2025 Telpara Hills Brangus and UltraBlacks Bull and Female Sale

Page 1

FROM TELPARA HILLS WELCOME

After a few challenging years in the cattle industry, we are seeing prices and excitement building again in 2025. All the indicators are there for very healthy times ahead for beef and the red meat production; with increasing global demand, a relatively good season in Queensland, and record prices in competing markets such as the USA.

This is the time to build. By injecting your herd with quality genetics, it places you in the prime position to take advantage of markets when they do inevitably rise. For those who purchased in the past few years, that was a savvy move. We trust you are seeing the results in improved efficiency, weights, growth, carcase quality, and demand for your steers. More importantly we hope those sires created females you want to retain in your herd and will have an impact for generations to come.

This year, we believe the lineup is star-studded; full of bulls that could be a herd sire for stud duties, or take your commercial operation to the next level. In every paddock, it’s easy to pick bulls that exceed expectations. They look fantastic, are sound, have great EBVs, scan data, etc. As the saying goes, they tick all the boxes.

The 2025 standouts include outstanding sons and daughters of the world acclaimed Telpara Hills Mach 5 bull, together with awesome Ultrablack bulls by the $280K MM Rocket Man, Mill Brae Benchmark, MM Rembrandt, and MW Reality Q170 who have taken our Ultrablack programme to yet another level.

We’d like to remind buyers to consider their own cow herd when selecting bulls. If going over pure Brahman herds, you want to strike the balance of going as low a Brahman percentage as your country will allow, so that the sire will have the greatest impact. This is why we have seen the popularity of UltraBlacks in the north rise, yet we still offer a range of bulls to suit the requirements of the country where these bulls are going. No matter the label, the bulls offered here meet the high Telpara standards. There are noteworthy bulls here as Brangus, UltraBlacks, and as higher Brahman percentage sires. Heifers are always a highlight too. It’s rare for anyone to sell the good ones like we do. Perhaps it’s because we have conducted so many AI, ET, and IVF programs over the years, we have multiplied the truly great female genetics and can offer so many in our Sale. The notable programs are built on outstanding cows, and this has been the backbone of our success. We always encourage breeders to think beyond the bulls, and if you want true greatness, you have to start with the best females you can find.

Nothing makes us happier than hearing about the success our customers have had with the genetics purchased from Telpara Hills over the years. Thankfully, we see this all the time and now the demand for Black cattle is skyrocketing in the North. The time is right to invest in quality Telpara Hills genetics. We look forward to hearing about your success in years to come,

Some of the hardworking Pearce family who with our awesome crew last year, work behind the scenes to create an exciting sale event.

RETAINED SHARE

All bulls sell with 80% semen marketing rights, giving the buyer the majority share in any potential semen revenue. If the buyer chooses to do so, we believe there is a great opportunity to market these bulls through our semen company, TGG. In our experience these genetics are outperforming many imported sires. Should any purchaser wish to operate on the basis of 100% ownership, please contact Telpara Hills at least 24 hours prior to the Sale. Under all circumstances and all bull lots, the vendors retain the right to collect semen at a later date at our expense. The buyer takes full possession of the bull.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION - In order to make the most informed decisions about your bull, we will provide a Supplementary Sheet prior to the Sale with full scan data, DNA, and semen testing results. We highly encourage you to look at the IMF % in particular. It measures marbling which the Telpara Hills herd is renowned for. A guide to reading scan results is included on page 5.

INSURANCE - All lots become the property of the buyer at the fall of the hammer therefore we highly recommend insurance. As the Sale is on a Saturday, we recommend speaking to your chosen representative prior to the Sale if possible.

ART MEETS SCIENCE:

Cattle breeding is first and foremost an art. Nothing can replace evaluation with your eyes. We never choose an animal based purely on data. They always have to look the part, and at a bare minimum, any genetics we use in our herd have to come from cattle who have the basics of functionality and fertility.

If you breed exceptionally good phenotype cattle as a priority, the numbers should and will follow.

That’s why Telpara Hills genetics or closely related animals make up 90% of the top 50 animals in the Brangus breed for 600 Day Weight EBVs. Our cattle are bred to put on weight fast!

We use all the tools, EBVs, scan data, DNA, and of course, our eyes. Just as importantly, we pass along that information to our customers so you can make informed decisions. It’s all important.

A BASIC GUIDE TO EBVS:

EBV stands for estimated breeding value. It’s purpose is to predict the performance of an animal and takes into account the weights, measurements, genomics, scan data of each animal, the performance of animals in their pedigrees, and tries to remove differences in environment and feeding.

We find that looking at the ranking of animals is most helpful, which shows how an animal should perform when compared to other Brangus stud animals that are enrolled in the EBV system.

The rankings of animals in this sale are simply outstanding and predict that these Sale lots will inject huge weight gains into your herd.

SCAN DATA SIMPLIFIED:

Ultrasound Scan Data of the meat quality of a living animal is still extremely valuable information. In fact, our Brangus herd was based on “Brinks” bloodlines out of the USA; pioneers starting in the 1960s for using scan data to select animals with superior carcase qualities, especially marbling. Because of this, our scan data often rivals the very best Angus herds, and the meat quality is outstanding.

A very general guide to reading scan data:

IMF- stands for inter muscular fat, aka marbling. This is a huge factor in giving meat tenderness and flavour. More is better. Anything over 5% is a good score for the industry, 6% is top quality, 7% or more are breed leaders.

EMA- stands for Eye Muscle Area. This is a measurement of the muscle along the spine of an animal, a premium cut of beef, and is a good indicator of the overall amount of muscle and yield. More is also better, but in moderation. For bulls, a very general guide is a 110cm² EMA for a yearling bull that is less than 2 years of age is good, 120cm² EMA for a 2-year-old bull, a 130cm2 EMA for 3-year-old bull. Bulls that have been used will see a slight reduction. Heifers will have much lower scores, but you can still compare animal to animal.

Fat Thickness: This is a measurement of the fat that is along the outside of the muscle. There are two measurements, rib measured between the 12th and 13th ribs, and P8 which is along the rump. What we like to see here is an animal’s ability to put on fat, but not be overdone. For Rib Fat 5-10mm is ideal, and Rump 7-15mm. If an animal is out of this range it will skew other measurements.

BALANCE

IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS:

We advise to not chase extremes in any trait, but always keep in mind the overall animal. For example, a high EMA can be a wonderful way to put more muscle into your herd, but chasing higher and higher EMA scores can lead to coarseness, lack of fertility, and can cause sizing issues in the restaurant trade. We like to never chase extremes and always consider matching strengths to the needs of a cow herd.

BRANGUS VS ULTRABLACKS:

Simply put, an UltraBlack is the result of Registered Brangus crossed with Registered Angus, creating an animal with excellent eating quality but with a touch of Brahman for survivability and hybrid vigour. An UltraBlack is ideal for those wanting to try pure Angus, but still need some resistance to the challenges of a hotter climate.

BRAHMAN

Over the years we have found that the “sweet spot” in Brahman percentage in our Brangus cattle is 37.5% (that’s 3/8 Brahman: 5/8 Angus). This produces an animal that is extremely versatile. This ‘Telpara Type’ of Brangus has been proven to work well in even the toughest conditions, often over all Brahman cow herds, yet has enough Angus content to have a major impact on the resulting calves. They have been bred at this percentage for generations, making them stable and predictable.

37.5% Brahman: Telpara Type of Brangus- Extremely versatile, adaptable, optimum benefit

75%-25% Brahman: Can be fully registered as Brangus with the Australian Brangus Cattle Association

25-37% Brahman: Higher Generation UltraBlack that can be fully registered as Brangus with the ABCA

8-25% Brahman: UltraBlacks that can with registered with the ABCA as UltraBlacks only

UltraBlacks’ Brahman percentage can range from 8%-25%, depending on generations since the first cross, sometimes referred to as UB1, UB2, etc. UltraBlacks can be registered with the Australian Brangus Cattle Association from 8-25% and UltraBlacks over 25% can usually qualify for full Brangus registration status. We even have 5 lots in the sale that are only 9.4% Brahman, which we have marked as Angus Plus (still qualify for UltraBlack registration).

DNA RESULTS:

All the lots in this sale have DNA profiles on file with the Australian Brangus Cattle Association (some are pending). With both our Telpara Type Brangus and new UltraBlacks, these bloodlines have 2 copies of the polled gene as well as black coats. However, with the introduction of higher Brahman content options, some of those animals have a small scur and can breed with less consistency than our classic Telpara bloodlines.

PREDOMINATELY POLLED:

Telpara Hills Brangus & UltraBlack animals are predominately polled, with zero horned animals, which is a huge achievement and advantage to those who use Telpara Hills bulls.

PcPc = Homozygous Poll

Hpc = Heterozygous Poll

No result of homozygous horn in this sale

DOUBLE BLACK:

The vast majority of Telpara Hills type lots have 2 copies of the Black Coat gene, as well as our UltraBlack options. With the high Brahman content animals, they are all still dominant black, but may have less consistency depending on the females they are mated to. Still, they are excellent options for those who are in especially harsh environments.

ED/ED = Homozygous Dominant Black

ED/E+ = Dominant Coat ED/E+

ED/e = Dominant Black/recessive red

No result of homozygous wildtypes in this sale

The after-sale care of your new bull is one of the most critical in his life. He must transition into a new environment and a new herd, and the care and consideration you give him can make all the difference.

A few tips:

The truck ride can be stressful. When he unloads, place him with a few females or steers as companions, not rival bulls. This will help him settle into his new home.

Cattle learn best from one another. If you are working them with horses or dogs, keeping your new bull with a small herd is a simple and effective way to incorporate them into the normal workings of your farm.

Keep bulls on a rising or steady plane of nutrition. Also ensure your females are on a rising plane of nutrition to give them the best chance of cycling.

Ensure you continue his recommended regime of vaccinations.

Superb EBV profile – a galaxy of unique results, 7 times in top 5% of the breed and higher.

Super Quiet disposition on this bull. Broken in just 2 weeks before Malanda Show and drew high praise from experienced judge Graham Brown of RSVP Droughtmasters. Every time the Mill Brae Benchmark 9016 bull produces a breed topping line of EBV scores with his progeny; they are so densely packed for performance. We really think highly of our Benchmarks, especially this bull.

Please note, Neutron has a healed injury to his ear. It has been Vet checked.

An eye-catching young female, slightly lower set, with that extra thickness and flat, widely muscled back line characteristic of the River Run 20 stock out of the Suhn’s Foundation x 541L70 Final Cut daughters. Typically, they breed huge EMAs, which equates to more muscle in your calves.

With nearly 50% Brahman content she will appeal to breeders who require a more tropically adapted female herd, or would be perfect to pair with an UltraBlack sire.
