JANUARY 2024 EDITION As the countdown to the Paris 2024 Olympics begins, the spotlight is shining brightly on British Judo clubs and the legacy they are set to leave on the sport.

WITH ONLY SIX MONTHS TO GO UNTIL THE OLYMPIC FLAME IS LIT IN PARIS, PREPARATION IS WELL AND TRULY UNDERWAY FOR OUR GB JUDO FIGHTERS

British Judo Performance Director Nigel Donohue reflects on his Olympic memories and looks ahead to those aiming to qualify for the Games this Summer.

Giving an overview of the Games qualification process, we learn of the preparation taking place at the Olympic and Paralympic National Training Centre and the goals set for GB Judo.

PATH TO PARIS FAMILIES AND PUPILS GET ACTIVE TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE THE COUNTDOWN TO THE PARIS 2024 OLYMPIC GAMES AND PARALYMPIC GAMES

The countdown event kick-offed with a special demo from British Champions, followed by pupils getting stuck in trying out different Path to Paris activities.

British Judo National Technical and Education Co-ordinator Dermot Heslop led a session on the mat alongside Paralympics GB athlete Beth Munro, providing a into to the basics of judo.

ASSOCIATIONNEWS Speaking about the Championships moving to Warwick, British Judo Senior Events Officer, Jessica Hastings said:

British Championships head to Warwick for 2024

“The British Championships are the highlight of the national calendar and are always a great way to end the calendar year and we’re excited to be hosting this year’s Championships in Warwick.

This will be the first time since the mid-2000s that we have left Sheffield for these events. We are looking to continue building on the event, creating a better experience for all attending.

Utilising the new facilities at Warwick to showcase our sport.”

The British Judo Pre-Cadet, Cadet, Junior and Senior National Championships will be heading to Warwick in 2024. Taking place across the weekends of 7th – 8th December and 14th – 15th December 2024, the University of Warwick, Sport and Wellness Hub will see over 700 judoka take to mat.

The venue in Warwick staged the 2021 IBSA Grand Prix, the final qualification event before the Paralympic Games in Tokyo and it was the training venue for judo, wrestling, rugby 7s and squash during the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

BRITISH JUDO REPRESENTED AT IJF REFEREEING AND COACHING SEMINAR Earlier this month, the IJF staged the Refereeing and Coaching Seminar ahead of the World Tour returning for 2024.

British Judo was represented by referees Lisa Rivers, Stefan Newbury and Mark Waterhouse.

The weekend saw referees, coaches and experts from the IJF meet in Gyor, Hungary, to discuss techniques and tactics so that everyone is aligned ahead of the Olympic season starting in Portugal.

Refereeing rules were at the centre of the discussions and the IJF Referee Commission detailed all the rules which will be applied in the coming months.

The main take away was that there are no changes to refereeing in the lead-up to Paris 2024

and the rules will continue, in line with what was observed in 2023 and since Tokyo 2021. The Commission did however provide clarification on certain areas.

Ushiro sankaku – shimewaza and kansetsuwaza is valid whilst oseakomiwaza is a Hansokumake.

The two day event was supported by a variety of quality video examples that allowed everybody to get up to speed and work together.
