Introduction Welcome to the 21st annual joint production sale of in-lamb Charollais ewes and ewe lambs. The flocks participating in the sale carry some of the best Charollais genetics in the UK and all with the potential to breed you something really special for both the show and sale ring. Marketing sheep this year has not been without its problems and a drastically reduced show circuit has not helped as the show ring is a very valuable shop window. The buoyant commercial trade has certainly helped ease some of the problems and put a confidence in the market place not seen for quite a few years. All ewes forward will be scanned by an independent scanner in Worcester market on the morning of the sale and will undergo an inspection for confirmation of health, soundness of teeth, feet and udders. There will be no direct movement from the sale to Ireland this year but there will be an on-line bidding facility available and all vendors will do everything possible to help purchasers from afar with looking after sheep until they can travel onwards to their destination. All sheep will be available to view on farm by prior arrangement and telephone bids can be arranged if preferred to the on-line system. General Information The Sale will commence at 1.00 pm. The sale is held under the auspices of the British Charollais Sheep Society and all sheep will be sold subject to the Rules and Conditions of the Society. Copies are available from the Society or Auctioneers and will be displayed at the sale. All sheep will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order. All sheep to be sold singly. LICENSES Vendors are responsible for completing their Standard Movement Documents prior to the sale. The Market Holding Number is 17 521 8000-01 HEALTH The sheep are from Maedi Visna Accredited flocks registered with the SAC Sheep & Goat Health Scheme. All flocks have Scrapie Monitored Status or are tested ARR/ARR genotype. SCANNING RESULTS All ewes will be scanned with results available on the day of the sale or printed in the catalogue. This in no way guarantees the number of lambs at birth. If any female sheep which is described in the catalogue or at the time of sale as being “scanned in lamb” or “in lamb” proves not to have been in lamb at the time of sale and within 7 days after the day of sale the Purchaser gives written notice to the auctioneers of his intention to return the animal supported by a veterinary surgeon’s certificate that such sheep has proved not to have been in lamb then the purchaser may return such sheep to the vendor. Ewe lambs are sold as empty. PEDIGREE CERTIFICATES & SCRAPE GENOTYPE CERTIFICATES Pedigree Certificates will be available at the Auction Mart Office on the day of the sale together with certificates of Scrapie Genotype for all sheep that have been tested. This year we are offering for sale at the Saucy Sale 2 embryo yearling ewes and 4 ewe lambs. They all come from some of our best blood lines and we are sure they will go on and perform for their new owners in both show and sale rings. These sheep have had no hard feed since they were 5 months of age except for a little prior to the sale during preparation. Our show successes have been limited to overseas for the last two years due to a lack of shows, but what a success it was in Mexico. An embryo daughter of Edstaston Oceania (14TG00340) by Knockin Shockin won the female championship at the National Charollais show in Mexico and then went on to win Supreme Interbreed female in the show. They are all on the Heptavac P+ system and have had Clik extra. The yearlings have also been vaccinated against Enzootic and Toxoplasmosis abortion. Best of luck to all prospective purchasers. We can recommend these sheep to go on and thrive under a variety of management systems.
EDSTASTON RAMS: KNOCKCROGHERY VALD’ISERE : H19-20-047 - ARR/ARR Purchased from Declan Miley at the Southern Irish Premier Sale in 2020 for 4,400 EUROS. Used on a very few ewes due to him not arriving at his new home until very late in the season his lambs are showing tremendous promise. They are very tight skinned with phenomenal shape and very correct legs and feet. 8
KNOCKIN SHOCKIN 17XXJ00376 ARR/ARR INDEX 321 Purchased for the record price of 25,000gns. Shockin needs no introduction having produced progeny that have excelled in both sale and show rings. He now has sons that are producing the goods with several grandsons realising four figures at sales to a top of 5,600 gns for Edstaston Tempranillo. Coupled with this is the performance data with Shockin’s Terminal Sire Index currently being 321 which places him comfortably in the top 1% for the breed. Edstaston Vienna a top 1% daughter sold at last year’s Saucy for 2,000gns.

HILLSIDE TENNYSON 18VBK00237 ARR/ARR INDEX 225 Purchased at Dungannon 2018 for 2,600gns from the Hillside flock of Alistair Moore. Tennyson was bought for his style, skin and confirmation while very correct on his legs and feet. It is very pleasing to see his lambs are fulfilling all of these traits.

He has grown into a huge ram and his daughters are breeding well - producing lambs such as Knockin Wagamama selling for 6,000gns at 2021 premier sale (see cover photo) Knockin Undercover Brother: 19XXJ00695 ARR/ARR - INDEX 240 Knockin Ultimatum: 19XXJ00679 - ARR/ARR INDEX 297 Undercover Brother caught my eye from a very young age, with fantastic presence, skin and carcass, always the stylish standout lamb and I made the decision to keep and use him after on farm scanning. Ultimatum has a fantastic strong real ram’s head that I couldn’t part with, not as pink as Undercover, so he should work well with Ruben, I have some very stylish march lambs born by him. Ffrwd Wingman: 21YET02460 ARR/ARR - INDEX 228 Purchased privately from Dewi Evans this year for his great skin and cracking presence. He was the most eyecatching lamb in the bunch. Wingman is very correct and has a fantastic head with “those ears”.
Bronwydd Wild Thing: 21WAJ00815 ARR/ARR Purchased from this year’s Worcester premier sale for 2,400gns, I fell for his spark and presence, look at that head, he is a tremendous handling lamb, very correct with skin and backend. Sired by the 3,200gns Wernfawr Vinnie. 13

Founded in 1987 the Wolston flock has always put great importance on good families, correctness and ease of management. Always an exceptional lamb with the longest body in the group and a tremendous shoulder and correctness. Dam is the most influential live Charollais ewe at Logie Durno, with more consistency in her progeny and grand progeny than any other. Sire was Foxhill Va Va Voom Purchased for 16,000gns who has sired sons up to 10,000gns.

These we find are the attributes that the commercial lamb producer is seeking and our rams sell easily.

His sire is Oakchurch Reuben and his dam by Rainbow Lindisfarne – both rams that throw exceptional fleshing on the loin and backend. He has surpassed our hopes, always fertile and giving us the easiest fleshing Charollais we have ever bred. He is super correct, with a lovely character and performance figures in the top 5%.

CROGHAM TITUS – 18AB01456 ARR/ARR This powerful, good looking tup was sired by Foulrice Rachamin out of an Edstaston ewe, top price at the Wedderburn Dispersal Sale. A shearling ram by him was Reserve Champion Shearling Ram at Worcester this year and sold for 1,400 gns to Ffrwd and Bachymbyd Flocks. Titus was sold to Russia in 2020. His daughters have his growth and great backends.

DALBY SUPER TROOPER – 17PE05884 ARR/ARR Super Trooper was purchased for 3,500 gns as a lamb. He has produced some exceptional stock; big growthy ewes that are both prolific and milky. His performance figures are outstanding; he was used in the RamCompare project and has the highest ranking for Charollais for scan weight and muscle depth EBVs. His terminal sire index is 366, top 1%.
HYDE WISDEN – 21SU00971 - ARR/ARR This ram lamb is sired by Dalby Super Trooper out of Foulrice Tootsie. The dam is shared by Charles Sercombe and Stuart Dunkley and progeny from this very highly muscled ewe sold at the Dalby Celebration Sale this year for 1,500gns and 1,300gns, Wisden was a January born lamb and he caught our eye for his correctness, tight skin and amazing figures. His muscle EBV is 3.42 (top 1%) and his scan weight EBV is 7.70 (top 5%) which is a pretty rare combination. We are looking forward to his progeny.

Tremendous skin and carcase and to top it off he is incredibly correct and stylish. The dam was clipped out for showing this year and her sister was 1st prize ewe lamb and Reserve female champion at the Royal Welsh.
Robleston Warrior: 21WGN5368 A half share purchased with Paul Curran privately from Gareth Jones. He is a son of Arbryn Tonto, who was 1st Prize shearling ram at the Royal Welsh 2019. He is a maternal brother to Arbryn One and Only, Champion at the Royal Welsh in 2016 and is the sire of Arbryn Viper a stock ram at Logie Durno that’s breeding extremely well.

I am delighted to have been invited to offer for sale this year 5 yearling ewes from the most consistent families in the flock. Since the Dalby reduction sale earlier in the year, the number of Micklehills ewes on the farm has become more visible (less for them to hide amongst)! As much as I’d like to keep them all for different reasons, the growth in my numbers needs to be curtailed (according to dad). That said, I continue to only retain in the flock those females I feel have robust type, with above average performance figures that will allow them to excel in any environment. All 5 offered for sale are in the top 25% for terminal sire index. With the exception of 20ZWA08951, these sheep were out-wintered and are sold in natural condition, allowing them to go on and perform in their new homes. They are all on the Heptavac P+ system and have been vaccinated against Enzootic, Toxoplasmosis and Camphlyla bacta abortion. They have been wormed regularly, treated with Clik Extra and were given an Animax Bolus prior to tupping. I look forward to seeing you on the 2nd.

SERVICE SIRE Dalby Van Tam: 20PE08770 - ARR/ARR A twin reared embryo by Edstaston Tulloch out of Dalby Olive. He scanned with a 43.5mm eye muscle, which was one of the main reasons he was retained and lightly used last year. His lambs have excellent skins and fleshing. He has grown into a much admired shearling, who stood 2nd (to the Interbreed Champion) at Great Yorkshire Show 2021. His full sisters sold for up to 1,900gns at the Dalby Coral Celebration Sale 2021. 21
Dalby Wappy Chappy: 21PE09567 This year’s retained ram lamb at Dalby and Micklehills, being kept for his super correct type and outstanding performance! By Dalby Super Trooper out of the brood ewe extraordinaire Dalby Rhapsody, who is the dam of the 12,500 gns female breed record holder Dalby Tutti Frutti. His on farm performance at ultrasound gives him a top 1% EBV for scan weight and top 1% overall index. Over the years we have evolved into an extremely prestigious flock with many champions being produced and also some great sale toppers. The last two years premier sales have been led by Foxhill with the top prices of 16,000gns (below left) and 17,000gns (below right).

What a year 2021 has been for both the Logie Durno and Loanhead flocks. First bit of excitement came in the form of Logie Durno Winston being sold for £10,000 to Stuart Ramsay and Jim Neil in a private deal back in May. We had great success in the show ring at the first ever Royal Highland Show showcase event. Winning Charollais champion (pictured below left) with a homebred Talisman daughter. After that she went on to win the interbreed MV accredited champion and teamed up with Foxhill Va va voom to win the interbreed pairs title. The premier sale at Worcester also was a great few days with many highlights. At the pre sale show we were awarded both Champion and reserve. Then in the sale ring we sold lambs to 10,000gns (pictured below right), 8,500gns and 3,800gns as well as securing the top price charollais of this year Foxhill Walkabout for 17,000gns. The six lambs that will be travelling down from Aberdeenshire to this year’s Saucy sale have been hand picked to offer a range of breeding to attendees of the sale. Every year we aim to secure the best of Charollais breeding to offer ever better females for both old and new breeders to add to their flocks.
