Humble Warriors #EmbraceJudo
We recently launched our embrace campaign. The aim of the campaign is twofold:
1) To grow judo membership in the UK by making the UK ‘fall in love with judo’ and 2) To increase retention by creating shared experiences
We recently launched our latest campaign, Embrace Judo, with the aim of growing British Judo membership across the UK by making the UK “fall in love with judo”, and to increase retention by creating shared experiences.
The foundations of the campaign centred around the creation of three high-quality videos showcasing how the sport has helped to shape their lives, how the values of judo have impacted their social life and encouraging the community to “embrace” the sport.
We will shortly be launching a club marketing portal for clubs that will allow them to create and download their own personalised collateral ahead of the Olympic Games.

GB Juniors Light up Birmingham
British Judo proudly staged the second Birmingham Junior European Cup on the weekend of 15-16 June at the home of the British Judo Association Day one saw our British judoka claim six medals to beat the overall total claimed in 2023 (four)
GB Judo dominated the -73kg category with three of the four semi-final spots occupied by British judoka. Luke Davies overcame Ben Levy to set up an all GB final against Irakli Goginashvili.
In what was the most anticipated contest of the day, Davies emerged victorious in the closing seconds of the contest. In the bronze medal contest, Levy secured bronze to secure three medals for GB Judo.
Also on the opening day, Lewis Fryer equalled his 2023 result in claiming silver, but this year in his new weight category, -66kg, having taken -60kg silver in 2023
Holly Devall and Harriet McRae both won bronze medals in the -70kg and +78kg respectively.
On day two, Summer Shaw and Daniel Ede both claimed silver medals in the lightest and heaviest weight categories, the -48kg and +100kg respectively. For Ede it was an upgrade on the bronze medal he won in 2023. Adding to the GB Judo medal tally was Charlotte Jenman Jenman claimed gold in 2023 in the -52kg category but has stepped up to the -57kg category in 2024. Having progressed to the Repechage, Jenman overcame fellow Brits, Sarah Smith, Maddie Birri and Chloe Link to secure her place on the podium in bronze medal position
Over the weekend GB Judo claimed nine medals in total, with six 5th place finishes and seven 7th place finishes.
Following the competition, British Judo staged a three-day training camp that was attended by the competitors in addition to members of the GB Judo World Class Performance Programme.
COLOUREDJUDOGIATLEVEL1COMPETITIONS
In May the Judo Commission approved the proposal submitted by the BJA Diversity & Inclusion Steering Group
to allow judoka to wear either blue or white judogi at level 1 competitions and to allow them to fight in any combination. E.g. Blue vs. Blue, Blue vs White, White vs. Blue.
The Judo Commission feels there is an opportunity to widen this further to allow any colour judogi at this level, which we will continue to explore.
This supports the BJA commitment to safe, inclusive & accessible Judo.

Revealing the Secrets
In May, British Judo launched an initiative titled "Revealing the Secrets of Judo" to capture the attention of the non-judo community to share the broader benefits of judo beyond its sporting aspects The event emphasised judo's core values and philosophies established by Jigoro Kano, aiming to demonstrate how these can address community challenges and enhance engagement in physical activity
Karen Roberts, British Judo Development Director, and the wider BJA Development Team presented four key programs: Judo in Schools: Promoting judo as an alternative physical activity to improve behaviour, concentration, and physical literacy in schools
Finding Your Feet: Uses ukemi (breakfall) techniques to help people, especially older adults, fall safely and confidently
Adaptive Judo: Extending judo's reach to individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities, fostering an inclusive environment Judo Activators: Training individuals without judo experience, particularly teachers, to deliver judo sessions
The event succeeded in raising awareness of judo's educational and societal benefits, beyond its Olympic and Paralympic presence
Feedback from attendees highlighted the sport's inclusivity and its potential to positively impact various community groups The initiative aims to continue building on this foundation to integrate judo's educational system more broadly across Great Britain.

The new delivery approach will provide a greater opportunity for England programme fighters, and those aspiring to join the England National Squad, to access a greater number of training and randori sessions to boost their weekly training load in collaboration with their club judo opportunities, further accelerating overall technical and physical development. Through utilising the existing club network across England, a new approach of training opportunities is aiming to increase access to additional training and importantly, Randori which is the fundamental training unit of Performance Judo.
