PPL 2018 sees my first venture to SXSW. The festival has created a buzz which resonates throughout the global music industry, and I am really looking forward to my first visit. Passion is at the heart of the festival, and it is exciting to think that we will be a part of the journey for these inspiring British artists who could go on to dominate the world stage. The late great Amy Winehouse who performed at SXSW more than 10 years ago is perhaps the most famous example. For a second consecutive year, PPL is financially supporting - via the PRS Foundation - more than 35 acts performing at the famous British Music Embassy at Latitude 30. Whilst our operations are driven by data, our motivation is powered by a passion for music. We believe music makes the world a better place.

Peter Leathem,
Chief Executive Officer, PPL

FOREWORD

PRS For Music I may be a little biased, but one only has to look at the International charts to conclude that we British are producing some of the best music in the world right now. And this success is due in no small part to the incredibly talented songwriters we have – whether they’re working hard behind the scenes in writers rooms, studios or performing their music live on stage. From my first ever trip to Austin, Texas in 2004 where I was lucky enough to see Snow Patrol and Dizzee Rascal very early in their careers, to this year’s excellent line-up, SXSW has continued to grow every year as an important milestone in any future star’s career – one that is often pivotal to their success. And of course, the British Music Embassy at SXSW is the place to go to see the best of British music. With such a wide range of talent on display, including Superorganism, Yxng Bane and Lucy Spraggan, I am so proud that PRS for Music and PPL have come together once again to support the British Music Embassy, and all those that are performing at Latitude 30 this year. We hope you enjoy this year’s SXSW, and if you see us at the British Music Embassy, do come and say hi and tell us which artists and bands have blown you away so far!

Nigel Elderton, PRS for Music Chairman

LIFE It is fair to say that LIFE have become the British Music Embassy’s de facto house band. Hull’s loudest self-released their politically astute debut L.P. “Popular Music” last year with strong support from Radio 1 and 6 Music, and received glowing reviews from DIY and The Guardian.

lifeband@hotmail.co.uk lifeband.co.uk

Wyldest Blending hazy shoegaze with gossamer synth-pop, London trio Wyldest have been creating their own self-sufficient story since appearing in 2015. Long term support comes from DIY, The Line Of Best Fit and Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, while comparisons range from Warpaint and Grimes to Blonde Redhead and Chairlift.

Emme Woods There’s life and death… and in between it all there’s the party. Enter Emme Woods.Soul, sass and sparks collide to create one of the most exciting female singers of our generation. Blending rock’n’roll and blues influences with a hypnotic brood, Emme has curated a truly bespoke 60s sound.

LIFE A resolutely DIY force based in Hull, punk bunch LIFE cemented the last few years of righteous noise-making with 2017 debut LP “Popular Music”. A taut, wired jab of prickly post-punk and dancefloor-ready disenfranchisement, it found the quartet taking aim at apathy and spitting out a canon that sneers like Mark E. Smith and shimmies like Jarvis Cocker.

lifeband@hotmail.co.uk • lifeband.co.uk

Our Girl Fronted by The Big Moon’s resident axe-wielderin-chief Soph Nathan, Our Girl takes the singer’s already-proven way with an emotionally charged riff and roots it in something altogether darker. Full of tunes that lull you into a false sense of security before unleashing all crashing hell, Our Girl are paving the way towards a debut album that’s sure to send your spine all a-shiver.

tim@cannibal.ltd facebook.com/weareourgirl

Francobollo Swedish born and London based, Francobollo spent the majority of debut album “Long Live Life” channelling the music of neither region. Instead fusing all-American riffs with some space-age proginfluenced wizardry, the likes of “Good Times” and “Finally” proved it doesn’t really matter where this lot dwell in reality: musically, they’re aiming for a whole different world.

MONDAY

Catholic Action Where many of the UK’s new bands spent 2017 penning vitriolic state-of-the-nation diatribes, Glasgow’s Catholic Action understood that joyful escapism is just as important a tool as cold, hard reality. Like fellow Scotsmen Franz Ferdinand before them, LP “In Memory Of” set the quartet up as purveyors of angular hip-shaking bangers par excellence. And that suits us just fine.

scott@skmgmt.co.uk, wcspmanagement@ hotmail.com, facebook.com/catholicactionband

Boniface The latest to join Transgressive Records’ impressive stable, Canadian singer Boniface has already shown an intriguing amount of variety in just two songs. Double AA side “I Will Not Return As A Tourist”/ “Again & Again” finds him penning propulsive synthy hedonism on the former and introverted acoustics on the latter. Let’s see how this one unfolds...

feedy@moshimoshimusic.com bonifaceofficial.com

Breakfast Muff Gloriously lo-fi exports of Glasgow’s thriving DIY punk scene, the charmingly named Breakfast Muff deal in ramshackle, fuzzy guitars and wonky, idiosyncratic lyrics, waxing lyrical on feminism, feelings and the perils of the baby boomer generation. Latest LP “Eurgh!” straddled the line between playful and political, throwing off-kilter ideas together with a distinct left-wing world view.

Previous generations have had their influencer brand and, over the last fourteen years, DIY has become the music discovery media platform for a new generation of artists and fans who are still passionate about music. DIY is the UK’s largest free magazine dedicated to music and–more importantly– supporting emerging artists as a music discovery brand. We have an international following of over 1m+ a month (500,000 on social media alone), reinforced by a national presence led by our print magazine, which boasts distribution at over 200+ outlets, now including Rough Trade NYC. DIY also offers an ongoing programme of regional live events and hosts stages at festivals like The Great Escape and Latitude where we help to showcase great new acts. We are also increasingly active in promoting artists overseas, with our team attending events like Eurosonic, Mad Cool, Nos Alive, Bilbao BBK Live and Reeperbahn, as well as US festivals such as SXSW and Mondo.NYC. Sonic is DIY’s publisher and also provides an array of commercial and marketing services (tour management, artist relations, advertising, partnerships) to brands, festivals, labels and music institutions, including a network of independent music blogs. diymag.com @diymagazine

Himalayas Himalayas are one of the buzziest bands to bust out of Cardiff in the past twelve months. Think lean, muscular blues of the Royal Blood variety. With single “Sigh on a Hurricane” receiving love from BBC Music Introducing in Wales and Huw Stephens, Himalayas are unleashing their melodic rock monsters on the British Embassy.

contact@peepshowrecords.com himalayasband.co

Jerry Williams Fans of Jamie T and Slow Club–take note. From early doors support from BBC Music Introducing Solent–to Introducing Track of the Week on Radio 1 –the party’s just getting started for this Portsmouth 21 year-old. You’ll be humming along to single “Velcro” all day. Allow at least 24 hours for the effects to wear off.

jeff@bighugmanagement.com facebook.com/Jerrywilliamsmusic

Rachel K Collier Rachel K Collier is a writer, producer and vocalist who blends her passion for house and percussive sounds with pop to make music that is utterly unique. A diehard Ableton enthusiast, the Welsh star is making waves on YouTube with her impressive live performances using a multiinstrument technical setup.

TUESDAY

Pale Waves With The 1975 on downtime between albums, this Manchester band are poised to fill the gap. It’s no coincidence 1975 main man Matt Healy co-produced their first two singles. Their lovesick nineties-pop won hearts on the Introducing Stage at Reading and Leeds. Tipped for big things in the BBC Music Sound Of poll, it bodes well for their debut album this year.

mark@allonred.org palewaves.co.uk

Bugzy Malone Arguably the hottest act in the UK grime revival, the rapper’s meteoric rise has seen all three EPs land in the UK Albums Chart Top 10. With support from Introducing in Manchester and Mistajam at BBC Radio 1xtra, to conquering 1Xtra Live in Manchester, witness The King of the North in action.

bugzymaloneteam@gmail.com thebugzymaloneshow.co.uk

Touts Representing Introducing in Northern Ireland, debut single ‘Sold Out’ crashed into our eardrums in early 2017. Soon grabbing the attention of Huw Stephens and Phil Taggart at BBC Radio 1, the Derry upstarts stormed the Introducing stage at Reading and Leeds. Thrilling as they are on headphones, Touts need to be witnessed live.

BBC Music Introducing supports the best unsigned, undiscovered and under the radar music from across the UK. Since it launched in 2007 over 195,000 artists have registered, uploading more than 500,000 songs.

BBC MUSIC INTRODUCING

PRS Foundation’s International Showcase Fund offers vital support for artists, bands, songwriters and producers based in England, Scotland and Wales who have been invited to play an international showcasing festival or conference such as SXSW, A3C, Eurosonic, Womex, Reeperbahn and Folk Alliance International. Up to £5,000 is available as a contribution to travel, visas, accommodation, and per diems. This year at SXSW, PRS Foundation has supported 23 of the artists performing at the British Music Embassy through the International Showcase Fund, and a further 6 through our partnership with BBC Music Introducing. Our most recent evaluation revealed that for every £1 of International Showcase Fund investment, artists generated an additional £8.90 in revenues. The International Showcase Fund is a partnership between PRS Foundation, Department for International Trade, British Underground, Arts Council England, the Musicians’ Union, PPL, Creative Scotland, Wales Arts International and Arts Council Wales in association with PledgeMusic. Breakfast Muff From Glasgow’s fertile DIY punk scene come Breakfast Muff, a thrillingly uncompromising pop trio whose bandmates Eilidh, Simone and Cal switch between guitar, bass and drums in a cacophony of anxiety, celebration and creativity. Their live shows, renowned for their energy and excitement, veer between defiant anger and joyous celebration..

Doe Scholars of the Biffy Clyro school of anthemic riffs, London’s Doe play the kind of instantly attentiongrabbing three-minute monsters that’ll assault your senses and leave them shaking in their boots. 2016 debut ‘Some Things Last Longer Than You’ is like Blood Red Shoes hyped up on power chords - aka massive.

hellowearedoe@gmail.com doetheband.co.uk

Our Girl From the same Cannibal Hymns stable as Dream Wife and Tigercub come Our Girl. You might recognise front woman Soph Nathan from another act that played BME last year, but the hotly tipped, Bill Ryder-Jones produced grungers Our Girl are an entirely different beast.

IDLES This five man rage-machine absolutely decimated the British Music Embassy when they played for us last year. Around SXSW last year they released their debut long player “Brutalism” which is is a bracing tour de force, perhaps even a definition of punk rock in 2018.

mark@motherartistmanagement.com idlesband.com

Shame Another standout performance from SXSW 2017, Shame’s debut album “Songs of Praise” was released in January via Dead Oceans. It is a fantastic record and just for once that hugely overused plaudit “universal acclaim” is completely applicable.

Jade Bird Ward Thomas and The Shires are proving the UK’s appetite for home-grown Americana. Enter Jade Bird. Honing her craft since she was 12 years-old, the Surrey artist credits her inspiration to strong working women – her mum and grandmother. Nominated as part of the BBC Sound of 2018, Jade Bird is one to asterisk in your schedule.

Frank Turner Seven solo albums, a word-of-mouth cult following – he’s even headlined Wembley Arena. Punk and politics are Frank Turner’s modus operandi. Ahead of his new album “Be More Kind” this May, he says “somewhere in the record, there’s a convergence of the ideas of personal and political”. This is set to be unmissable.

Sam Fender Just when you think there are no new pop songs, think again. Forget unrequited love – Sam writes about government surveillance and fake news, and he’ll make you dance while he’s at it. Championed by Introducing in the North East, and perhaps the first BBC Music Sound Of artist to record radio hits in his garden shed.

Gaz Coombes In the thick of Britpop, he was most recognised as frontman in Supergrass. Two decades and a Mercury Music Prize nomination later, Gaz Coombes is a distinguished artist in his own right. With 2015’s “Matador” hailed by critics and audiences alike, 2018’s follow-up “World’s Strongest Man” takes influence from hip-hop and Frank Ocean.

Nina Nesbitt Chart success and DIY kudos – Nina Nesbitt is having her cake and eating it. The Scottish songwriter supported Justin Bieber in London’s Hyde Park, while 2017’s “The Best You Had” became her most streamed track on streaming sites. Leaving her major label behind to sign to indie label Cooking Vinyl, her second album is imminent.

BBC Radio 2 is the UK’s most listened-to radio station with a weekly audience of 15.36 million. The output of the station is highly distinctive, with an entertaining mix of pop music programming and speech-based content – such as news, current affairs, documentaries, religion, arts, comedy and social action output – reflecting the diversity of the UK. The station features a huge range of music, including the biggest pop tunes from the last six decades, as well as weekly specialist music shows dedicated to country, soul, funk, jazz, blues, folk, disco and show-tunes. BBC Radio 2 is also committed to encouraging and highlighting young talent, supporting music at grass roots level with the Young Chorister, Young Brass Soloist and Young Folk Award initiatives.

PPL and PRS for Music are proud to be partnering for a second year with BBC Radio 2 and Jo Whiley for this evening’s show. The line-up is a brilliant showcase of British talent who we can’t wait to see wow tonight’s audience. SXSW is a pivotal platform that can showcase new and established acts to the global music community and Radio 2 and Jo are presenting an incredible mix. The Lost Brothers Three time BME alums, Oisin Leech and Mark McCausland make a welcome return to the Output Belfast party in 2018. They have just released their new record “Halfway Towards a Healing” which they recorded with Giant Sand’s Gabriel Sullivan / Howe Gelb and received great reviews from Q, Uncut and Mojo. “The harmonies are exquisite, lending a sense of timelessness to gently understated melodies.” - Uncut.

Joshua Burnside Joshua Burnside was born in Ireland, but cites the music of Colombia, Eastern Europe and North America as the greatest influences on his unique sound. Deftly blending folk textures and melodies with elements of electronica, he has made it difficult for pundits to put him in a box. Nilüfer Yanya Nilüfer is a maverick with an edge. Absorbing influences from Nina Simone to the Pixies in her youth, the R&B lo-fi of “Golden Cage” is the sum of its parts. With heavy support from Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson, to claiming her place in the BBC Sound of 2018, Nilüfer’s star is on the rise.

LIFE Let’s talk the meaning of LIFE. From sell out shows with messrs Idles and Slaves – to a storming homecoming at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Hull – Life are about snarling, back-to-basics rock. But look closer into the lyrics - this is a band into the bigger picture more than many of their peers.

Shopping As politically aware and angry as it is disco, Shopping bring their new album “The Official Body” to the British Music Embassy. Produced by Edwyn Collins, the London-via-Glasgow outfit are bursting with ideas. Take new single ‘The Hype’. Disco-not-disco synths, spaghetti guitars – this is New Wave for 2018.

THURSDAY

Girl Ray If you’re going to call your album ‘Earl Grey’, you better brew it right. Singing odes to adolescence, it’s apt that ‘Trouble’ - their first single on Moshi Moshi Music - was recorded on their final day of school. Equal parts sweet and spooky, they’ve won the support of 6music’s Marc Riley and Lauren Laverne.

conrad@teencreeps.co.uk facebook.com/girlraylondon

Goat Girl Signed with Rough Trade before releasing a single note, the hype and attention is inevitable, but Goat Girl are more than clearing the hype bar. Purposefully keeping their off-stage presence to a minimum, the word-of-mouth buzz alone caused singles ‘Country Sleaze’ and ‘Scum’ to trend on Twitter.

milo@goldenarm.me facebook.com/goatgirlofficial

IDLES Brace yourself. At an IDLES show, expect moshpits, crowdsurfing and other such unruly behaviour. Conquering London’s O2 Arena in support of the Foo Fighters, their debut album “Brutalism” confirms a band that knows no compromise. Hardcore fans – pretty soon you’ll have to share them with the rest of the world.
