REPORT ON EUROTIER EXHIBITION, HANNOVER, GERMANY NOVEMBER 2014 BY JONATHAN BARBER BACKGROUND Eurotier is the world’s leading trade fair for animal production, it is held on the world’s largest trade fairground in Hannover, Germany. There were in excess of 2,300 exhibitors, spread over 27 halls covering 240, 000 m2 with half of the exhibitors coming from 50 countries outside Germany.

We were based on the British Stand, in Hall 27, which had over 250 stands alone. The British Stand was made up of 19 exhibitors of which six were sheep breeds – Charollais, Texel, Suffolk, Lleyn, Bluefaced Leicester and Hampshire. Live sheep on the stand were 2 shearling rams from Bruce and Gregor Ingram, 2 Suffolk ewe lambs and 1 Texel ram. Eblex supported the transportation of the Charollais and Texel rams from the UK via Mike Adams who helps Eblex with livestock transportation and stands at international events.

The four-day event attracts an attendance of over 160,000 from all over the world. All those would be involved in animal production – cattle, dairy, pigs, poultry and sheep.

BRITISH STAND The Charollais rams certainly were a big draw to the stand.

We congratulate Bruce Ingram on his selection of the rams; they were very well conformed with good long wide backs, great shaped gigots, hardy looking with white hair covering on their heads. These rams were impressive and we all received highly complementary remarks all the time on the quality of the sheep from visitors, who were not only from Germany.

INTERESTED VISITORS Over the 4 days we received over 440 expressions of interest and over 50 serious enquiries. We have names, addresses and email contact details for these 50 and we will be following these up with names of breeders who are in a position to export live animals, semen, embryos etc.

The largest demand is for live animals at present, from sheep farmers who wish to either have Charollais for crossing, start a flock or add to their existing flock. As these farmers were impressed by the type and quality of sheep on the stand, that is what they will expect to be offered for purchase, they are not interested in anything that approaches the French type.

WORLD WIDE INTEREST We also experienced demand from the USA, Turkey, Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Iran, Latvia, Kosovo, China, Mongolia, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Netherlands, Belgium, Georgia, Italy, Croatia and Belarus. We spoke to representatives from all these

EUROTIER EXHIBITION countries. Carroll and I were filmed for Turkish Television, where we know there is a huge demand. We also met representatives from Turkey on their stand where we were photographed. The Turkish Sheep and Goat Association has 200,000 members and the organisation employs 500 staff and their mission statement says amongst other elements is to “increase the quality of life of the rural population” alongside breeding high quality sheep.

Many countries do not have import regulations in place for us to export to them yet, so the challenge is on, as it has always been. I believe we find ourselves in a stronger position than in previous years; our scrapie position is much better and we are able to genotype test, which makes a huge difference. We explained that as advisors, they must encourage their vets to look at the demand that exists for Charollais in their countries and the good that can be achieved by importing our genetics.

Without exception all the interested parties were highly impressed with our 5 generation pedigree that we demonstrated on the stand, but especially with the recording work that we undertake in weighing lambs, our ultrasound back fat and muscle scanning and all the EBVs that are associated with our stock.

BREEDERS NEWS SALES 2015 WORCESTER PREMIER SALE - RUNS We will continue with the ruling of a maximum of 5 rams per run, which worked well in 2014. To avoid any confusion over Lot Numbers / Rams, vendors with two runs of rams, will not be able to move sheep from their original Lot Number, even if rams in their 1st run are not forward.

SHOW CLASSES Some classes at the Worcester Premier sale fill the ring to bursting. To help with this problem we will be introducing slightly different categories for 2015.

The early December born class will be judged in 2 sections. The vendor will decide which ram lamb they take into which section.

You will be restricted to entering one ram lamb in each of the 2 sections. Also vendors will be restricted to showing 2 entries in all the other classes.

IN-LAMB EWE SALES The inspection rules for in-lamb ewe sales will be altered. From 2015 all ewes entered for sale must be correct in udder and feet.

We have in our inspection rules allowed these faults to be declared at the time of sale - this will no longer be the case.

Council has introduced this change as the number of females available for sale has increased and the message is clear that buyers want top quality, correct animals.

Also the minimum selling price for ram lambs will be raised to 250 gns for all General Sales.

COST OF PRODUCTION We would urge all breeders to look at the cost of production of their sheep very carefully. Good quality Charollais lambs sell very well for meat in the early part of the year. If you can get £100£120, or more, for lambs in April / May then selling them for low prices at the end of the year, makes no financial sense. The competition in the ram market is high, so as a breed we need to ensure we present commercial farmers with top quality rams.

Second rate animals just do not attract good prices or bids at all.

This applies equally to females, which are often sold as shearlings.

These animals only detract from the overall trade for the breed - so we urge you to be ruthless with your culling policy in 2015.

This would potentially take place at one of the larger sales. Let us know if this would be of interest to you / your children. What would you like to do at such an event? A mixture of practical training and a discussion on the breed? Dependant on demand we will arrange a suitable venue / date.

CONFERENCE We will be holding a conference in 2015 - venue and date TBC. The aim is to find commercial farmers who will let us know what they are looking for with their terminal sires - what they like and don’t like about our breed. This dialogue is very helpful for us all to progress with our breeding policies and make sure we are in touch with our customers.

BREEDERS NEWS REGIONAL ELECTIONS Three regional chairmen are due for election in 2015; Jonathan Aiken, Meilir Jones and Bruce Irvine. Jonathan and Meilir are not eligible for re-election having served two periods of office; Bruce is eligible for a further term.

David Mawhinney will have served two years in May 2015 and is therefore due for election; he is eligible for a further term as National Chairman. This position is selected by the Board/Council.

We decided that our role should be as facilitators to export. We will organise promotion to potential customers, as we did at Eurotier. BANK CHARGES You are all no doubt aware of rising bank charges. The Charollais Society since its inception has enjoyed free banking with Barclays - but this has now come to an end! Barclays have altered their scale of charges to all customers. So that we can save money, we would urge all members to either pay their invoices by Direct Debit or if you are not happy with that process, by internet banking.

All banks are charging more and more to process cheques, at both ends - so please try to change to one of these alternative methods.

If we elect to one alternative payment plan with Barclays electronic payments will be free and cheques charged at £1.50 each.

Payment by cheques is going to cost both members and BCSS more in the future, so we may have to consider an extra charge on those invoices that are paid by cheque - by the end of 2015.

We want to make it as easy as possible for our members to maximise the opportunities in this trade.

We are therefore now going to set up an EXPORT CLUB. Membership of the Export Club is open to all registered breeders who both are able and wish to take part in export.

For those of you who have exported before, you will know that it is vital that all the health regulations are followed carefully, for the country the sheep are going to. There will be different requirements of flock health status for different countries.

The export membership list will be used to circulate to potential customers, across the world.

If you would like to join, then please request an application form. This will ask a few simple questions on flock / farm health status, so that we know which countries you may be eligible to export breeding sheep, semen and embryos to.

TERRY ROBINSON AWARD 2014 Winners of the 2014 Terry Robinson Award were the Ingram Family from Aberdeenshire. The trophy is presented to the person/s who have contributed most to the promotion, development and furtherance of the breed during the past year/s.

The Ingram Family have two flocks of Charollais; William and Carol’s Logie Durno Flock and their sons Gregor and Bruce’s Loanhead Flock. Both have turned out some of the very best examples of Charollais at shows and sales in recent years. They achieved the ultimate accolade of winning all three interbreed titles at the Royal Welsh Show in 2013 and also have had the champion and top-priced rams at our premier sale on more than one occasion.

In order to recoup some of the costs involved in promotion for export, we will be charging members of the club a fee of £50 per annum.

NSA EVENTS 2014 NSA SCOT SHEEP Wednesday 4th June 2014, at the Berwickshire farm of Quixwood, Grantshouse, courtesy of the Macfarlane family. It was probably the wettest day this area of Scotland had ever experienced! It poured all day and our stand was not helped by being in a building with slits in the roof! We did have two excellent pens of sheep provided by Herbie and Marie Kennedy, Parkgate Flock; shearling ewes and shearling rams which certainly pulled the visitors to our stand.

Guess the Weight was busy most of the day with over 160 attempts to accurately assess the weight of the rams.

NSA SOUTH SHEEP Saturday 28th June at Blackcap Farm, Firle, Lewes, East Sussex, by kind permission of Tony Monnington and family. Thanks to local breeder David Morphett who provided a good pen of shearling rams and, along with the stand, we attracted some new customers.

As always a very busy day, with plenty of enquiries.

The winner of the Guess the Weight was Rachel Gilder from Gloucestershire who used her prize voucher to start a pedigree flock.

ROYAL WELSH SHOW Congratulations to Adrian Davies from the Glyn Coch Flock who won the Overall Supreme Interbreed Championship at the show - a terrific achievement. The Gwyndy Flock had a pen of 5 well-fleshed tups on our stand and certainly prompted excellent comments during the week.

JUDGES AND WORKSHOPS

Premier Sale Judges 2015 Worcester - Charles Sercombe Stirling - Andrew Walton Builth Wells - Tom Greenfield NEW JUDGES Two successful training and assessment days were held during 2014 for potential new panel judges.

The first was held at Robert and Jeanette Gregory’s farm at Harmer Hill in Shropshire. Robert is Chairman of the Judges Committee and has very kindly hosted such days for us on more than one occasion. His day in May saw 7 potential judges put through their paces. If the committee consider those taking part are competent and knowledgeable then they recommend to Council that they either join the Full Panel, Intermediate Panel or try again.

The Kennedy family very kindly hosted a Judges Workshop and Training & Assessment day on their farm in Dumfries. A great crowd of existing judges attended to sharpen their skills and discuss important elements of the judging procedure. This was the last of our series of Workshop Days, which have been held over the past four years around the country. No plans are in place to hold a day in 2015, but we are reviewing the workshop format and considering how best we can help our judges with this important task.

We had time to see some potential judges at Parkgate and are pleased to confirm their appointments to the panels, from both venues.

FEMALE SALE REPORTS 2014 FEMALES WITH FIGURES SALE - 22ND JUNE 2014 Empty Charollais ewes from a group of six Signet recorded flocks topped 500 gns twice at Worcester Market. First at this money was a shearling ewe from the Brettles Flock of Mark and Margie Rushbrooke from Bewdley in Worcestershire. The ewe was

by Logie Durno Masterpiece out of a Dalby Inspired home-bred ewe. Buyer of this one and a further 14 lots at the sale was Mr W Marshall from Llandysul, Ceredigion.

The Bould Flock of G Meyrick and Sons from Oxfordshire sold their Logie Durno Klaymore shearling ewe for 500 gns to Mrs Jennifer Norton from Shropshire for her Culmington Flock.

Clive Roads knocked down the Three Counties champion for 2,000 gns and went across the water to Southern Ireland. Sired

by Ballyhibben Killarney out of a Penrhos Ibanez ewe. Her dam sold later in the sale for 1,150 gns to A P James, Ditton Flock.

The Ingram family’s top was 1,000 gns for a very well-bred gimmer out of Dalby Hyacinth by Rockvilla Golden Promise. She was in lamb to Logie Durno Officer, the Interbreed champion ram lamb at the 2014 Royal Welsh Show and was purchased by Mr Horton from Buckinghamshire. Not far behind at 950 gns was another Loanhead gimmer this time by Rutland Humdinger, in lamb to Logie Durno Officer. Mr E J Taylor from Leamington Spa for his Little Dassett flock was her buyer.

A top-quality show ewe lamb from Mr Robert Gregory’s Edstaston Flock near Shrewsbury topped the annual Worcester Saucy Sale of Many new breeders were at Charollais females. The lamb was Worcester Market for the Kings Land Flock dispersal sale for Peter knocked down for 1,700 gns (below) to Mr David Roberts from and James Vaughan from Kenley in Shropshire. The lamb Herefordshire. was sired by the 6,500 gns Dalby Malachite out of a Glyn Coch ewe.

Leading the sale was 3,050 gns for a stock ewe - sired by Southam Exotic out of a Castellau ewe by Galtres Dominator.

Purchased by Ian Spence and Sue Pye from Aberdeenshire, who then purchased her ewe lamb, sired by Bachymbyd Kracker, for the top price of 960 gns (below).

One of the show shearlings, a daughter of Gyffin Knockout sold for 1,500 gns to Janet and Next best was an in-lamb shearling ewe from Mr Adrian Davies from Carmarthen. Her dam was the Supreme Interbreed champion from this year’s Royal Welsh Show and her sire Dudston Monty. She was carrying a single to a home-bred sire, Glyn Coch Night to Remember. Taking this one at 1,500 gns was Mr Justin Evans from the Vale of Glamorgan.

PARKGATE SALE - 10TH OCTOBER 2014 Buyers from all over were at the on-farm sale of top Charollais females from the Parkgate Flock of Alan and Herbie Kennedy, Dumfries. On offer was the majority of their 1 – 3 crop ewes (right), one, sired by Arjane Kukri, topped the sale at 2,100 gns.

Putting in the final bid was Arwyn Thomas from Carmarthenshire to secure her for his Arbryn Flock.

Next was the top-priced shearling ewe at 1,750 gns to N & J Carragher, Northern Ireland. Sired

by Parkgate Kaiser, this ewe was carrying to Ballyhibben O’Driscoll.

The third prize ewe lamb was shown by Cambridgeshire vendor, DC Green, of Sutton, near Ely. By Dalby Lazelle, out of a Rockville Golden Promise-sired ewe, sold for 480 gns to JD & V Towers & Son, of Farleton, Lancashire.

Another Regen ewe lamb also by Dalby Lazelle sold for 480gns.

Colin Bowens’ Gwyndy flock had 520gns for a Millhouse Musician sired shearling sold scanned twins to Gwyndy Kadinsky, whilst Mark Worthington made 480gns from a shearling by Dudston Jasper in lamb to Galtres Lynz Unstoppable.

WORCESTER PREMIER SALE REPORTS 2014 Castellau One in a Million tops Worcester Premier Sale at 4,300 gns Average prices, numbers sold and clearance rates were all up at the Charollais Sheep Premier Sale held at Worcester Market at the beginning of July. Leading the trade at 4,300 gns was a very smart tup lamb from the Castellau Flock of Tim Prichard, Glamorgan.

After fierce bidding from a number of breeders, Norman McMordie from Northern Ireland put in the final nod for this son of Castellau Lord of the Manor.

“This lamb was just what I was searching for, plenty of style, correct with excellent performance figures and pedigree to match his looks” said Mr McMordie.

Enjoying an outstanding sale was Meilir Jones from Trelawynd in Flintshire. His five shearling rams all sired by Glen Coch Mr T out of Bachymbyd Jack Daniels bred ewes, averaged £2,961.

Aberkinsey Number 1 sold for 4,200 gns to S & S Murray from Pattingham, Nr Wolverhampton for their Shipley Flock.

Next at 4,000 gns was Aberkinsey Nuclear Power which was knocked down to Matthew Rees from Ceredigion. The next two sold for 2,600 gns to A J Snaith, Northumberland and 2,300 gns to E J Taylor from Warwickshire.

Outlaw was sired by Logie Durno Laird out of Riverdale Iris and was purchased for 3,200 gns by Dewi Evans from Anglesey for his Ffrwd Flock.

Going back to the Northern Irish flock of R Scott at 3,100 gns was Loanhead One and Only a very muscular tup by Riverdale Noble out of a Logie Durno Jackpot ewe.

An embryo lamb out of the 2012 RWAS Champion of Champions Logie Durno Kate by Loanhead Midas Touch sold to Mr and Mrs Mark Rushbrooke and Mr and Mrs Tony Gregory for 2,600 gns. Tim Prichard from the Castellau flock took a further Loanhead lamb at 2,200 gns. A shearling ram, Loanhead Nimrod this time by Rutland Humdinger from the same flock sold for 3,200 gns to Mr T C Phillips from Brecon.

The Logie Durno flock which is owned by Gregor and Bruce’s parents, William and Carole enjoyed their best trade with their pen of lambs. Topping their trade at 3,100 gns was Logie Durno Obama, the winner of the Signet Performance ram lamb class.

Sired by Crogham Lambert out of a Rockvilla Golden Promise ewe his purchasers were Ian Spence and Sue Pye, Aberdeenshire.

Their next best price was 2,600 gns paid by Gail and Gwen Jones from Chepstow for Logie Durno Outstanding another Crogham Lambert lamb.

Brecon breeder, Mr David Curran attracted some lively bidding late in the day, with a top of 3,200 gns for Wernfawr OMG. This embryo tup lamb was by Wrenvale Mad 4 Ewe out of a Foulrice bred ewe by

Rutland Ensign and was purchased by the Ingrams. Ben James from Tenbury Wells, Worcester went to 2,500 gns for Wernfawr Olympus, another Wrenvale sired lamb this time out of a Netherkeir Kiwi ewe.

Ian Matthews from Brecon sold Buckland Oberon for 2,600 gns a Logie Durno Macbeth son to Northern Irish breeder, Robert Scott for his Bunderg Flock.

First in the ring was a shearling ram from the Galtres Flock of Mrs Deborah Whitcher which sold for 2,500 gns to Geoff Probert, Mortimer Flock and Richard Geldard, Wraycastle Flock. Never Say Never Again was by Mountsted Jethro out of a Galtres Highland ewe.

Auctioneer Clive Roads said after the sale “I had buyers all around the ring for the sheep, there was a buzz and enthusiasm for the lots on offer and a great result achieved for everyone.”

Top Price Goes To Tullyear Oman at Charollais Sheep Premier Charollais Sheep trade in Northern Ireland got off to a flying trade with averages up and an excellent clearance. The buzz around the market confirmation of the interest in the breed.

Topping the trade at 3,200gns was Tullyear Oman, a ram lamb from the Tullyear pen of Drew and Stephen Cowan. Oman is a son of Foulrice Nuria top priced ram lamb at Worcester Premier 2013 who was purchased by Eddie Buckley’s Kilbarry Flock. Oman’s maternal sire is Tullyear Krackerjack. Standing second in the late December born class this impressive ram was purchased by Friarstown Charollais, County Leitrim.

Champion of the day chosen by Judge Geoff Probert, was a powerful shearling ram shown by the Artnagullion Flock of William McAllister. This Ballyhibbon Kickstart son sold to a consortium of English and Welsh Breeders for 2,100gns. Standing second in the shearling class was the Carnew Flock of Jonathan Aiken, his Castellau Lord Mayor son selling for 1,000gns to Eamonn Quinlivan, County Clare.

REgION 1 - NORTH OF SCOTLAND HEADINg North of Scotland Judge Stephen Hodgson and Nicola travelled up from North Yorkshire covering 1295 miles looking at flocks from Stirling to Orkney and finishing in Aberdeen in all 13 flocks in 4 days.

Starting in Stirling with David Brown heading to Dundee area, on the second day a little detour was taken to Howard and Andrew Davies’s flock, then onto Keith and Huntley, making their way up to Thursoe to catch the morning ferry to Orkney.

Spending the day with Sheena was both an education and an experience, after viewing the sheep they were treated to a grand tour of the Island and just to say making it back to catch the evening sailing with minutes to spare.

The final day was the toughest with six flocks to see starting at Wick with Sandy Douglas just as light was breaking, then heading down to Inverness being treated to cream cake for elevenses’ made

by Caroline Wilson’s Grandson, moving on and meeting up with Bruce to be informed that the evening meal was booked for 6.30. They really had to get a move on.

The enthusiasm of producing quality Charollais sheep was Due to Erin & Eilidth Duncan flying apparent throughout all the flocks. back from holiday they were shown round by their Grandad, quickly moving onto Aberdeen they finally arrived at Lewis Anderson’s trying to beat the fading light which was managed with minutes to spare.

They saw a very high standard of stock and stockmanship with well fleshed, good skinned sheep. With exceptional scenery and trying very hard not to get a speeding fine!!

Sheena Coghill’s 50 strong flock was consistent in fleshing and good skins, proving the breeding potential in the gimmer lambs.

HEADINg2 - SOuTH OF SCOTLAND REgION The South of Scotland The region has had a good turnout at the shows over the summer. Charollais trade at Kelso Sales this year was better than last year.

Herbie & Alan Kennedy had a Production Sale at Parkgate on Friday 10th October. There was a good turnout of breeders from all over the Country.

Mr Lionel Organ travelled from Wales to the sale and stayed on to judge our South of Scotland Flock Competition. He enjoyed his time touring around our flocks and seeing good sheep.

We had a presentation Dinner on the Sunday night at the Annandale Arms Hotel in Moffat where Lionel handed out prizes.

REgION 4 - EAST OF ENgLAND HEADINg On Thursday 2nd October over 30 members of the Eastern Region Charollais met at the Falcon Hotel, Uppingham for the Annual Dinner and presentation of the awards for the Flock Competition.

16 Flocks in the region had entered the Flock Competition and after several attempts to plan the order of the visits, Andrew Walton had his route.

Due to the large number of entries and the distance that he had to travel, Andrew started his task on Sunday, then had Monday off and then completed his travels on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday.

His travels took him from Kent to Derbyshire, via Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire and Rutland for the dinner.

Several members had entered for the first time and I hope they will continue to support regional events.

The region is planning to hold a show preparation day in the New Year, which will be hosted by Sarah Hinchley. Carol Watson will be giving advice and holding a master class.

REgION HEADINg 5 - CENTRAL ENgLAND The Central Region AGM was held on June 7th by kind permission of Jennifer and Geoff Curtis, Paddock, View, Wickhamford, Evesham.

The AGM was well supported and an excellent spread of lunch was followed by a tour of the Elmwick Flock.

A new regional committee was voted in with Andrew Walton continuing in the role of chairman, supported by Tim Greenow and Cecil Thomas as vice chair and Jan Walton as secretary.

The other committee members are: Jennifer Curtis Stuart Johnson Robert Gregory Janet Corbett Nick Hart.

The flock competition was judged by Tom Greenfield who had a wide and varied array of flocks to view during his tour of the region. Tom was impressed with the quality of sheep within the central region and the hospitality of our members, a full report on the results is in the flock competition results section.

Tom said “we had a couple of enjoyable days, seeing good sheep. In my mind Robert's were of good quality, especially the ewe lambs, which were the best group of sheep I've seen for a while. Mark Johnsons shearlings, once we got near to them, although small in numbers, looked a picture and I will be interested to see how Stuart's ram lamb turns out. It was nice to see a lamb with good conformation throughout. Congratulations to you all.”

We would also like to congratulate David and Joe Lewis for winning Interbreed group of 3 at Cheshire Show and also Robert Gregory for getting Supreme Champion at Stafford Show with Edstaston Madison Prizes were handed out at the regional Annual Lunch held at The Red Lion, Myddle, Shrewsbury after a tour of both the Knockin Flock by kind permission of Abbie Moseley and the Edstaston Flock by kind permission of Robert and Jeanette Gregory. An impressive number of members turned out for the day with 40 attendees.

The region also wishes to acknowledge the efforts put into organising a charity raffle by Jennifer Curtis, Janet Corbett and Ann Griffiths which raised £100 for Midlands Air Ambulance, £100 for Acorn Hospice and £100 towards the annual lunch - well done all of you.

HEADINg REgION 6 - WALES Welsh Region CHAMPION FLOCk gLANTREN FLOCk The Glantren flock of Huw and Bronwen Evans from Glantren Fach farm, Llanybydder, was started in 2004 with the purchase of four ewes at the Southam production sale. To these ewes several others were added in 2005 at the Worcester production sale and Brecon sale, these came from other notable flocks, Edstaston, Logie Durno, Regan and Glyncoch.

These ewes provided excellent foundation stock from which the current Champion flock of just over fifty ewes has grown.

Speaking to Huw & Bronwen they highlight one ewe purchased in their first year from Southam that has had a major impact on the flock.

“Most of our show team stock go back to this one ewe”. This ewe’s full sister sold in the same sale has made her own impact in the breed, being the dam of Rockvilla Ferrari who is in turn sire of the influential Crogham Hannibal.

The flock has also enjoyed some notable sale achievements since its beginning with some notable sales at the Worcester Premier sale, in 2011 selling Glantren Legend for 1,600gns, in 2012 selling Glantren Merlot for 2,000gns, and in 2014 selling Glantren Opium 1,350gns.

When discussing the rams that have had a big effect, Huw & Bronwen state that in the beginning Southam Exotic’s progeny performed very well in the flock. But it was a purchased Ram Glyncoch Konga, that they feel has had the greatest impact.

“His lambs were long with good fleshing as well as having a little bit of style”. He was the sire of both Legend and Merlot as well as many of the flock competition winning ewes. Following on from Konga was his best son Glantren Linesman, retained for use in the flock, he was the sire of the majority of 1st prize winning shearling ewes.

This show team has enjoyed some notable successes, winning the Interbreed Championship and Interbreed group of three at Aberystwyth and Lampeter shows in the last two years.

Huw & Bronwen are clear about one of their show ring ambitions “We’d love to win a first prize at the Royal Welsh. A red card there is the pinnacle for most Charollais breeders”.

To aid its progress the Glantren flock has been performance recorded since 2011 and has taken part in the breed CT scanning programme at Carmarthen in 2012 and 2014. Both are tools that they feel are vital to future success “Buyers, especially younger buyers are paying increased attention to figures, more people ask about them each year”.

I’m sure that this flock having enjoyed so much success since its beginning, now being the Champion Flock for the past two years, will continue to grow and develop and can look forward to a successful future.

Glantren Merlot

Loanhead Magnum The recent purchase of Loanhead Magnum at the Premier sale in 2013 has been an exciting addition to the flock, with his first crop of lambs performing very well in 2014 topping at 1,100gns at the Premier sale and many being part of the 1st prize group of ewe lambs.

The flock’s main aim is to produce commercial rams for the local market.

RESERVE CHAMPION FLOCk - gWYNDY FLOCk In 2003 Colin and Ros Bowen started their journey into breeding Charollais sheep, beginning their Gwyndy flock with the purchase of 19 ewes and yearling ewes from Southam, Carnhill, Penrhos and Meifod flocks through society and dispersal sales.

To these several ewes were added the following year to form the basis for the flock, which now stands at a little over 100 ewes.

Speaking to Colin he is clear about his aim “Running the flock of pedigrees alongside our flock of 600

REgION 6HEADINg - WALES This ram was sire of the majority of the prize winning ewes at society sales. He is also sire of another ram beginning to make an impact in the flock Gwyndy Llewelyn, the Champion Stock ram in the Welsh Region for 2014.

“He carries our best genetics” says Colin “being out of one of our most consistent breeding females”.

When asked about the hopes for future Colin says “I want to continue to sell strong commercial rams to a growing number of regular customers and to make sure they continue to be happy with the product we are producing”.

commercial ewes we are focused on producing well-fleshed, hardy commercial rams” adding “the carcase is key, seeing the end product going to the abattoir keeps us focused on our goals”.

The Gwyndy flock has also enjoyed some notable success in the pedigree market, especially within the Society in lamb ewe sales, having gained the top price female at Brecon sale in 2012 at 1,000gns as well as the Champion female at this venue in 2013.

The flock also achieved the Champion female at the society sale at Welshpool in 2012 and 2013.

The flock has also gained success in the show ring. During 2013 they won the breed championship at Aberystwyth and in 2014 going one step better winning the Interbreed Championship at St Clears.

When asked about the most influential stock ram he has used Colin is very clear “Gwyndy Kadinsky, he has simply transformed the flock”. The product of an in lamb ewe purchase from Trevadlock and Sired by Foulrice Informer he has been used very heavily and is the sire of the majority of 1st prize winning ewes and shearling ewes from the flock competition.

“He consistently produces well fleshed sheep with fantastic back ends” says Colin “when sorting lambs you can always pick a Kadinsky!”

HEADINg NEWS FROM REgION 7 This has been one of the best summers we in the West Country can remember. Plenty of grass and dry weather for long enough to get in silage, hay and corn has made a bumper harvest. Many breeders enjoyed the strong spring lamb trade using the opportunity to keep only their best lambs.

SHOWS Shows have been well attended with Charollais taking many Championships. The weather has been kind to them bar Devon County Show which was hit by a cloudburst rendering the car parks no go areas and closing the show to the public for the last day.

Classes still went ahead with a very high entry for the child handlers and a most entertaining over 60’s class judged on similar lines. Consequently we now have a new West Country breed called the Spotted Exmoor!!

Ex SW Chairman Patrick Tully did a good job judging the Charollais and we were joined by Carroll and Jonathon Barber to watch the showing and for refreshments after. Thanks to Michael and Melanie Alford (Stillmans) for supplying the meat for our evening BBQ. National Chairman David Mawhinney travelled from Northern Ireland to judge Bath and West Show where he had a high entry of good Charollais put in front of him. He joined us later for drinks and nibbles.

Cornish Pasties and Cider was the order of the day in the Charollais tent after showing at the Royal Cornwall.

FLOCk COMPETITION In September Jenny Curtis fitted judging our Flock competition into her tight schedule, judging fourteen flocks in three days. She travelled from Wincanton in the east to the Lizard in the west covering 647 miles in all. Results are on following page. Many thanks to her and Geoff for doing such a thorough job.

Dave Smith went travelling in October, but not from choice. After going into hospital locally for Angioplasty, he ended up in London having a triple bypass! We all hope he gets well soon.

VISIT TO DENIS BRINICOMBE Denis Brinicombe, his family and staff hosted our Autumn get together at his factory in Crediton.

Showing us how his Tubby blocks are made and explaining his unique ingredients. They even stopped their production line in order to show us around the factory then allowed us to use their conference room to hold a short meeting afterwards.

ExETER NSA In August a quality entry of Charollais sheep attracted a decent crowd of buyers ready to spend on what they liked. Top price was the same as last year at £1,050 for the pick of the shearlings from Robert Hoppers 1st prize winning pen. Other shearlings to £924, £787.50 & £735 from EW Quick & Son, and £924 again for the best from A & R Wrayford.

Ram lambs topped at £567 for Robert Hopper with the Overall Champion coming from Mike Alford’s prize winning pen and realising £525.

The females saw plenty of trade too, peaking at £441 & £420 for Dave Smith of Kings Nympton with a shearling and 6T respectively.

HEADINg8 - NORTHERN IRELAND REgION Norbrook Champion Flock Award goes to Artnagullion The Annual Dinner and Prize Giving of the Northern Ireland Charollais Sheep Society was held in Corick House. Members and friends were welcomed by Club Chairman Jonathan Aiken. A warm welcome was especially given to Jacqueline Hamilton representing Norbrook, sponsor of the Flock Competition.

Following a lovely meal, the club trophies were awarded, Male of the Year went to Hollylodge “Made to Measure” - a son of Blakeney King Louis who was purchased at Dungannon Premier 2012 by the Lornbrook Flock for 3, 600gns. Bred by McConnell Brothers, Parkgate “Made to Measure” has had a very successful show season.

Female of the Year went to Lornbrook J-Lo for the second consecutive year. J-Lo won the prestigious NISA/Danske Bank Championship at Antrim Show.
