Region 7 warmly invite you to join them at the Cadbury House Hotel for the annual AGM and Social Weekend.

This is a fun-filled weekend and we hope that as many members as possible will be able to join us. The Cadbury Hotel is a venue in Congresbury, North Somerset. **** Renowned with local residents and visiting guests alike, the venue offers much. Located less than 30 minutes from Bristol city centre, Cadbury House has great links to the M5 and Bristol Airport. Although part of the DoubleTree by Hilton brand, the hotel is run independently and staffed by passionate local people.

With low lamb prices throughout the year, commercial lamb producers had a very hard time in 2015. With cash so short and returns well down on the previous year, it was always going to be tough selling tups.

But thankfully Charollais have stood the hard test and by and large faired very well.

A true mark of our commercial success is the main National Sheep Association ram sale at Builth Wells. This is the largest consignment of Charollais to go through the auction ring in the year, so is an accurate reflection of demand.

Prices and clearances were excellent; shearling rams achieved a 94% clearance and an average price of £527 which was just £26 down on 2014.

In the ram lamb ring the clearance was up to a very creditable 87% with an increased average price of £475, up £40 on 2014. Any breed would be highly

delighted with these results.

Around the country the reports have been that Charollais have sold well in local ram fairs, usually topping the trade or certainly on a par with Texel.

It is likely to continue to be difficult trading conditions so we must all make certain that we are producing what the market requires. Only by listening to our customers and in turn to the end consumer will we continue to be a leading force in the terminal sire market.

SHEEP BREEDERS ROUNDTABLE CONFERENCE Some 200 sheep industry representatives attended the Sheep Breeders Round Table, This biennial conference boasts a whole weekend devoted to discussions and presentations over breeding strategies, performance recording and genetic advancement. With a very impressive number of young people attending, the event had a real mood of enthusiasm and optimism.

RAM COMPARE The RamComare project is a twoyear pilot study designed to trial strategies for capturing commercial data on slaughter lambs in the UK sheep industry. It will be similar to central progeny tests that are taking place in Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. Charollais rams are being tested alongside our major competitors on 6 commercial farms in England. At the end of the project in 2017, a ranking of the tested rams, based on commercially important traits, will be generated.

This work will also lead to an across-breed performance analysis; so for the first time we will be able to compare Charollais against other terminal sires.

HEALTH ISSUES

MAEDI VISNA The incidence of maedi visna in sheep flocks is on the increase.

Commercial flocks that had reported cases of thin and breathless ewes to the vets have returned as 25% positive to the disease.

Our message to accredited flocks is do not take any risks with your flock. Do not allow any mixing of your animals with non-accredited stock. A positive result can cause great financial loss and emotional stress on the flock owner.

FOOTVAX VACCINATION The footvax vaccine is without doubt an excellent tool for the management of footrot in our flocks. But do be aware that as the vaccine is oil-based it can result in abcesses around the site of the injection. These can be confused with CLA (caseous lymphadenitis). Think carefully about the timing and site of the vaccination and consult your veterinary surgeon if you are concerned.

RAM FERTILITY To help those flocks who lamb later in the year, we will be extending the Ram Guarantee Period for animals purchased at the Worcester Premier Sale to 4 months, from the sale date. This will give buyers an extra month in which to use and prove the ram’s fertility.

Go to ‘Manage Flock’ then select ‘Survey’. This brings up a list of everything in your flock. Each record then needs a button selected for either Dead, Alive or Sold. When you have finished, select submit. This list can then be of use to you with flock management and selection.

TERRY ROBINSON AWARD

Three regional chairmen are due for election in 2016; Kenton Foster, Andrew Walton and Robert Hopper. Andrew is not eligible for re-election having served two periods of office; Kenton and Robert are both eligible for a further term.

Recipient of the Terry Robinson Award in 2015 was Mr Charles Marwood from the Foulrice Flock inYorkshire. The trophy is presented to the person who has contributed most to the promotion, development and furtherance of the breed during the past years.

PAYMENTS TO THE SOCIETY We are always trying to find ways to keep down our costs to members but at the same time provide you with an excellent service. Not only has Mr Marwood given generously of his time to serve on various committees but has run the largest and highly succesful Foulrice Flock. The flock has been at the very top of the breed since its formation in 1982 and continues to turnout top quality pedigree stock and large numbers of sought after commercial tups.

NSA EVENTS 2015 THE NATIONAL SHEEP ASSOCIATION EVENTS that are held around the country each year are the focus of our promotional activity. They attract large crowds of commercial farmers to the farm venues and give us the perfect opportunity to demonstrate how the Charollais breed can perform for prime lamb producers. This year we showcased mostly commercial ewe breeds with Charollais cross lambs at foot. The highly attractive backdrops to our stand area are designed and erected by the office and this year featured new flags with the slogan “Charollais - A Chop Ahead of the Rest”. At each event we run a ‘Guess the Weight’ competition which not only attracts and keeps visitors on the stand but gives us a very useful list of contacts. Our thanks to all the local breeders who help supply sheep and speak to potential customers.

NSA WELSH SHEEP We had a very busy day on the Charollais stand at Welsh Sheep. Thanks to Meilir Jones who supplied the commercial ewes and Charollais lambs for the stand. They may have been a bit wild but they certainly showed what tremendous lambs our breed can produce from ordinary ewes. The total weight of the three Charollais cross lambs on our stand at Welsh Sheep was 102.5kgs. The 3 lambs were between 8-10 weeks old and out of broken-mouthed crossbred ewes. Many who took part in the competition didn't realise just how heavy these lambs were! Charollais lambs grow fast.

NSA NORTH SHEEP What a brilliant day - the crowds swarmed and the Charollais Stand was a buzz all day long. Thanks to Kenton Foster and David Norman for supplying the superb pens of commercial ewes and lambs - Texel x Lleyn, Mule ewe lambs and Herdwick all with Charollais cross lambs at foot. The competition to judge the combined weight of all 10 lambs on the stand proved popular. The total weight was 284.5 kgs and the winner was Sam Hird. Thanks to all who helped and visited us.

NSA EVENTS 2015 NORTH SHEEP 2015 The Herdwick ewes with Charollais cross lambs created a lot of interest.

SOUTH WEST SHEEP 2015 Host farmers for the South West event were the Quick family; Bill and his sons Paul, Andrew and Mark who manage farms of over 1,050 acres in Devon. The family are renowned for producing top quality pedigree stock, including the Loosebeare Flock of 100 pedigree Charollais ewes.

The cover of the Event Guide for the day featured a group of Charollais shearling tups walking away, showing their great backends. On our stand Paul Quick selected two pens of great sheep to show visitors; a wonderful pedigree ewe with her outstanding ram lamb and a Suffolk/Mule ewe with a pair of stonking meat lambs. The farms run a flock of 1,200 Suffolk/Mule ewes, half of which are tupped by the Charollais.

The stand was busy all day with a record attendance for this biennial event.

FEMALE SALE REPORTS 2015 runner-up sold for 500gns to N&ML Breese, of Caernarfon, near Gwynedd in Wales.

ABERKINSEY DISPERSAL 25TH OCTOBER 2015 Ruthin Auction Mart was packed to the rafters on Sunday for the dispersal sale for Mr Meilir Jones of his Aberkinsey Flock of Charollais sheep. Recent winner of ‘Farmers Weekly Beef Farmer of the Year’, Mr Jones was reluctantly selling his flock to focus on the challenges and commitments of his fattening cattle enterprise.

Glyn Coch Mr T sold for 7,000 gns at Aberkinsey Dispersal Sale out of a Glyn Coch Habana ewe and was purchased by the Aberkinsey Flock at the 2012 Worcester Premier Sale for 4,400 gns.

Star of the female section was an outstanding 4 year-old ewe who had a number of high quality daughters and grand-daughters in the sale. Bruce Irvine from the Sauchentree Flock in Aberdeenshire was determined to have this ewe and went to 3,700 gns, sharing the purchase with another Aberdeenshire flockmaster, Lewis Anderson from Banchory. Her sire was Bachymbyd Jack Daniels purchased at the Builth Wells Ram Sale in 2010 for 2,000 gns and her dam went back to Southam Easy Rider.

A wonderful display of well-grown and shapely ewe lambs was topped by a bid of 1,200 gns from Robert Whittaker, Hundalee Flock in Jedburgh, Scottish Borders. A triplet by Aberkinsey Officer, her dam went back to a ewe sold at the Penhros Dispersal sale for 4,000 gns.

Buyers from all over the UK were present to add these excellent Charollais genetics to their flocks and one group of 6 ewes had the longest journey to their new home having been purchased by Mr M A V Copland from the Isle of Orkney.

Berry Brothers sold to a top of 1,700gns, this tremendous full French bred ewe sired by Banville Masterclass going South to Donegal. The Banville pen averaging 586gns for ten sold.

The Tullyear Flock of Drew and Stephen Cowan sold their top at 1,400gns, this great muscled ewe sired by Lisfuncheon Limited Edition selling to Mr John Walsh, County Donegal. Also going South this time to County Cavan was another Limited Edition daughter from the Tullyear pen this lot selling to David Argue for 1,100gns. The Tullyear pen averaging 585gns for 20 sold.

Alan Garland, County Cavan had to dig deep for his choice from the Bunderg Flock of Robert and Gary Scott, this big strong Rhaeadr Magic sired ewe selling for 1,000gns. The Bunderg Flock averaging 520gns for 12 sold.

Also selling to 1000gns was a great bodied Loanhead Northern Star daughter presented by David Mawhinney Carrying twins to Logie Durno Lotus this lot sold to the Duncan Family,Crumlin. The Rockvilla Flock averaging 579gns for 20 sold.

Ewe Lambs sold to a top of 650gns this smart eyecatching lamb presented by Jason Booth going South. Sired by Tullyear Ironside and out of a homebred ewe this April born lamb caught the eye of Mr Michael Brolly, County Donegal.

James McHugh sold his top ewe lamb to Martin McCracken, Banbridge, this well muscled lamb sired by Tullyear Marvel selling for 520gns.

WORCESTER SAUCY SALE - 3RD OCTOBER Charollais in-lamb ewes sold to a top of 1,450 gns at the Worcester Saucy Sale for a shearling ewe from the Dalby Flock of Mr Charles Sercombe from near Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.

The Dalby Kracked-it daughter was carrying twins to top performance and show tup Micklehills Odyssey. Her buyer was Mr J Hanson from Longford, near Coventry, who was starting his Charollais flock and bought a total of 16 lots on the day.

The Ingram family from Aberdeenshire presented their usual powerful run of sheep, which was topped at 1,350 gns for a massive two-shear ewe which had been part of their show team this year. She was in lamb to the Worcester Premier Sale champion shearling ram, Rhaeadr Orlando and was knocked down to G & E Price from Aberystwyth.

FEMALE SALE REPORTS 2015 The Ingrams sold the top-priced ewe lamb at 1,250 gns. This very smart January born lamb was sired by Wernfawr OMG out of their best female show line in the flock. Her buyer on the phone was Shamrock Sheepdogs from Cumnock in Ayrshire. The Loanhead flock sold further ewe lambs for 1,100 gns and 980 gns.

A ewe lamb from the Edstaston Flock of Mr Robert Gregory in Shropshire sold for 1,100 gns to Mr Robert Towers from Lancaster.

Her sire was the interbreed winning shearling ram, Arbryn Olazabal and her dam a high index ewe, who has had progeny to 3,000 gns.

Society Chairman, Mr David Mawhinney brought over a consignment of shearlings from Northern Ireland and was rewarded with a top price of 1,100 gns for his Honddu Investigator daughter out of a full sister to Rockvilla Golden Promise. Taking her across the water to Holland was Mr Harry de Vliegher.

This was a Loanhead Liberator daughter out of a Penrhos Ibanez ewe. Messrs Craig also purchased another Liberator ewe, this time at 1,020 gns, out of the renowned show ewe Elmwick Kit Kat. Both these ewes were carrying to Shamrock Northern Star. The Arjane Flock also sold shearling ewes to 950 gns for a high-index, Elmwick Mr McGregor daughter.

Buyer for this one was Mr Cyril Dougherty from Malton, North Yorkshire.

Top-price for the Elmwick consignment of yearling ewes was 800 gns for an Elmwick Mastercard ewe which had a successful show career as a lamb.

This also went across the water to Northern Ireland, this time to Mr B Bingham.

RABI SUPPORTED BY CHAROLLAIS SOCIETY The Eastern Region of the Society ran a raffle throughout the year to raise funds for the AGM but also to make a donation to RABI. Great credit must go to Carol Watson who tirelessly sold tickets to anyone and everyone she and Geoff met during the show season. The result was that we were able to donate ÂŁ700 to the charity.

At the Annual Dinner Carol presented a cheque to Lady Ava Paice who is a major force for the work of RABI in Cambridgeshire. We were delighted that Jim and Ava Paice were able to join us at our dinner held at the Bedford Lodge Hotel in Newmarket.

PREMIER SALE REPORTS 2015 Reserve Champion went to the winner of the late December ram lamb class, John Graham’s Riverview Flock, this lot selling for 520gns. First in the January Class was a smart Rhaeadr Norman son presented by the Carnew Flock of Jonathan Aiken this lot selling for 660gns. Taking 1st in the shearling ram class and also the top price of the day was a tremendous shearling ram from the Tullyear pen, sired by a homebred ram.

This lot sold to a Rathfriland buyer for 2,400gns.

Female Champion was won by Ronnie Scott and sons with a smart Ashtonelle Kamalot sired ewe lamb out of a Dougherty dam, this lot selling for 550gns.

J Thompson and Sons Animal feeds sponsored Group of Three was won by Drew and Stephen Cowan.

Leelaw Pure Dead Brilliant (its Glasgow slang meaning exceptionally good) was from Russell Gray, Langside Farm, Kirkfieldbank, Lanarkshire. Earlier in the season the ram lamb had triumphed at the Royal Highland Show. Putting him in the championship spot and also paying 2,200 gns was Andrew Walton from Backford in Cheshire.

2015 WEEKEND IN NEWMARKET HEADING SHEEP, HORSES, FUN AND ENTERTAINMENT This was an AGM weekend to remember for the sheer variety of entertainment, fascinating tours and just plain old good fun! For many it was a first visit to the town of Newmarket and a morning stroll to see the 1,000s of horse on the gallops amazed many.

We were so lucky to have been invited for a visit to Darley Stud and Farm. Dan Phipps started the day with a walk around the sheep; we saw some outstanding stock and top grassland management.

We quizzed him on his choice of terminal sires for the mule flock, which included some Charollais cross Beltex tups. Following a delicious lunch in the main Darley offices we then moved on to see the really important inhabitants at Darley, the top class thoroughbred horses. All the stallions were paraded for us individually with a history of their breeding and details of their service fees! We walked along the pristine roads, past a field of wonderful NCM ewe lambs at which point mares and foals appeared all with handlers. What an absolute treat it was.

After the AGM the Friday night entertainment followed the equine theme - a race night, but we had to design our colours and then compete on space hoppers. The teams were ‘handicapped’ following a quiz and the whole evening descended into mayhem and laughter. Eventual winners were Jamie Wild, Lenny Stamper and Louise Brewer. Following trips to a number of local places of interest; Ely Cathedral, Duxford War Museum, Cambridge we gathered together in the gardens of the hotel for a reception before the Annual Dinner.

The quality of service and catering at the hotel was first class. After such a delicious meal we wondered how it could all get better - but it did. Lydia Slack made us laugh with her tales of her childhood on a Derbyshire farm. The Eastern Region are known for enjoying a good boogie, so we could not disappoint with any old music to round off the evening. The 7 piece live-band were fantastic and had everyone on the dance floor.

This year saw the exciting new launch of National Young Stars, a new event for the livestock sector with a view to showcase the industry’s future talent. The event is run by the Young Stars Committee in association with the Three Counties Agricultural Society and is held at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern.

In 2016, the event shall take place on the 24th March and will feature more than 150 young enthusiasts (aged 8-24 years old) competing in beef, dairy, sheep, pig, butcher and auctioneer sections which will include a variety of competitive tasks.

The event will also host a number of trade stands alongside an educational area to showcase what their businesses have to offer the younger generation in terms of intern positions, graduate roles and long-term career options.

We would like at least one team from Charollais to compete at the National Young Stars event 2016. it will be a great opportunity to promote our breed and good fun for competitors.

Teams competing will be judged on their team work, stock judging, handling and presentation skills, as well as their team work and knowledge of the industry.

REGION 1 - NORTH OF SCOTLAND HEADING NSA HIGHLAND SHEEP The North of Scotland region were out in force for the NSA Highland Sheep event which was held way up the country at Fearn Farm, Tain, Easter Ross on the Dornoch Firth. Host farmer, John Scott, who farms with his wife, Fiona, and parents, James and Janet, is widely recognised as one of the most progressive and innovative sheep farmers in Scotland and this was recognised last year when he was named Farmers Weekly UK Sheep Farmer of the Year.

The venue certainly attracted the visitors with fascinating farm trips to see some of the 4,200 commercial and pedigree ewes on the farm. The grassland management was all explained in detail.

Our Charollais stand was equally busy. Bruce Irvine had supplied three pens of excellent commercial ewes with young Charollais lambs at foot. There was a Texel cross ewe, a Blackface x Highlander and a Lleyn gimmer all with tremendous lambs at foot. All had length, width of loin and showed the rapid growth achievable with our tups.

The team of breeders from Region 1 put in a fantastic stint on the stand, getting visitors to “Guess the Weight” of a couple of lambs and engaging them in a chat about our breed. No one got past Sheena Coghill or her daughter to visit the neighbouring stand!

“I was really encouraged by the number of farmers in the area who are using Charollais with excellent results. The North of Scotland is not our most popular region of the UK but the response we had on the day gave me confidence that the Charollais does have an important role for flocks in this environment” said Jonathan Barber. The key factors that attracted farmers to using Charollais was ease of lambing, quick growth, length of loin, weight achievable and good killing out %.

YOUNG BREEDERS SUCCESS Congratulations to our two young breeders, Eilidh and Erin Duncan who had such a successful show season in the North of Scotland. They won the Interbreed Titles at Keith, Echt and Black Isle Shows.

HEADING2 - SOUTH OF SCOTLAND REGION Interbreed Award.

The South of Scotland Charollais members in the South of Scotland have taken the show scene by storm over the summer.

Our show season started off back at the beginning of May with Ayr Show. A large turnout of sheep was lead by Jim Kennedy's Ewe Lamb which then went on to lift the Reserve Interbreed Award, also lifting an Interbreed Award was Alan Kennedy who won the Interbreed Group of 3.

Next on the Calendar was Lesmahagow where Russell Gray won the Championship and then lifted the Reserve Interbreed Award. The following week Cumberland Show saw a large entry from South of Scotland and North England. Ben Radley won with a Gimmer that then lifted the

Next stop was the Highland Show where the Region was very well represented with 8 of our members showing. Russell Gray had an amazing show winning the Shearling Ram, Ram Lamb, Ewe and Gimmer Classes and also the Groups of 3. His Shearling Ram, Oakchurch Ozil lifted the Championship with his Ewe Reserve, but this was only the beginning as he also lifted the Interbreed Sheep Award which this year was combined with the prestigious Queens Cup. The next day he also won the Interbreed Pairs.

Ben Radley's show successes also continued as the summer went on, he made the long trip down to the Royal Welsh where his Gimmer stood 2nd in a very strong and large class. Russell Gray lifted the

Breed Championship at Biggar Show. The last show of the season was Dumfries, where Ben's Gimmer fresh from its success in Wales lifted the Championship and the Sheep Interbreed. Well done to everyone and thank you for supporting the Charollais Classes.

The Region also held a stockjudging by kind permission of Ben Radley. Jim Kennedy was our Judge who had the tough job of placing 5 classes of excellent stock. A good turnout of members and friends enjoyed the hospitality and the hog roast supplied by James Clanachan.

Last on our Calendar was the Flock Competition. Charles and Valerie Marwood kindly took the time and spent 2 days judging our flocks, results as follows:

HEADING4 - EAST OF ENGLAND REGION Regional BBQ In early August the region met up at Tom and Ruth Mawer’s Kelby Flock for the Annual BBQ. This was very well attended, and it was very nice to welcome new members. At the short meeting before the BBQ Carol Watson, the newly elected chairman of the region, spoke about what she hopes to achieve in her term of office. The region also elected Tom Mawer as Vice Chairman.

After the BBQ everybody had the chance to look at the Kelby Flock and Charles Sercombe went over the points to look for in Charollais, for new members.

In early October the Eastern Region Flock Competition was judged by Mr Cecil Thomas. Once again the judge had to cover a large area of the country, as there were entries from Kent, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Buckinghamshire and Lincolnshire.

Champion Flock in the Eastern Region was the Kelby Flock. Mr Tom Mawer receives the award from the judge, Mr Cecil Thomas.

The annual dinner was held at The Falcon Hotel Uppingham, and was very well attended. The result of the Flock competition are on the next page.

Finally we had a regional meeting at the Greetham Valley Golf Complex at the end of October. Future events: Regional AGM will be held in conjunction with a livestock establishment. Details to be confirmed. We are also holding a farm walk and BBQ hosted by Mr Elliott, in the summer of 2016.

We are also trying to arrange a social event with other breed societies in our region.

Central Region AGM, Trimming Day and Flock visit of the Wedderburn Flock - The day commenced with a trimming demonstration as breeders from far and wide gathered to witness Jennifer Curtis turn an ordinary ewe lamb into a prize winner. She was then on hand and ably assisted by another master trimmer – Barbara Fewster, to help and guide members on the art of preparing sheep for shows and sales. Lots of tips were readily exchanged by members keen to learn as the ewe lambs were transformed by lunch time.

Following lunch, members and local farmers were able to inspect the Wedderburn flock – consisting of approximately 200 ewes

that are split into early and late lambing flocks with the aim to lamb about 50 ewes in December and the rest in February/March.

Welsh Region Trimming Day - At the end of May the Region were delighted to conduct a trimming day in conjunction with the Central region, kindly hosted by Jonathan and Janet Corbett, Wedderburn Flock. Several members made the trip across the Severn bridge and enjoyed the trimming tutoring provided by expert trimmer Jennifer Curtis, Elmwick flock, with many members trying out their skills on one of the Wedderburn ewe lambs. This was followed by a splendid lunch. Many thanks to Jennifer Curtis for her tuition and to Jonathan and Janet for their superb hospitality.

W

e’ve had a fairly good year, not a lot of sun but lots of grass and not too much rain.

Lambs have grown well. Unfortunately the price for lamb dropped badly after Easter and never really recovered affecting the price paid for tups.

In June our AGM was hosted by John and Michelle Osborne. Thick fog meant a slow start to the day but this cleared in the afternoon, so after an ample lunch we viewed John’s Charollais flock and The one that got away ..... his dairy herd plus new parlour setup. Very impressive on all counts sheep, dairy setup and above all lunch.

NSA South West was hosted by EW Quick & Sons who put excellent examples of the breed and it’s crosses on the stand. Many thanks to them and all who helped on the stand during the day.

Congratulations to William Hopper (pictured left) after plucking up the courage to enter the Kivells “Gift of the Gavel” Competition. He auctioned a dummy sheep on the day taking joint first place. At the age of 10 years he’s one to look for in the future!

The four South West County shows were well attended with the Charollais performing well in the interbreed competitions as always. Notably winning Interbreed Ram Lamb competitions at both Devon County (Oakdene) and Royal Cornwall (Brandywells), Interbreed Group at Devon(Gogwell) and Supreme Champion at Dorset (Brandywells). We definitely could do with more competitors for the small local shows where a Charollais will always stand well against other breeds.

Exeter NSA Sale - In August a quality entry of Charollais rams sold as expected to a slightly easier trade for all. Shearling rams topped at £787.50 for Gerald Burrough with others at £756, £735 to average £719 of all six sold. First Prize Shearling came from Robert Hopper and realised £651. EW Quick & Sons had a strong run of 9 Shearlings that sold to £735, £714 (x3) to average £642. A & R Wrayford sold their best to £735 and all 39 Shearling Rams sold averaging a pleasing £533.

Lambs were headed by the Overall Champion, from Carol Irwin’s Brandywells flock, sired by Kings Land Megastar this stylish & powerful lamb sold over the phone at £840 to its new home in Dyfed, Wales with PA Thomas. Other Lambs from the same run sold to £651 & £577.50 to average £547 of all eight sold.

Reserve Champion rosette went to Robert Hopper’s ram lamb that sold for £577.50, with DJ Barker & Family’s making £525 and Gerald Burrough’s best at £504. All 46 Ram Lambs sold averaging £380.

Charollais females were very keenly bid for peaking at £472.50 for a tight skinned shearling from EW Quick & Sons and £420 for an older ewe from A & R Wrayford.

Many thanks to Jenny Curtis and Jonathan Corbett who shared the judging and Russell Steer for selling and stewarding - a highly efficient job was done by all.

Flock Competition - In September David and Liz Mawinney travelled from Northern Ireland to judge our flock competition. They fitted in thirteen flocks in the three days in a very tight schedule but still had plenty of time to chat to all about their flocks and bloodlines. Many thanks to them both and to Patrick Tully and Pauline Hopper who acted as very competent drivers. Full results are on the following page.

Carol and Terry Irwin invited all members for refreshments and to see their South West Champion flock in October and hosted a meeting despite the chill east wind that howled through their sheep shed. During the meeting the many children went on a treasure hunt around the fields ably assisted by Lydia Hopper.

Amelia (Pedrick) and Ben Watts were married on 19th September. They had a fantastic day for the wedding which took place on Dartmoor, followed by an evening of barn dancing back

NEWS FROM REGION HEADING 7 at Churchill Farm in a much transformed lambing shed (carpets / flowers / bar / fairy lights) - the sheep are looking forward to lambing this year! They met in 2010 when Ben purchased some foundation ewes for his newly formed Willow flock from the Churchill flock. We wish Amelia and Ben all the best in the future with the Willow flock of Charollais.

Amy Pedrick ably ran a silent auction and raised £971.00 towards funding the AGM. The date for the AGM, hosted by SW region, to put in your diaries is 28th to the 29th April (see inside front cover for more details).

Now, as the winter is closing in on us, we are all looking forward to seeing our new lamb crop.....
