepts

In ANCHOVY. it's up to you if you'd like to make some sketches, but normally we don't really make sketches. So also for this task, I didn't need to make any sketches. Rodolfo already

03

made a wireframe, which is similar. Brainstorming wasn't really necessary for this task either. The brainstorming part was already done by Rodolfo.

Workflow

The workflow went like this: I sat next to Rodolfo so he could see what I was doing. If I had a question I could easily ask him, since I sat nearby. If he didn't have time, I asked Elena or just waited when he finished his task, while waiting I did another task or looked for other things I could do.

Feedback

As a designer, it's important to get feedback to know if you're on the right track or not. To know your weaknesses is extremely

useful, from there you can further develop. Rodolfo and Elena checked my work and they weren't afraid to give their expert opinion on what looks best and not. They're the creative lead in this relationship, they told me to do some quick changes such as colour or the thickness of lines.

Finished I needed to export the UX designs as SVG's and upload it on Basecamp. The only thing that I do when uploading is, explaining which steps I took and their thoughts.

Makes a schedule

They announced the task 2 weeks before it needed to be done, but in the meantime I also had other tasks to do. I worked on it when I felt there was free time left.

Creates a concept

My research was looking at other posts on Instagram of ANCHOVY. They have a certain style, which is important to keep it in the same line as all the other posts.

Monitors progress & assesses the results of outsourcing or subproject I did.

Maintains the (digital) archive

Yes.

My goals

My goal was to give it a happy twist, since this post is meant to show ANCHOVY. 10 years anniversary. To keep it clean but at the same time a bit busy.

Orient

Research on their Instagram, also to compare other posts. I looked on Pinterest for some more inspiration as well.

01

02

Task for ANCHOVY. (internal task).

Task ''A'' Experimentation - static for on their Instagram feed.

Looking back

I really liked making this, because I immediately found a good picture of a cake, this makes it much easier to start the design and build up from there.

03

Competencies

Trying different versions and eventually looking which looks best, comparing and sharing.

Agreements

The ''A'' always needs to stay in the same position, so it doesn't looks messy on their IG feed. This was something to keep in mind.

Colour

The colour was not really important, as long as it fits to ANCHOVY. it's okay. I choose for a blue background colour, to create some contrast. The blue colour comes back in the cake as well.

Typography & fonts

Not applicable.

Pictures / illustrations

I downloaded a picture from Unsplash, it's always really important to find a good picture to work with, it just simply speeds up the process. On freepik I searched for small details like the burning candle.

Makes a schedule

There was not really a schedule needed for this task. The time we got was about 3 weeks for 15 x statics.

Creates a concept

First of all, I did some research on the website of Optika. I looked for good pictures I could use. Second, I tried to look for other pictures which fit the glasses and the mood.

Monitors progress & assesses the results of outsourcing or subproject I did.

Maintains the (digital) archive

Yes.

My goals

My goals for this task: to get everything done just in time. That every different static matched each other, so they'll look different but still have similarities.

Orient

To do research on their website, Facebook & Instagram, also to look at previous statics ANCHOVY. made for Optika. After seeing this, I kept this in mind by executing the task.

01

02

Client Optika Opticians

Task 15 x mood statics for on Instagram and Facebook.

Looking back

I'm happy with the end result, it took some time, since we made a lot of different versions of these statics. All the small elements around the main glasses took a lot of time, but in the end it was all worth it.

03

Competencies

I took some notes, it helped me to stick to the rules as we talk about the design elements. I pointed out which was important to keep in mind.

Agreements

It was important to keep each static with the same shadow, also the colours needed to match each other. And the same positioning of the typography.

Colour

The colour needed to fit the mood.

Typography & fonts

The typography is on each different static the same. Fonts: Georgia (bold) & Proxima Nova (bold).

Pictures / illustrations

The pictures of the glasses we got from the website of Optika. The other small elements around it, are from other websites; Freepik/Unsplash/Storyblocks & Pexels.

Task

Make an Instagram & Facebook static for a personalized necklace.

Looking back

This was one of my first assignments, I really liked doing it. They didn't have a high resolution picture of the necklace, so I needed to rebuild everything. It was not easy, but I'm very happy with the end result. The colour combination attracts me as well.

03

Competencies

I only took notes of which necklace they wanted to be shown and what the text needed to be.

Agreements

The only thing what we discussed was about the text and which necklace exactly.

Colour

The colour green belongs to Sterling and in combination with a dark brown background and white letters seemed for me the perfect combination and contrast. It gives a charming look on it.

Typography & fonts

The typography needed to match the necklace and I thought this fits the brand, because it looks powerful. Fonts: Playfair Display (bold) & Fira sans (Thin)

What guidance do you receive from your practical trainer during the execution of the assignments?

My tasks will be applied on Basecamp (an online platform we use in the company). This platform shows me what the client expects and what needs to be done. When I want more explanation or help, I ask the person who gave me the task or I'll ask Philip (my supervisor). Philip helps me to understand exactly what needs to be done.

The 3 evaluation moments with my practical trainer

18/10/19

My BPV came to visit me at my work. Leonieke and I talked a lot about how my experience have been for the last 2 months. I told her I feel really glad when I heard about ANCHOVY. because my working experience brought me a lot of new ideas and gave me such an incredible view of a creative agency. ANCHOVY. is in my point of view, very different compared to other companies. It has a big and young team, which I think is really inspiring. After Leonieke and I talked, we invited Philip to join the conversation, to discuss everything what I told Leonieke earlier. I told him my experience so far. What are the things I struggle with and what goals I like to achieve the next months.

Conclusion:

For me it was an eyeopener when Leonieke visited me, because after finally telling my struggles to my supervisor and have just a good conversation, I improved my skills more and more. It's good to know what things should be improved and if I'm on the right track.

09/12/20

The second conversation was with Philip, we talked about my skills and what still can be improved. Philip thought I already improved a lot of skills, so he saw some progression. We pointed out some important requirements. We thought I needed to ask for help, so that I can finish my work faster.

Conclusion:

It was a good conversation, the point of these conversations is that there is a focus towards sharing and learning about something, whether it's about work or personal matters.

10/01/20

Last but not least, the third conversation! Philip and I discussed my skills again and if I gained my working experience. The result was definitely yes, we didn't talk to long this time, since we're both busy with a lot of work, but for me it has a lot of value, no matter how long the conversation lasted. It's good to know if you improved your skills from the start till the end of the internship and the strengths and weaknesses.

Conclusion:

Thank you for all your help Philip and your endless patience.

PAGE 61
With Philip Mercieca (Lead designer) (& my supervisor)

Tell me about yourself?

My name is Philip Mercieca and I'm 24 years old. I joined ANCHOVY. in July 2016 as an intern, and after I achieved a degree in Graphic Design & Interactive Media. I joined the team as an employee a year later. I'm interested in all design, whether its static, animated, from interactive to print, I just love design in general. 50% Lil Pump, 50% Taylor Swift.

How did you become a Graphic Designer?

I was always into art and I paint a lot, but he didn't like the chemistry so he ended up with another passion, graphic design.

What do you do in your current job?

My main goal is to show the team they can execute designs on the highest quality what they can achieve.

For how long do you work at ANCHOVY. ? 4 years.

Why ANCHOVY. ?

He heard about it in school, then he started as an intern at ANCHOVY.

What do you like the most about working at ANCHOVY. ?

The variety of work and the clients.

What are your strengths and weaknesses as a designer?

Strengths: A lot. Weaknesses: To photograph.

What should a graphic designer say in an interview?

Clearly explaining their interests and what their value is to the company.

Tell me about a project you’re proud of?

A campaign for Lufthansa. I needed to promote their WiFi on the airplane. What I liked most about it wasn't the result, but the process.

How do you keep yourself updated with the latest design trends?

Doing a lot of research, reading, seeing articles, seeing stuff on Instagram, seeing what cool brands do and after all, sharing.

What do you do when project managers or clients don’t like your design?

Revalue it, take their feedback and continue moving forward from there.

How do you convey your ideas to project managers or other designers?

Clearly explaining the idea, for example, by showing a storyboard.

How do you stay organized or keep up with deadlines?

To make a to do list in the morning. Seeing which task is urgent and which is less urgent.

What do you do outside of work? Travel.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In another country, but still working as a graphic designer.

What do you expect of me as an intern?

Experience is the most important thing, such as feeling the atmosphere at work.

Your last thoughts?

Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless like water if you put water in the cup it becomes the cup and water can flow or it can crash.

Workflow

Workflow, when scheduled tasks are assigned to the lead designer. When time comes the lead designer would add in any necessary comments to the task to add to the brief is already in the task. In some cases the lead designer will have to create their own task and brief.

Before the the day of execution, the lead designer should assign the task to the assigned designer. When execution is complete the assigned designer would assign to the lead designer for approval. In this phase the lead designer can ask for a second approval from the concept provider. If not approved, the task will either go to the previous assigned designer or a more suitable one.

When the task is completed the lead designer assigns the task to the appropriate person/department.

When it comes to changes, small changes can be assigned straight to the designer who handled the execution, and big changes will be assigned to the lead designer who will decide on who will handle the changes.

Procedures

Urgent tasks should be sent in a day before its execution (Unless they are approved from Benji or Megan)

When sending execution, tasks should always be sent the lead designer.

The designer should always work from NAS with the right file structure the atmosphere at work.

''Have patience, all things are difficult before they become easy''. - Saadi

This internship has been of tremendous value to me, and my future career as a graphic designer. ANCHOVY. has done a fantastic job of showing me exactly what I would be doing as a professional in their line of work and it has reaffirmed my desire to pursue a career in curation and research after I graduate.

The skills that I've learned so far in my time at ANCHOVY. will be invaluable to me in the future. This internship has also gave me a lot of self confidence in what I do.

It was a pleasure to meet you ANCHOVY. Thank you for everything & (special thanks to Philip Mercieca).

See you !
